Welcome message

Jul 2023.

July 2023

Dragi putnici,

Dear passengers,

Uživajte u letu i srećan put.

IF THE MONTH OF JULY WERE TO BE RENAMED, IT SEEMS THAT “DOLCE VITA” WOULD BE THE BEST CHOICE . Du- ring this month that’s bathed in sunlight, the sound of wa- ves grows louder, enhancing the mood for travel even mo- re. It’s also no wonder that the bikini was first introduced to the world in July, back in 1946. Once marking a revolution in fashion, it is now an essential item in every suitcase on our flights to Greece, Turkey, Spain, Bulgaria, Egypt, Croatia and Montenegro. The bikini and the sea are inseparable, just like July and summer. With an awareness that the needs of passengers are growing year on year, we strive to continuously improve the network of destinations that we offer. And we have launched direct services to over 20 new cities since the beginning of this summer season. We will be flying throughout the ye- ar from Chicago in the west to Tianjin in the east, from Got- henburg in the north to Malta in the south. We currently fly to more than 80 destinations, with our fleet of more than 20 comfortable aircraft and an expanded cabin crew team. You are with us on all those flights. Thanks to that, we ha- ve been breaking our own records in terms of numbers of pa- ssengers carried and flights operated since July 2022, and so far in 2023 we’ve already transported over 1.5 million passen- gers. These good results bring us joy and inspire us to be even better. In a way, we are also obliged by our 96-year tradition, which we celebrated again this 17 th June. It was on that same date, back in 1927, that the country’s original national airline, Aeroput, of which we are the successor, was incorporated. Building on our past successes, we look to the future. We are planning new destinations, the upcoming winter season and the further expansion of our fleet. We plan to support yo- ur plans and journeys. The time you spend aboard the plane is perfect for planning, and the magazine you now hold in yo- ur hands will provide you with many great ideas, while Air Ser- bia will support you in bringing them to fruition. As you make your way to your favourite summer destination, you should also plan your autumn journey. Enjoy your flight and have a good trip.

OD POČETKA GODINE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR

MILION I PO PUTNIKA NA LETOVIMA ER SRBIJE 1.5 MILLION PASSENGERS ON AIR SERBIA’S FLIGHTS

Do 18. juna, u redovnom i čarter-saobraćaju, nacionalna avio-kompanija prevezla je milion i po putnika i oborila još jedan sopstveni rekord / The Serbian national airline had carried 1.5 million passengers on scheduled and charter flights this year by 18 th June, thus breaking another of its records

U PRETPANDEMIJSKOJ 2019.

IN THE PREPANDEMIC YEAR OF 2019, the national air- line had carried the same number of passengers by 5 b Au- gust, while in 2022 the same result was only achieved on 13 th August. This is thus the first year since it began opera- ting under the Air Serbia name that the airline has carried 1.5 million passengers by June, or two months earlier than in its previous best business year. “Passengers recognise our desire to continuously expand the network of destinations we fly to and to impro- ve the quality of service. Thanks to the trust they place in us every day, we are achieving record results month after month in terms of the number of flights and passengers carried. At the very beginning of 2023, we set a clear go- al and created a strategy that should enable us to achieve what we planned. We want to carry more than three and a half million passengers this year, and if we continue wi- th such good monthly results, I believe we will achieve that goal,” says Air Serbia CEO Jiri Marek. When it comes to the total number of passengers carried annually, the Serbian flag carrier’s flights carried 2.81 million passengers in 2019, while in 2022 it transpor- ted 2.76 million passengers. During this year, the natio- nal airline had already carried its millionth passenger by 8 th May, despite having last year only achieved this same re- sult on 8 th July, or two months later. Air Serbia operates flights to over 80 destinations worldwide. In addition to its main Belgrade Nikola Tesla Air- port hub, passengers can also fly to their destinations from Niš Constantine the Great Airport and Morava International Airport near Kraljevo.

Želimo da u ovoj godini prevezemo više od tri i po miliona putnika, kaže Jirži Marek, generalni direktor Er Srbije We want to carry more than three and a half million passengers this year, says Air Serbia CEO Jiri Marek

ZAŠTO VOLITE AVIONE?

WHY DO YOU LIKE PLANES?

Volim to uzbuđenje pred poletanje I love that excitement prior to take-off

SVAKI JE LET LEP I POSEBAN ZA SE BE. Kažem svaki, jer volim i avione i aerodro- me i putovanja.

“EVERY FLIGHT IS BEAUTIFUL AND SPECIAL IN AND OF ITSELF . I say every flight, because I love aeroplanes and airports and travelling. I enjoy that sense of slight ex- citement prior to take-off, because I know that I’m thus already closer to my destination. I have two flights ahead of me in the next month and I can admit to you that I’m already looking for- ward to them happily. It is interesting that, on

WHO IS IVAN? Prior to demonstrating his talent for acting, he trained ju- do in his hometown of Zrenjanin, and it was this

sport that inspired fellow actor Viktor Savić to give him his nickname [Džudi/Judy]. He won the Zoranov Brk Award for his por- trayal of the character of Don Juan in the play of the same name. He has shared scenes with many great actors, includ- ing the likes of Ralph Fiennes, and be- fore flying off for his well-deserved summer break this year, he conclud- ed shooting for the film Tavern in the Balkans, the premiere of which has been scheduled for 3 rd November. He is awaited by new characters from September onwards, amongst which he is especially looking for- ward to the series Son’s Will.

almost every flight, I fall asleep about ten minutes before we land at the airport. But I manage to sleep at least a little because I don’t leap from my seat immediately. Just enough until the other passengers exit the plane, so I’m often the last to disembark.” What do you always carry with you aboard a plane? “An obligatory item are headphones, be- cause I always listen to music during flights, most commonly soul and funk rhythms to re- lax me, particularly if it’s a longer flight. If the flight is shorter, I spend the time chatting with a fellow traveller.”

Beautiful Chania, the Queen of Crete

Crete has always been that distant, faraway island, with its shores lapped by the Medi- terranean on all sides, halfway between Malta and Cyprus, so- mewhere between Athens and Alexandria. It always tops the list of desired summer desti- nations, a place that you sim- ply must visit sooner or later. This cradle of the Minoan civili- sation, with its legacy of the Ve- netian and Ottoman empires, the home of the Greek Zorba... Even the Greeks consider Crete as being the island that is “per- haps the most beautiful”, and it is so large that you will find a beach for everyone, though you won’t really be able to spend your summer holiday at both ends of the island. The only thing is that Crete is no longer a distant, faraway de- stination, as it recently beca- me available via an Air Serbia flight lasting less than two ho- urs. If you are heading to the west of the island, choose Cha- nia, while you can also fly a little further north and east to Hera-

klion. Both cities now have di- rect connections with Belgra- de, but for this trip, marking our first encounter with this beauty of the Mediterranean, we chose the island’s queen, as Chania is often dubbed... First meeting in the “Garden” Greece is undeniably beautiful in myriad ways, but it is certain- ly the Greek people that make it special. Charming, forthright, attentive yet unobtrusive, the- re for you if you need them, but also ready to make themselves scarce. These characteristics also describe the leaders of the city, who welcomed us in a very special place, Café Kipos, whi- ch means “garden” in Greek and is situated in the city’s munici- pal garden. This historic café has been operating for more than 150 years, making it one of the oldest in Europe, and over the decades it has served coffee to all the important peo- ple who’ve ever come here, te- stifying to which are numerous photos on the walls.

Continue heading along the Ve- netian harbour towards the old sea wall that was built to pro- tect the harbour from norther- ly waves. If you’re lucky, you might see young men and wo- men in authentic local costu- mes dancing traditional Cre- tan dances on that wall as the sun sinks into the sea. Festivals are an everyday occurrence he- re and you’re bound to catch at least some entertainment pro- gramme. Next you will amble past the Bastion of St. Nicholas of Molos, representing the bu- lwark that once protected the harbour against pirates, and he- ad all the way to the Egyptian li- ghthouse, which is a symbol of this vibrant city. At the end of your walk, the most difficult part might be choosing a re- staurant or café (there are really a lot) where you can unwind and watch the world go by un- der the sizzling Cretan sun. Where Venizelos guards the city You will, of course, constantly return to the Old Town, becau- se that’s where the best fun is to be found, but don’t be too id- le to make the effort to clamber up to the top of the hills of Akro-

mnogo. Na kraju, i ne morate mno - go daleko od Hanje. ter, parasols, sunbeds, drinks, and everything else you need to spend an unforgettable day here. If you don’t want to travel the 60 kilometres required to get there, you will find the wild landscape of Sheitan [Satan] Ports just 22 km from Chania. Located there are three narrow inlets that are well protected against the waves. Or are they? This natural beauty spot earned its devilish name because the narrow passage through the rocks seems gentle and calm, but the sudden and unexpe- cted wind has been known to smash ships against those sa- me rocks. That’s why the Otto- mans who discovered these bays named the place after Sa- tan himself, Satanas, as the Greeks call this place, or as we Serbs would say, after the black devil. But the only thing we saw here was devilishly beautiful na- ture and the cleanest deep sea. You can only reach this bea- ch by car, and only as far as the carpark – after which you ha- ve to descend the steep path on foot – or, if you’re as fortu- nate as we were, by boat. We dropped anchor, leapt from the deck and had the best possi- ble time swimming in the cle- ar waters. If you have time, head to Sta- vros Beach, which is just 15 ki- lometres from Chania. The na- me probably doesn't mean much to you right now, but that might change if we tell you that it was there that the sirtaki dan- ce was performed for the first time! It was way back in 1964 that Anthony Quinn was given this dance to perform, on the sand of Stavros Beach, to the famous music of Mikis Theo- dorakis. Sirtaki was celebrated after the film Zorba the Greek won three Oscars, and many believe it is a traditional Greek dance, though it was actually created for the needs of the film. However, the dance and

tiri for an unforgettable panora- mic view of the whole of Chania and the endless blue of the sea of the Cretan coast. The park here is stunningly beautiful and somewhat reminiscent of Bel- grade’s Avala, if you exclude the palm trees and oleander shru- bs, and in this important pla- ce you can also pay your respe- cts to Eleftherios Venizelos, the most renowned Cretan, who de- termined the developmental di- rection of the Greek state and paved the way for modern de- mocracy, and whose tomb is lo- cated there. The memorial sta- tue of Spyros Kagiales, the hero of the 1897 rebellion, who bra- vely used his body to replace a broken flagpole and ensure the Greek flag remained aloft, will remind you of the slogan “free- dom or death” which is a slightly different version of the slogan we remember in Serbia: ‘better the grave than a slave’. Big blue and sirtaki And now the time has come to head towards the main rea- son we came here: the turquo- ise waters of the Mediterra- nean and some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches. And the choice is seemingly end- less – depending only on how far you want to go and what you need. We only paddled in a few places, but that was qu- ite enough for us to want you to swim here yourself. For star- ters there’s Phalasarna, which has been declared one of Euro- pe’s best beaches and among the most beautiful in the world. Soft, white sand, turquoise wa-

Diznijeva „Fantazija“ KONCERT

Disney’s Fantasia CONCERT

All those who loved previous Philharmonic picnics, and particularly those fans who’ve been eagerly awaiting the performance of Disney’s famous Fantasia, will now have an opportunity to attend the biggest music picnic to date, which will bring together an audience comprising all generations for a huge open-air concert that’s free to attend. This “live-to-film” concert will be the first time a licensed Disney music and film spectacle has been performed in our region. The Belgrade Philhar- monic has received the right to present and perform this sensational pro- duction – representing a high-quality projection that’s a compilation of the original 1940 Fantasia film and Fantasia 2000, which has never been of- ficially screened in our region. Scenes from both of these iconic films will be projected in high resolution on a large screen positioned above the or- chestra, which will perform excerpts from Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, Respighi’s The Pines of Rome, Paul Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and many other compositions. Under the leadership of chief conductor Gabriel Feltz, the Belgrade Philhar- monic will perform Disney’s Fantasia at Ušće (in New Belgrade’s Block 13) on 2 nd July from 8:30pm. This concert also marks the launch of celebrations commemorating the centenary of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Past in The Present IZLOŽBA EXHIBITION

Izložba „The Past in The Present“ biće otvorena do 17. septembra 2023, a kako nalaže praksa Galerije „Hestia“, imaće i svoje prateće programe.

The exhibition entitled The Past in The Present intertwines the works of two artists who belong to the kindred civilisational and religious circles of Greece and Serbia, though they both differ not only in terms of the perspective from which they approach themes, but also in the fact that they deal with different types of photography. What nonetheless connects them is their interest in tradition, the result of which is long-term research projects. The Ethos and Mitos projects of Greek photographer Michalis Pappas bring photographs focused on Greece’s folklore tradition, on folk rituals, religious customs and folk costumes from various regions of the country. Unlike Pappas’s theatrical photography - with its bright colour palette and almost Dionysian characteristics, in which people represent the main pro- tagonists – Mihailo Vasiljević, in his Serbian Mythology project, approach- es Serbian mythology and tradition from a completely different perspec- tive. Despite the fact that his works are also created through his travels to specific destinations within Serbia and that they also deal with a combi- nation of rituals with pagan and Christian origins, his photographs have a much softer colour palette and feature everyday items, landscapes and natural phenomena, while they do not accentuate décor and staging. The Past in The Present exhibition runs until 17 th September 2023 and will also have its own ancillary programmes, as is the common practice of Hestia Gallery.

Umiruju me i do- nose utehu.
