Grant has announced new dates for its popular heat pump and oil boiler courses at its on-site Training Academy in Birr, Co. Offally, and the addition of a brand-new course to its growing training portfolio. The oil burner course has been developed for technicians who are experienced working within the heating industry and looking to further their knowledge on domestic oil burners. It is the first course within the Grant Training Academy portfolio that will require a small payment to secure a space. However, those who sign up can feel assured that it will be money well spent as the course will cover all areas associated with domestic oil burners including: how they operate, the basics of combustion, how to use test equipment, how to test for faulty components, flue gas analysis, burner commissioning and more. Grant’s on-site training courses take place at the company’s state-of-the-art training facilities which opened at the start of last year and run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am – 4.00pm. Each course has been developed by Grant’s specialist training team to further educate those working in the heating trade throughout Ireland on the manufacturer’s range of innovative heating technologies. * Training courses will go ahead in line with the government’s Covid-19 guidelines and are subject to change if necessary. OFTEC lodged a complaint with the ASA over claims Firmus made in an advertisement that households who switch to natural gas from home heating oil emit 48% less Carbon Dioxide (CO2). The advert also contained a graphic that stated, “48% less carbon emissions than oil.” OFTEC proved, using Government-approved data that the difference is only 29.5% and not 48% as claimed by Firmus. Upon investigation by the ASA, it became apparent that Firmus had not used a like-for-like comparison between oil and gas but had compared a modern gas boiler with an old, inefficient oil boiler. The ASA told gas supplier Firmus Energy it must

Firmus has now agreed to remove the claim and has undertaken to seek copy advice on future claims they make with the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP). TALKSONNI PLUMBING TRAINEESHIP
Serious concerns about training in the plumbing and heating sector in Northern Ireland will continue to be addressed after a high-level Ministerial meeting in the Legislative Assembly in October attended by the Scotland and Northern Ireland Joint Industry Board (SNIJIB) and other industry bodies. The industry has raised strong objections that the Department for the Economy (DfE) in Northern Ireland intends to go ahead this autumn with plans for a two-year traineeship which, it is feared, will create first-class and second-class qualifications which will be detrimental to safety, skills and quality. However, after discussions between Gordon Lyons, Minister of the Economy, and his team and SNIJIB, the Electrical Contractors’ Association, Unite the Union, the Scottish and Northern Ireland Joint Industry Board
Stephanie Lowe, Secretary of the SNIJIB and Industrial Relations Manager for SNIPEF and Fiona Hodgson, CEO at SNIPEF.
and the Joint Industry Board, it was agreed to hold a further meeting. Stephanie Lowe, Secretary of the SNIJIB and Industrial Relations Manager for SNIPEF, said it was “a positive development” and a “step in the right direction.” Fiona Hodgson, Chief Executive of SNIPEF, added, “SNIPEF wants to support young people on their pathway into the industry, but they must be properly trained and qualified in the interests of safety and the maintenance of skill levels.” For further information, visit www.snipef.org

AS HOME HEATING REQUIREMENTS CONTINUE TO CHANGE, GRANT ENSURES ITS HEATING TECHNOLOGIES ARE RENEWABLE… Grant embracesmove to fully renewable heating technologymanufacturer
F ollowing the recent company announcement that the award-winning Grant Vortex boiler range is now able to run using 100% biofuel known as HVO, the manufacturer has largely transformed into a fully renewable heating company. This is reflected through its diverse product portfolio which includes, ranges of biofuel ready condensing boilers, condensing wood pellet boilers, solar thermal panels, underfloor heating, hot water cylinders, aluminium radiators, and air to water air source heat pumps. “As a company we remain committed to helping those working on new build and upgrade projects throughout
Ireland to reduce their carbon footprint and prepare homes for the future,” said Grant founder, Stephen Grant. He continued, “The Grant R&D team is dedicated to continuing its research of alternative synthetic liquid fuels and biofuels and welcomes any potential partnerships which could further the development of innovative renewable heating technologies. in homes, which include the biofuel compatible Grant Vortex condensing boiler and the A+++ Aerona 3 R32 air-to- water air source heat pump ranges. Air-to-water heat pumps like the Grant Aerona 3 models are a perfect solution for new builds as the minimised heat loss of these homes perfectly matches this medium temperature technology. Retrofits can be more difficult because the layout, construction, and existing heating design of older buildings traditionally incorporated high temperature heating systems. For an older building to become heat pump ready it’s essential that upgrades are made to the building fabric and air tightness before the heat pump installation takes place. Grant’s A+++ Aerona 3 R32 air-to-water air source heat pump continues to be a popular choice amongst plumbers and installers throughout the UK and Ireland due to its cleaner, more environmentally friendly performance and its ability to lower a property’s overall carbon footprint. Available in four outputs, the
Grant Aerona 3 R32 13kW and 17kW models have also been recognised by Quiet Mark for their quiet operation. For those upgrading a heating system, a Grant Vortex boiler provides a cost- effective option, which can also prepare the property for its changing heating needs. The Grant Vortex range is available in 63 different types with outputs from 12–70kW and has been developed in a series of models to ensure optimum installation in all ranges of properties. Vortex models include utility, external, boiler house and wall-hung. Grant’s recent R&D breakthrough has future-proofed the full Vortex range to use HVO through making a slight modification to the boiler, such as adapting the size of the fuel injector nozzle, fuel pump pressure and blast tube. Older Grant condensing boilers can also now be adapted to HVO - this may require a new biofuel burner that is matched with the specific boiler. Those working on new build or heating upgrade projects can now feel reassured that when they choose Grant they will

THERMOPARTS COMPANY PROFILE
Excellent customer service is key at Thermoparts.
GROWTH He never did go back out full time and instead concentrated on in-house sales, contacting contractors that were working on major projects across the island of Ireland. This proved to be a highly successful strategy for Thermoparts. “We started off supplying the mechanical materials for Google Laboratories, then it just grew” explains Glenn. Projects included Failte Ireland in limerick, pharmaceutical companies, the new Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, St. James Hospital and major data centres across Europe. Glenn was briefly enticed back on the road to supply all the mechanical systems for the Titanic Hotel in Belfast. “I got up at 5am in the morning, drove up to Belfast, dropped the materials on site and was back in Dublin by 9.30 – 10pm. You do what you have to do” he says. With this type of work ethic and commitment to customer service, its little wonder Thermoparts’ reputation grew; and so, did the orders. The company moved to larger premises in the same business park in 2018, and the following year reported its highest turnover to date.

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY Despite facing a 50% loss in business sales last year due to the Covid pandemic, Managing Director Glenn comments that Thermoparts have “been lucky!” “We were essential service providers for HSE supplying materials for Covid-19 works and that kept us going. “After the first six months of our current financial year we’re almost on a par with 2019, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we surpass the figure by the end of the year. “I think we’ve been very, very lucky” Glenn adds. “We’ve all got families and have lost people, so I’m very mindful of the fact that here we are celebrating 10 years, and yet we’re coming out of a truly horrendous time for our community and the world as a whole.” Brexit and the current materials shortage are a challenge, but Glenn remains positive. “Everybody has to sharpen their pencil to try and be competitive with their rates right now. But there definitely is light at the end of the tunnel. I am an eternal optimist!”
house training to date with the latest developments in plumbing and heating technologies, staff at Thermoparts are on hand to advise customers and source the best plumbing and heating products for their needs. Glenn adds: “Our clientele is so varied that we do everything from renewable energy products to basic compression fittings and bathroom suites”. “We’re a heating and plumbing merchant but we are also a procurement company and pride ourselves on our resourcefulness to meet every demand.” Over the course of 10 years, Glenn and his staff have built up strong relations with their client base. “We are not looking for quick sales’ we’re in it for the long run,” says Glenn. “A lot of customers are now pals of mine and I know everybody who comes into the shop.” His friendly charm and dogged perseverance in materials procurement has also won him an expanding international client base, supplying projects across Europe.

COMPLIANCE The Covid-19 pandemic has had an unexpected effect on customer service for Glenn and his team. “With people working from home, I think many are finding they can be far more productive. We’ve found that people are a lot more diligent when it comes to requesting certification of product. We had to up our game and become really adept at quickly finding technical compliance information for customers.” Glenn remarks that Thermoparts are being asked for testing certification for
every single product that they sell. “We are lucky because we have a very strong supplier network who are attentive to our product information requests.” Thermoparts are also very active on the domestic side. “Homeowners have been investing their holiday funds into home improvements during the pandemic and we’ve helped many get their domestic projects across the line.” There have been a few unusual requests along the way, says Glenn. “We had one request from a guy who
wanted a sprinkler system for his roof in order to scare away potential nesting birds. Another guy comes in to buy fittings to create artwork. No matter who the customer is, or how large their project is, we are here to help.” MOVING FORWARD With the plumbing industry constantly evolving it’s important that Glenn and his team change with it. “We provide a great range of products and excellent customer service. There’s nothing that comes across the door that we can’t handle. I’m 10 years down the road, and I still love it. “I find all the technical stuff really interesting, particularly the renewable energy side of the industry. Fortunately, the guys I’m surrounded with are as excited and as interested about innovation as I am and that’s the reason why we’ll continue to grow as a business.” No matter who the customer is, or how large their project is, we are here to help.”

OFTEC IRELAND NEWS
Update:
PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE PROVIDES AN INSIGHT INTO OFTEC IRELAND AND THE PROMOTION OF THE LIQUID FUEL INDUSTRY IN IRELAND…
AHEAD OF COP26, OFTEC IRELAND’S DAVID BLEVINGS TAKES A LOOK AT THE HOME HEATING SECTOR… ‘Home heating must be high up on the agenda’ F or almost three decades, the United Nations (UN) has brought countries together for global summits, known as COPS (Conference of the Parties), to discuss climate change. This year is the 26th UN climate change conference (COP 26) and will be hosted by the UK in Glasgow on October 31 - November 12, 2021. In the time between its first summit and now, concerns over climate change have progressed to a global priority. As a result, the focus of this conference is the delivery of goals set out in the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. In other words, COP26 will focus on meaningful action at a time when the stakes seem at an all-time high. Though the majority of UK talks will likely cover GB, Northern Ireland’s challenges are unique and need to be recognised as such. With high rates of fuel poverty, a just transition will be required to ensure that any decarbonisation process is fair and effective, particularly in the home heating sector. While heat pumps have featured heavily in Boris Johnson’s plans for a ‘green industrial revolution’ with proposed grants of £5,000, the evidence shows that for NI this would be a costly route to go down. According to the latest Home Condition Survey, less than 50% of homes in Northern Ireland have an Energy Efficiency Rating (EEC) of C or above*, meaning that they would require costly and potentially disruptive home improvement for heat pumps to work efficiently. That would mean that the 500,000 homes in

OFTEC IRELAND NEWS
David Blevings and Sean McBride from OFTEC Ireland visit SERC for Sapphire Blue Flame Modulating boiler demo.
Biofuel boiler demo OFTEC Ireland visited SERC Newtownabbey recently for a demonstration to installers and housing association representatives on the advantages of the Sapphire Blue Flame Modulating low NOX liquid fuel boiler from EOGB. Speaking after the event, David Blevings from OFTEC Ireland said, “We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and demonstration of the new Sapphire boiler at SERC in Newtownards. Both EOGB and SERC are OFTEC members, and along with all our boiler-manufacturing members, EOGB are pushing the change to renewable fuels. This includes the utilisation of bioliquids, and it is great to see the investment by EOGB and SERC in developing this opportunity locally for installers.” Sean McBride from OFTEC Ireland said, “It was positive to meet a group of installers and housing association representatives who are now genuinely interested and asking questions about biofuels and how they can assist to move oil consumers off grid to a low carbon fuel.”
Northern Ireland currently using a liquid fuel would require insulation upgrades, On average, these are between £12,300 - £18,900**. On top of that, the average installation cost of an air source heat pump would add approximately an additional £11,000. So the minimum cost to install an air source heat pump could be in the region of £23,000. FUEL POVERTY We are not against heat pumps. They are a good product if used in a new or very well-insulated house. The problem we have in Northern Ireland is that our housing stock is poorly insulated. We don’t service our appliances on a regular basis and only change or upgrade a heating appliance when it breaks down. That does not bode well for the deployment of heat pumps. Pre-pandemic Northern Ireland experienced a 22% rate of fuel poverty, with many more now facing economic difficulties as we navigate out of the other side following two years of instability. OFTEC Ireland is continually reiterating that the introduction
of a biofuel is a viable, affordable option and should be part of Northern Ireland’s future energy mix. Earlier this year, OFTEC Ireland responded to the Energy Strategy consultation, issued by the Department of Energy, which outlined options for phasing out fossil fuels. In our response, we detailed that significant reductions in carbon emissions (c.88%) from a liquid fuelled boiler can be achieved today if we switched all Northern Irish consumers to 100% hydro treated vegetable oil, or HVO as it is commonly known. Replacing kerosene with HVO would be a seamless transition for existing liquid fuel users and a simple option for Government to reduce carbon emissions in the off-grid sector at least cost for consumers. The results of the consultation will be published later this year, but our hope is that COP26 highlights that achieving net zero doesn’t leave anyone behind because of their income. * Northern Ireland House Condition Survey (NIHCS) 2016. ** UK Gov. AQUABION - THE BEST ALTERNATIVE TO A DOMESTIC WATER SOFTENER – HAS JUST ARRIVED AT PLUMB-IT… Bye bye limescale, hellomany benefits
E asy to install, space-saving and with an impressive international track record, when it comes to solutions to limescale the S15 and S20 Aquabion water conditioners are like nothing else for the domestic market. Using the same technology as their big brother commercial options and made to the exact same standard, the Aquabion solution is extremely cost-effective. Your hard-water customers will recoup their initial costs within two to three years while enjoying up to seven years of limescale protection – maintenance- free and with a industry-unique, 5-year-performance-based warranty, you shouldn’t be looking anywhere else. Now stocked for wholesale by Dublin-based merchant Plumb-It, the Aquabion water conditioners offer your customers a proven limescale solution for their homes. They can ditch their bulky salt water softener and their regular bulk buys of salt in favour of this clever piece of kit that does away with the need for an electrical installation or chemical additives. “We are very excited to become the new agents for Aquabion products,” said Paul Byrne, Sales Manager for Plumb-It. “I have always been a fan of the Aquabion range. It was first brought to my attention by word of mouth, which is a great indication of how this product has really connected with the trade. “As we are agents for Ariston boilers and water heaters, the Aquabion range will really complement our usual supply and I’m confident that pairing up with Aquabion will only exceed all companies’ expectations in respect to growth. “The plan is to stock domestic products such as the S15 and S20 first off, with commercial products available upon request.”
Annisa Hassan, Business Development Manager and Paul Byrne, Sales Manager, Plumb-it.
There are many different technologies that manufacturers use to try and create the elusive non-adhering lime. However, zinc has always been the preferred. The BIG problem has always been fouling. Aquabion’s patented tech stops the fouling from happening. The Aquabion uses a galvanic and electrolytic solution, which is combined with their patented self-cleaning agitators. This means that the tiny amounts of zinc ions that are released react with the calcite ions to create non-adhering lime.
“To have Plumb-It as the wholesaler for independent merchants in Ireland can only strengthen the Aquabion brand in the Irish market,” concluded Paul Wilson, Commercial Director for Aquabion Ireland. Galletti Ductimax available from Hevac.
GALLETTI DUCTIMAX I FAN COIL UNITS SQUEEZE BIG PERFORMANCE INTO TINY SPACES… Hevac is home topowerful yet compact Galletti DUCTIMAX I units
T he new Galletti DUCTIMAX i fan coil units from Hevac have been conceived for air conditioning interiors where the installation of high- performance medium-head units with reduced overall dimensions is required. The DUCTIMAX range comprises 12 models with air flow rates from 300 to 1200 m3/h and nominal cooling capacities of up to 8kW. A high efficiency heat exchanger with 3 or 4 rows allows the DUCTIMAX to be used in a wide variety of operating conditions. It can be combined with another 1 or 2 row exchanger for exceptional performance even with low temperature differentials. The heat exchangers can also be optimised for centralised applications such as district cooling. The DUCTIMAX units are designed for horizontal ceiling installation, with the main condensate drip tray situated inside the structure of the unit and at a positive pressure relative to the drain outlet to facilitate condensate drainage. Built from galvanised steel sheet, the units are heat and sound insulated by means of Class 1 self-extinguishing panels. The structure makes it possible to combine a wide range of accessories on the air intake

and outlet sides so as to obtain the optimal configuration of the unit. DUCTIMAX I fan coil units also feature a washable air filter made of acrylic fibre with filtration class G2 or G3 applied on the air intake. The use of a single-phase asynchronous multi-speed electric motor with a permanently connected capacitor and thermal protector, mounted on vibration- damping supports, allows proper sizing of the machine by correctly balancing performance and noise levels. Double suction centrifugal fans are made with ABS or aluminium, with statically and dynamically balanced forward-curving blades which are directly coupled to the electric motor. The new Galletti DUCTIMAX units available from Hevac are built for compatibility and can be combined with a wide range of wall- mounted controllers, including controllers of an electromechanical type and microprocessor controllers with display. The use of MYCOMFORT MEDIUM and LARGE or EVO enables Ductimax to be connected to ERGO; and heating elements complete with safety devices available to supplement the hydronic system. The action of the G3 air filter can also be combined with an air ionisation system.
• Multi speed motor • Heat exchanger up to 4 rows • Reversible water connections • ABS centrifugal fans • Can be integrated into the ERGO Incorporable ioniser Features include:

ACV HEATMASTER TC BOILERS, AVAILABLE FROM C&F QUADRANT, OUTPERFORM TRADITIONAL COIL INSTALLATIONS IN SCHOOL HEATING PROJECTS… ACVandC&FQuadrant - heating schools across UKand Ireland
C &F Quadrant has a well- earned reputation for serving the heating needs of school projects across the UK and Ireland. They do this by providing high quality, innovative products such as the range of ACV HeatMaster TC boilers. ACV has developed a product with the installer and school client in mind. When it comes to performance, energy saving and space saving, the benefits of a Tank-in-Tank system outperforms a traditional coil installation on almost every occasion. In a school environment, where high volumes of safe hot water are an absolute must, HeatMaster TC boilers lead the way. They have also been successfully installed in other high volume environments such as hospitals and sports centres. The HeatMaster TC not only features exceptional efficiency, but it is designed to cope with hot water demands for larger properties and commercial applications. This means superb mains pressure hot water delivery which is unrivalled in a boiler of this output, giving high
volumes, fast recovery times and quick response to demand. These exceptional hot water outputs include in excess of 40 litres per minute. In fact, the HeatMaster TC is the only storage combination boiler to fully condense during the hot water and heating modes. The secret to this success is the specially designed new stainless steel heat exchanger. The combustion gases pass downwards through the heat exchanger tubes and condense in the lower circuit of the HeatMaster TC, making maximum use of the energy available from the combustion process. The result is a highly efficient combination boiler, which gives exceptional output for its size.
Key features:
• Six outputs from 25kW to 120kW - there is a HeatMaster TC boiler to suit almost every installation • Stainless steel heat exchanger • Combination direct fired heating and hot water unit • Condenses in heating and hot water mode - up to 99% efficiency using passive flue heat recovery technology • High performance DHW - almost 2000 litres of hot water in the first hour @ 60C • Small footprint 0.5m2 – high output • Fast recovery – from 10C to 80C in 23 minutes (HM120TC) • Anti Legionella due to high storage temperature • Unrivalled resistance to scale
