A message from Missouri Valley College President,
On August 8, 2022, I announced my retirement from Missouri Valley College. Working at Missouri Valley College and serving as president has been one of the great joys in my life. A new president will take office on July 1, 2023. When I leave office, I will have completed 43 years in education and it is an honor to have served 22 of those here at Missouri Valley! I want to thank each and every one of you for your unwavering support over the years. Missouri Valley College has a bright future, and I am confident that the board of trustees have selected the right candidate to build on all we have accomplished together here, and carry this college into the future. Rev. Nick Petrov, Phd. Assistant Professor Campus Chaplain Dr. Nick Petrov is an assistant professor of religion and campus chaplain. Prior to coming to MVC he taught at Drew University Theological School. Nick is a Methodist minister and has served in educational, administrative, pastoral and missional capacities in three countries. At Valley, he teaches world religions, comparative sacred texts, introduction to critical thinking, comparative religious ethics, religion and American politics, among other classes. As a campus chaplain, Nick supports the spiritual and religious experience of students in the context of an exceptionally

Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Dr. Bonnie Humphrey’s Missouri Valley story began in 2000. Her story spans more than two decades, and in it comes numerous successes and triumphs. Without a doubt, Dr. Humphrey is leaving Missouri Valley after more than 20 years of service, having given the college the footing it needs to continue to thrive in the future. For 22 years, Missouri Valley College has been a part of Dr. Humphrey’s daily life. It has been a part of her family’s life. Two of her children graduated from Missouri Valley, as well as one son-in-law. Humphrey has gotten to watch countless students arrive on campus, and leave as productive citizens of the world. She has witnessed faculty and staff grow personally and professionally at a place that they love. She has had the pleasure of visiting with alumni from around the globe who credit much of their success to this small, but mighty place in rural Missouri. Dr. Humphrey’s leadership has positively impacted the Missouri Valley College community for more than 20 years. She has built new buildings, established new academic programs, expanded student services offered, but above all, she has cared. She has cared about the students. She has cared about the faculty and staff. She is why this place has the family-like atmosphere that so many tout. So, as her time in office winds down, her footprint in Missouri Valley College’s history cements deep. This college wouldn’t be the place that it is without her leadership and guidance during the past 22 years. And for that, Valley Nation will be forever grateful.

MATT HUSTON

Matt Huston was born and raised in Marshall, Missouri. His mother was a first generation Valley graduate and his father, a longtime member of the Missouri Valley Board of Trustees. Matt’s memories of the college began at a young age, attending football games and bowling in the Ferguson Center as a child. He was truly raised Valley.

Matt and his wife, Charla, continue to be involved in many areas of the Missouri Valley campus. They currently reside in Marshall and have two sons.
Why do you support MVC? I support Missouri Valley College because of what it brings to Marshall, be it through the fine arts, athletics, or the diversity that the campus provides. Also, being from a banking family, we recognize the positive economic impact that Missouri Valley has on Marshall. I believe in helping the college help its students. Some of those students stay in Marshall after graduation, and bring something new to the town. My hope is that we will continue to grow the connections between the college and the community by celebrating each other’s successes and blending together as neighbors.

For the first time in more than 30 years, Tom Fifer was not inside the Burns Athletic Center on the first day of the new athletic year. Fifer retired from his position as Executive Vice President/Athletic Director on June 30, bringing an end to a career that lasted through four decades and saw tremendous growth for athletics at Missouri Valley. Under his leadership, the college’s athletic department became a leader and pioneer, helping introduce new sports and concepts modeled by other NAIA institutions. Fifer came to Marshall, Mo., in 1991, after a successful run in high school basketball, to take over as head coach of the Missouri Valley men’s basketball program. Immediately, Fifer elevated the program to new heights, guiding his first team to a 23-11 record, and the first National tournament appearance in 31 years. Known for his coaching attire and personality on the sidelines during games, Fifer spent nine seasons as head coach of the program, producing 131 wins, two All-Americans, multiple all-conference selections,
and the National tournament appearance in 1992. Midway through his coaching career, Fifer was promoted to Athletic Director, beginning in 1997. He spent three more seasons as head coach for men’s basketball, before moving fully into the Athletic Director role in the spring of 2000. After taking over as Athletic Director, the department experienced tremendous growth with the addition of many new sports to the college. One of the biggest additions was the women’s wrestling team in 1999. Missouri Valley became the first four-year college in the country to offer athletic scholarships for women’s wrestling. The sport quickly became successful, and won a National championship in 2001, the first National championship won during Fifer’s tenure as Athletic Director. Fifer oversaw the addition of many other sports, including men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, eSports, shooting sports and the weight lifting teams. “Tom has been exceptionally loyal to Missouri Valley College and the good people that have worked side by side with him for years,” said MVC President Dr. Bonnie Humphrey. “He has led by example with a tremendous work ethic and drive to find the best solution to any problem the college has faced.” The women’s wrestling National championship was the first of eight team National championships won during Fifer’s leadership. The cheer team captured three National titles (2001, 2013, 2018), the women’s wrestling team won another two championships (2004, 2005), men’s wrestling added one National championship (2003), and the most recent National title was won by the men’s soccer team (2020). 13 National runner-up finishes during Fifer’s tenure. Other achievements include 57 conference or regional championships, with another 13 conference tournament titles, 512 All-Americans, and 748 NAIA Scholar Athletes. “I am eternally grateful and unbelievably proud to have been a small part of the Viking Spirit that has allowed this college to accomplish many great things,” said Fifer. Fifer’s tenure also saw changes and improvements to athletic facilities on-campus. In 2009, Volney C. Ashford Stadium/Gregg-Mitchell Field was renovated to include the installation of a new synthetic turf playing surface, which now allows for football, soccer and lacrosse teams to use the facility as their home field. The space around Volney C. Ashford Stadium was also improved to include the All-American Plaza, V-Club Plaza, and
upgraded main entrance. A resurfacing of Gregg-Mitchell Field in 2017 allowed for the construction of a second practice field, located to the south of the Burns Athletic Center. In 2019, the Walker C. Fletcher Athletic Complex and Markowitz Center for Strength Training and Wrestling was opened. The more than 28,000 square foot facility allowed for the expansion of services to student-athletes, with multiple new locker rooms, coaches offices, athletic training facilities and a new strength training and weight room. “He has built a reputation within the Heart of America Athletic Conference as a dedicated leader of high integrity and that shines through in Missouri Valley College’s athletic competitions with other schools in the conference,” added Dr. Humphrey. “It has been a true pleasure to work with him during my time at Missouri Valley.” Always well-regarded amongst athletic directors within the Heart of America Athletic Conference and in the NAIA, Fifer was recognized twice as Heart Athletic Director of the Year (2004, 2014). He was also promoted on multiple occasions after taking over the Athletic Director position full-time in 2000. Fifer was promoted to Vice President of Enrollment Management in 2009. He was later promoted again to Executive Vice President in 2017, a title he held until his retirement in June. In addition to his role overseeing the athletic department, Fifer was heavily involved in enrollment management, plant maintenance and budget management.
On his final day before retirement, Fifer talked with many of the coaches and athletic staff members at a surprise gathering in his honor. He was able to reflect on the more than 30 years of work at the college, and how much has changed and grown during that time. “I can’t thank Dr. Humphrey and Missouri Valley College enough for the unwavered loyalty and support, unquestionable friendships and a career full of opportunities to grow as a professional these past 31 years,” added Fifer. Fifer’s retirement has allowed for a new era to begin in athletics at the college, as long-time Men’s Wrestling Head Coach Mike Machholz was promoted to the Athletic Director position.

Rodeo's Winning Streak The 2021-22 rodeo season extended a successful run for the Missouri Valley College men’s rodeo team, as the program dominated the Ozark Region, and posted some of its best results in program-history at the College National Finals Rodeo. Combined with the women’s team, the Missouri Valley rodeo programs are among the elite in collegiate rodeo. The men’s rodeo team continued to sit atop the Ozark Region, taking first place in all ten rodeo competitions during the regular season. The program has now finished first in 20-straight rodeos, and has won the region six-straight years. Not only did this year’s team capture another region championship, but the cowboys finished on top of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association regular season standings for all teams in collegiate rodeo. Cole Franks finished first in the National men’s all-around regular season standings, with Ty Pope coming in third. At the CNFR in Casper, Wyo., the men’s team had its best run of results since 2010, finishing third overall in the standings. Pope earned the program’s first individual National championship since 2015, as he was top cowboy in bareback riding. The previous individual champion for the Viking cowboys was World Champion Tim O’Connell in bareback riding. Pope earned a score of 85.0 in the short go-round to edge out teammate Franks by one point in the average. Pope finished with a 318.5 average and Franks was reserve National champion with a 317.5 average. “This was a true nail bitter,” said Rodeo Head Coach Ken Mason. “The competition was exciting all week, and this all came down to the last ride. Ty has improved immensely. Hard work and perseverance paid off for him.

He was truly blessed to draw the right animals at the right time to give him the opportunity to win the National title.” Joining the pair of All-Americans for the men’s rodeo team was Tucker Alberts who placed third overall in the steer wrestling average with a 19.0. Alberts also tied an arena record with his 3.4 in the second go-round to help propel him towards the top of the standings. Not to be outdone at the CNFR was the Viking women’s rodeo team, led by All-American Sheyenne Anderson (Palmyra, Calif.), who finished sixth in goat tying with a 25.5 in the average. A second member of the Viking rodeo program also tied an arena record during competition through the week. Kenlie Raby posted a 1.7 in her third go-round performance in breakaway roping to earn the achievement. The men’s team finished the CNFR third overall, just 10 points out of reserve National champion status. It was the best finish for the cowboys since 2010. The women’s team entered the CNFR No. 16 in the National standings after the regular season ended, but posted a top ten team finish, placing at No. 9. Missouri Valley was the only school to have both its men’s and women’s teams finish in the top ten at the conclusion of the CNFR. “The entire College National Finals Rodeo was exciting and rewarding,” added Mason. “We had four individuals finish as go-round winners at some point during the week, tied two arena records, and finished with a National champion. Having both teams finish in the top ten, and the only school at that, was a great accomplishment. ”

MVC HOSTED THE AMERICAN COLLEGE DANCE ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE Missouri Valley College hosted the American College Dance Association (ACDA) Conference on campus on March 5-7, 2022. The conference theme is Central Celebration. This conference was made up of face-to-face dance classes, research presentations, lectures taught by professional dancers from around the country, and amazing live performances from guest colleges. Approximately 200 faculty and students attended the conference from our region including Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Indiana, and Illinois. MVC DEBATE AND FORENSICS TEAM COMPETED AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT The Missouri Valley College Debate and Forensics team competed at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament, the first of two national tournaments. This tournament is one of the oldest and largest national tournaments in the country. The team of Eva Agcaoili and Cuauhtemoc Olvera went 4-1 in preliminary rounds of Parliamentary Debate and advanced to elimination rounds. In both quarterfinals and semifinals, they won on 2-1 decisions and advanced to the finals round, where they lost an excellent debate to be named Pi Kappa Delta NPDA JV National Runners Up. Sha Wilson also competed at the tournament and compiled a record of 3-2 in International Parliamentary Debate, adding to the team's point total. In sweepstakes, MVC scored 13th overall, competing against 63 other colleges and universities. MVC was also named in the top 10% of small schools' sweepstakes. This is the first time in MVC Debate and Forensics history that the team has placed in a national sweepstakes award. MVC was also the highest placing school from Missouri at the national tournament. MIKE MACHHOLZ PROMOTED TO MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Missouri Valley College President Dr. Bonnie Humphrey has promoted longtime Men’s Wrestling Head Coach Mike Machholz to Athletic Director for the college. Machholz retired from his duties as men’s wrestling head coach with the promotion.

Machholz has been a coach with the men’s wrestling program for more than 30 years, and helped resurrect the men’s wrestling program in 1991. He took over the head coaching position in 1994, and led the program to tremendous success during his tenure. Machholz became assistant athletic director in 2003, was promoted to associate athletic director in 2013, and then to senior associate athletic director in 2018. Machholz took over the role of athletic director on July 1, 2022, replacing Tom Fifer, who announced his retirement after 31 years of service to Missouri Valley. 2022 LOREN C. GRUBER ENDOWED HONORS AWARD Loanne Martino (Clamart, France) has been awarded the Loren C. Gruber Endowed Honors Award for her Honors Thesis, “Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Women Athletes.” Martino is an MVC December 2021 graduate having majored in Business Management, focusing on Sports Management. She is currently enrolled in the Sport Management master's program at Cal State Long Beach. MVC STUDENTS WIN AWARDS FROM MISSOURI BROADCAST EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION Missouri Valley College students recently received awards from the Missouri Broadcast Educators Association (MBEA). This organization is made up of mass communication departments from colleges and universities across the state of Missouri. Each year, students enter audio and video projects that are judged by industry professionals. Missouri Valley College competed against 16 colleges and universities and received ten awards this year. MVC TO RECEIVE $1.2M GRANT FROM U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION The funds will support Missouri Valley’s mission of guiding students to succeed through personal instruction and intellectual inquiry. The grant will increase the college’s resources to help rural students and open pathways to higher education and economic success. The grant will also fund new positions to serve rural students, including a project director for rural outreach and support, rural student success specialists to assist with career planning, academic advising, and financial aid, and a financial literacy specialist. It will also fund supportive technology, workshops, and campus immersions for rural college, high school, and middle school students, primarily within the Drive 60 Scholarship program.
MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE RECEIVES GRANTS, GIFTS, AND FUNDING FOR NEW HEALTH PROFESSIONS BUILDING A $1,200,000 gift from Don and the late Julie Julien serves as the lead gift for this new building. Once the Mabee Foundation challenge grant has been met, and with other grants and donor gifts, over $6,200,000 will be secured for this building project. Humphrey announced that the Sunderland Foundation had approved the College’s grant request for one million dollars to support the construction of a new health professions building on the Missouri Valley campus. The Sunderland Foundation was established in 1945 by Lester T. Sunderland, who served as President of the Ash Grove Cement Company for 33 years as a highly respected leader in the cement industry. On March 21, 2022, Missouri Valley College received two million dollars from Community Project Funding. U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) secured these funds in Community Project Funding with the passage of H.R. 2471. Congressman Cleaver came to the campus of Missouri Valley College to officially congratulate college constituents on receiving these funds. On August 22, 2022, Missouri Valley College received a $655,000 challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation. This grant is contingent on the College raising the remaining fundraising portion of $380,940 by July 12, 2023.

Ed Leslie (aka Mr. Viking) is a beloved MVC professor who taught mathematics at Missouri Valley for 45 years. His impact on students was immense, and he has always embodied what it means to be a servant leader. He selflessly gave of himself and his resources time after time to help ensure every student's success. Multiple students testify that they owe their academic success and future careers to Ed Leslie. Several of his students, including "Rico" Allen '77, Raul Roldan, '77, and J.C. Allen, '77, are joining to create the Ed Leslie Endowed
Scholarship. "Rico" and Raul both attribute their successful careers to the influence and encouragement of Ed Leslie. Mr. Leslie encouraged the first-generation students to excel in school and to always do their best. This endowment will ensure that Professor Leslie's legacy of generosity and investment in the lives of students lives on for decades to come. Ed is known for riding his old yellow Ford Model T "Henrietta" into the football stadium on game days, and he still does that to this day. If you, too, have great memories of Ed Leslie, consider giving to this endowed scholarship here. "My friends and fellow alumni – Raul Roldan and J.C. Allen
and I, established the Ed Leslie Scholarship Endowment to invest in the future of our great school and its students today and in the future. The three of us came from very humble beginnings and recognized that the success we've enjoyed and the blessings our families have shared might never have been realized if not for Missouri Valley College. We were not prepared for college academics and probably would not have succeeded at a big school. I really want to emphasize not just what Ed did, but the appreciation we have for him and all the things Ed Leslie has done, not just for Missouri Valley, but for students across the board. 30 Years of Service Sharon Hoeflicker
What different roles did you hold over the years at MVC? I was in the Business Office in Ferguson Center for 9 years, then moved to Baity Hall in 2001 to be Dr. Earl Wellborn’s Administrative Assistant in the Education Office. In 2005, Dr. Wellborn was appointed Chief Academic Officer and I moved up with him to be his Administrative Assistant. I held that position (and had four other bosses after Dr. Wellborn) until I retired May 31, 2022, ending with the title of Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Can you describe a few of your favorite memories during your time at MVC? I have so many wonderful memories of my time at MVC. In 2007, I was honored with being named the President’s Staff Excellence Award winner, and in 2013 I was named the Valley Women’s Hall of Fame Outstanding Woman, two very special times for me. I’ve always enjoyed the Homecomings and seeing former students. The Academic Affairs Office is in charge of Convocation and the MVC Scholar awards banquet. I enjoyed planning and facilitating Valley was my second home for 30 years, so my last day of work on May 31 was a little bittersweet. I’ve worked with a lot of great people over the years. I worked under four Presidents and have had five bosses in the Vice President of Academic Affairs Office, so lots of memories there. While I knew I was ready to retire, I was a little anxious about it because I still liked my job and the people I worked with, and my community connections/involvement identified me with Missouri Valley. So saying goodbye was hard. My retirement reception was so special and heartwarming. I received so many nice notes, emails, and phone calls from faculty and staff that meant so much to me. It was surreal and felt funny that I would not be setting my alarm and going into work the next day. How will you continue to stay connected and involved with MVC? I will always be a Viking fan cheering from the sidelines. can. I’ll still enjoy attending Valley socials, events, and games and keeping in touch with my Valley friends. And being Ken Kujawa’s sidekick will help me stay connected too. Over my 30 years, I’ve watched Valley grow and change and will continue to be an advocate for the institution. Anything else you want to add about your thoughts or feelings on Missouri Valley? I am proud to say that I worked at Missouri Valley College for 30 years. I’m grateful that God put me at Valley and enriched my life in so many ways. I’m thankful for the experiences I had and the friendships made. Valley will always be in my heart. Valley Will Roll!

1960s 1 | The ladies of Alpha Xi Delta (AZD) gathered in August for a reunion. This trip consisted of a two day stay at a local bed and breakfast, a tour of Arrow Rock, a Missouri Valley Alumni Social, Nicholas-Beazley Aviation Museum and a tour of Missouri Valley College led by the External Relations Team. The ladies remincied of times gone by and how much the campus has changed. 2 | MVC Alumni had a great meal and visit in Overland Park, KS. L to R: Grover Redford (student ‘66 - ‘68), Cathie Jeffries (‘71), Nelda Shouse Tomlinson (‘71), David Tomlinson (‘69), Marcia Bowles Brown (‘69) and Ron C Brown (‘69). 1970s 3 | David Power ‘74 Retires after 45 years of teaching at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL. During his career, he spent 29 years coaching girls basketball, in fact, he was the only girls basketball coach in their school history. He won more than 1,000 games and three state championships. 1980s 4 | Alpha Xi Delta (AZD) sisters from the mid 80’s got together in Destin, Florida in January of 2022. Tiffany is a licensed real estate agent and owns her own business, Simply Realty in Marshall, MO. 11 | John Boswell - ‘06 Named head boys basketball coach at Morrill High School, Morrill, NE. 12 | Jayson Thornton CFP ‘06 served as a speaker at the 14th Annual Maastricht Institute on the Missouri Valley Campus. Jayson owns his own business, Thornton Advisor Group in St. Louis, MO. 13 | Kirby Kueker-Rugen ‘08 Marshall Public Schools - Southeast Educator of the Year 2021-2022. 14 | Dom Giangrosso - ‘10 On March 25, 2022 Dom was named new assistant principal of Grain Valley High School, Grain Valley, MO beginning with the 2022-2023 school year. 15 | Gabriela Morales ‘14 As of June 2022, was named Director of the Student Success Center. 16 | Zavon Moore ‘16 and Kenzie (Fredrickson) Moore were married on May 13, 2021. They also welcomed a little girl, Eliza Moore, to the world on June 3, 2022. 17 | Mohamed Diyani ‘17 As of May 2022, was named the Director, Mergers and Acquisitions at Harris Computer, a software development company in Ottawa, Ontario. 18 | Kimberley Ndlovu ‘19 is a PhD Student at the Ohio State University studying Microbiology. She is from Zimbabwe and currently based in the United States. Kimberley was recently featured (May 31, 2022) on The Root of The Science Podcasts. In this episode she shares her journey to science that includes living in four countries. She discusses her current research projects, the main one involving phage therapy. Kimberley shares in detail the importance of this work. 19 | Shane Clary ‘20 and Kayleigh (Barnes) Clary ‘2019 were united in marriage on May 14, 2022. 20 | Megan Ferguson ‘22 as of March 2022, was Appointed President of The Missouri Nursing Students’ Association. 21 | Maddie Vogelsmeier ‘22 A 2022 graduate of Missouri Valley College with a degree in Marketing and Graphic Design was recently hired by Central Methodist University as Webmaster. 22 | Four Valley Alumni are teachers and head coaches at Lawson High School. The Student Research Symposium is a professional opportunity for our students to share academic, professional, and creative work with the entire campus community. Twice a year, students can participate in the Symposium with submissions of original research, reviews, scholarly essays, creative writing, performance, film and original artwork. During the symposium, outstanding student work is recognized with three awards for excellence in undergraduate student research.

Associate Professor of Psychology Instructor - MACC Program Jennifer Livengood
When did you join the MVC faculty? I started teaching at Valley in August 2010.
What degree(s) do you hold, and from where? I completed my Bachelor's degree in General Psychology at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO, then went on to graduate school at Kansas State University where I earned my Master of Science in Social/ Developmental Psychology. What is something that people may not know about you? Most people don't know, and are surprised to find out, that I was a cheerleader in high school and traveled to Sydney, Australia to perform in the Royal Easter Parade with a cheerleading All-Star group. More recently, I'm re-teaching myself how to play piano. What is a hobby you enjoy outside of teaching? I love to read and spend time with my family - my husband, three children, and a new puppy keep me very busy! What do you enjoy most about teaching at MVC? I really like the fact that our small class sizes allow me to know each student by name and get to know them individually. It allows me to develop lasting relationships where past students will contact me years later to let me know how they're doing! What do you teach at MVC and what other areas of campus are you involved in? I teach the courses in social and developmental psychology in the undergraduate psychology program, and I also teach those subjects in the Master's in Community Counseling program. I'm the co-chair of the Student Research Symposium that happens every semester, and I'm a faculty rep for the new Diversity and Inclusivity Initiative on campus.
