Sumter Packaging Achieves Corrugated Printing Milestone BY LEN PRAZYCH Sumter Packaging, the award-winning third-generation independent sheet plant in Sumter, South Carolina, recently achieved another major milestone in its long history with its use of Extended Color Gamut (ECG) on corrugated post print.

Greif Acquires 51 Percent Ownership In ColePak, LLC Delaware, Ohio based Greif, Inc. last week announced it has acquired 51 percent of the ownership interest in ColePak, LLC in an all- cash transaction funded through Greif's exist- ing credit facility. ColePak is the second largest supplier of paper partitions in North America and has a future growth path in that product niche. As partners, ColePak adds a completely new product offering to the Greif paper convert- ing portfolio, which provides integration to the Greif mill system in both containerboard and URB grades. Additionally, the ColePak margin profile is immediately accretive to the Greif portfolio. A shared set of company val- ues, a growth-oriented business profile, and exposure to stable and growing food and beverage end markets all further highlight the strong strategic fit, which closely reflects the growth priorities we outlined at our Investor Day in 2022. “ColePak has done a phenomenal job of growing a thriving and financially successful business due to their strong values, relentless customer-service focus, and robust family cul- ture,” said Ole Rosgaard, President and Chief

With a long and proud history that goes back to 1958 and E.H. “Ed” Fienning and second-generation steward and industry icon Chuck Fi- enning, Sumter Packaging expanded into its current headquarters in Sumter in 1981 and has since expanded into four other locations serv- ing the Carolinas, Georgia, and Virginia. “This groundbreaking ECG technology that we are running on our Goepfert rotary die cutter allows us to produce some of the most beautiful corrugated I’ve ever seen printed. For truckload volume high graphics products, the Goepfert allows us to extend our service range to East of the Mississippi,” says Ben DeSollar, Sumter Packaging’s CEO. The ground-breaking technology allows for expanding the color palette beyond CMYK by adding additional colors such as orange, green and violet. This results in a broader range of colors and smooth- er gradients, and as a solution to replace spot colors. Sumter has been making its move toward high-value graphics for a more than a decade when it installed its first ink kitchen. In 2016, the company added an HP digital printer and in November 2020 installed an EMBA 245 four color flexo folder gluer, which DeSollar credits with CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 Ben DeSollar, CEO of Sumter Packaging, with some of the award-winning designs manufactured on the company's corrugated printing machinery.

Core Competency

AICC has announced the latest release of Breaking Down Boxes, in which hosts Gene Marino, President of Akers Packaging Service Group, and Joe Morelli, Vice President of Sales at Patterson Printers and Lewisburg Printing Co., speak with Matt Davis, President, Packaging Express, in the episode entitled, “I’m In.”

BloApCo Floor Shredders easily handle Cores and Sheet Waste

Matt Davis has corrugated box dust in his veins. His grandfather owned and operated successful box plants in Iowa during the 1930s through the 1960s. His father, Jim Davis, worked over 30 years with Deline Box before starting Packag- ing Express with Matt in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1998. This ad-

venture began over a family breakfast when Jim asked his family if anyone wanted to be part of a sheet plant he was considering starting. “Matt is not only a phenomenal leader, but a phenome- nal human being as well. He oozes positivity and it’s con- tagious,” said Marino. After college and before walking into Packaging Ex- press, Davis spent a year teaching in Ecuador. Even while

AICC Releases Sales Compensation Report: Salaries Are Increasing AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has an- nounced the release of its 13th Sales Compensation Re- port. Conducted in early 2023, the survey offers compre- hensive insights into sales compensation and benefits within independent corrugator plants and sheet plants across the United States. Building upon the foundation of the 2021 survey, the 2023 edition includes modifications to questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, shedding light on the evolving strategies employed by companies and sales employees post-pandemic. This report draws on data from 75 independent corru- gator and sheet plants. These companies employ more than 8,300 full-time employees and operate across all regions in the United States. Collectively, these plants achieved sales totaling approximately $3.9 billion in corru- gated products in 2022. All responses to the survey have been meticulously collected and compiled by Association Research, Inc. from Ijamsville, MD, ensuring the utmost confidentiality. Key Highlights from the Survey: Salary and Compensa- tion include: • The mean base salary for salespersons at independent sheet plants in the United States, as of January 1, 2023, was $80,365. This represents a notable increase of 4.9

percent compared to the $76,621 reported in 2021 and a substantial growth of 10.8 percent from the figure re- ported in 2019 ($72,558). • Regarding total compensation, the survey reveals that this year's sheet plant salespersons averaged $186,872. This figure represents a significant surge from the $141,310 reported in 2021. • As for salespersons in U.S. corrugator plants, the mean base salary as of January 1, 2023, was $89,443. This reflects a growth of 2.7 percent in comparison to the average base salary of $87,101 reported for corrugator salespersons in January 2021. • The total compensation data for corrugator salesper- sons demonstrates a noteworthy increase, averaging $241,728 in the current year's survey. This figure is 13.2 percent higher than the total compensation reported in 2021, which stood at $213,475. These insights provide valuable information on the evolving compensation landscape within independent corrugator and sheet plants. AICC remains committed to offering industry professionals access to accurate, up-to- date data that can aid in strategic decision-making and planning for the future. Conducted in early 2023, the survey offers comprehen- sive insights into sales compensation and benefits within independent corrugator plants and sheet plants across the United States. ICPF Funds New Kongsberg Prototyping Table At Appalachian State University Students in the Graphic Communications Management (GCM) Program at Appalachian State University will be using new equipment this Fall, provided by the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF). The new Kongsberg X Edge 24 prototyping table replaces equipment previously awarded to GCM by ICPF in 2009, when GCM first developed packaging curricula in the school.

“ICPF was thrilled to provide placement of this machine at Appala- chian State University,” said ICPF President, Caitlin Salaverria. “This do- nation will allow GCM to support and grow their corrugated packaging curricula and expand hands-on learning opportunities for students to pre- pare them for future careers in the packaging industry.” Salaverria acknowledged the partnership between GCM Program Faculty Dr. George Glisan, Professor and Program Coordinator and Man- dy Wu, Associate Professor and advisory Board member Bettylyn Krafft of the Phoenix Challenge Foundation, who helped make the donation happen. “As an industry-sponsored foundation, ICPF has worked for the last 30 years to advance student and faculty knowledge of the industry and to promote development of a highly trained workforce,” said Salaverria. “We’ve provided over $13 million in donations of equipment and grants to universities and look forward to expanding our efforts in coming years.” During the past decade, ICPF has donated or placed over $12.5 mil- lion in corrugated equipment (CAD systems, sample tables, testing sys- tems, presses, rotary die cutters, stackers, dryers and related equipment) and other resources to advance college and university curricula to better prepare those students planning to enter the corrugated industry. (The shelf value of the additional donations of design and related software far exceed this $12.5 million figure.) ICPF’s online corrugated curricula is available free through its website for packaging, graphic design, flexography, business and related faculty and their students. It also serves as a resource for ICPF corporate part- ners in their work with new employees, community colleges and technical schools. The corrugated curricula provides a comprehensive overview of corrugated manufacturing, from a brief history to details on production, design, and corrugated packaging’s role as a cost-effective, high-perfor- mance, renewable, recyclable and sustainable packaging choice.

If you’ve got a multi-plant system, you can now have one scheduler handling all your plants.” Schneider said Amtech has integrated “a whole bunch of new analytics” customers can look at to determine the impact on a production schedule. “The analytics are great because they are tightly integrated with our ERP. With oth- er schedulers, you have to go out of your ERP but our soft- ware will integrate it all in one system.” Amtech Software is expected to release the new prod- uct later this year.

Case Paper Names Cass Lundgren COO

Harrison, New York based Case Paper announced the ap- pointment of Cass Lundgren as Chief Operating Officer, leading operations at all Case facilities. Lundgren comes to Case with a wide range of expe- rience in different fields. After graduating from The Unit- ed States Military Academy at West Point, he became a commissioned officer and served as an Apache Helicopter Pilot and Company Commander in the 101st airborne divi- sion and was deployed to Kuwait during his service. “Cass has all the qualities we look for in a leader,” said Case Paper President, Simon Schaffer-Goldman. “He un- derstands that leaders work for the teams they lead, not the other way around. We’re excited for the experience and enthusiasm he’ll bring to Case.”

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.
