ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
The Lakes South Morang College respectfully acknowledges that beneath our classrooms, learning streets and significant River Red Gums that feature across our College ’ s landscape lay the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri - Willam people of the Kulin Nation.
We thank the Traditional Custodians of this land and pay tribute to their ongoing connection to land, water, knowledge and culture.
We are inspired by those who have inhabited, nurtured and cared for this land since the beginning, and we aspire to continue caring for this land for the rest of time.
We pay our respect to ancestors, elders, and, those emerging to lead future generations, as well as any First Nations people connected to our College community.
CHILD SAFETY
DIVERSITY AND EQUITY
To thrive, young people have the right to a safe and supportive environment at school, at home, and, in the broader community; no exceptions. At the Lakes South Morang College, we believe meeting the physical, social and emotional needs of our students is paramount in laying the foundations for a fulfilling future. We pledge to provide an environment that has zero tolerance to child abuse and strive to work in partnership with our parents/carers and community members to keep our students safe; every day, in every way.
The Lakes South Morang College proudly celebrates and affirms our diverse College community.
We recognise that diversity exists in bodies, hearts and minds, and, we commit to promoting equity, inclusion, compassion and mutual respect. Diversity and equity enrich our College and both are instrumental to our success as we nurture a community of learners and future leaders who feel safe to: express themselves; explore the world around them; and, develop and grow in a global and dynamic society.

OUR STORY
Nestled in the heart of South Morang, The Lakes South Morang College stands proudly, its roots deep within the soil, much like the majestic River Red Gums that grace its grounds. The land on which The Lakes stands has long been a place of teaching and learning, as it has been for the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of this Country. For generations, knowledge, culture, wisdom, and nurturing of the land has been passed down to all who inhabit it. In their spirit, we too embrace our role as custodians, committed to protecting and caring for all that lives and learns on these grounds. We honour the Country of the Wurundjeri - willam people by fostering an environment of respect, custodianship, and growth, ensuring that this land continues to be a place of learning for generations to come. The ancient River Red Gums adorning our grounds have watched over the land for millennia, their towering forms symbolising resilience, growth, and the passage of time. As with every tree, our students begin their journey as tiny seeds, full of potential and promise. Just as a tree grows through different stages—from seedling to sapling, and finally to a mature tree—so too do our students as they progress from Prep through to Year 12. Each year brings new branches of knowledge, each experience adds to the richness of their character, and every challenge strengthens their core, just as the trunk of a tree becomes sturdier with age. Our College is home to many types of eucalyptus trees, reflected in our College emblem, each one unique yet connected by a shared environment. This diversity mirrors our school community, where each student, staff member, and family brings their own individuality to our collective experience. Like the
eucalyptus trees, we stand tall together, celebrating our differences while nurturing a shared commitment to growth, learning, and connection. Our emblem also features gentle waves, which represent the natural ebb and flow of learning and development. These waves symbolise the Plenty River and surrounding waterways that sustain the River Red Gums and also represent the different levels of schooling that our students navigate— starting from the early ripples of Prep, moving through the steady currents of Primary school, and eventually riding the stronger waves of Secondary education. In every wave, there are moments of calm and moments of challenge. Our students learn to navigate these with resilience and adaptability, just as the eucalyptuses bend with the wind but remain rooted in the earth. As they progress, they are supported by the entire school community— teachers, peers, and families—ensuring that no wave is too daunting to overcome. The Lakes is not just a place of learning; it is a thriving ecosystem where every individual is nurtured and where the growth of each student is as natural and inevitable as the growth of the great River Red Gums that have stood for generations. Together, we are all part of this vibrant, interconnected community, each contributing to the legacy of strength, diversity, and growth.

LEARNING WELCOME TO THE PRIMARY CAMPUS
At The Lakes South Morang College Primary Campus we develop our student ’ s individual skills and abilities, we focus on building the confidence and abilities of each of our students through individually tailored learning.
TEACHING & LEARNING We make learning fun and engaging. We have strong focus on literacy and numeracy development for all our students. In the early years, students learn about language through a systematic phonics approach. As they move through their schooling, the focus shifts to comprehension and thinking about texts. Students throughout the school are immersed in hands on, rich learning tasks to develop a range of mathematical skills to develop number awareness and mathematical thinking skills. The Lakes supports the development of modern technology skills in the areas of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, through the use of 21st century technologies. AGENCY & ENGAGEMENT Developing the wellbeing of our students is central to our role and we are committed to ensuring the emotional and physical health and safety of all children. Our shared values of - Respect, Teamwork, Learning and Leadership - are central to creating a safe, positive educational environment that values and builds student wellbeing. The Lakes South Morang College all students are empowered to learn and achieve, experiencing high quality teaching practice and the best conditions for learning which equip them with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for lifelong learning and shaping the world around them.
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
Supporting their needs and developing them as individuals
The implementation of disability inclusion fosters a sense of belonging among students, improves social and academic outcomes, and prepares all students for a diverse world. Inclusive education also challenges stereotypes and promotes a culture of respect and empathy. A variety of dedicated programs support individual learning needs and enhance student ’ s ability to succeed, academically, physically and emotionally. Classroom programs foster engagement and involve a strong oral and visual focus. TRANSITION Being among the most significant periods of growth for young children, parents are encouraged to be active participants in their child ’ s education. It begins with a happy transition from kindergarten to school and helping our young students develop a positive predisposition to learning and discovery. We involve parents and provide the care each child needs to feel safe and form friendships. As students reach the final years of their Primary education, they are supported with their transition to the Secondary campus through our integrated 5/6 step up program. For our current students, we offer an Intraschool Transition Program before the end of Term 4. This program allows them to experience what the following year will be like, understand the expectations of their new year level, and adjust to new expectations. Moreover, we hold a ‘ Meet the Teacher Day ’ in the last week of Term 4, where students spend two sessions in their new classroom with their new teacher.

LEARNER COACHES
LEARNER REVIEW MEETINGS
A Learner Coach is a dedicated educator who provides personalised academic support and guidance to students. Their primary role is to help students develop effective learning strategies, improve their study habits, and achieve their educational goals. Learner Coaches work one - on - one or in small groups with students to address their individual learning needs, goals and challenges. Learner Review Meetings are held in Term 1 and Term 3, following distribution of Progress Reports, and are in addition to a Meet and Greet session at the start of the year. During these meetings, parents/carers are invited attend sessions, alongside their child, in order to be an active and equal partner in the learning process. These sessions with classroom teachers provide updates regarding students ’ learning progress. Appointments are conducted in a hybrid model (onsite or online) for 10 minute durations and bookings are made via Compass.
Learner Coaches regularly monitor students' progress, provide feedback, and adjust learning strategies as needed to ensure continuous improvement. They act as a mentor and advocate for students, empowering them to take control of their learning and succeed academically.

ATTENDANCE
Schooling is compulsory for people aged 6 to 17 years (unless an exemption from attendance or enrolment has been granted). Daily attendance is important for all students to succeed in education and to ensure they do not fall behind - socially or developmentally. The Lakes believes all students should attend school all day, every day when the school is open for instruction and is committed to working in partnership with the College community to encourage and support full school attendance. Every 3 weeks, a letter will be sent to families when student attendance falls below 80% for that attendance period. Punctuality is essential to every session throughout the school day. Key Learning Intentions and Success Criteria are determined within the first 5 - 10 minutes of each lesson, supporting students to understand and prioritise learning for each session. Students who are late to individual classes will need to report to the administration office for a late pass. This will be recorded and communicated to families via Compass. Students arriving to school late or departing early will be signed out by an authorised adult over the age of 18 from the administration office. ABSENCE Families are asked to notify The Lakes of absences by recording the absence on Compass or alternatively contacting the Administration Office on either campus. If a student is absent, and the College has not been notified by a parent/carer, the College will contact families via a Compass notification to the Parent Portal. Extended students ’ absences need to be communicated to the Administration office.

Research has proven that when parents/carers have a strong partnership with their school and are involved with it in some way, their children are likely to be happier, more confident and perform better in their learning and relationships. Families are encouraged to lead with confidence and integrity and take active roles in decision - making processes and advocacy for their children. Teamwork: Education is a shared responsibility. Our College thrives on the collaboration between families, teachers, and students. We believe in open communication and mutual support, where the school and families work as a team to address challenges, celebrate successes and create the shared conditions for learners to thrive. Respect: At the core of any strong partnership is respect. We respect and value the diverse experiences, cultures, and perspectives that families bring to our community. By fostering a culture of respect, all families are valued and included. Mutual respect strengthens our relationships and enhances our College community.

Students with a concern or complaint can raise them with a trusted adult at College, for example, with classroom teachers, Learning Coaches, Year Level Leaders, Wellbeing staff, Koorie Education Support Officers, Education Support staff, and Peer Support Leaders. This person will take your concern or complaint seriously and will explain to you what steps we can take to try to resolve the issue and support you. You can also ask your parent, carer or another trusted adult outside of the College, to talk to us about the issue instead. Information about our parent/carer complaints and concerns process is outlined further below. The parent/carer process also applies to students who are mature minors, refer to: Mature Minors and Decision Making.
Other ways you can raise a concern or complaint with us include:
• talking to a member of the student leadership team about your concern and any suggestions you have for resolving it
• participating in our Attitudes to School Survey (for Years 4 - 12)

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE PRIMARY CAMPUS
Structure and Organisation Students have the same teacher for their core subjects and stay in their own classrooms. They have different teachers for their Lifestyles subjects and move between classrooms for these lessons. The Campus operates on a one - week timetable, with the daily schedule divided into five hour - long sessions across the day. Each student has a home group teacher who is their first point of contact at the school. Each year level also has a Year Level Leader who supports students in the year level. Learning, Homework and Assignments Learning is a progression, which means that it becomes increasingly specialised as you move through each year level. Alongside this progression, homework will start and become more regular and challenging. Assessment becomes more formal, with regular Common Assessment Tasks and other tests that contribute to overall grades and future academic pathways. Responsibility and Independence Students are expected to take greater responsibility for their learning, manage their time effectively, and be more independent in their studies. Students are expected to be bring their required equipment to school, ready for the start of school each day. Extracurricular Activities There is a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports teams, clubs, and leadership opportunities, often held before or after school, or during breaks. These provide a great opportunity for students to pursue passions and to meet people in other classes and year levels. Support Systems There are specialised support systems, including literacy and numeracy interventions and mental health support. Students should talk to their Home Group teacher about the support that they may need.
