Heat and transport electrification could create 5,000NI jobs

A new report suggests that the electrification of Northern Ireland’s heating and transport systems could create up to 5,000 jobs and cut emissions by 82%. The KPMG study, commissioned by NIE Networks, said electrification could be transformative for the economy, reducing the spend on imported fossil fuels by around £1.4 billion a year. It comes as Stormont prepares to publish a new energy strategy toward the end of this year. Industry insiders expect the Executive to set a new target of sourcing 70% of electricity

from renewables by 2030. But KPMG’s new research claims that wider electrification has the potential to act as a catalyst for massive economic growth. The report puts the cost of change at £9.6bn over the next two decades, including £4bn for renewables, but it could inject £18.8bn GVA (gross value added) into the economy. The report also states that heat pumps could significantly displace Northern Ireland’s reliance on oil and gas for home heating, reaching 375,000 premises by 2040, at a cost of £3.4bn.

Philip Ryan Area Sales Manager for LED Group/Robus presented Trade Electric Group’s Managing Director Fergal Costelloe with a memento to mark TEG’s 50th year in business. FireBox – safe in the event of a fire In the event of a fire, every minute is important so that the fire services can save the most important thing – human lives. For this, it is necessary that certain

functions retain their ability to work in the event of a fire, the so-called functional preservation. This applies to emergency lighting or other safety- relevant systems. The FireBox is designed for the separate requirements in fire protection, it is halogen-free and has a high-temperature-resistant ceramic connection unit inside. Together with the supplied screw anchors, the FireBox is approved for mounting on concrete, masonry, sand-lime brick and standard brickwork and tested for electrical functional maintenance in accordance with DIN 4102 Part 12, functional maintenance classes E30 to E90. As part of the functional maintenance system, the FireBox thus ensures that safety-relevant systems function reliably over a defined period in the event of a fire. All FireBoxes have protection class IP66. Switch toEVs faces uphill battle in Ireland

Just half of Irish motorists expect to be driving electric vehicles by 2030 despite it being the proposed cut-off point for the sale of fossil fuel engines, new research has found. The data flags growing concerns that Government green policy needs to be pushed harder to change consumer habits and help drive down carbon dioxide emissions. It also found that less than a third of people believed the target of one million electric vehicles on the road by 2030 was actually achievable. The research, conducted among 1,000 respondents on behalf of forecourt retailer Circle K, came just before a Government report outlining its strategy to have 936,000 EVs on Irish roads by the end of the decade, highlighting a gulf between public confidence and State policy.

Worse still in relation to the Government’s record on promoting sustainable transport is that only 17% of respondents feel enough effort is being made to incentivise the purchase of electric vehicles. One in three remains unaware that an electric vehicle grant scheme even exists.

EU CHANGES

NEW EU ENERGY LABELS CAME INTO EFFECT AT THE START OF SEPTEMBER - IRISH LIGHTING COMPANY SOLUS OUTLINES WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW… NewEUenergy labels –what is changing?

A brand-new version of the widely recognised EU energy label for light bulbs and light sources became applicable in all Irish shops and online retailers from September 1, with an 18-month transition period for products already on the market. Solus, one of Ireland’s leading lighting manufacturers, hosted a webinar earlier this year presented by broadcaster Jonathan Healy with a panel of experts from government and compliance bodies including Minister Pippa Hackett, SEAI Programme Manager Tim Stokes and Elizabeth O’Reilly, Environmental Compliance & Membership Manager for WEEE Ireland. The webinar aimed to bring clarity to what this new legislation entails, what timelines are in place and how the industry and its retailers can be compliant. According to the panel, the most important change is a return to a simple A-G scale on energy labels. This has been done because more and more products are now achieving ratings as A, A+ or A++ according to the current scale, causing confusion for consumers. The new energy label will leave empty energy efficiency classes at the top of the scale for advancing technologies and to encourage manufacturers to develop more energy efficient products. SEAI Programme Manager Tim Stokes said, “The energy labelling regulation

for light sources and its sister regulation relating to eco-design will have an estimated combined energy saving of 42 terawatt hours per annum by 2030.” QR codes A further significant change is the introduction of a QR code. By scanning the QR-code, consumers can find

year in 2019 and 38,000 tonnes of electrical waste was taken back from landfill for use in manufacturing again.” The extensive new EU regulations are the result of nearly five years of negotiations and it will be mandatory for all manufacturers and retailers to comply. The new rules consist of the Single Lighting Regulation (SLR) and the Energy Labelling Regulation (ELR). “We are in a time of transition to tackle climate change and create a new green economy. It is important that this change happens at a political level, at a corporate level and at a consumer level,” said Minister Pippa Hackett as she commended Solus on taking a proactive approach to sustainability and the new regulations. Solus welcomed these new regulations, which are in line with their Planet First sustainability programme. The new energy labels will give clarity on energy efficiency for consumers and also ensure that businesses continue to innovate. additional information about the product model. By law, all energy labelled products on the EU market have to be registered in a new EU-wide database - European Product Registry for Energy Labels (EPREL). Eco-design rules are mandatory for almost all lamps sold in the EU. From September 1, the existing rules will be repealed and replaced to include circular economy requirements. According to Elizabeth O Reilly from WEEE Ireland, “3.2 million light bulbs were recycled in Ireland in their last full recorded

SIEMENS CERBERUS PRO FIRE ALARM PRODUCTS OFFER COMPREHENSIVE PROTECTION AND PERFORMANCE… MaximumprotectionwithCerberus Pro

O ne of the major benefits of procuring fire alarm products from a single manufacturer is the assurance that everything works properly together. This ensures that the responsibility for any product issues is clear. In addition,

Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) The Cerberus PRO FDA241 offers exceptional performance where high sensitivity (Class A) detection is required. A common application for such detection is within data centres or where other high value assets are present. These devices allow for exceptionally fast detection (the unit can be programmed to detect with a sensitivity 100 times greater than a typical point type detector). ASD’s can also be used to replace point type detectors at standard sensitivity (Class C) where access for maintenance or discrete aesthetics is an issue. Flame Detection Some fires produce very little initial smoke and develop almost instantly into dangerous flaming fires. In such circumstances flame detection offers the fastest possible detection. The Cerberus PRO FDF241 is a triple channel Infra-Red flame detector that respond quickly to such fires while providing excellent false alarm free reliability. Hazardous Area Fire Detection (Ex) Areas liable to the build-up of dangerous dust and gases that could lead to explosion require hazardous area devices to be installed throughout. These devices must be approved to work in such environments without the possibility of providing an ignition source. The products are either completely sealed so that their internal components cannot be exposed to the explosive atmosphere or intrinsically safe so that they cannot provide sufficient energy for ignition. Cerberus PRO provides a full range of addressable detectors and call points for use in such environments.

Howard Wilson, Siemens, Sales Manager - Ireland.

EN54-13 approval ensures that system performance is tested and verified by a third party. The challenge is to find a system that meets all your applications. Siemens Cerberus PRO offers this capability being a fully approved system and providing a comprehensive range of detection, alarming and control devices. The provision of suitable fire detection in different applications is particularly challenging and below we look a little deeper into special detection products and their applications. Linear (Beam Type) Smoke Detection Installation and maintenance of point type smoke detectors on high ceilings or in large open spaces can present problems of cost and accessibility. The Cerberus PRO FDL241 linear smoke detector can provide detection up to 100m in length. This product is loop powered and addressable, so no additional power supplies or interface modules are required. In addition, the FDL241 utilizes a reflector at the far end of the detected space so cabling is only required at one end.

R

SIMPRO EXPLAIN HOW TO MITIGATE RISK AND INCREASE REVENUE FOR YOUR BUSINESS WITH DATA-DRIVEN DECISION MAKING… How tomake data driven decisions in your electrical business

T here’s no shortage of data at your fingertips as a commercial electrical contracting business owner. Logged customer notes and calls, staff arrival and exit times, payment and invoicing records and inventory records are just some of the pieces of information you can gather from your business on a daily basis. All of this field service data tells a story of how efficiently you’re running daily operations and indicates your business’s overall health. However, having all of this data flowing through your business is one thing; knowing what to do with it is another. You need to not only be able to gather and analyse business data with the right processes and technology but also act on it quickly and so that you can make the right decisions for your business at the right time. Acting on your data is the key component of data driven decision making. What is data driven decision-making? Data driven decision making is especially important for electrical contracting businesses. It helps them mitigate risk, complete projects on time and on budget, and set KPIs to measure success, meet business goals, and scale as they take on larger projects. Curtis Thompson, simPRO Executive Director, explains: “With a solid data driven approach as opposed to running on a gut feeling, a business can look through the front windshield and see where they are going rather than looking through the rearview mirror and seeing what has already happened. “The sheer amount of data field service companies capture creates many opportunities for improvement including serving customers better and improving the bottom line.” Why should you take a data driven approach to decision making? Data gives you accurate insight into each specific area of your business. You

can use this data to pinpoint areas of your business that are doing well and compare them to underperforming areas. Most importantly, you can use this data to set attainable goals and KPIs for projects and wider business operations. Having these specific and measurable goals will support sustainable business growth. A data driven approach to decision making is critical when managing large, multi-phase projects. You can track task completion or cost to complete for each phase and then use it to inform how and when you assign tasks and materials out. This helps you complete work in each phase efficiently, stay on track and on budget and mitigate risk by ensuring profitability each step of the way. As a result, you can better manage overall

cash flow in your business by knowing where and why you gain and lose profit on each project. Start with reporting The right tools and processes for data driven decision making are also key. Start by looking at how you currently track, analyse, and act on your business data and discover where you can expand your reporting capabilities. For more information on reporting for your Electrical business download the free simPRO eBook: Business reporting for trade contractors in the digital age.

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT GREENTECH LEADS EXPANSION INTO IRELAND OF MYENERGI - THE AWARD-WINNING, AND FASTEST-SELLING MANUFACTURER OF EV CHARGERS AND ENERGY DIVERTERS... Electrical Equipment Greentech charges aheadwithmyenergi

E lectrical Equipment Greentech has become an official stockist of the highly desirable range of renewable energy products from myenergi, a company that has grown phenomenally since its foundation in the UK two years ago. With a large stock profile of the brand’s market-leading zappi range of EV chargers and eddi energy diverters held in their Belfast premises, Electrical Equipment Greentech is primed and ready to provide next-day delivery throughout the island of Ireland.

Commenting on the new product range, Ian Dornan, Sales Executive for Electrical Equipment Greentech said, “We are delighted to be partnered with myenergi. Their EV charging and energy diverter range sits perfectly alongside our existing renewables stock of solar PV and associated products. “The myenergi range gives us an opportunity to reach out to another market sector. With the Government’s ban on petrol and diesel cars coming into effect in 2030, we anticipate that the EV charger market is going to be huge for us going forward.” By August last year, there were more than 17,000 EVs on the road in Ireland, with a Government target in place to reach 936,000 by 2030. This target, which includes battery EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs, will be equivalent to one- third of the 2.8 million vehicles that are currently in use. Myenergi’s zappi is the world’s first solar-compatible EV charging device. With optional charging modes to either draw power from the grid, or utilise 100% of self-generated green energy, the pioneering system makes charging your car completely circular. A free supporting app allows users to utilise

economy charging tariffs, engage the boost system and monitor energy usage. The eddi power diverter from myenergi uses excess energy generated from domestic solar PV or wind generation systems. Rather than exporting it back to the grid, the intelligent eddi diverts it back into the user’s heating systems. Electrical Equipment Greentech is part of Edmundsons Group, one of the largest electrical wholesalers in the world with over 350 branches in the UK and Ireland, better known by its other trading names, Eastern Electrical and EWL in ROI. With such a powerful heritage, Electrical Equipment Greentech is the ideal choice of partner for myenergi in Ireland. Ian said, “We’ve taken plenty of stock on board as this is a very sought-after product in the car charging and energy diverter market. We’re also offering online virtual training to all of our customers to get them up to speed with this new product range. “We see this as a fantastic partnership going forward in Ireland.” If you have any questions or pricing enquiries about the myenergi products, call: +44 (0)28 9066 1177 or

CHARLOTTE BAMBER, SYSTEMS & COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR FOR SPARKSAFE, LOOKS BACK ON THE JOURNEY AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE LTP INITIATIVE… What we set out to achieve

S parkSafe Licence to quality and raise standards in the NI electrical contracting industry. With the help of responsible employers we Practise (LtP) has been developed to improve

has become established by policy and is well embedded into contract conditions for all the main public procurement organisations in Northern Ireland. What we have achieved

introduced the first electrical Licence to Practise system in the UK construction industry. The main factors driving the local LtP initiative included sub- economic tendering, alternative apprenticeship training schemes and the use of unskilled workers. Following a five-year consultation period with the local industry, we set out to develop a system that would - • Incentivise adult worker upskilling and stimulate Level 3 apprentice recruitment. • Provide independent assessment and authentication of worker identity and competency via an easy to use online system. • Improve existing trust-based gatekeeping arrangements against the use of cowboy and rogue operators. • Include a bespoke, compliance auditing service aimed at providing rigor and accountability. • Recover the reputation and value proposition of the industry. Where we are now As an independent Charitable trust, we have developed a unique online system that helps Clients reduce or remove the risks, which arise from using unqualified, underqualified and self-designated electrical workers. Client organisations are now equipped to exercise greater discernment regarding the quality, standard and composition of the electrical contractor’s workforce. The system

Charlotte Bamber, Systems & Compliance Director at SparkSafe.

The industry’s LtP initiative is the first of its kind in the UK. We have produced a system that connects the competency of individual electrical workers on a project by project basis by licence type. This appears in the form of a unique online Workforce Composition Report providing the Client with visibility, transparency and reporting tools that deter fraud and encourage improved contract performance. Building rigor and accountability into the system was a priority from the outset. With this in mind, our team developed a bespoke, independent auditing service. By using our compliance auditing service, Clients can evaluate how well the supply chain is adhering to the specified quality standards and conditions of contract. Positive Outcomes Until the introduction of the Licence to Practice system, most public sector procurement organisations lacked a reliable independent resource to verify the competencies of the electrical contractor’s workforce. SparkSafe LtP solves this problem. SparkSafe provides the Client with a smart, simple and easy to use means by which they can discern and positively discriminate in favour of qualified workers and employers who want to do the right thing, the right way. To date, 1400 projects have been registered on the SparkSafe system.

We can report that during the period, circa 75% of NI electrical workers have registered with SparkSafe. Our team has carried out more than 700 independent compliance audits which are aimed at preventing the supply chain from resourcing Client projects with unlicensed electrical workers. We have evidence of positive correlation between Licence to Practise audits and the pro-active steps taken by the supply chain towards improvement in the composition and qualifications of project workers. One key objective of SparkSafe’s Electrical Licence to Practise initiative was to raise the standards and improve the quality of the industry through accredited electrical qualifications. We can report that during the period 32% of restricted electrical workers have undertaken accredited training courses to become Q.E. licence holders. This achievement must be viewed as a valuable step towards improving the performance, productivity and perception of the local electrical industry.
