Après cette demande, GSLR a tenu, le 4 avril, une consultation publique pour pouvoir effectuer un changement de zonage dans le secteur visé. Hydro-Québec voit dans cette démarche une manoeuvre pour l’empêcher de vendre ses terrains excédentaires. Le dimanche 7 avril, Grenville- sur-la-Rouge a publié un communiqué de presse pour rappeler notamment qu’elle attendait toujours la réponse du premier ministre. Le 12 avril, la MRC a déclaré être désormais « l’interlocuteur privilégié » et a insisté pour faire savoir qu’elle n’endosse pas les propos tenus par le maire de GSLR et qui ont été rapportés par un journal local.

Township council approved a public works department request to apply for financial aid under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program. Projected cost for the project is $700,000. If the application is approved the project would be part of the 2020 public works budget, with the federal government funding up to half of the cost while the provincial government funds one-third of the cost. residents who put items out for collection need to pay attention to what is and is not allowed as part of the spring collection. “Mattresses are the big one,” said McMa- hon, about items that are on the “do not put out for pick up” list. Any items not suitable for pick up will have a sticker put on them. Homeowners are then responsible for taking those items to the dump themselves for disposal. If they
are still sitting on the roadside after a certain amount of time, a township crew will take the junk to the dump, but the homeowner will then receive either a bill from the township or have the cost added to next year’s property tax bill. The public works department will present a report on the success of the sticker system for the annual spring cleanup at a future council session.

Samme Putzel entertained listeners with selections of their works. Jephcott offered readings from her collection, The Tangerine Cat, starting with the title story itself, an almost-Dickensian tale of a hardhearted curmudgeon who undergoes a kinder gentler spiritual transformation, on a dark winter’s night, thanks to a homeless and pregnant cat seeking shelter. When she is not working her small specialty farm or helping organize local festivals, Putzel occupies her spare time writing a series of mystery novels and filling journals with her poetry. That Wednesday afternoon she shared several selections from her collection.
&/#3&'r#3*&'4 MUNICIPAL DRAIN LEVIES Property owners with lands along municipal drainage routes in Champlain Township will see their drain levy share notices soon. Township council approved payment bylaws for all seven municipal drains. The levies are shared among all property owners upstream of each drain and cover maintenance costs. The levy totals range from $200 for the main drain of the Lower Hawkesbury to $10,151.18 for the Gilbert J. Barton Municipal Drain. Most of the maintenance for that drain involved dealing with beaver dams. Property owners have until May 31 to pay their shares with late payments subject to a bank rate interest penalty. – Gregg Chamberlain CONDUCT CODE APPROVED Champlain Township council now has a code of conduct to follow. Council approved the code of conduct during its February 12 session, which now brings it in line with the demands of the current version of the Ontario Municipal Act (OMA). Council has until March 1 of this year to appoint an integrity commissioner, as required under the OMA. The code of conduct sets guidelines for various issues, including how council members deal with municipal staff, public transparency for council business, and how council members can avoid conflict of interest situations. – Gregg Chamberlain MAKE A WISH GRANT Champlain Township council approved a $100 donation to the Make a Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario to help support publication of its Share the Power of a Wish promotional brochure, which aids the non-profit group’s fundraising work. The group grants “wishes” for children with serious or terminal medical conditions.
