So far this year, 42 people, who were not wearing a seat belt, have been killed on OPP- patrolled roads compared to 34 people last year for the same time period. !e most recent OPP statistics are even more alar- ming. During the week of September 7 to 13, seven people were killed in motor-vehicle collisions in Ontario with six of those people wearing a seat belt. “Adult seat belt use is the most e"ective way to save lives and reduce injuries inmotor vehicle collisions,” said OPP Deputy Com- missioner Brad Blair, Tra#c Safety and Ope- rational Support. “Yet, thousands of adults still do not wear their seat belts on every trip. Not wearing a seat belt can be a fatal decision even on short, familiar journeys and at low

speeds. We know that enforcement of seat belt laws does make a di"erence in getting more people to buckle up, so OPP o#cers will be diligent during this campaign.” A driver can be charged and face a $ne totalling $240 and two demerit points for seat-belt infractions. Under the Highway Tra#c Act, any person travelling in amotor vehicle who is at least 16 years of age must occupy a seat with a seat belt. A lot of people either have kidney disease or are at risk of getting it and don’t know about it.!e walk will not only help to raise funds, but it will help to raise awareness as well.” !e number of Canadians being treated for kidney failure has tripled in the last 20 years. “Now, more than ever, there is a need to inc- rease awareness of kidney disease,” said Greg Robbins, President of !e Kidney Foundation of Canada, Ontario Branch. “KidneyWalks raise funds to support kidney disease research and assist those living with kidney disease when they need it most.” Kidney Walks are the Foundation’s largest community fundraiser. !is year’s goal is $850,000. !e events may only last a few hours, but the connections and camaraderie for those living with kidney disease who attend has a lasting impact. “Participants tell us time and time again that the event itself provides such an important venue because they see that they are not alone in their experience,” added Robbins. “Walk for someone you love living with kid- ney disease,” said Robbins. Kidney disease is impacting communities and families in growing numbers. Today, one in ten Canadians has kidney disease and over 1,000 Ontarians are waiting for a kidney transplant. “60 to 70 per cent of kidney disease is caused by diabetes,” said Holly Pankhurst of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. “High blood pressure is another cause of kidney disease.” Roger Paquette from Hawkesbury has had kidney disease for the past three years. Paquette’s kidney disease came about as a result of dia- betes. He receives dialysis three times per week and each session lasts approximately four hours. “Patients have to pay for their own transportation and parking,” said Suzanne Laniel of!e Kidney Foundation of Canada. “!e Kidney Founda- tion helps to pay for things like transportation, research, peer support, Christmas hampers and blankets. Patients get very cold during dialysis and the hospitals don’t supply blankets.” “!e walk will help support all of these pro-
