La ville de Hawkesbury a réitéré son appui pour le Monument de la francophonie lundi soir, deux mois après que le conseil municipal eut retardé le projet destiné pour le Parc de la Confédération. En mars, le conseil a ratifié une recommandation du personnel municipal de suspendre le projet sur l’île du Chenail, citant des frais d’entretien et un conflit possible avec le développement futur de la bordure riveraine. Par ailleurs, lors de l’assemblée du conseil lundi, les membres ont voté 5-2 en faveur d’une résolution présentée par le conseiller Alain Fraser et appuyé par le conseiller Marc Tourangeau, que la ville accorde l’autorité au comité du monument d’installer le symbole sur un terrain municipal. M. Fraser a mentionné que « les irritants reliés aux coûts d’entretien du Monument de la francophonie ont été adressés par le comité à la satisfaction de la municipalité ». La résolution dit que le conseil « donne suite à la demande des instigateurs du Monument de la francophonie en leur garantissant de façon formelle un emplacement sur l’un des sites ou terrains appartenant à la Corporation de la Ville de Hawkesbury, emplacement qui, par contre, ne serait choisi par le conseil qu’à la suite du dépôt du plan stratégique au printemps 2013 ». Selon un rapport soumis au conseil en mars, les frais d’entretien du site et du monument sont évalués à 20 000 $ par année. Le rapport relate : « Le comité a été clair, cette infrastructure sera transférée à la municipalité une fois terminée. La municipalité en assume donc l’entière responsabilité, tant au niveau responsabilité légale que financière ». Mais M. Fraser a dit que le comité assure que l’entretien ne coûtera rien directement aux contribuables de Hawkesbury. La compagnie Martel et Fils, qui a sculpté le monument,accepteralaresponsabilitépour lenettoyagedumonumentpourunepériode de cinq ans. L’ACFO s’occupe du replacement du drapeau franco-ontarien, qui sera le plus haut dans Prescott-Russell, a relaté M. Fraser. Le terrain requis pour ce projet de 220 000 $ est d’environ 70 pieds de longueur par une largeur de 45 pieds. La campagne de collecte de fonds a souffert à cause de la décision du conseil en mars, a dit M. Fraser. Par ailleurs, une somme de 106 000 $ a déjà été ramassée. Les conseillers Michel Thibodeau et Johanne Patenaude ont voté contre la résolution de M. Fraser, malgré leur appui pour le projet.

L’hôtel de ville était rempli d’une soixantaine de personnes. Tandis que la moitié de la foule appuyait le monument, certaines personnes applaudissaient M. Thibodeau quand il présentait son argument. Le conseiller Marc Tourangeau a décrit lemonumentcommeunoutilpromotionnel touristique et économique qui attirera les francophones du Québec. Alors que les municipalités veulent profiter de l’immigration, la ville est choyée, selon M. Tourangeau. « Ce n’est pas un débat linguistique. » En fait, « Comme une ville bilingue, Hawkesbury a un avantage sur la concurrence », a-t-il dit. Mais le maire René Berthiaume a affirmé qu’après que le conseil donne son aval, il doit continuer d’appuyer le monument. « C’est pas mal d’avoir une reconnaissance des fondateurs francophones comme on peut avoir un monument pour les anglophones », a mentionné le maire. M. chantal.quirion@eap.on.ca A LFRED Compétitions entre pompiers à Alfred, un retour attendu même que chef des pompiers d’Alfred- Plantagenet et pompier à Cornwall, se réjouit d’accueillir deux équipes de plus cette année.
Le concours d’épreuves entre pompiers revient pour une 2 e édition le samedi 16 juin à Alfred. L’an dernier, l’événement a attiré un public monstre au parc Larocque et les spectateurs ont été fort impressionnés de voir les équipes à l’œuvre. Les participants doivent libérer la ou les victimes d’une voiture accidentée le plus rapidement possible tout en respectant toutes les consignes de sécurité. Il s’agit de simulations bien sûr, ce sont des mannequins qui sont placés à l’intérieur mais les voitures sont bien réelles et posent plusieurs défis. Les pinces de désincarcération et toute l’artillerie lourde sont déployées comme s’il s’agissait d’un véritable accident. Dominic Côté, l’initiateur du projet de
