GENERAL MANAGER Wow . .. how time flies . .. especially when one is enjoying oneself! That’s it in a nutshell as to my first 60 days at Outdoor Resort Palm Springs. Your warm welcomes, smiles and waves, but most im- portant, your directions when I was

I know we say this every year, but wow did this season go fast! This was a year of some pretty significant changes. Not the least of which was our General Manager, Clint Atherton, leaving the resort for another opportunity. We then brought in Ed Vitrano as an interim General Manager and hired him as the permanent replacement for Clint. Not to mention we have two new Board members. Welcome Ed, Mike and Bob! I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dede for four years of dedicated service to the ORPS community. Also, a big thanks to MaryEllen for stepping in to fill the vacancy created by a resignation of a Board Director. Finally, thanks to Ted Wilson for his 5 years of dedicated service on the Board of Directors and Chair of the A&A Committee. With all that we did accomplish this season, there is much more to do. This summer we will be working on updating the Administrative Policies and Procedures, along with working with Ed and his staff to make sure the resort is fully ready for the next season. Including insuring that all of the maintenance issues identified this season are resolved; the kitchen is fully functional, and new laundry equipment installed. So, for now, I say goodbye and I look forward to seeing you all next season. Take care and safe travels.

lost, has been most appreciated! To say the 60 days has been busy is an understatement. Reshaping the budget, organizing and attending Board meetings & hearings have dominated my time and energy but will slow down as I get more familiar with the rhythms of the community. I have met with senior staff both individually and collectively and had an all-hands meeting, which we will do three times a year, to set expectations for the immediate future. I don’t know if you are aware but the tenure ranges from 2.5 weeks to 30 years . . . an impressive range of experience. I found that the team is energetic and willing to fulfill my philosophy of “Ladies and Gentlemen Serving Ladies and Gentlemen.” We live in unique times. With the pandemic we are facing, members are leaving the Resort sooner than in the past and this article might find you already on the road or at your “alternate” home. I hope your trip went well. We’ll be busy this summer getting ready for the next season. I trust when you return to your oasis in the fall/winter that you will find the property refreshed and glistening just as I hope you are. Until then, safe travels Ladies and Gentlemen. Edwin J. Vitrano, GM

OFF SEASON PREPARATION

PLANNING COMMITTEE For the Planning Committee, the 2019-2020 season was a time of transition and less hectic than past seasons. The main reasons for this were the merger of the

A Message from Your Management Team A few simple preparations will help keep your lot free of problems over the summer: 1. Summer temperatures and irrigation trigger rapid growth of weeds and hedges. Ask your landscaper to give your hedges an extra trim right now before you leave. Ask them to monitor your lot over the summer. 2. Group your patio items closely together and cover with Sunbrella or other high-quality furniture covers. Blue tarps from Harbor Freight and Home Depot decompose rapidly in the summer sun and are not reliable. Replace older covers that may rip during high summer winds. 3. Please be reminded that RV covers are limited from March 15 to November 15. 4. Carefully lock RV compartments and dog houses. Secure any bicycles. 5. Do not turn off the breaker that controls your front lot light. Edison charges everyone a minimum monthly fee that covers the cost of the light. 6. Be sure your address, phone and email address is updated with the Association office. 7. We wish you a safe and carefree summer. You are welcome to call the contacts below at any time and request a security and/or compliance check of your lot.

Strategic Planning and Facilities Planning Committees and the commencement of a Strategic Planning process. Having said that, the Committee did develop a couple of smaller projects at the Board’s direction. The dissolution of the two Committees and the formation of the Planning Committee and new Charter were approved at the December 16 Board meeting. There was also a change in leadership, as Chair Doug Folsom resigned in December and a new Chair (myself) and Secretary (Carolyn Candler) were elected. In addition, four new members were appointed to the Committee: Michael Curley, Paul Haberman, Brenda King and Bob Livingston. The Planning Committee developed a new Mission, Vision and Core Values that better reflect the future of the resort and to help guide its management. These were adopted by the Board at the February 27 meeting. The Committee also provided feedback to the Board regarding the membership survey that was distributed on March 6. In January the Board directed the Committee to provide information on two smaller projects: 1) To work with the General Manager for the development of an RFP to remove the existing grass around the west, south and east sides of the Pickleball and Tennis Courts and replace it with pet friendly materials such as decomposed granite (DG) and to replace the grass in the dog area near the Security shack with DG. 2) With assistance from the GM, develop a budget and plan to create a Tennis Center Meeting Area at the La Palma Tennis Courts. Both projects were presented and approved at the March 9 Board meeting. Many thanks to all Committee members – Carolyn Candler, Secretary, Michael Curley, Alice Heuple, Vice Chair, Paul Haberman, Brenda King, Bob Livingston, Sheryl Nelson, Dan O’Melia and Debbie Smith for their enthusiasm and efforts this season. As always, all owners are welcome to attend any Planning Committee meeting to provide your ideas, suggestions and thoughts. Our Committee is dedicated to doing the work that is in the best interest of the resort as we continue to strive to be a premier RV resort. Kathy McCune Chair

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

Thursday, November 19, 2020 3:30PM Owners’ Lounge American Dirt By Jeanine Cummins

Luca and Lydia, a mother and son, flee Mexico in fear of their lives after her husband has been murdered and his family threatened. As they travel they become two of the undocumented immigrants from Latin America to undertake the dangerous journey to the United States. Washington Post critic Polly Rosenwaike calls American Dirt a “profoundly moving reading experience.” USA Today’s Barbara VanDenburgh calls the book “problematic”. Embroiled in controversy, this book should provoke a lively discussion as its merits and weaknesses are considered. EVERYONE IS WELCOME

CHAVALLA'S HEALTH CORNER Reminder of our two fundamental functional medicine questions: What is too much that may be causing me harm? What is not enough that could be helpful? Right now it is important to remain calm but vigilant. Too much media, worry, fear is not helpful. Not enough sleep, nutritious food, moderate exercise and supportive connection can all impact our immune system. We recommend taking an honest inventory of what you can do to boost your innate immune system. Our bodies are made to protect us in these times. We are resilient creatures. Giving our bodies the support they need to function optimally also gives us something to do right now! Think basics: Minimize alcohol, sugar, processed foods, stress and unnecessary activities. Maximize micronutrients, fresh air, movement and sleep. 2ND 5-K WALK/RUN : Successful and fun! It was so fun to see so many of you out and exercising. On behalf of the Health and Fitness committee and Dog Committee we want to express our thanks for supporting our event. Also a big shout out to the canine Spa and Pet Hotel for donating such awesome gifts that were part of all the prizes we had to giveaway. Dr Brossfield brought in over 100ppl for her topic on brain health in the owners lounge. Awesome topic and well received. HEALTH AND FITNESS FAIR was cancelled due to coronavirus scare. See you all next season!

STEAK FRY Put on by Bob & Michelle Moore and helpers. THANK YOU

ORPS CHAPEL

When Martin Luther was dealing with The Black Death plague, he wrote these wise words that can help inform the way we approach things happening in our world right now: I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me however I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely as stated above. See this is such a God-fearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not tempt God. it’s time to join the ORPS Ukulele group. The new season begins Saturday, November 7 and beginners and skilled players are invited. The beginners’ workshops will be held every Saturday, 12PM-1PM in the West Room of ES. This is followed by group lessons and play for all levels at 1-3:30PM. This season’s group performed for five events: Christmas concert, pickleball Hawaiian party, phase party, 19th Hole, and Resorters’ Choir concert. This is a popular activity so the last time to join will be January 16, 2021. Anyone wanting information or to be added to the email list can contact: Marilyn Sabens at marilyn.sabens@gmail.com. Beginners can start practicing over the summer with free lessons on YouTube from Cynthia Lin. Lessons #1-6 are a great foundation. We look forward to welcoming new players. Luther's Works Volume 43 pg 132 the letter "Whether one may flee from a Deadly Plague" written to Rev. Dr. John Hess. ORPS UKULELE CLUB If you’ve ever wanted to play a musical instrument, make new friends, and perform on stage,

ALL ARE WELCOME

Thanks for another great year of Chapel. To all who attend it is exciting to gather and praise the Lord, be challenged by the Bible and from speakers and singers who are fabulous and make the Christian life come alive. To those who don't attend there is next season, and you are welcome to join us. We have outstanding speakers/musicians lined up. Worried about the coronavirus? Who isn't? Turn in your Bible to II Chronicles 20: 12 to the end of the chapter. King Jehoshaphat and his nation Judah were surrounded by three invading armies. He calls out to God what shall l do? The answer is somewhat astonishing. 1. Gather all the singers and have them go out ahead of the soldiers singing. Sounds strange, not too effective. 2. Have the people pray. Always effective 3. Tell people what God has done for you and enable them to place their faith in Me. Singing was giving praise by faith to God who enabled them to give praise in the middle of a crisis. Anticipate victory and claim it ahead of time. Praying is always effective and the only way to beseech God’s blessing in times of trouble. People asked how can you be so calm at a time like this? We trust God to give the victory to our nation. Follow these steps and read the Scripture passage. Have a great summer see you next season. Hebrews 11: 6

at the resort is acknowledged and appreciated. Hal Mortenson and Mike Schnarr are carrying on with their second year on the committee. Two additional men and four women will be named to the committee in time for next season. MEN’S CHAMP IS STEPHEN ORNELLAS WOMEN’S CHAMP IS TRISH HALL . BOTH ARE REPEAT CHAMPIONS FROM 2019! B flight winners Fred Hyde & Lori Peterson, and C flight winners John Mullins & Susan Newman. Congratulations to all.

Here’s a few of our HIO Lucky golfers caught on camera … Ken Yochim, Christine Anderson, Betty McCullough, Duane Schram

Since late spring of 2019, 68 Holes In One (HIO) have been reported to the golf committee. Twenty five of those were first HIOs for those players at the resort. Thirty six bag tags were ordered and 19 perpetual plaques were placed on the large plaques in the pool room. Six players chose to engrave a subsequent HIO on an existing bag tag. If you achieve a HIO after the middle of March, please save your scorecard until next fall and the new committee will take care of reporting and ordering. Congratulations to all the "lucky" golfers this year. See you in the fall when maybe you can share the luck??? Golf in the Fall Preliminary discussions in golf meetings in March 2020 identified some potential new events and changes to existing games so next year could be very exciting. Plan to join us then.

Registration for the club championships in golf was slightly higher than in 2019 and 75 players completed the two day event (shortened due to the rain March 12). The rough was as challenging as it has been all winter and the greens had a lovely, quick pace. Well done to everyone who signed up and tested their golf skills under pressure.

TENNIS NEWS FROM ORPS

Our crazy 7.0 65+ team beautiful ladies.

Whew! Another season has come to an end and it didn’t disappoint. From league play, to Top Gun play, to the Horse Races and Mixers, so much fun

tennis and comraderies. I am looking forward to next year as we add more activities to the schedule; a Mixed Top Gun, a Calcutta tournament and a new morning schedule for the 4.0/4.5 team. We would like to thank Don Renoe, our Board liaison, for his advice and overseeing that things at the resort level got completed.

Our Men’s 3.5 team. Swept their last match.

We are also looking forward to our new tennis center. Many thanks to Brian Farrell, John Maysmith, Paul Haberman, Doug Denham, and Kim Krahn, for volunteering to work on this project. It will be beautiful when finished. Our Men’s and Women’s Top Guns were well attended. The Men’s winner was Mike Henry and the Women’s winner was Katie Lind.
