A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR, PROFESSOR PAUL BOYLE Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Estates and Campus Services at the University of Leicester. We are the University that discovered DNA fingerprinting, found Richard III under a car park, and turned Larkin into a Librarian. Now we are looking for the person who can lead the development and implementation of our Estates Strategy to preserve the special character of our University, while transforming the facilities to deliver a welcoming and cohesive campus experience.

We are passionate about empowering people to question, and to explore; making a significant social, economic and cultural difference in the world. We are successful because we are passionate about our work and because we engender a vibrant, tolerant and accessible intellectual community. We are consistently one of the most socially inclusive of the UK’s leading universities with a long-standing commitment to providing fairer and equal access to higher education. Although our progress over recent years has been significant, we have no interest in standing on our laurels. Our new Strategic Plan reflects our ambition to raise the University’s profile; building on our contribution at a regional, national and international stage through the excellence of our research and teaching. The strength of our research will be underpinned by the development of

Our city is recognised as one of the most vibrant and creative communities in Britain. From our recent premiership win, to our annual Diwali celebrations – one of the largest outside India – Leicester has a fantastic community spirit and there really is something for everyone to enjoy. With the discovery of Richard III bringing almost £60 million to Leicester’s economy and our continued partnership with the National Space Centre – one of the UK’s largest visitor attractions devoted to space science and astronomy – the University is proud to be part of Leicester’s success. There has never been a better time to join the University, or to work in our city. Since taking up my position in October 2014, I have challenged the University community to build on our platform of achievement. A belief in discovery- led education, and in the synergy of teaching and research are our hallmarks.

stronger partnerships in academia, in government and across industry. The Director of Estates and Campus Services is a crucial appointment and will play a significant role in our future success. As a member of the Professional Services Management Team, you will help shape the University’s future strategic direction and its implementation, leading a £350 million programme of capital investment that will transform our campus. This is an exciting time in our history with the new Director of Estates and Campus Services taking a prominent role within the city’s regeneration, working closely with our partners at the Council and the NHS. You will lead the development of the new Estates Strategy and Campus Masterplan from which will emanate a number of city- wide developments in conjunction with significant capital investment on our main campus. You will influence and inspire others, ensuring the Estates Strategy significantly enhances the student, staff and visitor experience. You will also ensure that our Campus Services provide a ‘best in class’ customer-focused service. In return, we can offer you the opportunity to work at the heart of a successful, ambitious and growing organisation, playing a key role in influencing our reputation. We look forward to hearing from you.

THE University

We are ranked in the top 1 per cent of universities worldwide and have an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. We are led by discovery and innovation, with the synergy between research and learning at the core of our activity. We have a proud history, founded in the aftermath of World War I as a living memorial to those who lost their lives in the Great War. Our motto – Ut Vitam Habeant , ‘so that they may have life’ – reflects our values to do justice to the hopes and expectations of those on whose shoulders we now stand, striving to make a difference in everything that we do. Today our University is a lively, energetic and global community, in which dedicated and talented people are anticipating, working towards, and helping to shape the future. We do everything we can to recognise diversities, achieve equalities and enable all of our staff and students to be people who flourish. The recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) confirmed our position as a leading research university, ranked among the top 25 universities for research power. Our research has wide-ranging impacts on society, health, culture, and the environment, with 75% judged to be internationally excellent. Whether it’s our revolutionary work in DNA fingerprinting, the discovery of Richard III or breakthroughs in the treatment of degenerative diseases, we consider education and knowledge to be a power for good. Ours is an enviably close-knit campus, in the heart of the most multicultural city in the UK. Welcoming and cohesive, our surroundings facilitate collaboration in a winning city with a reputation for defying the odds. We are committed to helping our city meet its most significant environmental, social and educational challenges, and our new strategic plan reflects our ambition to raise the University’s profile and contribution to society on a regional, national and international stage. THE Estate

Estate Facts and Figures The University’s estate extends to a total site area of 95 hectares, comprising a non-residential estate of 110 buildings (totalling around 200,000m2) and a residential estate of 191 separate buildings with a floor area of around 100,000m 2 , providing 4,223 student places. The insurance replacement value of the entire campus is £877 million. The majority of the academic facilities are situated to the south of Leicester city centre comprising a dedicated campus supplemented by a number of individual properties to the north and south, all located within a 1 mile radius. Additional facilities are concentrated at our partner hospital sites, and to the south east of the campus in Oadby and Knighton. Our Estate Our compact campus features architecture that ranges from the Victorian grandeur of the Fielding Johnson Building to the state-of-the-art David Wilson Library, all presided over by the three towers which form the University’s distinctive silhouette, including the 18-storey Attenborough Tower which houses one of the very few remaining paternosters in the UK. Our world-famous Engineering Building was the first major building designed by British architects Sir James Stirling and James Gowan. Completed in 1963, the Grade II* listed building comprises workshops and laboratories at ground level and a tower containing offices and lecture theatres. We are currently undertaking works to replace the roof and glazed facades of the building to secure its use for the 21 st century. We’re committed to sustainability in everything that we do and to delivering a continual reduction in our carbon footprint. All new developments are designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, as evidenced in our most recent development, the £42 million Centre for Medicine Building. Completed in 2016, the The University’s estate is hugely influential in the decision making process of students when choosing to study here, therefore we are proud to provide a high quality environment for work, study and life, and are committed to delivering continuous improvements to ensure our estate is the best it can be.

building is the UK’s biggest Passivhaus building and represents the largest investment in medical education by any UK university in the last decade. Our ongoing redevelopment of the Fielding Johnson square – transforming the space from a car park, into a vibrant open space at the heart of our campus – further demonstrates our commitment to continually developing our campus to support the needs of our staff and students. We are the first university in the country to launch a partnership with our Students’ Union for on-campus catering and retail facilities, demonstrating our recognition of the importance of campus services contributing to staff and student experience. Since 2010, the University estate has won over 100 construction awards which include the BREEAM worldwide sustainability standard Certificate of Excellence for the Centre for Medicine.
