Les adver- saires politiques du maire en poste, Claude Levac, sont au nombre de trois à Casselman. L’ancien maire adjoint Daniel La$eur, l’ancien maire Conrad Lamandeleine, et la conseillère Francyn LeBlanc, ten- teront de lui ravir le poste de ma- gistrat. Les conseillers ne laissent pas non plus leur place dans cette course politique puisqu’ils sont sept à vouloir occuper l’un des quatre postes de conseillers.. Les conseillers sortants, Michel Desjar- dins et Marcel Cléroux, tenteront de se faire réélire. Le conseiller sor- tant, Mario Laplante, a décidé de ne pas solliciter un nouveau mandat. Les autres candidats sont Tanya Bériault, Anik Charron, Raymond Levac, Karine Millette et Denis Re- naud. Nine candidates will be trying to win one of four councillor posi- tions in the October 27 municipal elections in the Township of Rus- sell. In addition to incumbents Pierre Leroux and Jamie Laurin, other candidates in the race are Cindy Saucier and Ron Barr from Russell, André Brisson, Amanda Simard, Raymond St-Pierre and Patrick Thibodeau from Embrun. Éric Bazinet, will not be seeking a second term while Calvin Pol, who had replaced Craig Cullen ear- lier this year, will not be running. Incumbent mayor Jean-Paul St. Pierre will also be facing compe- tition as former councillor Donald St-Pierre, a distant cousin, is also running for the top position. EMBRUN | Deux accidents de voiture se sont produits le jeudi 18 septembre derni- er sur la route 500. Le premier accident s’est produit le matin. Une camionnette circulant sur la route 500 ouest, entre Casselman et Embrun, à la hau- teur de la montée Lebrun, est entrée en col- lision avec un autobus scolaire. L’autobus, qui s’était arrêté pour faire monter un élève, a été violemment heurté à l’arrière par la ca- mionnette qui a freiné brusquement mais qui n’a pu éviter l’autobus. La camionnette a subi d’importants dom- mages contrairement à l’autobus scolaire. Les étudiants à bord n’ont subi aucun trau- matisme mais une ambulance a été appelée sur les lieux de l’accident. Un seul étudiant, qui se plaignait de maux de dos et de cou, a été transporté au Centre hospitalier pour enfants d’Ottawa (CHEO) pour véri!cation. Aucune charge n’a été portée contre le conducteur de la camion- nette. They are memorial tributes in honour of Russell Raiders Mark Holland and Stephan Carignan, who both passed away in mid-September. Carignan, 52, played on the club’s Old- Timers Division 3 squad. He died Sunday, Sept. 14, after a long battle against prostate cancer. A die-hard kicker to the end, Cari- gnan kept on playing his beloved game, taking to the !eld for several matches even while he was undergoing his cancer treat- ments. If we do not meet these targets, there will be signi!cant tax implica- tions to current residents.” Regarding the township’s debt and taxes, he says approximately 95 per cent of the debt is due to the Ottawa water project which is scheduled to be paid by user fees over 30 years. “The remaining debt is re- viewed each year during budget sessions in an e"ort to reduce the payback period… I have always strived to keep tax increases to a bare minimum.” Laurin also commented a disputed Town- ship plan to have business owners in the Vars Industrial Park pay for a new water line Laurin. “We are currently working on a re- vised plan to bring services to the industrial park based on consultations with business owners. Due to the signi!cant cost of the project we need to ensure that all stakehol- ders’ interests are taken into consideration.” His motivation for seeking another term is to provide a voice for residents. “Council needs to be transparent and fair and I’ve stood by this belief by voting against all sole-sourced contracts awarded... I believe it is a poor practice by the township and has to stop. Approximately $7 million dol- lars for two projects were contracted to one company, without going to tender, which is unacceptable.” Laurin has volunteered locally for many years, including the Terry Fox Run, Pout- masters Derby, Lions’ Club, Ecole St-Joseph Parents’ Council, and coaching minor hoc- key and football. At work he co-chairs the Aboriginal Employee Resource Group. He supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and was the 2012 family co- chair for the Ottawa Telus Walk to Cure Dia- betes. RUSSELL | Incumbent Jamie Laurin is seek- ing a third term on Russell Council in the municipal election being held at the end of October. Laurin moved to Russell in 2001. “My wife and I immediately fell in love with the com- munity because of the strong family sur- roundings and down-to-earth neighbours,” he says, adding, “Our move to Russell was the best decision we ever made.”The couple has three children. During his two terms as councillor, he chaired the Recreation Advisory Commit- tee, Environmental Advisory Committee, Accessibility Advisory Committee and the Planning Advisory Committee. He sat on the Library Board, Russell Watch, Russell Historical Society and the Marionville Ci- tizens’ Committee. He lists his top priorities as commercial growth, improved taxation, industrial ex- pansion and the development of a recrea- tion complex strategy. La pièce donne lieu à de belles scènes très comiques. Entre les scènes, les élèves de l’école danseront et joueront de la musique. A pickup truck arrived and, after talking to Gabriel Franche, the driver, police tested him with the roadside screening de- vice. Boat theft A pair of stolen kayaks are $oating around Prescott-Russell. Police received a call Sept. 16 from a resident on Briere Road in St- Albert about two kayaks and some !shing gear stolen from his seasonal property. Pennyante thief Police have a burglary case where the thief may have been scrabbling around a bit to !nd some actual cash to take away. Const. Jason Cholette answered a day- time break-and-enter call Sept. 15 from a home on County Road 8 in The Nation Mu- nicipality. The burglar got in through a basement window and left with a Zildjian-brand CD case containing about four dozen CDs, a Dewalt electric drill with a case and three batteries, and a small quantity of cash in the form of a plastic bag with $30 worth of quarters, a small jar with about $30 worth of loonies and toonies, and a large jar full of Canadian Olympic commemorative quar- ters, totaling about $100. Bail violation A Limoges man is charged with breaking his bail condition after police answered a domestic disturbance call Sept. 16. The complainant was outside her home when she noticed the accused walking in front of her house. The OPP report states that he then stopped and began harassing and threatening her. She went inside and called the police who then arrived and ar- rested the man. His name was not revealed. He is charged with failure to comply with the conditions of a police order. L’Embrunoise Pascale Ménard, qui fait partie des Enfants amputés depuis l’âge de quatre ans, a fait des études en environne- ment et en géographie à l’Université d’Ot- tawa, et espère bien évoluer dans sa sphère. «C’est mon but, j’ai étudié là-dedans, j’ai fait mon bac, mais je n’ai pas été capable de rentrer dans le domaine encore. Je souhaite vraiment travailler dans ce que j’aime», a-t- elle lancé. Pendant ce temps, elle donnera de son temps pour les Amputés dont elle connaît toute l’histoire. Très engagée, elle fait partie du conseil junior de cette grande fraternité. «C’est à mon tour d’apporter mon aide aux plus jeunes, comme les plus vieux avaient fait avec moi», a-t-elle conclu, tout sourire. Plusieurs autres jeunes, les Vainqueurs comme on les surnomme, provenant également de partout au Cana- da, se sont joints à eux pour participer au Séminaire sur les amputations multiples 2014 qui se tenait le week-end dernier au Centre de conférence d’Ottawa. Pascale Ménard, 23 ans, d’Embrun, fait partie de ces jeunes qui ont été amputés ou qui sont nés avec un syndrome. Elle a été présente tout au long du week-end du 20 septembre pour parler avec les plus jeunes. Pascale est née avec le syndrome de Tar, dé- couvert pour la première fois en 1959 et qui associe une thrombopénie et une absence de radius dans ses deux bras. Ce syndrome est très rare.
