STA was scored at 8.6 out of 10 for the 2017/18, a slight increase from its previous best of 8.1 from the institute’s past five years of evaluations. dans un communiqué émis par la Cité de Clarence-Rockland. « Le niveau d’eau est à 43,44 mètres… une baisse de 25 centi- mètres depuis le premier mai. » Le maire de Clarence-Rockland, Guy Des- jardins, dit encore suivre la situation de près. « Bien que l’eau baisse, elle pourrait encore monter plus tard, a-t-il fait remarquer. La dernière fois (en 2017), elle avait remonté au mois de mai. Il y a encore beaucoup de glace dans le nord. »
M. Desjardins prévient donc qu’il est important pour les sinistrés de garder leurs sacs de sable autour de leur propriété. Selon le maire, il ne resterait que quelques mai- sons qui n’ont toujours pas d’électricité. Le gaz naturel, par contre, tarde à revenir. « Il n’y a toujours pas de gaz naturel sur le chemin Voisine, disait M. Desjardins. &OCSJEHFOFQBTTFQBTMPSTRVJMZBEFMFBV sur le chemin. »
Près d’une centaine de maisons ont été affectées lors des inondations, nombre plus élevé qu’en 2017. « Il y a des maisons qui ont été affectées cette fois-ci et qui ne l’était pas en 2017 » , a expliqué le maire. Celui-ci souligne que si la baisse du niveau d’eau se poursuit, la Cité de Clarence-Rockland pourrait lever l’état d’urgence.
Bien que le chemin Voisine soit toujours sous l’eau, les maisons sont à l’abri. La situation n’a guère changé sur le chemin Pago. MAN WHO EXPOSED HIMSELF SOUGHT BY POLICE
Officers of the Russell detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are hoping to nab a man who exposed himself at a Casselman business on March 31, at about 2:30 pm. The unknown man came into the store and exposed himself while walking around. A short time later, a customer notified the store owner. The man left the premises without incident. The man is described as being a Caucasian of 5’8 to 5’10 in height, in his mid-40’s. He was wearing a black jacket, grey t-shirt and jeans and sported a goatee, brush cut hairstyle and glasses. La 31e édition du marché aux puces des scouts de Rockland aura lieu le 20 mai prochain, dans le stationnement de l’épicerie Indépendant de Rockland. L’évènement vise à amasser des fonds pour l’organisation à but non lucratif, tout en offrant des trésors aux résidents de la région. Les scouts organisent aussi un barbecue lors de l’évènement ainsi qu’un lave-auto, une nouveauté pour cette année. Ce sont des jeunes de six à dix ans, aidés par des parents et bénévoles, qui laveront les voitures. « Nous laverons la voiture de n’importe qui », a déclaré Donovan Cooper, chargé des oursons des Scouts. Some of the ones affected were telling us that their parents are using the same kind of sandbags for their homes.” A total of about 50 homeowners received the decorated sandbags. “The reaction we received from members of the community was amazing,” said Ivanski. “We are very
proud of our students.” Decorating sandbags isn’t the only thing that students at the school have been un- dertaking in order to help those affected. They organized several fundraisers, includ- ing hosting lunches. “Our grade one to six organized a lunch for students and staff members,” said Rockland Public School QSJODJQBM.BSZ-ZOO8JMDPYi5IFSFTCFFO a lot of acts of kindness happening in our community right now.”
The teachers and students at Rockland Public School wanted to help victims of the recent flooding but didn’t exactly know how. “For security reasons, we couldn’t bring them (students) to the actual flooding sites,” said kindergarten teacher Kelly Ivanski. “We BMTPDPVMEOUCSJOHUIFNUPUIF+FBO.BSD Lalonde arena to fill sand bags.” The latter visited local flooded area and came up with an ingenious idea, which she brought back to her school. Together, students from the kindergarten and first grade classes at Rockland Public School decorated more than 150 sandbags with words of love and encouragements. These were then filled by older students from both Rockland Public School and Rockland District High School and distributed to sev- eral residents battling rising water levels. “All the kindergartens and first grade
students took part in decorating the bags,” said Ivanski. “That’s 160 kids. Our students wanted to help. L’École secondaire catholique de Casselman (ESCC) était l’hôte des Olympiques spéciaux qui regroupaient plusieurs écoles faisant partie du Conseil scolaire catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO). Le 2 mai dernier, 91 élèves à besoin spé- ciaux du primaire, provenant de différentes écoles du Conseil, ont été initiés au monde des Olympiques spéciaux. « Aujourd’hui, c’est une initiation des élèves du primaire au monde des Olympiques spéciaux, a expli- qué Stéphanie Quesnel, directrice adjointe à l’ESCC et responsable du dossier de l’enfance en difficulté. On les prépare et leur fait découvrir différentes activités pour qu’ils puissent, s’ils le désirent lorsqu’ils seront au secondaire, participer aux Olympiques spé- ciaux provinciaux, ensuite internationaux. » Trente-deux élèves du programme régulier du secondaire ont participé à l’évènement comme animateurs, en plus d’accueillir les jeunes participants. Jeff Charlesworth, coordonnateur pour les Jeux olympiques spéciaux Ontario, est venu prêter main-forte aux organisateurs de l’ESCC, afin que la journée soit une réus- site. Et pour Stéphane Levere, enseignant en éducation physique et responsable du programme des Olympiques spéciaux de l’ESCC, cette journée a été couronnée de succès. « Tout se passe bien. What do moms really want for Mother’s Day?
Are you having trouble finding the perfect Mother’s Day present? If so, then perhaps you should consider that what your mom really wants is time — both to share with her loved ones and to enjoy by herself. Here are a few ways to give it to her. PLAN A DAY OF ACTIVITIES Plan a full day of activities for the family so Mom can sit back and enjoy spending time with her loved ones, without the hassle of having to manage itineraries, make reser- vations or organize any of the other details. DO THE SPRING CLEANING Deep clean the kitchen, organize the closet or wash all the windows. You can even hire a cleaning company to do the job; you’ll score the brownie points without having to lift a finger. SORT THE FAMILY PHOTOS Many families have countless digital photo- graphs on their computers that could stand
to be organized. Others have piles of printed pictures that need to be sorted. Give Mom a reason to smile by tidying up the photos and presenting them to her in an album. Be sure to spend some time reminiscing with her as she flips through it. OFFER HER A DAY OFF If she’s got young kids, hire a babysitter for the day. This will give her a much needed break and the chance to do whatever she wants. If you really want to spoil her, send her to a spa to get pampered. Mom doesn’t really need things for Mother’s Day. What she really wants is a shorter to- do list, a bit of down time and to enjoy the company of her family.

How to start your own mommy blog
Parenting blogs are a wonderful source of inspiration, tips and laughs. If you want to share your experiences with the world, consider becoming a mommy blogger yourself. Here’s how in just five steps. 1. DEFINE YOUR REASON FOR BLOGGING Before you start writing, ask yourself why you want to start a mommy blog. Do you want to share parenting tips and tricks with the world? Or do you want friends and family members to keep up with your growing family? Will this be a hobby? Or do you hope to make it into a career? There’s no right or wrong answer to these questions, but knowing the answers will clarify what you want to accomplish. 2. FIND YOUR NICHE The best mommy blogs have a particular focus or niche. What will you offer your readers? You can choose to focus on food, crafts, lifestyle or even politics, as long as it relates to parenting in some way. Defining a niche allows you to reach a target audience and grow your blog quicker than writing about many topics. 3. CHOOSE A NAME Pick a catchy name for your blog. It should be short, simple to spell and relate to your niche. Come up with a few
options, in case you find that your first choice is already taken.
4. SELECT YOUR WEB HOST, DOMAIN AND PLATFORM
The web host is where you’ll purchase your domain name (your address on the internet). It’ll store all of your website files. The platform is where you’ll create the look of your site and where you’ll manage all of the content once it’s up and running. 5. POST REGULARLY To build an audience, it’s important to update your blog regularly. Make sure you choose a publishing schedule that corresponds with the amount of time you want to set aside for blogging. Some people can blog four times a week comfortably, while others struggle to post once a week. Figure out what works for you and be consistent. Good writing takes practice. VERA RUBIN, ASTRONOME Vera Rubin (1928-2016) est une astronome américaine qui a passé sa vie à défendre la place des femmes dans la science, particulière- ment en astronomie, sphère alors dominée par les hommes. Elle est principalement connue pour son étude sur la vitesse de rota- tion des étoiles dans les galaxies spirales. Elle a constaté que les composantes situées à l’extérieur d’une galaxie en spirale se dé- placent presque aussi rapidement que les composantes situées au centre, ce qui ne respecte pas les lois de gravité de Newton. Cette observation l’a conduite à émettre l’hypothèse que les galaxies spirales sont entourées de halos invisibles de masse très impor- tante, des halos de matière noire. Vera Rubin a poursuivi ses travaux de recherche tout en élevant ses enfants. En plus de guider une nouvelle génération de femmes astronomes, sa passion pour la science a incité ses trois fils et sa fille à suivre ses traces. Tous ont obtenu un doctorat en sciences naturelles ou en mathématiques.

MARIE CURIE, PHYSICIENNE On peut difficilement omettre cette pionnière parmi les fi- gures féminines qui ont changé le monde. Physicienne et chimiste polonaise naturalisée française, Marie Curie est non seulement la première femme à avoir reçu un prix Nobel, mais elle est aussi la seule personne, à ce jour, à avoir été récompensée dans deux domaines scientifiques distincts! En effet, en 1903, elle et sonmari Pierre Curie ont reçu le prix Nobel de physique pour leurs recherches sur les radiations. En 1911, elle a obtenu le prix Nobel de chimie pour ses travaux sur le polonium et le radium. SIRIMAVO BANDARANAIKE, POLITICIENNE Lorsqu’elle est devenue première ministre du Sri Lanka en 1960, Sirimavo Bandaranaike était la pre- mière femme à être élue démocratiquement à la tête d’un gouvernement. Elle a occupé cette haute fonction pour trois mandats non consécutifs. Fait intéressant : deux de ses trois enfants ont égale- ment eu des carrières politiques importantes. Sa fille aînée, Chandrika Kumaratunga, a été la cin- quième présidente du Sri Lanka, alors que son fils, Anura Bandaranaike, a été porte-parole du gouver- nement, ministre de l’éducation supérieure et mi- nistre du tourisme.

BIG TRAIL BIKING DAY ON MAY 12
C’est le 24 avril dernier que la saison de badminton s’est terminée pour quelques joueurs de l’équipe de badminton de l’École secondaire catholique de Plantagenet (ESCP), lors du championnat régional de l’est Ontario, qui se déroulait à Brockville. Les élèves de l’ESCP se sont démarqués. Maxime Maisonneuve et Nicholas Stang ont remporté la 3e place en double masculin tandis que Vincent Gareau a terminé en 4e place au simple masculin. Ces élèves avaient aussi remporté la 2e place au tournoi de Prescott-Russell, dans leurs catégories respectives, afin d’accéder à ce championnat. —photo fournie
The Larose Forest has become a popular pilgrimage site for local enthusiasts of mountain bike riding, as well as those in Ottawa and other areas outside of Prescott- Russell. Now that warmer spring weather has arrived and help dry out the trails, the Ottawa Mountain Biking Association will host a May 12 Trail Biking Demo Day event at the P1 trail head location in Larose Forest, off of Indian Creek Road, north of Limoges.
