Hearing postponed due to hearing difficulties

The bail hearing for Robert Edgar, accused of killing his wife in January, was scheduled to go forward in Superior Court March 25, however delays were met due to Edgar’s issues with hea- ring loss. Robert Miller, Edgar’s defense lawyer, stated that he had only become aware of the hearing issue recently, and requested and adjournment until Edgar could obtain hearing aids, and the courtroom could be equipped with amplification equipment. The Honourable Justice of the Peace Robert Pelletier agreed, and set April 9 at 9:30 a.m. for re-adjournment. – Diane Hunter

partnership,” saidThompson. During a later interview, Barton explained why he and the township council had decided it was time for the municipality to become an official part of the SNC. “We just have a small portion in our southwest corner that does drain into the (South Nation River) system,” Barton said. “But we are using some of their services like everyone else.” SNC programs that have benefited the township in the past include the rural well monitoring and deactivation program. Bar- ton noted there are other programs that SNC offers that could prove valuable to the township. “The thing that particularly interests me is the treeplanting program,” he said. Because not all of the township area is co- ming under the official boundary extension for the SNC, the board allowed the munici- pality a reduction in the annual membership fee. Instead of $1000 a year, the township will pay SNC $500 for its membership privileges. “It’s a lot more than $500 we’ll be getting back in return,” said Barton. “I would say tenfold, if not more.”

It’s official now. Champlain Township is a designated part of the South Nation Conservation agency’s jurisdiction. Or at least a small part of the township is. The board of directors for the South Na- tion Conservation Authority (SNC) appro- ved a request-in-person from Champlain TownshipMayor Gary Barton to extend the agency’s watershed jurisdiction boundaries to include the Horse Creek drainage area, measuring about two square kilometres in total. “Not a very big part of our area falls in the (SNC) program,”Mayor Barton told the SNC board during its March 19 annual general meeting, “but we do receive some of the services. So we are jumping on the oppor- tunity to join this association.” The township’s request received unani- mous approval from the board. SNC Chair- man Doug Thompson welcomed Barton to stay for the rest of the meeting as the township’s official delegate to the board. “We look forward to a very productive

Great results for Job Fair

J’habite ici arrive dans le coin Some CSEPR programs include a Job Bank promoting regional employment, a placement agency, summer job bank, and workshops designed to help develop skills to find work. Free job counselling can help individuals with job search, explore different career possibilities, help preparing for interviews, and support. BDO offered a free seminar at both fairs for people who wanted advice on starting or buying their own business. A total of 31 people attended the seminar in Rockland, and 17 in Haweksbury. CSEPR is a non-profit centre that was founded in 1983. The centre posts more than 14,000 jobs per year and holds annual job fairs each year in Rockland and in Hawkesbury. The centre offers subsidised programs, tools and resources for both employers and job seekers. “It’s certainly with great pride that we notice that as the years go by, a reputation of quality is built in our community and beyond, in regards to the CSEPR Job Fair,” said André Roy, Executive Director for the Employment Services Centre.

The fair also had employment councillors on hand to help visitors prepare an effective résumé, receive job search assistance, and help students with summer job applications.

Books were wrapped up like a present with a blind date invitation showing only the genre of the book. The idea was to encourage people to read a book they would not normally read, or even try. Readers were encouraged to submit a ‘Rate my date’ form explaining how they liked the book.

heard about this method at a convention she went to. It’s such a great idea.” “You don’t have to join to come to a meeting,” said Higginson. “People can just come and see what we are all about.” The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at the community centre in Vankleek Hill. Membership is encouraged for a small fee in order to help defray costs. “We have speakers that come and talk to us about different things,” Higginson explained. “We have someone coming to talk to us about herbs and weeds soon.” Other speakers throughout the season speak on topics such as preventative medicine from the garden given byMonica Giacomin, floral décor for the home presented by Jill Crosby, and water gardening presented by PondWorld owners, Doug and Judy Harvey. The Vankleek Hill Horticultural Society met for the first time in January 1906 and held its first flower show in April 1907. In 1984, the society began the tradition of planting a tree with the graduating class at Pleasant Corners Public School. Mill Street Park was created by the society along with the collaboration of the town of Vankleek Hill in 1994. For more than 100 years, the Vankleek Hill and District Horticultural Society has been meeting to discuss horticulture and friendship. The society met March 19 to begin this year’s season and discuss a recent trip to the PhiladelphiaHorticultural Society (PHS) flower show, as well as upcoming events for this season. Severalmembers shared their experiences on the recent trip to Philadelphia. “It is the biggest indoor flower show in the world,” said Charles Freeman, district director. “You could easily spend three or four days in there just poking around in amazement at the work and incredible beauty.” Joan King, treasurer for the society, took several pictures at the PHS show. “There is a different theme for the show each year,” said President Mary Higginson. “The theme this year was based on PIXAR and Disney movies. They had the most fantastic flower arrangements.” The society has come up with some new initiatives for this year including a seed library at the Champlain Library. “You can go in and get just a few seeds with instructions,” Higginson said. “The librarian, Lynda Poyser,
