Estate Facts and Figures The University’s estate extends to a total site area of 95 hectares, comprising a non-residential estate of 110 buildings (totalling around 200,000m2) and a residential estate of 191 separate buildings with a floor area of around 100,000m 2 , providing 4,223 student places. The insurance replacement value of the entire campus is £877 million. The majority of the academic facilities are situated to the south of Leicester city centre comprising a dedicated campus supplemented by a number of individual properties to the north and south, all located within a 1 mile radius. Additional facilities are concentrated at our partner hospital sites, and to the south east of the campus in Oadby and Knighton. Our Estate Our compact campus features architecture that ranges from the Victorian grandeur of the Fielding Johnson Building to the state-of-the-art David Wilson Library, all presided over by the three towers which form the University’s distinctive silhouette, including the 18-storey Attenborough Tower which houses one of the very few remaining paternosters in the UK. Our world-famous Engineering Building was the first major building designed by British architects Sir James Stirling and James Gowan. Completed in 1963, the Grade II* listed building comprises workshops and laboratories at ground level and a tower containing offices and lecture theatres. We are currently undertaking works to replace the roof and glazed facades of the building to secure its use for the 21 st century. We’re committed to sustainability in everything that we do and to delivering a continual reduction in our carbon footprint. All new developments are designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, as evidenced in our most recent development, the £42 million Centre for Medicine Building. DIRECTOR OF ESTATES AND CAMPUS SERVICES The Role
The Director of Estates and Campus Services will play a pivotal role in helping to shape the future of the University by leading the development of the University’s physical environment in order to support the University’s Strategic Plan. The role will preserve the special character of our University while transforming the facilities to deliver a welcoming and cohesive campus experience – and establish a distinctive and high-quality environment that fosters collaboration and achievement. The Director will report to the Registrar and Chief Operating Officer and as a member of his Professional Services Management Team, the role holder will provide strategic advice and guidance relating to the University’s Physical Environment Strategy to the University Leadership Team (ULT) and as a member of University Executive Board (UEB). Through the Director of Campus Services, the Director will also be responsible for the delivery of efficient and effective support services, and for developing the commercial strategies that underpin our residential and commercial offers. The new Director will be an exceptional leader and role model with a deep knowledge of managing a dynamic and complex estate. They will also require commercial acumen and to be an excellent negotiator, experienced in dealing with external partners and contractors.

The Director of Campus Services is a board member representing the Estates and Campus Services team alongside the Director of Finance and other Directors. External External relationships are an increasing important element of the role, particularly in relation to the NHS, City Council and Mayor, and the wider HE and property networks.

Leicester is one of the UK’s 10 largest cities and represents the largest economy in the East Midlands region. It has a bustling and diverse atmosphere and recent regeneration (to the tune of £3 billion) has made this cosmopolitan city even more exciting. Leicester is famous for its diversity and offers an amazing chance to dive into many different cultural celebrations. Leicester celebrates Diwali (the Festival of Light) with spectacular lights, stunning street parades and dazzling fireworks. It is attended by 35,000 people and is the largest celebration of the festival outside of India. The UK’s second biggest Caribbean Carnival takes place every August, with amazing food, colourful sights and a real party atmosphere. Leicester has a state-of-the-art Curve Theatre and the Phoenix Square is a brand new arthouse cinema complex. De Montfort Hall has a diverse range of shows, including mainstream gigs, jazz, musicals, opera and world music. The city also hosts the annual Leicester Comedy Festival, Britain’s longest-running comedy festival. The city benefits from a large number of public parks including Abbey Park and also Victoria Park which is adjacent to the University. Leicester is steeped in history, dating back to the original Iron Age settlement which was to become an important Roman trading centre with a commanding position on one of Britain’s most important routes – the Fosse Way. The growth of industry reached its peak in the great hosiery, textiles and footwear enterprises of the 20 th century. In the centre of England, Leicester is 100 miles north of London , 25 miles from Nottingham, 40 miles from Birmingham and 70 miles from Oxford and Cambridge. Leicester is close to the M1 and M69 motorways , and is well served by the rail networks – London is just 65 minutes away by train with four trains every hour. East Midlands airport and Birmingham International airport are also within easy reach.

Regeneration IN LEICESTER
Leicester is recognised as a creative city, having been ranked in the past few years ahead of Nottingham, Birmingham, Newcastle and Liverpool on a ‘Bohemian Index’ compiled by consultancy group Demos. It offers museums and galleries including the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, which houses Sir Richard Attenborough’s unique collection of Picasso ceramics. The New Walk Museum also has the largest collection of German Expressionist art outside Germany, plus works by artists including Francis Bacon, Hogarth, Lowry and William Dyce. The University, working in close partnership with city, has been the inspiration behind two of Leicester’s most famous tourist attractions. The award-winning National Space Centre – the UK’s largest attraction dedicated to space exploration and the Richard III Visitor Centre which retells the dramatic story of the University’s discovery of England’s most infamous King. The city is home to the University of Leicester and De Montfort University as well as various further education colleges and excellent public and private schools. During term time students make up nearly 15 per cent of the city’s population. Leicester is well-known as a sporting capital – hosting the country’s best supported rugby team the Leicester Tigers as well as Leicester City Football Club and Leicestershire County Cricket Club. Other attractions in Leicestershire include Belvoir Castle near Melton Mowbray and the historic Bosworth Battlefield where King Richard III lost his life. To the east, within easy commuting distance, is one of the most tranquil areas of English countryside, boasting a host of traditional villages and Rutland Water, which is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in Europe and supports a wide range of water sports. Leicester and the surrounding region offer a wide choice of property to buy or rent. In the city itself, there is a diverse mix of flats and apartments. Both new and older properties, including substantial homes, can be found in leafy parts of Leicester within easy reach of the University. Alternatively, there is property available in the attractive villages and market towns in Leicestershire and Rutland such as Market Harborough and Oakham.
