Ça me rendait tellement heureuse et me donnait de l’espoir.

» It all started with a bake sale, organized by four young Cornwall girls back in 2014. Their goal was modest but was inspired by something magical: helping a student in need. Marc Borer was in need of a new sound processor that would improve his hearing by 20%. But the device was quite expensive. Hoping to muster up $500 worth of funds through their bake sale, the four girls were pleasantly surprised when they found out they had raised $1200. It was earlier this week that André Pommier from Pommier Jewelers decided to donate a keepsake to each of the girls. “As young girls, you’re already showing leadership,” he explained. become What they have

Making every day an adventure: Christopher Shawn Meister

Christopher Shawn Meister has been living in Belleville for three years and is completing his last year of Television and NewMedia Productions at Loyalist College. Meister, who grew up in Cornwall, hopes to travel the world and “film things that most people may never get to see”. Above, he’s pictured with the red, plaid shirt. — supplied photo

time making random short films with my friends. From there, my plan went fromnot only heading to Algonquin College to pursue Theatre Arts, but to then make my way to Loyalist College to pursue film.” Having several projects under his belt and with a deep knowledge of everything relating to film, Meister hopes to soon tackle future projects. “My dream is to have a career in the television or film industry whether it is in front or behind the camera,” he stressed. “Personally, I can’t come to say where this “dream” job would be because that’s just not who I am. What I can say is the absolute dreamwould involve traveling the world and filming things that most people may never get to see. Making everyday a new adventure is the true dream.” When asked what kind of advice he could give to individuals wanting to follow in his footsteps, Meister replied, “The moment you’re given a chance to go after your dream, take it. Any opportunity, no matter its outcome, only furthers who you are as a person. As I tell everyone about the choices I make, I’d rather say I tried and failed than regretting not trying at all.”

FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca

Content creating has always been a passion for Christopher Shawn Meister, from acting to filming. Having been raised in Cornwall, the young man is currently completing his last year of studies in the Television and NewMedia Production programof Loyalist College. Although Meister has been living in Belleville for the past three years, he still holds his hometown close to his heart. “Cornwall is where the passion began,” he explained. “More specifically while attending the Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School (CCVS). I already had my passion for acting, but without Robert Poirier as my drama teacher, pushing me and seeing nothing but good inme, that passion could have burned out.” Along with a passion for acting, the man quickly fell in love with filming. “I had won a Sony flip camera one day at my work, and from that day I would spendmost of my free

and often tears. Alas, the cost of participating in one’s prom can be quite steep. Two local bridal makeup artists have therefore joined forces to help 26 young women fromCornwall and surroundings realize their perfect prom. The duo, comprised of Karley Gagnon (owner of Hott Stylz) and Allison Bélanger (owner of PoppinMakeup andMore), is an odd pair, for they technically are competitors. “We both operate our businesses fromLong Sault,” explained Gagnon. “It’s a limited market, so we’re competitors,” added Bélanger. “But if I don’t have enough time

for clients, I point them in Karley’s direction.” The initiative, officially called the SD&G Makeover Project, is an extensive one, having been in the works for quite some time.“We have 13 high schools in S,D and G, explained Gagnon. “We’re going to be selecting two girls from every high school to receive a glamorized prom makeover. They’re going to be getting their hair done, makeup, nails, corsage, catering and gifts. Besides their wedding, for young girls, their prom is the most glamorous and epic moment in their lives.” The winners will be chosen through a

simple nomination process. One of their peers must first like the duo’s Facebook page and then email thema 100-word letter as to why they should be awarded themakeover. “Anyone can nominate you,” said Bélanger. “It can either be your mother, father, brother, aunt, uncle, a fellow student or even a teacher.” “We really are encouraging teachers to submit nominations of students,” quickly added Gagnon. “They really know their students.” The two have so far received several nominations and they have all thoroughly

Prom night is seen by many young girls as a magical, almost fairytale-like event. Donning dresses and pretty shoes, they apply makeup to their faces, various colors to their lips and spend hours perfecting their hair. Then, they join their peers in celebrating what is called bymany as their rite of passage from their teenage years to adulthood. The evening usually starts with a succulent supper and is followed by dancing, laughing

read them. “We’ll read them all,” expressed Bélanger. “All of them are wonderful and they’re all different.” Both women then remain silent for some time, before Gagnon clears her throat. “We’ve received all sorts of nominations, fromamother explaining how her daughter is academically gifted, to a father detailing the self esteem problems his daughter is going through. It’s very touching.” In the hopes of getting the region’s young girls receptive to the project, the two women went around high schools, distributing flyers. “That’s when we realized just how many high schools were in the region,” said a laughing Bélanger. “If I had had a project like that, back in the day, that would have been wonderful. On their day of prom, no one knows how to do it or what to do for that matter.” The day of their prom, the chosen girls will all join up at The Loft, a Cornwall salon, where they will be pampered for the whole morning.“We want them to feel like princesses for the day,” explained Gagnon. The two makeup artists are quick to point out that they couldn’t achieved the

project without much needed help from the community and local businesses. “There are no words to describe the sort of support we have received from the community,” confided Bélanger. “After only a couple of days, all of the sponsors we needed were already in it.” “I think this community and the SD&G area is wonderful and the local businesses have been extremely receptive to the project,” added Gagnon. In all, seven main sponsors stepped up to help the project: Hott Stylz, Poppin Makeup,The Loft, Moustache Joes, Blooms, Kelsey Lindsay Photography and Carol Grant Productions. Three secondary sponsors also volunteered to help: Dr.Navaneelan, Cardinal Wholesale Meats and Maryse Gagnon-Ruest - Broker, Royal LePage “It promises to be exciting and life changing,” explained Bélanger. “We’re hoping to do it every year, bigger and better,” comcluded Gagnon. Students of East Front Public School were excited to welcome the Easter Bunny. So much so, that some created rabbit hats and proudly wore them throughout the school. Such was the case of student AbinaThagikaran and teacher Carol-Anne Cayer. The Easter Bunny is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter, depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the creature originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behaviour at the start of the season of Eastertide. — supplied photo
