le blé est mûr à la fin de juillet et sa récolte correspond à la fête de Sainte-Anne. Le blé est comme sacré pour eux et ils s’en servent pour décorer la fête. Depuis les 25 dernières années, lors de la fête de Sainte-Anne dans la communauté Jelsi de Montréal, le blé provient des champs de Sainte-Anne-de-Prescott.

STE-ANNE | « Ensemble, tout est pos- sible », a dit David Sherwood, maître de cérémonie lors de la messe célébrant le dixième anniversaire du pèlerinage à Sainte-Anne-de-Prescott, organisé par la paroisse locale et l’Association italienne Jelsi de Montréal. Parlant italien, français et anglais, M. Sherwood a souligné que, grâce à la col- laboration des deux communautés, l’événement qui a débuté il a y dix ans est devenu une tradition. « Ça fait déjà 10 ans que nous parta- geons notre foi et notre amour de Sainte- Anne », a dit Lise Martineau qui a complété sa dernière année comme présidente du comité organisateur. Les deux communau- tés sont enrichies par le rassemblement, a-t-elle ajouté. Le député provincial de Glengarry- Prescott-Russell, Grant Crack, le maire du canton de Hawkesbury-Est, Robert Kirby, et le député fédéral Pierre Lemieux étaient parmi les invités. Les Italiens originaires de Jelsi en Italie partagent une vénération pour Sainte-Anne depuis que leur ville na- tale a été miraculeusement épargnée lors d’un tremblement de terre massif qui a rasé les autres villes de leur région un 26 juillet, jour de la fête de Sainte-Anne. Le deuxième élément qui lie les deux communautés est le blé. À Jelsi, en Italie,

Constable Marc Lauzon is investi- gating the theft of two utility trailers from a backyard of a County Road 10 residence in Fournier July 17 and 18. July 17, a person knocked at the door of the victim’s residence. When no one an- swered, the suspect went into the back- yard and drove away in a grey minivan hauling a black trailer. The next morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., an elderly man, driving a green minivan was seen knock- ing on the door of the victim’s residence and then driving away from the backyard with another trailer hooked to the van. The trailers are a black 2008 Snow model 600, with a single axle, serial number 25WUW11A28G406246, with Ontario plate F1145B, valued at $800 and a black 2006 homemade MAK model with a single axle and Ontario plate D6129E. North Glengarry theft The Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry O.P.P. detachment is investigating the theft of a satellite dish from a residence on Sandfield Street in Alexandria. The theft occurred on the night of July 22-23. On the weekend, somebody smashed a window on a piece of unattended heavy equipment on Concession 15 of North The storm which affected the region late Monday kept SD&G OPP officers busy re- sponding to a variety of calls for service, ranging from downed trees and wires to activated alarms. Officers responded to a total of 16 calls for service. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Glengarry Township. Storm calls VANKLEEK HILL | The public is being asked to help police find three men follow- ing an attempted armed robbery at a High Street, Vankleek Hill residence July 19. The incident occurred at about 1:10 a.m. when two men, one armed with a weap- on, forced their way into the residence, assaulting a man and tying up a woman, reports the Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police detachment. The intruders did not find what they were looking for. The vic- tims were not injured. The male victim managed to flee; two suspects followed. A third suspect was seen in a black vehicle. The three men fled in the vehicle that was last seen heading south on Highway 34. One suspect is a white male, 5’8”, stocky, with a black ball cap, short hair, black T- Police seek help

The Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Po- lice detachment is investigating a string of break-ins in the district. Bike-riding burglar sought A bike may have been used as the get- away vehicle during a burglary at a Tele- graph Road, Alfred residence. On the night of July 17 and early morning of July 18, someone got into the house by breaking through a back door, reports the Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police de- tachment. Investigators suspect the thief would have left and returned on several occasions. The perpetrator may have been riding a bicycle, police say. Mary Street break-in July 17, shortly after midnight, a break and enter at a Mary Street, Hawkesbury residence was reported to police. The crook, who entered through a window, left with a 52-inch Toshiba television set. The theft would have occurred between 10:45 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. It would appear that an adjacent residence was also bro- ken into that night, again through a win- dow. But nothing was taken. July 22, shortly before midnight, police were alerted about a break and enter that occurred at a Lansdowne Street, Hawkes- bury residence. Between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., someone entered the apartment through a window and stole jewellery and a camcorder. 27 charges In the week of July 16 to 23, the Hawkes- bury O.P.P. detachment responded to 311 occurrences and laid 27 charges. Officers investigated two assaults, three break and enters and 16 thefts. There were three im- paired driving charges laid. Impaired charges In the early evening of July 16, a citizen called to inform police that a motorcy- clist had fallen from his motorcycle and appeared to be drunk. The motorcyclist had driven away. He was later intercept- ed in Hawkesbury. Mario Laliberté, 48, of Bédard Street in Champlain, was charged with operating a vehicle while his blood alcohol content was above the legal level. July 17, at approximately 11 p.m. an of- ficer stopped the driver of a white 2001 Oldsmobile Alero that was travelling on the Long Sault Bridge, swerving and roll- ing on a rim. The front driver’s side tire was blown off, police say. Ricky Bennett, 53, of Du Moulin Street in Alfred, was charged with assaulting a peace officer, impaired driving, dangerous operation of a vehi- cle, three counts of breach of probation, driving while disqualified, possession of cocaine and marijuana. He was also charged with driving with an improper tire, failing to surrender his permit, driv- ing without insurance and driving while alcohol was readily available. His mo- tor vehicle was impounded for 45 days and his licence suspended for 90 days. At about 3 a.m. July 20, an officer stopped a grey 2005 Toyota on the Long Sault Bridge. Jean Larocque, 46, of Catherine Street, Hawkesbury was charged with driving while his blood alcohol content

St-Isidore man faces first-degree murder

ST-ISIDORE | A young St-Isidore man now faces a charge of premeditated murder in the death of 24-year-old Joey Faubert. Martin Lamoureux, 18, had been origi- nally charged with second-degree mur- der following the discovery of the victim’s body June 30 on the property of the el- ementary school in St-Isidore. But that charge was upgraded to first- degree murder when Lamoureux appeared via video in L’Orignal Court last week. Nico Joseph Soubliere, 20, of Greely, and Cody

Henry, 19, of Ottawa, had earlier been charged with first-degree murder. Three others all face charges. An 18-year- old woman and a 16-year-old girl from North Stormont have been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable of- fence. A 17-year-old girl from Greely has been charged with being an accessory after the fact. The 18-year-old’s name is not be- ing released as it may identify the 16-year- old young person who cannot be named under theYouth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

Drivers’ patience will be put to the test over the next fewmonths as an overhaul of a section of Highway 34 in Vankleek Hill is carried out. Malyon Excavation Limited, of Cornwall, is reconstructing the road from Main Street to the north- ern town limits. Traffic in this area is being reduced to one lane during the work that is ex- pected to be wrapped up November 14. Champlain Township is carrying out the $2.3 million project with the help of a $2.1 million Ontario government sub- sidy.

The work will see the road widened to accommodate a new center left turning lane. The job also includes the replace- ment of the existing storm sewer, from Main Street to the Little Rideau Drain, the replacement of some sanitary sewer sections and a watermain. Sidewalks and curbs are being replaced while driveway culverts are being re- moved. Catch basins will be installed to ensure proper drainage at driveways. Some Hydro poles are being moved and new“School zone”signs with solar blink- ing lights are being installed.

Agency warns that it’s still too dry

The South Nation Conservation Water Response Team is asking residents, busi- nesses and industries throughout the wa- tershed to reduce their water consump- tion by 20 per cent. Water consumption can be reduced by limiting non-essential uses such as lawn watering and car wash- ing. Residents should contact their munic- ipalities regarding any local water or fire by-laws that may apply. T he South Nation Watershed remains in a Level 2 LowWater Condition. “A Level 2 Low Water Condition means a minor water supply problem has been de- tected,” says Sandra Mancini, SNC’s Direc- tor of Planning and Engineering. The recent warm and dry conditions have decreased the stream fl ows through- out the watershed to approximately 30 per cent of normal for this time of year. SNC’s Water Response Team, consist- ing of representatives from provincial and municipal governments, agriculture and other special interest groups , will meet next week to discuss implications of the low water conditions. Some dry wells have been reported by property owners to SNC thus far. Further,

due to low water levels, exposed rocks in watercourses pose an additional hazard during recreational activities. SNC will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will provide updates as re- quired. To assist in regional data collection of the situation, property owners, busi- nesses, and industries are encouraged to contact SNC if they are experiencing any unusual water-related problems. The renovated Place Mont-Roc will have sprinklers. “People can’t wait”

Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office investigators have said. About 85 people were forced to find alternate accommodations in the wake of the fire that claimed the lives of Marie- Anne Bonin, 84, and her husband, Jean-Paul Bonin, 87. While it is hard to predict how many residents will return to Place Mont- Roc, “We know that many of them can’t wait to return. On a daily basis, staff is asked when it is going to re-open,” says Delacourt. Repairs to the Spence Avenue facility, which employs 32, are expected to be completed by September or October. The cause of the tragedy may not be released until late next year. “We are in the same boat as everyone else,” says Delacourt, relating that the On- tario Fire Marshal’s Office has not told the owner the exact cause of the fire. In fact, a report on the incident may be available in six to ten months from now.

HAWKESBURY | Sprinklerswill be installed at Place Mont-Roc as the Hawkesbury re- tirement home undergoes renovations following a fatal fire two months ago. “Definitely, sprinklers are part of our plans,”says Paul Delacourt, managing direc- tor of Putnam Hall Retirement Residences, the Oakville-based company that owns the Spence Avenue facility where two people died in a May 25 blaze. Under Ontario law, the facility, which was built in the 1980s and passed a Hawkesbury Fire Depart- ment inspection in March, was not required to have a sprinkler system. It is not clear whether sprinklers would have saved the lives of the couple who died after the fire broke out on the third floor of the building,

Pendant ce temps, quatre des sept membres du conseil essayent d’assurer les citoyens que la municipalité est en- tre bonnes mains. « Comme v ous pou- vez le constater, nos comptes sont payés, les résolution s s on t approu vé es, l’admini s tration des s ubventions est en marche et le développement des dossiers, à l’intérieur des loi s , va bon train », selon un « Bulletin d’information » préparé par la mairesse suppléante, Diane Monette, et les conseillers Noël Baril, Alain Carrière et Pierre Lessard. Le bulletin souligne l’abîme entre les quatre membres et le maire et les con- seillers Teresa Foreman et Daniel Gauthier. Citant le conflit, M. Saywell a demandé au ministère des Affaires municipales du Québec de placer la municipalité sous tu- telle. Pendant ce temps, M. Saywell fait face à une action en justice visant sa démission. Ceci suit un vote de non-confiance contre le maire plus tôt cette année. De plus, le 12 juin, pendant que M. Saywell était hors du pays, le conseil a voté pour nommer Mme Monette comme le remplacement de M. Saywell sur le conseil de la MRC d’Argenteuil. M. Saywell a utilisé son veto pour rejeter ce mouvement. En même temps, le maire a porté un grief contre M. Baril, alléguant un conflit d’intérêts. Le maire a soutenu que M. Baril a un conflit parce qu’il est actionnaire dans la compag- nie Les Sources Véo, une entreprise où le conseiller est employé et qui a une entente avec la municipalité pour l’entretien d’une partie du chemin de la rivière Rouge. Par ailleurs, selon une opinion légale, M. Baril n’est pas en fait actionnaire, il y aurait peu de chance que la municipalité puisse dé- montrer une allégation de conflit devant les tribunaux. Mais le maire n’a pas accepté la conclu- sion, affirmant qu’elle est fondée sur les circonstances hypothétiques. « Le débat reste ouvert ». M. Baril soutient que le maire a gaspillé de l’argent des contribuables sur une ven- detta contre lui. Lemaire a cherché l’avis de l’étude légale de Dunton Mainville, de Laval, avant que les membres eurent exprimés l’opposition à la dépense. À la dernière réunion, le con- seil a refusé de payer la facture de 3788,43 $. M. Saywell avait dit que les frais légaux pour les dossiers municipaux ont atteint 85 770 $ jusqu’à présent.

All over the map, and other customs

“All over the map.” Soon that expression may have no relevance because the old-fashioned awkward paper road map is going the way of the rotary dial phone and the cassette player. Technology will eventually claim another fixture of the world as we you used to know it – the tourist information centre. As Prescott-Russell economic development director Sylvain Charlebois recently not- ed, tourists are using new ways to get information and many conventional kiosques are undergoing change. As the Ontario government closes centres across the province, the government facil- ity near Chute-à-Blondeau, west of the interprovincial border, is remaining open. But we can expect to see more and more office employees being replaced by mechanical guides. In some centres, people have been replaced by interactive touch screens. The Internet, smart phones and social media are reducing the frequency of real, live human interaction. So it only makes sense that we will rely more and more on electronics to get our directions. Sadly, with all those sophisticated devices available, it is becoming almost impossible to get lost, in the best possible sense of that term. Jail is one place you want to avoid. Thus, we pass on this seasonal message. Summertime is peak garage sale season. Are you thinking of selling that dusty old deer head, mounted fish or stuffed bird? Maybe you are considering putting a turtle or baby skunk up for sale on an Internet classified website. Better think twice. In most cases, members of the public need a licence or permit to harvest and possess or to offer to buy or sell fish and wildlife in Ontario. This includes animals both living and long dead, and even their parts. (Gross!) The purchase or sale of Ontario’s fish and wildlife including angler-caught fish, taxi- dermy mounts, skulls, meat, bones, antlers or live wildlife including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects is, inmany cases, unlawful and could result in serious penalties. The Ministry of Natural Resources enforces laws related to the illegal trade in fish and wildlife. The Fish andWildlife Conservation Act provides for penalties of up to $100,000 and two years in jail for persons convicted of these types of offences. Even heftier fines of up to $250,000 and a year in jail for one offence, or $500,000 and a year in jail for a second or subsequent offence, are possible under the Endangered Species Act If you don’t want a run-in with the law, stick to clothes, books, furniture and other household items for your garage sale. Trying to sell Ontario wildlife, either live or dead, could prove to be very costly. What can you do if you see others engaging in illegal fish and wildlife trafficking, whether on the web or in the wild? Report natural resources violations by calling 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free anytime or contacting your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime stoppers anonymously at 1-800- 222-TIPS (8477). Now that you know what to avoid at garage sales, you may want to add ancient road maps to your yard sale shopping list. Of course, valuable antique maps, atlases and directories, are hard to find at your average garage sale. But, hey, life is all about the hunt not the prize, right? No doubt you can download an app to help in your search for old documents. We should also not forget that too much information is not healthy, either. If you overload on safe travel techniques, and tourist horror stories, you may become so paranoid that you will never leave home. Granted, if you are a stranger visiting a strange land, a degree of caution is advisable. Ignorance is bliss; it can also be deadly. There are some parts of the world that are dan- gerous, for everyone, all the time. Gizmos such as GPS are particularly useful for the directionally challenged, the type of people who drive the wrong way on one-way streets, who can get lost in the tiniest village, who innocently enter parking lots where a stern security guard barks, “How did you get in here? This is a classified area!” But, seriously, what is more interesting? Getting lost or arriving at a destination inci- dent-free? When you are travelling, you obviously need some sort of plan or agenda, to ensure your itinerary takes in the must-see sites. However, serendipity and spontaneity are good, too. Often the best way to appreciate the“local flavour”is to steer clear of the organized tours and tourist traps, and encounter the locals, where they live, work and play. The best travel memories are those unexpected, impromptu moments, when you opted to amble down a quite side street and steered clear of the crowded boulevards. Of course, in our daily lives, we could not adopt such a carefree, head-in-the-clouds attitude. We must be driven, we must remain fixed on clear and quantifiable objectives at all times. Besides, you need time to meander aimlessly, and nobody has time these days. Anyway, when you are planning your next vacation, pencil in “Get lost” on the list of things to do. Sometimes it is fine to be disoriented, and veer off onto a path that is less taken. If you are lucky, that road may lead to a quaint info booth, because an interactive touch screen will never replace the warm, sunny face of an eager summer employee who is just waiting to tell you where to go.
