Vankleek Hill Fair Days

Friday and Saturday the weather turned a bit gloomy with frequent bouts of rain. The ground became too soft in some of the exhibition pens and corrals and forced cancellation of some events like the popu- lar miniature horse run out of concern for the animals’ welfare. Other events like the Holstein show and the 4H judging carried on as usual. Live music filled the air with both bands at the regular stage setup and also local sin- gers and dancers at the Green Tent near the bandshell. Sunday the weather turned sunny again in time to welcome the beach volleyball tournament and participants in the annual Six for the Sticks charity fun run.

The weather was not kind all the time for the weekend of the Vankleek Hill Fair. But that did not stop either visitors to the fair or exhibitors and participants fromhaving a good time. The 173rd Annual Vankleek Hill Fair got off to a grand start withThursday evening’s parade through the village down to the fairgrounds. Besides celebrating both the local agriculture sector, many of this year’s parade entries also took note of the 150th anniversary of Confederationwith Canadian flags flying everywhere and the Maple Leaf a prominent part of many float displays.

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Le détachement de Hawkesbury de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO) de- mande l’aide du public pour trouver Gary Foster du canton d’Alfred-Plantagenet, dis- paru depuismardi de la semaine dernière. M. Foster, 78 ans, a quitté son domicile sur la concession 9 dans le canton d’Alfred Plantagenet vers 15 h 34, le mardi 15 août. Il a été vu montant dans une camionnette beige, avec une boîte en fibre de verre. Le camion a été vu pour la dernière fois se dirigeant vers l’est sur la concession 9, dans le canton d’Alfred-Plantagenet. La police a ensuite reçu de l’information selon laquelleM. Foster a été déposé dans le village de Curran ce jour-là. Il a été vu pour la dernière fois vers 16 h 30, marchant vers l’ouest sur le chemin de comté 2, à environ deux kilomètres à l’ouest de Curran. M. Foster, comme le démontre la photo, est un homme âgé, de cinq pieds neuf pouces et pesant entre 200 et 225 livres. Prescott-Russell hopes for best in NAFTA talks

Le président des États-Unis, Donald Trump, a affirmé qu’il voulait simplement « modifier » les sections touchant les relations commerciales entre son pays et le Canada, mais la délégation des États-Unis dispose de 18 pages remplies de 100 demandes de réécriture du document de deux décennies. It (NAFTA) needs to be improved, we agree on that. But we’re putting on our Canada First hat.” Drouin also noted that Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has experience in taking a tough stand on trade negotiations. Talks have begun for either rewriting or revoking the 20-year-old free trade agree- ment between Canada, the United States and Mexico. Which result it will be may depend on how the United States behaves at the negotiating table. tracting any bears looking for food. Clean any fish caught during a camping trip well away from the camp site and throw the guts into the lake or river. Do not bury them. Bears have a good sense of smell and will dig up the site then go look around for more food nearby. All food should be double- or triple- bagged and kept in secure and air-tight cool- ers which are kept away from the sleeping area, whether it is a tent or a camper. Best to bring a long rope to tie around a cooler and hang it up in a tree out of reach of a bear. An RV should have an airtight fridge or freezer unit inside for storing meats and other foods which can produce a smell that would attract bears. Burn any food scraps and fat drippings in an open fire. When hiking, keep children with the adults and any dogs on a leash. Do not let dogs run loose. If they find a bear, they may end up bringing it back with them if they an- noy it. Also, do not wear perfume or strong cologne, as the scent may attract a bear. Carry a whistle, air horn, or bell, and use it every now and then while out hiking. A bear will avoid humans if it has a chance to

Close-encounter incidents in other parts of Ontario have prompted theMinis- try of Natural Resources to re-issue its Be Bear Wise advice for camping pamphlet through email alerts to media. Themain point the pamphlet emphasizes is that anyone camping in either provincial or national parks in Ontario or in any other forested area of the province should learn how to recognize bear activity where they are by recognizing bear tracks, scat or drop- pings, or claw marks on a tree trunk where a bear has marked its territory. Ontario is home to black bears, which are smaller than the grizzlies native to Western Canada, but which can be just as dangerous under the wrong circumstances. Get information about whether or not bears are local to a camping area. Heed any warnings posted about bear activity in the area.That includes keeping a campsite clean and as odour-free as possible to avoid at-

Nouvelles directrices à l’école St-Paul et à L’Escale

Deux écoles du CSDCEO, soit L’École élé- mentaire catholique de Plantagenet et l’École secondaire catholique L’Escale de Rockland, auront de nouvelles directrices. L’École élémentaire catholique de Plan- tagenet accueille une nouvelle directrice, Maryse Legault. Mme Legault œuvre dans le domaine de l’éducation depuis 22 ans, tant en enseignement au niveau élémentaire qu’agente de l’éducation pour le ministère de l’Éducation de l’Ontario (MÉO) et pour l’Office de la qualité et de la responsabilité en éducation (OQRE). Mme Legault détient aussi deux baccalauréats en plus d’unemaî-

trise en enseignement et en apprentissage. Chantal-Christine Gratton a été nommée nouvelle directrice de L’Escale. Avant d’accé- der à ce poste, Mme Gratton a été directrice de l’École secondaire catholique de Cassel- man et par la suite, de l’École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury. Elle a 17 ans d’expérience à la direction et à la direction adjointe des écoles du CSDCEO. Mme Gratton est originaire de la région et elle espère innover, transmettre ses qualités de leadership et offrir de nouvelles possi- bilités à la communauté estudiantine de L’Escale.
