Mayors quiz Enbridge Gas rep on future plans

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

for East Hawkesbury. “Canwe have some discussions, some one-on-one talks?” askedMayor François St-Amour of The Nation. “We have some big farmoutfits around our villages. They’d be big customers.” Alfred-Plantagenet Township Mayor Fernand Dicaire also invited McGill and other Enbridge officials to meet with his council during one of its committee of the whole sessions to talk about a pos- sible natural gas extension to the Village of Curran and other related issues. McGill noted that both the villages of Saint-Isidore inThe Nation and Curran in Alfred-Plantagenet Township are “right on themargin of qualifying” as possible new service extension projects for Enbridge under the revised OEB guidelines. Hawkesbury Mayor Jeanne Charle- bois asked whether there would be any provincial funding grant aid to help Enbridge with any of its expansion pro- posals. McGill noted that the province but that money is not available in the 2015 provincial budget though it may be part of the 2016 budget. He added that provincial officials have also indicated natural gas outfits should work through the OEB application process first to determine “how little of that (sup- port) money they might need to spend” so that both the loan and grant funds are available for community extension pro- jects which are on the edge of economic feasibility under the new guidelines. The revised guidelines now include a “community expansion surcharge” which may be applicable to a project. McGill des- cribed it as “one-time lump sumpayment” by customers that would be part of their monthly service bills and could amount to between $400 to $500 a year spread over a period of fromfive to 10 years depending on the size of the project. has indicated it will provide $230 mil- lion in loan funding and $30 million in grants-in-aid for natural gas service extension projects

The mayors on counties council hope theymight soon have some good news to report about the chances of natural gas becoming a future fuel option for many homeowners in their municipalities. Steve McGill of Enbridge Natural Gas sat downwith the UnitedCounties of Pres- cott-Russell (UCPR) council during its Oct. 28 regular session to provide an update on where the company is on its plans for expanding natural gas services into Eastern Ontario. He noted that, during the past year-and-a-half, the provincial government has shown “a strong interest” in helping natural gas outfits extend their services into rural communities. This past February, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) sent out invitations for proposals to revise the economic feasibility guidelines which have prevented Enbridge, Union Gas and others from considering many new or early next year,”McGill said, adding that Enbridge planned to test how the revised guidelines would work. The project Enbridge has in mind is outside of the Five Counties region but if it works out, McGill noted, then the com- pany will start reviewing its past reports on possible service expansion into Eastern Ontario communities.“Some of them in your jurisdiction,” McGill said. Several mayors expressed delight at the news, noting that there have been several petitions in The Nation Munici- pality, Alfred-Plantagenet Township, and East Hawkesbury Township about natural gas service extensions from the existing Enbridge mainline running through the counties. “We are the onlymunicipality in Pres- cott-Russell without access to natural gas,” said UCPR Warden Robert Kirby, mayor expansion projects because they were not financially viable. “We will be filing an application ei- ther later this year

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 472 were at VankleekHill Collegiate Institute (VCI) last Wednesday to present the 57 SD&G Highlander Cadet Corps with a cheque for $1,830 for their commitment and hard work. Shown above are Legion Secretary and Membership Chair June Elliott, Legion President Garry O’Neill, Corps support committee member Danika Vrancken, Corps members Captain Alex Castonguay and Chief Warrant Officer Ryon Gazey. Elliott, was happy to take part in the presentation ceremony at VCI, where the cadets meet every Wednesday evening. “I’m all for it,” said Elliott. “You’ve got to support the young people and encourage them. This teaches them responsibility and comradeship.” Every year the cadets work with the Hawkesbury-based Legion through various activities, such as the poppy drive. The sharing continued Friday evening when cadets showed up at Branch 472 to volunteer their efforts toward serving a smoked meat supper to all in attendance. On Sunday, more than 20 cadets returned to the branch once again before heading out in the rain for a full morning of door-to-door poppy sales. “What we’re doing is very important,” said 13-year-old Cpl. Owen Farrell who joined the cadets in 2014. “We’re showing our support for those who fought for our freedom.”

Quant à Michel Labonté, d’Embrun, il a terminé troisième. Ci-dessus, on reconnaît la gagnante de la catégorie 14 ans et moins, Emily Macdonald (Kingston), à côté de Danielle Forse (3 e de Pincourt), Albert Guilbeault-Demers (Plantagenet), Adèle Lavigne (Sainte-Anne), Andrew Laviolette (VKH), Flavien Lavigne (2 e de Sainte- Anne), Vercin Lavigne (Sainte-Anne), Jayson Lefebvre (Sainte-Anne). Absents : les coureurs Guillaume et Maxime Piché, de L’Orignal. (SL)

professional hockey by the age of 20 and would need more time to develop as a player. The second reason was he could acquire an education at the same time he would be improving and developing as a hockey player on his way to the top. My son was drafted as a minor midget in the 5th round of the QMJHL by the Shawinigan Cataracts. After midget hockey he moved lateral on the chart to a US Prep School in Connecticut until he graduated two years later. After this, he returned home to play Junior Tier 1 for the Hawkesbury Hawks for two more years. From there, the next level for him was the NCAA where today he plays at Cornell University. He will spend a total of four years at Cornell until he graduates and then decide if he will go to the next level which will be professional hockey. My son’s path and hockey development frommidget hockey will be a total of eight years before he becomes a professional player vs the accelerated path of just four years. As a player, you need to understand the process and what is right for you. I have seen too many players take the wrong path only to regret it and have the game of hockey come to a disappointing end for them. If you are that good of a player your path will be pretty much laid out for you. The longer path to the top may not be as glorious as the accelerate path but it will give more time to develop as a player and an opportunity to continue to use those famous words “ I want to get to the next level” more often. Europe NCAA Junior Tier 2

WI TH

HAWKESBURY HAWKS hockeytalk@eap.on.ca Shawn Anderson The Next Level – Part 2 The other option or path to the next level for midget players will be deϐinitely longer but, in most players’ cases, necessary and beneϐicial. As you can see on the chart, the path moves to the right instead of directly up. The lateral movement through this chart will depend completely on the player’s development and how good they will become by the time they have exhausted their eligibility before they become a professional hockey player. As you can see, some of the lines have arrows going both ways while others don’t, meaning once you travel down that path you cannot return. I will use my son’s path to give an example of having the opportunity to choose to travel both the accelerate path up or take a more development path approach. He chose the longer development path for two reasons; the ϐirst reason was knowing he would never be ready to play NHL AHL Midget CIS OHL

Les Aigles massacrent les Lions

Nicolas Pharand

ECHL

Junior Tier 1

(SL)
