Le développement sur la 17 se dessine

L’ancien terrain de la PPG sur le chemin de comté 17.

STÉPHANE LAJOIE stephane.lajoie@eap.on.ca

On Thursday evening December 10, shortly after 8:30 pm, Hawkesbury OPP was conducting a RIDE initiative on McGill Street at Mill Entrance in Hawkes- bury, when a car stopped at the checkpoint. Conver- sation with the male driver gave the officer reason to believe that he had operated his motor vehicle with blood alcohol content over 80 mgs. Consequently, the driver, 45-year-old Jean Bourgeois of Vankleek Hill, was arrested and charged consequently. The vehicle was seized for seven days and the driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days. Bourgeois was later released and scheduled to appear in L’Orignal court on December 23. VCI raises money for refugees Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) Interact club has raised more than $1,440 for their Syrian Refugees Fundraising event, which included Henna Art, Art Silent Auction, and a Book Sale. The Hawkesbury Rotary Club donated $500 for the cause. The money will now be sent to UNI- CEF Canada where funds should be matched. “Thank you for all of your support from the VCI Interact Club,” said Ilze Hilliere, VCI teacher. “Be the change you wish to see in the world, indeed!” – Diane Hunter The Hawkesbury OPP is investigating a theft of copper wire that occurred sometime between December 9 and 13 at a property on Main Street West in Vankleek Hill. Someone trespassed on the property and stole 150 feet of hydro copper wire still on a spool. The matter is under investigation. Copper wire stolen in Vankleek Hill RIDE catches another impaired driver in Champlain

Illegal taxis in Hawkesbury

– Alexandra Montminy

Police request help in case of stolen boat

DIANE HUNTER diane.hunter@eap.on.ca

“It is unfortunate that some of our resi- dents are using the services of these illegal taxis without knowing who they are, in what condition vehicles are and if they have any insurance to protect them in case of an acci- dent,” Thibodeau continued. Hawkesbury Township Clerk Christine Groulx said she is not sure if Uber Taxis are here in Hawkesbury. “I’m told it’s people like you andme providing taxi service,” said Groulx. “This will be one of our priorities when we are back from holidays.” Legal ac- tions will be undertaken against and severe fines issued to anyone contravening to the Taxi By-law. There have been several cases of unregu- lated digital ride-sharing services in other cities. Earlier this year, the taxi union in Ot- tawa was seeking an injunction against Uber and its drivers. Similar cases are happening in cities across Canada and elsewhere.

The General Government Services Com- mittee discussed at its last meeting the situation concerning the taxi industry wit- hin the Town of Hawkesbury. The Town of Hawkesbury has been regulating the taxi business for decades. “The goal of this by-law is to ensure that people using taxis are safe and pay an amount that is fair and equal,” explained the committee president, Michel Thibodeau. “We ask for proof of insurance, vehicles have to be inspected on a regular basis, taximeters used and taxi drivers must obtain a permit and before these permits are issued, we check for their criminal background.” However, it seems that some people offer their transport services against compensa- tion, coming completely against the Taxi By-law N° 37-2004.

Photo OPP The Hawkesbury OPP needs help in solving the theft of a 16-foot boat, motor and trailer that took place sometime overnight between December 12 and 13 at a residence on Lajoie Street in Lefaivre. A 2014 black Glide trailer with a black 2014 Legend Pro-sport 16-foot boat was stolen from the victim’s property. The boat was equipped with a 2014 Mercury outboard motor. Information on this matter can be relayed to Constable Mathieu Desjardins at the Hawkesbury OPP at 613-632-2729 or 1-888-310-1122.

United Way chapters unite for refugees

Three regional United Way groups are joining forces for a United for Refugees campaign Three UnitedWays serving the communi- ties of Prescott-Russell, Lanark County and Renfrew County have joined the United for Refugees campaign to support refugees of the Syrian crisis. Funds raised will be used to support the sponsorship and settlement of refugees in these counties. “This fundraising effort focuses on get- ting resources to where they are needed themost and will have the greatest impact,” said Jodie Densmore, executive director for Centraide United Way Prescott-Russell (CUWPR). “Donations will be used to assist with sponsorship, provide counseling for refugees in their native language, mental health support, English- and French-lan- guage training, employment supports and more.” “We’re all heartbroken by the Syrian cri- sis, and members of our community are telling us they want to help,” said Fraser Scantlebury, executive director for United Way Lanark County (UWLC). “Together, we want to be prepared to support these refu- gees as they build a life in our communities.” United for Refugees is a community ini- tiative to raise funds for the sponsorship and settlement of people affected by the Syrian crisis. The federal government has committed to bringing 10,000 refugees to Canada by the end of 2015, and another 15,000 by March 2016. Following on United Way Ottawa’s suc- cessful launch, the United Ways of Lanark County, RenfrewCounty, and Prescott-Rus- sell are launching United for Refugees in an effort tomake sure that newcomers to these regions have the right tools to start a new life. Each regional United Way Centraide is now accepting donations for United for Refu- gees on their websites at unitedway-pr.ca, lanarkunitedway.com, and renfrewcountyu- nitedway.ca. Direct deposits to the campaign can be done at https://helpforcharities.com/ uwo/donate/community.php?language=e or https://helpforcharities.com/uwo/do- nate/community.php?language=f “UnitedWay has a long history of helping newcomers in our community,” said Gail Logan-McMeekin, executive director, for RenfrewCounty UnitedWay. “We knowwe can make a difference in the lives of those affected by the crisis in Syria.” Reality Tour coming back November’s Reality Tour was a great suc- cess according to council member Paul Emile Duval. “I think it’s the best $500 the township has ever spent.” Champlain Township donated the money for the event that took place November 14. There will be two more Reality Tours taking place February 20 and April 20, both at Pleasant Corners Public School. “If anyone has the chance to go, it’s really something,” said Duval. Each event can accommodate 100 people for the program. Council member Helene MacLeod said she would love to go, but doesn’t want to take the place of someone who may need the program. Duval said he would like for council members to attend to be witness to the praiseworthy effects of Reality Tour, to which Mayor Gary Barton agreed. – Diane Hunter

Champlain welcomes new recreation director

As of February 2016, Champlain Township will welcome a new addition to its staff. Lisa Burroughs will become the newRecreation Services’ director, working with her pre- decessor, Janis Renwick, for a few weeks in January to ensure a smooth transition. Burroughs, a resident of the township, comes with a wealth of experience in project management while with the Government of Canada. She has noticed that a lot of people, including young families, aremoving to the area. She would like to focus on youth within the community. Director Janis Renwick will be leaving in late January after 31 years at the helm, with the satisfaction that recreation and sports needs weremet. She said her greatest source of pride is the people she has met. “I would say that it’s the contacts that I have made with children and parents throughout the years, young people who have grown up and who are now bringing their own children to our facilities,” said Renwick. “It will be nice to do things around the house and the farm that I have always wanted to tend to. I admit to leaving with mixed feelings. I am thrilled about retiring, but I will miss a lot of things and the people that I have been in contact with. Also, I would like to point out that I would never have been able to do my job successfully without my long-time col- leagues, whose dedication to the Recreation Department has been and continues to be a great asset. The love and support of my

family, throughout the years, has been a great blessing to me.” Mayor Gary Barton said he was pleased with the arrival of the new director. “Rec- reation and sports activities have always been of great importance in our community. Whether it be hockey, soccer, tennis, Zumba ®, dancing or any other activity, families have relied on our services to lead an active life. Some of our athletes have gone on to excel in their chosen sports discipline and I like to think that their career started here, thanks to their trainers but also to Mrs. Renwick and her staff. Champlain Township is commit- ted to upholding these services and I am convinced that Mrs. Burroughs will work diligently towards that goal,” saidMr. Barton. “On behalf of Council, I also want to thank Janis Renwick for her years of dedication and I wish her an active and healthy retirement, whatever her projects may be.”

Lisa Burroughs will be the new Recreation Services’ director for the Champlain Township as of February 2016.

The Nation Fire Department has a one-time- only super freebie offer for homeowners to take advantage of during the pre-Christmas season. The department has 200 combination smoke/carbon monoxide detector kits to give away, for free, on a first-come-first-served basis throughout the four wards in the municipality, with 50 homes in each ward having a chance at getting a free detector. The home safety giveaway is courtesy of some extra funds the department has available after receiving some money from expense invoices paid out on a few major fire calls during the past year. Fire Chief Tobias Hovey explained that the department decided to use the surprise surplus funds to buy the smoke/ carbon monoxide alarms and give them away to help promote home safety and boost public awareness about the need to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on the premises. The department also used part of the invoice funds to buy an inflatable «fire prevention house» to take around to local schools and at special events to teach children, and also adults, about basic safety practices to prevent or deal with home fire situations. – Gregg Chamberlain

are a real problem in Hawkesbury. People just leave their cats behind when theymove, or don’t have them fixed, and then there are unwanted kittens. We trap, neuter, and release.” Bracelin said unwanted cats are often left to their own devices to survive the cold. Not all cats are adept at catching food and will often starve or freeze to death. Project TNR was started as a volunteer-based on- going effort to control the overpopulation of unwanted, abandoned and feral cats.

A pet and family photo booth was set up for those who wanted to bring in their pets for a family photo. “Our next step is to get registered so we can give tax receipts to people who donate,” explained Bracelin. “We are getting a lot of support, and we are very grateful. Some $2000 were raised for Sacha’s Park by L’Orignal resident Dale Garvin from the sale of his Christmas fruitcakes. The holiday cakes have been a popular item at local craft shows where Garvin has been selling them to raise money for the inclusive playground project set to be built in L’Orignal. Garvin is seen here selling his fruitcake at the L’Orignal Craft Show.

Project TNR held a Christmas fundraiser over the weekend, raisingmoney and awa- reness for helping homeless cats. “This is our first year doing this kind of thing,” said Pat Bracelin, founder of Project TNR inHawkesbury. “We are trying to draw more people to Hawkesbury and get more support for the cats.” Bracelin said since they started in 2003 they have spayed or neuteredmore than 500

Horses and a whole lot more

have medical or psychological issues and can’t be re-homed.They all come fromhor- rible places.” Gergily said some of the animals they have were severely neglected or abused. A horse named Sugar they found last Februa- ry, frozen to the ground. “We’ve had every kind of situation,” she said. “With Sugar, we had 12 people holding her up for six days. She couldn’t stand up. She was starved and frozen right to the ground. For two weeks after we had people staying with her. She would get weak and fall down. People would help her back up.The vet thought she would die, but she didn’t. After a while she decided she wanted to live. We fed her well, gave her a lot of supplements and love. She livened up and started doing really well. She’s put on 250 pounds and is doing great.” Gergily said the refuge rescues the ani- mals that no one else wants to deal with, ei- ther because they don’t have time or money to go rescue them. She deals a lot with other animal rescue organizations, and they will call if they are unable to do a rescue. “We take them all whether we have the money or not we go get them. Everyone deserves to be saved.” “These are not our pets,” explained Gergi- ly. “These are animals fromour community. We are asking people to help care for those in our community, including the animals. It’s our responsibility. I only ask that all animals be treated equally. It’s important.” Gergily has two children that have been raised around animals and have been taught to care for them. “They are good people,” smiled Gergily. “They don’t know anything else.” Gergily and her children are vegan, but don’t expect anyone else to do the same in order to help the animals. “Anyone can come and help,” explained Gergily. “We have one guy that said this place is his church. He is

There is a little place in Alexandria that takes care of horses and all kinds of ani- mals. Mostly rescued, abused and forgotten animals have found a havenwhere they can live out their days in peace and loving care. Refuge RR is run by Rose Gergily and about a dozen volunteers. They currently have about 80 horses, and a plethora of other creatures including a ferret, a cow or two, sheep, goats, geese, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs. “We started in Quebec,” said Gergily. “We’ve been here since 2004.” The refuge is currently on a farm with about 70 acres in Alexandria, and Ruby the cow often comes to greet those that enter. “I’ve always loved animals,” said Gergily. “When I was 11 years old, I heard about the seal hunt. It changed my world. I couldn’t believe how cruel some people could be.” Gergily received her first horse at the age of 13 and soon realized some of the other kids her age would get a new horse after a few years when they got tired of the old one. She was surprised to learn that some people felt the other horses were no longer useful. A lot of the horses would end up as food, or in abusive situations. “I worked at a vet’s clinic and helped a number of dogs that were going be eutha- nized,” Gergily explained. “Someone called and had a horse that needed help. It just snowballed after that.” Gergily soon realized there was a need for a safe refuge for horses and other animals. “We were federally registered in 1990, and then it just went crazy,” she laughed. “We get calls from other animal organizations. We try not to bring any of them here. We try to re-home them right away. A lot of the animals here are extreme cases. They either

in his twenties and lives in the city. He says he finds peace here.” RR Refuge holds a few volunteer days per year to help keep fences up, build new shel- ters and help out with whatever else needs to be done. Aside from the regular volunteers, people are asked to come and join in on the fun, and help out around the farm. Ger- gily hopes to hold another volunteer day in about a month when they have funding to build another shelter for a blind horse. “The sides need to be rubber so she doesn’t hurt herself,” said Gergily. “But it is expensive, and we need funds to do it.” Gergily said her biggest challenge is fun- draising. Although the refuge has been in the news several times, she said a lot of people still don’t know they exist and she needs the public’s help to keep things going, not only for donations but also to volunteer. “Kids

can come and get community service hours here,” said Gergily. “Also people who have to do community service for the law. Certain people can do their service here.” Gergily is now opening her doors to trou- bled kids. “Somehow they seem to help each other,” Gergily smiled. “They see animals that have been hurt and abused, and they think if they can do it, so can I. One young girl who had spina bifida came and we had a horse that had a back issue. The girl said the horse was just like her. It gave her so much inspiration. She did a school project on the refuge. It was great.” “Our goal is to stop the suffering,” said Gergily. “It would be really nice to have the communities get together and help. It can be hard to help with stuff across the world, but people can help right here.”
