A POLISH CHRISTMAS EVE ‹NEW› Christmas is significant for Poles around the world. Called ‘wigilia’ and pronounced vee-geel-yah, it is celebrated in the evening of 24 December. Wigilia means ‘waiting’ for the birth of Christ. As many family members as possible are present and guests and strangers are welcomed. No meat is eaten and in the past the feast was a huge affair of 12 dishes, in honour of the 12 apostles. Today it is a slightly more modest affair. Class participants will participate in the traditional Christmas greeting of sharing oplatek, followed by Christmas Eve beetroot broth with uszka (tiny mushroom pierogi), a celebratory fish dish and finally traditional Polish cake and sweets. There may be wodka! A session not to be missed. Lusia Guthrie & Basia Samcewicz 47091 Mon., 6pm 25 November, 1 sess x 3 hrs FEE: $139, No disc. or conc. WEA CENTRE

FOOD & WINE OF PUGLIA WITH ROSA & DAVID Join SA food identity Rosa Matto and WEA’s wine tutor, David Crossman for this entertaining and delicious trip to Puglia, Italy where you will get to sample many dishes paired with delicious wines. The food of Puglia is known as a prime example of cucina povera or ‘cuisine of the poor’, a description of its simplicity rather than its quality. Indeed, the simple dishes, mostly based on grains, vegetables and fish from the coastline, allow the quality of Puglia’s local and seasonal ingredients to take centre stage. Enjoy the white wine, Fiano, with its floral, tropical, pear and honey flavours. Be impressed by the deep colour and intense flavour of the local red wine Primitivo. Another local red to try is Negroamaro, with its dark berry fruit and spicy tones, accompanied by slightly medicinal characters. 47060 Sat., 11am 9 November, 1 sess x 3 hrs FEE: $159, No disc. or conc.
