Le conseil municipal de Champlain a accepté les recommandations du directeur des travaux publics James McMahon, dans un rapport qu’il a présenté à la séance du conseil du 6 aout. Le rapport confirme que le site permanent de la statue en fibre de verre d’un orignal mâle, coiffé d’un splen- dide panache, sera près de l’intersection du chemin de comté 17 et de la rue Longueuil, près de la limite ouest du village. Le rapport portait essentiellement sur un projet d’entente contractuelle avec Andy Scherer Gardening & Landscaping Ltd. pour la conception et l’installation de la plate- forme de la nouvelle vitrine de bienvenue à L’Orignal, pour la statue de l’orignal. A bit of repair work is needed at the L’Orignal Marina and the fed- eral government is going to pay the whole bill. Age and years of buffeting and beating of wind and waves have taken a toll on some parts of the L’Orignal Marina installation. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DF0) did a recent inspection of the boating facility and sent a copy of its report later, to Champlain Township parks and recreation department, that the floating breakwaters need repairs. Breakwaters are artificial structures designed to “break the water” or other- wise protect either a marina installation or a shoreline from the effect of wave action. It helps provide a safe, secure, and quiet anchorage for boats. Township council received a parks and recreation department report on the DFO inspection during its August 6 session. The inspection report noted that parts of the floating breakwaters at the marina need repairs. The breakwaters, the marina cause- way, and the boat launch are all federal property. The township just leases use of the marina properties from the DFO. So the federal government will pay for the cost of repairs to the floating break- waters while the township arranges for a contractor to do the work. The DFO has set a maximum limit of $32,255, not including HST, for the cost of all repairs. The parks and recreation department contacted three contractors to ask for quotations for the work and received replies from two. Those quotes were passed on to the DFO for review and final approval.

Champlain Township staff needs answers to some questions they have about the proposed public transit pro- ject for the Prescott-Russell region. “The pilot project for an inter-municipal transit system, as well as a transportation service for vulnerable individuals within the United Counties of Prescott-Russell, is a positive initiative,” stated James McMahon, Champlain Township public works director, in an August 6 brief to council. Some proposed bus stop sites, McMahon observed, like the ones near the Beau’s Brewery on Terry Fox Road or at the municipal office on Pleasant Corners Road, are high- traffic areas with limited parking space available. Another concern with all the suggested sites, McMahon noted, is that people waiting for the bus will be exposed to the weather unless a proper bus shelter is provided.
McMahon noted that many of the suggested bus stop on the Vankleek Hill portion of the proposed Champlain Township bus route are located at sites that do not have sidewalks. The concern is about municipal liability for any accidents or injuries to residents going to and from any of those bus stops. Also, McMahon noted, township staff are busy during winter with

This service will focus on riders in rural areas who have mobility and other issues that make it difficult for them to use regular public transit service. A cool new splash pad addition is almost ready at Sacha’s Park in L’Orignal. “It was planned for July and will be ready in July,” said Lisa Burroughs, Champlain Township parks and recreation director, adding that if weather delays some of the work, it should be ready before the end of August. The splash pad is the second phase for the Sacha’s Park project to develop an accessible neighbourhood park, which children and adults with mobility issues can enjoy, along with all other residents of L’Orignal and neighbouring communities. Burroughs said a notice, when the splash pad is ready to operate, will be posted on the township’s Facebook page. She noted, however, there was growing interest during the recent heatwave in the new recreation addition to the park.
The splash pad is the final addition to the park, which began as a memorial project of the Chenier family to honour Sacha Chenier, a local child with mobility issues. The family fundraised almost all of the money needed for the first phase of the project and received in-kind support from local businesses and TFSWJDF DMVCT GPS QMBZHSPVOE FRVJQNFOU and other materials. The township provided the site for the park and has since taken responsibility for its maintenance as a municipal park. Funding for the splash pad addition to the park is split between an $87,000 federal accessibility grant approved earlier this year and a $52,000 allocation in the township’s municipal budget through parks and recreation department reserve funds and other sources.

De plus en plus de femmes font leur marque dans le monde des affaires de Prescott-Russell et dans le reste du Canada, et le gouvernement fédéral aide à soutenir un plus grand nombre de futures femmes entrepreneures . « Les femmes entrepreneures et chefs d’entreprise de Prescott-Russell apportent chaque jour des contributions incroyables à notre économie et à notre collectivité, a déclaré le député Francis Drouin de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. L’objectif du fonds WES est d’aider à doubler le nombre d’entreprises appartenant à des femmes, au Canada, d’ici 2025. Le programme est un projet conjoint des ministères de la Petite entreprise et de la Promotion des exportations et de l’Innovation, de la Science et du Développement économique.
Women entrepreneurs are a growing part of the business community in Prescott- Russell and the federal government wants to help more of them succeed. The Hawkesbury Royal Canadian Legion Branch 472 recently made two donations of $150 each. The Legion Branch’s 1st Vice-President Jack Hume presented the first cheque to the Alzheimer Society. Sunday was a good day at the 2019 Paul-Émile Séguin Classic Show and Shine in Vankleek Hill. The August 11 weekend event saw the owners of 68 classic and custom vehicles display their treasured automobiles for all to enjoy. They are off and running. More than 450 runners and walkers signed up for the inaugural La Baie Run in L’Orignal and braved the humidity and the warm midsummer morning temperature last Saturday to complete 10-kilometre, five-kilometre, or one-kilometre circuits of the village and a scenic route along La Baie Road which circles L’Orignal Bay on the Ottawa River.
