The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Sustainability program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is 100% online* and designed for working professionals from interdisciplinary fields in sustainability. The program will prepare graduates to be educators and leaders who hold a passion for transforming systems of teaching and learning. The curriculum is intended to provide students the opportunity to actively engage in coursework, research and professional practice in the field of sustainability. For the purpose of the degree, sustainability is broadly defined using the six core principles. Students can explore sustainability in one or more of these principles to personalize learning in the program.

Introduction The Doctoral Program in Educational Sustainability explores social, environmental, and economic sustainability within an educational framework. Because of the interdisciplinary and global nature of the field, the School of Education (SOE) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) include SOE faculty, UWSP faculty and staff and broader affiliations of scholars and practitioners providing opportunities for scholarship and professional contributions in teaching, mentoring, serving on dissertation committees, and guest presenting. Through this program, students will not only engage in an opportunity to study with experts in their area of focus, the program will foster opportunities to engage with a network of sustainability educators.

Brief explanation of Project: Participant-Observer at the “Climate Strong! Professional Development Institute” July 7 to July 12, 2019. I will be assisting with the institute which will take place in Northern Wisconsin. It is based out of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin. Activities will take place at the center and in the surrounding Bad River and Red Cliff tribal communities. As part of the residency, I will work closely with Cathy Techtmann, Environmental Outreach State Specialist and Professor of Community Development for the Community Development Institute at the University of Wisconsin, Division of Extension. The program is part of the “Climate Strong! Climate Leadership Initiative.” Rationale for Committee: Conducting a study with Indigenous people must take into consideration Indigenous ways. The composition of this committee includes Dr. Parajuli who is indigenous to Nepal and understands alternative philosophies and regenerative perspectives. Dr. Rice is of Mohawk and has experience working with Elders as knowledge keepers. Dr. Johns Danforth is Oneida and has worked with Wisconsin Indigenous people. These three have experience with culture and Indigenous philosophies. It is important to have members that will provide an insiders perspective. All members have experience working with teachers of science and/or social studies.

The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week “boot camp” for future decision makers eager to join the sustainability and energy revolution happening around the globe. The program includes talks from business and academic organization around the globe on

sustainability. It also consists of site visits to sustainable facilities such as the Argonne National Lab. It also includes researching into real world concerns affecting our planet. The culmination of the program is a group project that tackles a real-world sustainable problem within a Chicago community that is then presented and ranked with the other groups. Description of Study (Names Next to Points of Support): My study will be to develop a reporting framework for smaller municipalities under a population of 50,000 on the Triple Bottom line of Sustainability. This framework will be categorized in a business framework modeled after the balanced scorecard (Robinson). I will also seek to study the process of quantifying the results of environmental, economic, and social impacts on a comparative basis in some economic fashion. (Segura III). In the applied residency, I will be working with the community of recycling and waste practitioners and systems, at the UWSP recycling center and with Marathon County Solid Waste Facility to collect industry-specific field data. The data will be analyzed for its educational functionality, systemic knowledge gaps, and possible interventions. I will observe people and production/ consumption/waste practices in their normal routines at work or home or in public, as people interact with material products. I will ask people to describe their interactions as they are happening. They will be photographed and/or video recorded, so that later, the data can be re-assembled into a media-based interactive-educational tool towards the crafting of an eco-language of and for material “Waste.” Brief Explanation of Project: I am conducting research about material products, their life cycle, and post-consumer life. The purposes of the research is to better understand how humans interact with consumer products, how they think about them, and how humans share a relationship with material waste streams, as consumers and producers of waste. The goal is to seek alternate and sustainable forms of communication about and for material interactions between environments and people.

My anticipated applied residency project is taking place at the University of Vermont this summer, where I will be attending and observing an experiential education workshop for educators at the John Dewey Institute. The website describes the workshop as:

“The University of Vermont offers a 3-day, on-campus workshop – the John Dewey Kitchen Institute – applies John Dewey’s philosophy into our kitchen lab, as a way to emphasize experiential education, as an important pedagogical approach for teaching any subject. We draw from John Dewey’s philosophy of education and epistemology (theory of knowing) to inspire and guide our work together” (John Dewey, para. 2) Rationale for Committee: My committee provides depth of expertise relevant to my doctoral research inquiry. Dr. O’Neil’s experience in transformative sustainability education, living learning systems, and background in food and food related pedagogic inquiry, makes her an ideal fit as my mentor and chair. Dr. Lange’s expertise in transformative adult education, sustainability education, and long work with doctoral students and candidates makes her another essential member of my advisory team. Lastly, Michael Makuch is a fellow culinary educator and scholar. He also has intimate knowledge to the Sustainable Food Systems program my research helps inform. His anticipated doctoral defense is slated for the winter of 2019.

Research Description: This project will explore relationality as it is conceptualized and operationalized within one Yoga Studio in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The focus of research is on assessing whether and how these Yoga instructors and practitioners connect Yoga with enrichment of regenerative/sustainable selves and relationality. This research treats yoga as performativity and will explore the ways philosophical and physical practice of yoga is conceptualized, and intended to cultivate relationality in the continuum between practitioner’s her/his interiority and exteriority. Rationale for Committee: The composition of this committee include Dr. Parajuli who is indigenous to Nepal and understands alternative philosophies and regenerative perspectives. Dr. Uselman brings considerable knowledge and expertise of alternative health and wellness modalities. Explanation of Applied Residency: For the Applied Residency (EDSU 920) my goal is to look at materials from courses in the General Education Program at UWSP which align with the Cultural and Environmental Awareness strand. The program outcomes for the General Education Program closely align with competencies, learning outcomes, and experiences stated in the literature for educational sustainability. However, much of the literature is still very theoretical and I would like to start understanding how this theory manifests itself in classroom experiences for any college-level student, before diving even deeper into the experiences of preservice teachers and their experiences in teacher education programs. Rationale for Committee: Teachers are change agents in helping to achieve sustainability within all aspects of education from kindergarten on up. My research will center around sustainability education in preservice teacher preparation programs in the United States to understand what is currently being done and pose potential ways to implement sustainability education so that it is not just one more thing added to an already full curriculum. The individuals on my committee have a strong history working in sustainability, teacher preparation or both. These individuals understand the complex nature of these fields, as well as an understanding of the expectations of K-12 education. They have all been classroom teachers and work with individuals in K-12 education in a variety of contexts.

Both technology and self-determination are priorities for the field of education of individuals with visual impairments. This study seeks to expand current understanding of the mediating effect of technology upon users’ experiences of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Self-Determination Theory has a long scholarly history and strong research base, and its definition of autonomy aligns closely to the definition of self-determination used by the field of education for individuals with visual impairment. Expanding this definition to include competence and relatedness should offer an expanded understanding of how to improve self-determination in the visually-impaired population.

I will be researching equity in the education of English learners of Hmong descent. My Applied Residency as well as my research will be at Phalen Lake Hmong Magnet School in the St. Paul Public School District. Phalen Lake is a bilingual Hmong EL program and practices in a dual immersion model where students learn academics in two different languages: Hmong and English. Rationale for Committee: I have chosen my committee members as they have the necessary competency and are well immersed in their fields, connecting closely to my research. Dr. O’Neil contributes through her lens of transformative learning, language and culture, and interdisciplinary practices. Dr. Nolet brings his lens in social justice, diversity engagement, equitable practices, and sustainability literacy. Expertise: Dr. Marcus Lewis is a colleague of mine at the Ho-Chunk Nation Education Department, and is also an enrolled member of the Ho-Chunk Nation.

Dr. Lewis is a very valuable resource tool for my Ed.D. work, as he just finished his dissertation, and was the person who encouraged me to apply for the Educational Sustainability program. Dr. Lewis has been collaborating with me on all of the Indigenous Arts and Sciences camps we have provided over the past 3 years, and is considered one of the leading presenters on Ho-Chunk kinship. He has vast knowledge about the traditions and practices of the Ho-Chunk Nation, and has also done research on incorporating Ho-Chunk culture and traditional sustainability practices into school curricula. He will be a very valuable tool to assist me with my dissertation subject and research, and has already assisted me tremendously in regards to my topic.
