More research money on Lyme disease The downside of summer time fun is the increased risk of contracting Lyme disease from some varieties of ticks, while out for a walk in the woods or through an open field. The United Counties of Prescott- Russell council voted support of resolutions from Niagara Region council and Augusta Township demanding the provincial government increase its funding support of research to improve testing for Lyme disease, help develop more effective treatment for the disease, and also more effective means to exterminate the species of tick responsible for spreading it. Lyme disease causes long-term joint pain and chronic fatigue among other symptoms and the number of diagnosed cases in Ontario is increasing. – Gregg Chamberlain ficials and to create links between people in the community. Members of council and Township administration personnel were on hand. Department heads were available to answer any questions regarding their spe- cific fields. “We wanted to give community residents, business owners and department heads a chance to have one-on-one conversations that a regular council meeting doesn’t really allow. Low water alert still in effect The last couple of rain showers at the end of June and over the Canada Day weekend may have relieved the parched lawns and gardens around Prescott-Russell and other parts of Eas- tern Ontario but they have not had that much effect on the overall water level in local rivers and streams. The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) repeated its notice of a Level One Low Water Condition notice for the South Nation River watershed region.While a Level One notice does not mean drought conditions exist yet for the watershed, the SNC urges residents to practice good water conservation habits.That includes not watering lawns or gardens except early in the morning and late in the evening to allow the ground time to absorb the water. Do not use hoses to wash driveways clean and make sure not to leave any taps running. Et Casselman s’y prépare soutient le maire de Casselman, Conrad Lamadeleine. Lors d’une rencontre avec notre journal le jeudi 30 juin dernier, M. Lamadeleine a discuté des projets et des nouveaux dévelop- pements qui prendront leur envol à Cassel- man dans les années à venir, ainsi que des répercussions que ces derniers auront sur la communauté. « Des études et travaux ont déjà été amor- cés au chapitre des eaux et des égouts. La municipalité a réussi à obtenir un octroi de 2 millions $ plus tôt cette année, pour permettre l’installation de branchements pour 60 lots de l’autre côté du pont (à l’ouest), d’effectuer des études et agrandir le réservoir municipal. » a affirmé M. One suggestion from themayor is for the creation of municipal bonds. “All municipalities of Ontario are facing financial problems in being able to make developments (happen),” stated mayor Lamadeleine. “The province wants to create jobs, but it also needs financing for infrastructure. So what is the answer?” The mayor offered two suggestions. First was a longstanding request from him and other Prescott-Russell mayors for removal of water and sewer capital works from the annual municipal debt load. The argument is that water and sewer services are covered through user fees that residents and businesses pay for, and those services are not part of the main municipal capital budget. Other infrastructure works like roads and bridges are paid for through the regular capital works budget using a portion of the municipal tax levy, senior government grants, municipal loans, or a combination of any of the three financingmethods. Municipal bonds are a popular revenue- raising method for many U.S. cities and towns and also for a number of American school districts and other local government agencies like public utilities. Other countries also allow creation of municipal bond issues though theymay be known as local authority bonds or by other names. “Your speech in Toronto (ROMA convention) was on job creation in order to create revenues,” stated Lamadeleine. “Therefore, these suggestions are in order to do exactly this. Most annual general meetings (AGA) in- clude reports, presentations and financial spreadsheets fromBoard chairs, CEOs, and auditors. At theWinchester District Memo- rial Hospital (WDMH) AGM, held on June 28, attendees also heard from staff, physi- cians, volunteers, and patients through a new video that premiered that evening. The video introducesWDMH’s newCom- mitment Statements, centering on the theme of Compassionate Excellence. “This past year, we took some time to reflect on what that really means. Staff, physicians, volun- teers, our Board, the Patient and Family Engagement Committee, and the commu- nity at large were all part of the discussion,” noted StephenMcClellan, Board chair, in his written report. “Together, we came up with three short statements that put into words howwe care for our patients and each other.” The 2015 Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry International Plowing Match (IPM) did much more than just showcase the local farming community. It also supported local charities including theWinchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) Foundation. At a recent volunteer appreciation event in Finch, IPM Chairman Jim Brownell announced that theWDMH Foundationwas the beneficiary of a $100,000 gift from the IPMLegacy Fund.The Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation and the Glengarry Memorial Hospital Foundation received the same amount. Other service and not- for-profit groups also received donations. WDMH Foundation Board Member Cindy Peters accepted the donation and congratulated the IPMorganizing committee

These include new staff and physi- cians, expanded programs, the work of the Patient and Family Engagement Committee and a balanced budget for the eighth con- secutive year. Stephen McClellan, who is completing his term as Board chair, summarized his report by noting: “We are one team and we want to thank each staffmember, physician, volunteer and Board member at WDMH. Together, we will make every patient experi- ence the best it can be.” for hosting such a wonderful event. “I think Finch stole the title from Disney as the happiest place on earth for those few days,” Peters said. “Thank you so much for choosing our three hospitals to receive this generous gift.” He noted that the funds will be used to support WDMH’s highest priority needs. “Please know that our patients will benefit greatly from your generosity,” expressed the boardmember. “In every hospital, gold standard medical equipment is equally as important as the healthcare professionals who use it. Les Richelieu remettent 9150 $ à la Paroisse St-Jacques
Unmontant de 9150 $ a été remis à la Paroisse St-Jacques d’Embrun par le Club Richelieu d’Embrun, afin de contribuer aux coûts des rénovations qui ont dû être effectuées au clocher et à la fondation de l’édifice. Ci-dessus, on reconnait le président du Club Richelieu d’Embrun, Claude Grégoire, le curéMgr. Albert Kaumba-Mufwata, le président du conseil d’administration des biens temporels de la paroisse, Laurier Lemieux, ainsi que le président sortant, Marc Ryan. —photo Danic Legault
Assurances Bruyère d’Embrun a remis 1250 $ au Club Optimiste d’Embrun, le 28 juin dernier, lors du barbecue annuel du club. Ce dernier utilisera cette somme afin d’améliorer le parc de jets d’eau, situé à proximité du Centre communautaire.
