Improve Company Performance In Four Ways That Build Trust BY YORAM SOLOMON Building trust in your organization greatly benefits the employees, the culture, and the organization’s performance, which are all tightly relat- ed. Building trust is undoubtedly important for a company, and increas- ing the level of trust could have a transformative effect. Building trust would be easy only if two conditions are met. First, that trust would be absolute. In other words, that there is an absolute, universal set of behaviors that, if followed, would build trust for every-

The Royal Group Acquires Progress Container & Display Cicero, Illinois based The Royal Group (TRG) has announced the acquisition of Winder, Georgia based Progress Container & Display, a provider of corrugated packaging for in- dustrial, retail, e-commerce, and point-of-pur- chase display customers. “This is a fantastic opportunity for TRG to expand our capabilities and solutions for our customers” said Bob McIlvaine, CEO. “Prog- ress Container is a well-respected name in our industry and their commitment to high graphics solutions and state-of-the-art equip- ment further enhances our mission statement to provide value added solutions to the most demanding customers.” Progress Container marks the 17th man- ufacturing facility and 37th TRG location na- tionwide. The acquisition supports TRG’s strategic focus centered around growth, inno- vation, and people. “We’re thrilled to welcome Progress Container to the TRG family,” said John Schwarz, General Partner at Schwarz Partners. “Their talented employees and im- pressive capabilities align perfectly with our company.” This will be the second TRG location in

one. Second, that all it took to change behavior would be to know what behavior you wanted to change and what new behavior you would like to adopt instead. Unfortunately, neither condition is true. Trust is neither absolute nor universal. While some behaviors (such as telling the truth) are universal, others are not. In fact, the same behavior that would cause one person to trust you could cause another person to distrust you—for example, risk-takers trust other risk-takers, but those who avoid risk will not trust risk-takers because they believe they are irresponsible and reckless. Furthermore, it is not enough to know what behavior you want to change Knowledge is not enough. Behaviors are very hard to change. One study found that even if you know your goal, your probability of achieving it is only 10 percent. Even if you committed, set a timeline, and made a plan to achieve that goal, your probability is still limited to 50 percent. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

Several years ago, Sorenson said he installed a Baysek C-170 in a plant he was running. “The C-170 allowed us to move problematic items from our rotary die-cutters, which significantly increased throughput on those machines,” Sorenson said. “The C-170 also opened new markets to the plant, of- fered innovative solutions to our customers, and quickly became an employee favorite because of its ease of op- eration. The price point and small footprint of the Baysek allowed for a solid ROI and easy installation.” Baysek believes Sorenson’s extensive and diverse background in the corrugated converting industry will be an asset when working with Baysek customers, both exist- ing and future. Leadership teams from Apex International and Guardian Construction were onsite to conduct the groundbreaking in mid-August. The new property will sit on more than 12 acres of land and occupy over 58,500 square feet, more than twice the size of the Donora manu- facturing site. The facility’s primary purpose is to expand and elevate the manufacturing and warehousing capabilities of Apex International’s anilox roll and sleeve, glue set, metering roll and print maintenance products. Construction on the property began August 22, 2022, with an expected occupancy date in 2024. The Fallowfield facility is part of Apex’s “Vision: 2020s” plan, a multi- phase growth strategy, announced in Spring 2021. Vision:2020s entails in- vestments in new buildings, new production equipment, and new person- nel, in order to scale up production capacity and elevate product quality. “Apex International planned major investments into global facilities and capital equipment to address anticipated industry growth,” states Ruud van Cuijk, Managing Director of Apex North America. “It is exciting to wit- ness the initiative come to fruition - this long-awaited expansion will give our customers much quicker order turnaround and much more.” Apex International’s “Vision: 2020s” plan includes significant expan- sion in each of its five global manufacturing facilities. As part of it’s phased growth strategy, new buildings, new production equipment, and new per- sonnel will enable Apex to scale up production capacity while elevating industry benchmarks for quality. Apex will be better positioned to meet increased demand from its flexo, label, and corrugated customer base for reliable, predictable, and durable metering products. Improve Performance (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1)

• Creating a S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable but not too easy, relevant and impactful, and time- bound) plan that will allow you to form new behaviors that would negate the current ones. The plan should consider the process of forming new habits. • Execute until the new habit becomes automatic and doesn’t require thinking and effort anymore. Sound easy? Well, it’s not. There are too many places where you can make mistakes. You may identify a rela- tionship that is not critical, or the dependency of the other person in you is not important enough. You may identify the wrong behavior to work on and spend time and effort trying to fix a behavior that is not holding you back from being more trusted in that relationship while not working on the behavior that does. Your plan might be too easy, too hard, not impactful enough, or otherwise easy to drop before forming new habits. Finally, according to that study, even if you do everything right, you still only have a 50 percent probability of success. How can you increase your odds? The rest of this article will describe four approaches to building employee trustworthiness. Self-Study You could learn by reading books, taking online cours- es, or otherwise individually. Pros : • You can do it at a convenient place and time. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

You must first identify specific, critical relationships and specific behaviors that you must change in them. Those could be different in different relationships. Then, you must form new habits that will change your behaviors and build your trustworthiness, and thus the trust other people have in you. Even then, it takes time and many repetitions of the new behavior before it becomes natural. It won’t happen overnight. Sound complicated? It’s achievable but requires a dif- ferent approach than what you have heard about trust. If you want your efforts to be effective, that is. The process of increasing your trustworthiness has the following steps: • Identifying a critical relationship in which another em- ployee (could be a coworker, a boss, or someone who reports to you) depends on you. If they don’t trust you, they will not rely on you. • Identifying your specific behavior that holds you back from being trusted by that person. Remember that trust is relative. That behavior might not cause someone else to distrust you, but it does cause the other person in this critical relationship not to trust you. The reason for focusing on bad behavior is because people re- spond much stronger (and negatively) to bad behavior than they do (positively) to positive behavior. Research proved that many times.

• You have an opportunity to interact with others and learn from their challenges. • You can also ask the facilitator to review your plan. • Peer pressure can provide motivation. Cons : • You are still prone to making mistakes in identifying the right relationship and the behavior holding you back from being more trusted. • You still lack an accountability partner, threatening the retention of what you learned. External Coach You could either hire an external coach or have the company hire one to take you through the process. Pros : • A coach is more experienced with the process and hu- man nature. • A coach could be your accountability partner through- out the execution phase and increase your probability of forming a new habit from 50 percent to 95 percent. Cons : • The coach may not be familiar with the company’s people, dynamics, and culture. • You may not trust the coach due to being external to the company and knowing them for a very short time. • They can be costly, especially if coaching multiple people in the company. Internal HR Professional The ultimate solution might be right under your nose—your HR professional. Pros : • They are already trained and experienced

• You can do it at your own pace. • It is typically the cheapest alternative on a per-person basis. Cons: • Lacking deep knowledge and experience, you are more likely to make mistakes, such as identifying the wrong relationship or the wrong behavior to focus on. • Your retention will be the lowest, and so will the proba- bility of forming new habits, given that nobody is hold- ing you accountable. Workshops You could attend an open enrollment or company-spon- sored workshops to help create the right plan. Pros : • Workshops typically address multiple employees in the company in parallel.

DESIGNS THAT INCREASE PRODUCTION

in human behavior in the organizational set- ting, and addressing these human resources issue (trust) fits their job description. • They are internal to the company and are very familiar with the people, the internal dy- namics, and the corporate culture and goals. • Having worked with the employees they are helping, they are more trusted by those employees than an external coach would. • They are already on the company’s pay- roll. The conclusion is straightforward: building trust in the organization is not simple. It should be addressed one relationship at a time, iden- tifying behaviors that hold one party to that re- lationship from being more trusted by the oth- er party. It should also be treated by forming new habits that change behaviors, build trust, and transform the organization. This new feature harnesses current sensor information along with historical downtime data to provide not only an up-to-date picture of the state of your equipment, but ac- tionable information about future functioning – so opera- tors can make proactive decisions about their machines. The algorithms no longer simply provide diagnostic infor- mation about past machine performance: they’re now pro- viding a picture of ongoing and future performance. An initial case study found that 74 percent of machine break- downs were accurately forecasted within a 30-minute win- dow using this new technology. This gives operators the chance to make decisions in advance before a possible interruption occurs. The ability to provide these kinds of advanced predic- tions was previously only theoretical. But now these ma- chine learning models are fully operational and live on the platform for select Helios customers. Early adopters of this powerful new technology are already reducing main- tenance costs by 30 percent and eliminating equipment breakdowns by 70 percent. When you consider that the average box plant can expect to save $122,000 per year per machine with just a 20 percent reduction in downtime, the savings potential is truly vast. Don’t miss Gopakumar’s “What’s New Session” presen- tation at Corrugated Week 2022, where he’ll be offering a glimpse at Helios’ new failure prediction capabilities.

MHIA To Showcase Prefeeder For EVOL At Corrugated Week 2022 The Corrugating Machinery Division of Hunt Valley, Mary- land based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America has an- nounced its new and much-anticipated Mitsubishi Pre- feeder for EVOL at Corrugated Week 2022 (Booth #201) on September 19-21 in San Antonio, Texas. The announcement coincides with an important mile- stone as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America (MHIA) re- cently sold its 200th EVOL in North America. “In close collaboration with our customers, we are con- stantly investing and innovating to best serve their needs for productivity, accuracy, and profitability,” said Shoji Isoai, President, MHIA Corrugating Machinery Division. “The Mit- subishi Prefeeder is the latest technological breakthrough that comes with the ‘vote-of-confidence’ represented by the landmark 200th EVOL sold in North America.” The new Mitsubishi Prefeeder ensures faster through- put and the front-of-line reliability required to keep the MHIA’s premium line of EVOL box-making equipment func- tioning with maximum efficiency. In productive use across multiple facilities in the EU, the Mitsubishi Prefeeder is now available for customers in North America. The Mitsubishi Prefeeder is currently available for the EVOL 84 and EVOL 100 – either 350bpm or 400bpm – or for any equipment that is a top printer. It can run a con- tinuous shingle of either singlewall or doublewall sheets with a minimum sheet of 8.7-inches by 27.2-inches and a maximum sheet of 37-inches by 100-inches and features a lifting device that reverses the sheet stack. “Our research indicates that 50 percent of equipment downtime is caused by auxiliary equipment, with the pre- feeder accounting for 38 percent of that number,” said Isoai. “The new Mitsubishi Prefeeder will dramatically re- duce downtime and maximize the productive of EVOL.” EVOL customers are giving the company high marks across the board. “It’s quite simple – from the MHIA Sales Team, to the Vice President and all the way through to the tech guys – I have never in my life on the converting side had such a good experience throughout,” said Richard Goldberg, VP of Operations, President Container. According to Brian Healy, General Manager, Carolina Container, “The EVOL is a great selling tool for us. Every- one wants to see it and it’s so impressive and it produces such a precise and clean box; it’s the highlight of the tour.” “Listen, we could have bought any machine we wanted but there wasn’t any real conversation about it – it was EVOL all the way,” said Adam Tominsky, General Manager, Rand-Whitney. In addition to the Mitsubishi Prefeeder, the company will also be highlighting the following: • Introduced in 2021, the MC-100 is a state-of-the-art Flexo Folder Gluer that features ease of operation CONTINUED ON PAGE 28
