Trillium subdivision project A developer’s proposal for a new residential subdivision in Rockland is getting some nods of approval around the Clarence-Rockland council table. Spacebuilders Ottawa Ltd. presented its application for approval of a draft plan for the Trillium subdivision, a 55.7-hectare, 94-lot development, which includes creation of five new streets. The subdivision site is located south of Clark Road and the Outaouais Golf Club and west of Landry Street. During the March 20 committee of the whole session, council members reviewed an infrastructure and planning department report on the proposed project. Overall reaction was favourable though there was a request for city staff to talk to the developer about making changes to the stormwater drainage management system before the draft plan application comes back for approval at a later council session. – Gregg Chamberlain

The mayor also reviewed and answered questions regarding the status of efforts to get the Highway 174/County Road 17 link between Rockland and Orléans upgraded to four-lane status, and also noted recent successes for several local entrepreneurs in getting business deals as a result of the city hosting a local showcase session with officials from the Korean Embassy. – Gregg Chamberlain

An Ottawa-based energy development co-operative expects to start setting up a small-scale solar power project in the heart of the village of Alfred, before the summer is gone. Residents of the area or anywhere else in the Prescott-Russell region who want to sign up as investors for this particular pro- ject have until the end of April to do so. But OREC President Dick Bakker affirmed that the project is a go, and the April deadline for a Class A Series 5 share offering does not affect company plans to go ahead with both the Alfred project and three other smal- ler projects planned this year in the city of Ottawa. “We would like to have the people of Pres- cott-Russell involved in OREC and investing in the project,” Bakker said during an April 10 evening presentation, but added that it is not a condition of the project. Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-Operative (OREC) is a for-profit energy development co-operative, focused on small-scale solar, wind and other alternative energy projects in the EasternOntario region. Since its incorpo- ration in 2010, the company has developed 13 such projects throughout the region and the four planned for this year will bring the company’s energy development portfolio to 17, for a combined generating capacity of 1.7megawatts for sale to the Ontario energy

April showers bring flooded roads
Homeowners with sump pump systems for their dwellings should also check tomake sure those pumps are in good condition and working. The current flood situation is due to heavy spring rains and winter snowmelting, cau- sing a rapid rise in stream levels everywhere. The ground has also become saturated and slow to absorb more water, adding to the heavier runoff situation.
NationMunicipality, and Russell Township, as well as the rural areas of Ottawa should also be alert. Several roads in almost every commu- nity have experienced flooding. County road 9 near the Séguin Bridge was closed on the St-Isidore village side, because of serious flooding of The Nation River. The latest report at press time from the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) public works department was that County Road 9 should be open to traffic again on Tuesday, April 11 with floodwaters receding. County Road 15 was reopened to traffic earlier in
the week after it was closed because of flood conditions. Residents should consult their munici- pal website for notices of which roads in their areas are still closed due to flooding. They are also advised to avoid going close to any shorelines during the current high water situation and to make sure that their children and pets are kept away from fast- running streams.

iTunes scam surfaces The OPP issued a warning for music lovers who like to download their favourite songs, to beware of an iTunes gift card scam. The con artist sends notices demanding payment for iTunes gift card purchases, and in most cases either threatens to report the victim to police or, in one case, will pretend to be a Canada Revenue agent claiming the victim owes “back taxes” on purchases.The scammer will also tell the victim to buy and activate iTune cards and then provide the activation codes as a form of payment to avoid further charges. A variation of the scam may involve the con artist pretending to be a grandchild or some other relative in trouble, and asking for payment by iTunes cards as the method to provide either bail or payments for legal or medical fees.The usual target for this version is a grandparent. – Gregg Chamberlain
Senior housing needs The United Counties of Prescott & Russell council (UCPR) will ask its social services committee to review results of the latest sta- tistical report on subsidized housing, from the UCPR social services department. Focus of the review will be on the waiting lists for subsidized housing aid in Prescott-Russell with attention to the growing number of senior residents looking for social housing. Hawkes- bury mayor Jeanne Charlebois noted that the public needs to be aware that Prescott- Russell has a growing population of seniors in need of subsidized housing. Mayor Charlebois suggested that the UCPR look at making a presentation on the issue to either the pro- vincial government or to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. – Gregg Chamberlain
Probation arrest warrant The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad asks residents in the Ottawa and surrounding areas to be on the watch for Christopher Raymond, 41, wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breach of parole. He is known to frequent the Ottawa and Cor- nwall regions in Ontario and the Gatineau and Oka/ Akwasasne regions in Québec. He was sentenced to prison for possession of a weapon obtained through crime, obstructing justice, dangerous driving, fleeing from police, possession of illegal weapons, drug possession, and other offences. He is a 41-year-old Aboriginal, five-foot-nine, 175 pounds, with a fair complexion, brown eyes, and short black-and-grey hair. Plusieurs semaines avant la compé- tition régionale à Rockland, 14 élèves de l’École élémentaire catholique Saint- Mathieu s’étaient préparés à la première édition du concours d’épellation en fran- çais Épelle-moi Canada. Les membres du personnel se sont engagés tout au long du processus. En guise de préparation au grand jour, les participants ont même eu la chance de s’exercer lors d’un mini- concours présenté le 30 mars dernier. Une rencontre en musique
Les élèves du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est de l’Ontario (CSDCEO) ont eu l’occasion de participer au lancement officiel du nouvel album de l’auteure compositrice franco-ontarienne Gabrielle Goulet, le vendredi 31 mars dernier. L’évènement avait lieu à l’École secondaire catholique de Plantagenet. L’artiste a rappelé aux élèves que les rêves se réalisent, ayant été elle-même une élève des écoles catholiques du CSDCEO et une finissante de l’École secondaire catholique de Plantagenet. Gabrielle Goulet est née à Bourget et a réussi a capter l’attention et l’intérêt d’unemaison de disque, grâce à sa participation à de nombreux concours, ce qui peut en motiver plus d’un. Elle a lancé son premier album Papillon en février 2013, qui fut suivi d’une tournée promotionnelle. Ses chansons tournent sur les ondes des radios. Son dernier album s’est aussi retrouvé en 3e position des meilleures ventes iTunes lors de la première journée de son lancement. — photo fournie

Hommage à six leaders de la francophonie
Finalement, l’Ordre de la francophonie de Prescott et Russell a été présenté à Judith Parisien pour souligner son engagement auprès de la communauté depuis plus de 35 ans. Mme Parisien est également la fon- datrice et directrice générale du Phénix, un organisme qui œuvre à l’inclusion et à la pleine participation des personnes franco- phones en situation de handicap. Le Banquet de la Francophonie de Pres- cott et Russell est organisé par trois orga- nismes partenaires, soit l’Association cana- dienne-française de l’Ontario (ACFO) de Prescott et Russell, les clubs Richelieu d’Em- brun et de Rockland, membres des Clubs Richelieu de la région des Fondateurs et la Fédération des aînés et des retraités fran- cophones de l’Ontario, Régionale de l’Est. Un rappel que l’Ordre de la francophonie de Prescott et Russell, décerné depuis 1999, reconnaît des personnes émérites pour leur engagement ou leur contribution envers la langue et la culture française dans la région de Prescott et Russell et au-delà.

Comme chaque année, bon nombre de dignitaires étaient de la partie, telle Marie- France Lalonde, ministre déléguée aux Affaires francophones, les députés fédéral et provincial de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Francis Drouin et Grant Crack, ainsi que les maires des municipalités de la région et représentants des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell. « Que la francophonie ontarienne conti- nue de vibrer dans cet élan d’ouverture sur le monde, qu’elle continue de vibrer de tous ses feux et surtout qu’elle ne cesse de grandir et de se réinventer », a déclaré la ministre Lalonde, lors de son toast, adressé aux quelque 300 convives présents. Un discours prononcé par le premier ministre Justin Trudeau lui-même a ouvert la soirée, par le biais d’une vidéo. Quant à l’animation, elle a été assurée par la troupe d’humour spontané Improtéine , qui a su divertir la foule entre les intronisations avec leurs improvisations et leurs chansons. François Bazinet a été le premier à être reconnu et accepté au sein de la Compagnie des Cents associés francophones (CCAF) pour sa passion pour l’éducation, la culture et la langue. En plus de ses 42 ans voués à l’éducation et maintenant la politique scolaire – il est président du CSDCEO – M. Bazinet est engagé de nombreuses façons
au sein de sa communauté. Ensuite, ce fut le tour du prix jeunesse Thomas-Godefroy, prix remis en l’honneur du premier Européen qui a foulé le sol du ter- ritoire devenu plus tard Prescott et Russell. JuliannaThomas et Geneviève Éthier se sont vu décerner ce prestigieux prix. Le conjoint de Geneviève, Félix Saint-Denis, avait été le premier récipiendaire de ce prix en 2001. Après le repas, l’Ordre de la francopho- nie de Prescott et Russell a ensuite été pré- senté selon différents volets. Pour le volet organisme communautaire, le Centre de leadership et d’évaluation inc. (CLÉ) a été reconnu comme un allié de choix pour les organismes francophones de la région. Pour le volet francophile, Gary Barton s’est distingué, non seulement dans le do- maine de l’éducation, mais aussi auprès de la population des Comtés unis, en tant que figure politique, depuis maintenant près de 45 ans. Quant au volet bénévole, c’est à Francine Poirier que l’honneur est revenu. Mme Poi- rier est engagée au sein de la francophonie depuis 1968. Elle a été présidente de plu- sieurs organismes. Depuis 2011, elle siège comme administratrice à l’Assemblée de la francophonie où elle représente les aînés et retraités. Elle est lamère de Vincent Poirier, un des membres d’Improtéine.

Sous le thème Notre francophonie – ça se fête , l’engagement de six chefs de file de la francophonie a été reconnu, et ce, devant une salle comble.

Physical activity prolongs independence
not join a walking club or a seniors club? This type of organization offers diverse activities to keep their members in good physical condition. All you need to do in order to increase your feeling of well-being is to incorporate physical exercise into your daily life. What is important is to choose activities which you like and which will motivate you. And, above all, never hesitate to ask a health professional for advice.
It is a well known fact that physical activity has a beneficial effect on our health. No matter what your age, staying active contributes to both physical and mental well-being. Seniors who are active, who stretch on a regular basis and work their muscles, have a much better chance of maintaining their independence. Maintaining good habits doesn’t necessarily mean running 10 kilometres or doing 20 lengths of the pool every day. Even the smallest physical effort counts. At home it’s possible to do a whole range of physical activities. Planning three or four stretching exercises a week is already a good start. Cleaning the cabinets, vacuuming the carpets, washing the floors are all good opportunities to work your muscles. Canada’s Physical Activity Guide recommends that people suffering from arthritis or osteoporosis go for regular walks or take aquafitness, line dancing or tai chi classes. Those who do not have good balance could practice simple yoga movements, stretching as well as exercises to strengthen their ankles. Why

Regular visits to the dentist are a good idea, no matter how old we are. To keep our teeth beautiful and our gums healthy, all we have to do is take care of them. Even though their needs change over the years, seniors should continue to see a professional periodically either for a routine check-up or a treatment. Brushing and use of dental floss are the two most important habits to persevere with in order to have healthy teeth. The Canadian Dental Association suggests twice daily brushings as well as a daily cleaning with dental floss. This routine will help remove any plaque, which causes tooth decay, and will keep gums healthy.
It is as important to take care of dental prostheses as natural teeth. They also should be cleaned on a daily basis. Use a brush with soft bristles to clean the gums or a clean, damp cloth, which can be wrapped around a finger. It is also recommended to soak prostheses overnight in a warm solution consisting of water and white vinegar or a cleaning product for prostheses. Your specialist will recommend having your prosthesis adjusted from time to time. As for dental implants, they require gentler cleaning using both a toothbrush and dental floss. Good oral hygiene, regular check-ups at the dentist and professional advice will help you keep your beautiful smile.
