WELCOME
A REFLECTION ON THE AUTUMN HALFTERM
Welcome to the first edition of the Waldegrave Magazine which we hope will give you further insight into school life. Many staff and students have contributed to the magazine, sharing their reflections and memorable experiences of what has been a very busy half term. The start of the new school year is always abundant with new opportunities for our students to flourish and you can read about some of these in the magazine. Students new to school have enjoyed the opportunity to make new friendships and it has been wonderful to see our students in Y7 and Y12 settling into their new forms. Our GCSE and A Level students have also had an opportunity to pursue a more personalised curriculum and I have enjoyed talking to students about their option choices and hearing how much they are enjoying their subjects. Students have also had the opportunity to develop new interests and passions outside of lessons with lots of extracurricular activities taking place. Our Y11s completed their Silver DofE expeditions this half term and we have just launched the Bronze programme for our Y9 students. This term we are delighted to have created a new post for a Graduate Sports Assistant and Mr James has made a huge contribution to the PE department, running activities for all year groups. As the days draw in, it was lovely to end the half term with a Diwali celebration organised by Tanisha G in Y11, marking the festival of light. ~Ms Tongue, Headteacher .

WELCOME
Well done to all students in KS3 for a fantastic first half term, and thank you to those at home for your ongoing support. Students have embraced all the extra-curricular clubs and enrichment opportunities available to them and I really enjoyed the Y7 Thames Young Mariners trips as well as being taught British Sign Language by members of the BSL Club.
The MacMillan Coffee Morning was a highlight this term, raising money for a very worth - while cause. Students and staff alike did their part by baking some wonderful treats. As someone who is not particularly blessed in terms of culinary skills, I was very happy to support the day by eating as much as possible! Literacy continues to be a key focus around school with reading taking place in tutor time and beyond, and staff are sharing books they are currently reading with their classes. The use of chromebooks to support the learning of students continues to be a key learning focus. Many students in Y7 have recently received their chromebook and a new trolley of spare machines will be made available for students in Y7 and Y8 without their own device.

WELCOME
This half term I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know and see our Y10 and Y11 students reflect the values of our school: ‘enjoy, achieve and empower’, through a wide variety of different experiences. There was lots of enjoyment at our Macmillan Coffee Morning as we raised money for a worthy cause. I am incredibly proud of the very generous charitable response shown by Y10 and Y11 towards collections for the Give Up Clothes for Good campaign and the local food bank respectively. We have had empowering speeches delivered by Y10 through the Jack Petchey workshop on a range of topics that has made us all reflect and learn. Y11 House captains have shown great leadership by stepping up to the mantle in organising and leading events such as the House assemblies. The abundance of teamwork and leadership continued through the extra curricular team sports and silver Duke of Edinburgh challenge. Added to this there has been the huge number of epraise points awarded by staff to KS4 students, and a healthy competition already set up with each form aiming to be top of the leaderboard. Each time the hard work, resilience and cooperation with others has allowed our KS4 students to flourish. It is with this in mind that I would encourage all Y10 and Y11 students to step into the next half term, determined to be the best version of themselves so they can enjoy, achieve and continue to empower themselves and others as part of the Waldegrave community. ~Mrs Dhir, Head of Key Stage 4

WELCOME
The start of a new academic year is always a time of both great excitement and enormous challenge. That dichotomy is especially pronounced for our Y12 students, for whom the start of a new phase of their education presents the opportunity to make new friends and devote themselves to the subjects they are most passionate about, whilst also posing the joint challenges of adjusting to the standard of work expected at A Level and settling into a new routine after a long summer holiday.
Although the Sixth Form is a more familiar environment to our Y13 students, I am sure they will also have approached their final year with the same blend of enthusiasm and trepidation, as they make decisions about their next steps and work towards their final exams. I have been enormously proud of the manner in which both year groups have managed the difficulties and made the most of the opportunities. There have been many highlights of this half term. In particular, it was a pleasure to meet our new Y12 cohort on their induction day in September. I have also been extremely proud of the effort, enthusiasm and commitment students have shown in their sporting endeavours. We have fielded teams in football, basketball and netball and look forward to more fixtures in the latter half of the term. Finally, I would like to congratulate the 40 students in Y13 who have already submitted their UCAS applications. I look forward to sending many more over the coming weeks! The next half term will no doubt be very busy, with a careers themed activity day planned for Y12 and mock exams for Y13, alongside the usual medley of lessons, trips and other activities.

WELCOME
The Sixth Form is really friendly and inviting and has provided a motivating space to enjoy and excel at our A-level studies. The variety of extracurriculars (basketball, journalism club, football, netball, to name a few) has been a great addition to sixth form life. In Y13, there is the opportunity to run for the Sixth Form Student Leadership Team (6SLT) made up of a Head Girl, Head Boy and Deputies. Being given a chance to organise student-led events for the sixth form has been really exciting and it is great that the school gives the students an opportunity to improve the space that we use. During my first term as Head Girl, I have been able to partake in so many amazing opportunities, from the Macmillan coffee morning to speaking in front of parents in the open mornings. These experiences have given me so much courage and helped me develop a confidence I never had before. Alongside being Head Girl, stepping into the final year of GCSEs is exciting and daunting. However, all the help and support given by teachers has reassured us and helped prepare us for our mocks. I am now really looking forward to some of the fun activities coming up such as the staff panto and the Christmas concert which will bring the school community together. Being Head Girl has been a big responsibility, and I am very grateful to the Deputy Headgirls and House Captains who I have really enjoyed working with to make these events such a success. I am excited to continue helping make memories for everyone here at Waldegrave. ~Jiayi G, Y11 Head Girl We are busy planning the Prom to reward everyone’s hard work for their A-levels, setting up a debate club, arranging World Cup sweepstakes and will sell candy canes at Christmas time, with the proceeds going to charity. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD When I first started Year 11, I thought GCSEs would be my biggest challenge. However after returning from my Silver DofE a few weeks ago, along with over 80 of my peers, I can safely say that my three day expedition was the most difficult, yet rewarding experience of the year so far. Armed with the knowledge of our practice expedition two weeks prior, including how to put up a tent, navigate, and avoid charging cows, we set off on our journey. Over the course of the three days, we weathered many challenges as a team. We packed up tents at 5am in biblical rain, walked 50+ kilometres, and dealt with too many blisters to count. However this only brought us closer, and nothing quite matched the feeling on the last day as we celebrated returning (relatively unscathed) to our families. Although there was nothing quite like hiking against the beautiful backdrop of the New Forest, some of the best moments were spent back at camp, huddled in our tents with various iterations of instant ramen and camping meals. So what did we learn from all this? Aside from core camping skills, I formed friendships with people I’d never even spoken to before DofE, and learnt that it was our differences as a group that allowed us to succeed. DofE gives you the chance to use your specific skills to aid your team, whether that be cooking, navigating or organisation, but also pushes you beyond your comfort zone. Our leaders were so encouraging (occasionally bribing us to walk with Haribos), and their knowledge was unparalleled. There was never a moment where we weren’t learning, and this was ultimately what made the entire experience so worthwhile. ~ Coroico B. 11PMU

MATHS OLYMPIAD On 28 September the annual Mathematics Olympiad for girls commenced across the country. The UK Mathematical Olympiad for Girls is a fantastic opportunity for our bright mathematicians to test their knowledge and skills, with the chance of being selected to engage in training and join the team for the European Girls Maths Olympiad. We are thrilled to have had five of our students from varying year groups take on this challenge, our youngest contender being Clemence P. in Y9 as well as Catherine P (Y11), Amara C, Hannah D and Emma S (all Y13). Well done for all your amazing efforts and hard work put into this Maths Olympiad!
We were lucky enough to have a spectacular dance of celebration organised and choreographed by Tanisha G, which was performed on 19 October, ahead of Diwali as it fell within half term. The costumes, stage decorations and atmosphere were amazing and all of the students and staff who attended were blown away by the performance. It was wonderful to see so many students and teachers there supoporting this brilliant event. A huge well done to all of those involved and a happy Diwali!

The Jack Petchey Award is a speaking challenge that celebrates young people’s achievements. The challenge centres around young minds speaking out about different topics that are personal and interesting to them. “We were given plenty of useful tips about writing and performing a speech. We found out about the award and how it can help you in your life and how critical speaking skills are. We practised talking to others about ourselves as well as asking questions about our peers. We then did an improvisation session, before scripting and rehearsing our final speeches to deliver to the group. Despite my initial nervousness I thought this was an amazing experience!” ~ Lia H. 10PGC “At the start of the workshop I was really nervous and reluctant to present a speech. However, knowing everyone was in the same boat gave me confidence to perform my speech successfully. This workshop helped tremendously to improve my confidence when public speaking- the tips and tricks given were really helpful! “We were given tips for when you’re nervous such as making hand gestures instead of fiddling or making eye contact around the room instead of looking at the floor. We learnt about writing a speech effectively and using techniques like having an attention grabbing opening or choosing a topic that many people can relate to easily. ROTARY YOUNG CHEF COMPETITION
The Rotary Young Chef Competition returned to Waldegrave after an absence of three years and our students certainly rose to the challenge.
The competitors were tasked with preparing and cooking a two-course meal for two people at a cost of £15, within two-hours. The students had to consider planning, costing, healthy choice of dishes, neatness of work and hygiene - not just how their food looked and tasted. Lead judge Thomas Rowlandson, head chef and joint owner of A Cena restaurant in East Twickenham was impressed by the high standard and emphasis on healthy cooking across all the competitors.
Joined by students from Twickenham Academy, this was the first stage, in a five- stage National competition and the overall winner will receive an all-expenses paid holiday in Tuscany and a training day in a Michelin starred restaurant. 14

A huge congratulations to Nicole B who wowed the judges with her menu and won first place. Second place went to Sabaa Q and third to Joudy K. Nicole and Sabaa have progressed to the District Semi Final which takes place in January 2023. We are sure they won’t have any trouble finding volunteers to taste their menus as they prepare for the event!

SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING The Sixth Form opened its doors to nearly a thousand people for the Open Evening last month. This is an important opportunity for prospective students and their families to come and see our fantastic facilities, meet students and teachers, and find out what Waldegrave has to offer. We had nearly 200 student ambassadors showcasing our subjects - including Music giving a recital, Sociology setting up a crime scene, Fashion giving a machine demonstration, PE interacting with a skeleton to discuss the human body and Chemistry demonstrating an explosive experiment! Waldegrave Sixth Form is so much more than exam results - our vision is to ensure our students enjoy a love of learning, achieve their aspirations and are empowered to become the leaders of, and contributors to, a better society. We were very proud of how all of our students represented the school - they couldn’t have been better advertisements.

PERFORMING ARTS
MUSIC SWEDISH CHOIR On Saturday 1 October, the Chamber Choir were thrilled to welcome back the choir from the Brunnsbo Musiklasser on their first visit to the UK since the pandemic. Hosted by the amazing Swedish Church situated just off the Edgware Road, both choirs met for the first time just two hours before putting on a joint concert. The choirs performed their own pieces as well as coming together for three joint performances - one of which was in Swedish! All members of the Chamber Choir rose to the challenge of speed learning a new language and sang with gusto the Swedish song Vem Kam Segla. Many thanks to all who came and supported the concert despite all the transport challenges on the day.

ANTIGONE AT REGENTS PARK Y13 Drama students went to see Antigone in Regents Park Open Air Theatre on 22 September. The production was a modernised
version of the Greek classic and was very useful in giving students some creative ideas for staging, as well as helping to understand the plot of the play. Students who also study English found the production useful as it was closer to the play Home Fires with a modern look at racism and islamophobia. Some of the chorus were presented as the youth of today which made it feel as though the performers were speaking to them. Other chorus lines were allocated to an actor who looked and acted like Dominic Cummings so helped to clarify the aim of the play that everyone should question those in power.
TWELTH NIGHT THEATRE VISIT
“Twelth Night was an excellent production, helping us as the students to understand the Shakespearean humour that may have originally gone over our heads. It was engaging, hilarious, and had the audience in hysterics when Ms Clarke and Ms Goodman were brought onstage to be part of the production. It was truly wonderful!” - Zizi M. 11PMU

It has been a fantastic first half term of school for our incredible Y9 Netball team, taking on other local schools in matches and tournaments. There have been some great highlights this term and we would like to applaud everyone on the squad for their hard work and dedication to Netball. The team started the term with an incredible first game on 15 September against Hampton High, beating them by 11-2. We had a great game on 6 October when we took on Turing House, only letting in two goals right at the end of the game. We came out victorious with a winning score of 32-2! Everyone was really versatile this match, playing at least two positions. A special well done goes out to Ellie for scoring goals in her debut as GA! Another great match took place on 13 October, when our squad took on Teddington. We were delighted to give some new players the opportunity to make their debut, including Ursula, Maya and Addie. The second quarter saw the team draw away, a lead that Teddington could never catch back up. We also saw some superb shooting by Anya who went on to be named player of the match! Well done team for another victory, beating our rivals 17-9. The fun doesn’t stop there for our Y9 Netball team, as they took on their first tournament on 14 October at LEH. After losing their first two games against other schools in the Richmond Borough, they worked hard to pull themselves back up the rankings, beating Teddington and Orleans Park, and drawing with Christs. They all did amazingly, in particular Anya (9PCL) who was named player of the tournament, finishing in 5th place. 21
It has been nothing but joy and victory for our Y10/Y11 Netball team this half term, as they have performed exceptionally well throughout all their games! Their first match was against Hampton High and it was definitely an easy battle as the squad shot to victory with an impressive 23 goals, whilst only letting their opponents sneak in 1 point. The team’s next challenge was the Richmond Borough Tournament, which was hosted at Grey Court on 28 October. They played fantastically, winning all of their pool games against RTS, Orleans Park, Christs and RPA, reaching the semi finals. Unfortunately we narrowly missed out on the final due to a last minute goal from LEH in extra time, finishing the match 8-7 to LEH. Our team finished 3rd overall and the players should all be very proud of their performance! Everyone played exceptionally well at this tournament, but it was Anna M. who was awarded player of the tournament. There was no rest for our Y10/Y11 squad as the games kept on coming, taking on Twickenham only one day after their tournament, on 29 October. We only let in 3 goals this match, coming out victorious with an overall score of 23-3. Player of the match was again awarded to Anna M. We had another fantastic game on 6 October, this time taking on Turing House. Our team beat their goal scoring record this season with an amazing 27 goals, finishing the match on 27-6. Well done to Flo who received player of the match! When we thought the team couldn’t get any better they proved us wrong, beating their record again, scoring 30 goals across the 4 quarters against Teddington on 13 October. They kept Teddington to their 2 goals from the first quarter, winning 30-2! Congratulations once again to our star player Anna, being awarded player of the match. Y10/Y11 NETBALL

SIXTH FORM NETBALL The Sixth Form Netballers had a fantastic start to their season, winning the opening tournament against five other schools from across the borough. The squad of 10 really pulled together and kept their level of Netball high despite challenging weather conditions! The team won all their games except their final game against Christs, fighting back from a few goals down to finish the game 8-7 to Christs. However, the team’s hard work and great shooting in their other matches meant that they won the tournament overall on goal difference. Well done to the whole squad!
Our Y10 Badminton team participated in the U15 RSSP Badminton tournament on 3rd October. Well done to the five students who were involved, Aleena C, Mia B-D, Amy H-J, Masooma K, and Roya L-A, for achieving 3rd place! They all did fantastically at this tournament and we are very impressed and proud with how well they all played. BADMINTON

Y7/Y8 FOOTBALL Our Y7/Y8 Footballers have really stolen the spotlight this half term, though they have only participated in 3 matches, they have been an incredible 3 games, taking victory in every match! Our first football fixture of the school year started with us hosting Twickenham School on 27 September. What was scheduled to be a 9 a-side match quickly changed, as after a last minute discussion with Twickenham’s coach we decided to play a 11 a-side game, giving more girls the opportunity to play the game. Even knowing this team’s strengths, I was surprised just how dominant they were from start to finish. Our team made us proud by beating Twickenham 9-0, not letting them even get a shot at our goal. There were many excellent performances, but the two that stood out were Mia N who, as captain of our team, led by example by not only working hard but also scoring two goals and assisting two, and Isla K who scored a hatrick. The remaining goals were scored by Grace, Lottie, Marielle and Kiera. Well done team! Our team had their first away game at Richmond Upon Thames School on 4 October. The first half of the match was tough, RTS made themselves very difficult to play against and it came to halftime on 0-0. However, in the second half the team played fantastically, scoring 3 goals and not conceding. The team captain Mia N. who scored the first goal was voted by RTS as the player of the match. On 10 October, we took on Turing House, and the team didn’t fail to disappoint. Our footballers played fantastically, scoring 5 goals and not conceding the whole game. Turing House voted for our team captain Mia N. to be awarded player of the match, with this being her third match running of scoring. Well done to everyone, you’ve all been phenomenal out there on the field, we are so proud of your winning streak, keep up the amazing teamwork!

SIXTH FORM FOOTBALL
Congratulations to our boys Football team who played for the first time on 17 October, against Turing House. It was an extremely competitive match with the game ending on a win for Waldegrave, after scoring three goals and conceding two. Great sportsmanship was shown by both teams.
It’s been a good start to the Basketball season for our sixth Form squad who had their first ever league game on 26 September against St. Andrews. Our team was off to a great start as the scores were even at the end of the second quarter. They pulled away in the third quarter, we made a comeback in the fourth quarter but unfortunately couldn’t quite catch them, losing 38-28. Great efforts from our team, well done! SIXTH FORM BASKETBALL
It continued to be a close call, as we had our second game the following day, 27 September, against Epsom College. The game was tough, and the team played exceptionally well, however we just missed out on a victory as the game closed on a score of 27-31, Epsom taking the win. After a two week rest, our Basketball squad was back on the court to take on Hampton. It was a very tough and close game. Our boys played with commitment, passion and fought to the very end, but ufortunately lost 28-32.

BUSH THEATRE
Our A-Level English Literature students were invited to the showing of Waleed Akhtar’s new play ‘The P Word’ at Bush Theatre. Here is what Y13 student Ruby M. thought about the show: “Waleed Akhtar’s ‘The P Word’ is a stunning exploration of identity and reconciliation with the past. The play follows two gay men with Pakistani heritage, Bilal who was born in Britain but prefers Billy, and the other, Zafar, who is seeking Asylum due to his father finding out about his sexuality which led to the murder of his lover.
We witness their lives apart through the use of a split, rounded stage and then we watch their lives start to intertwine. Gradually, we see each other’s influence on their values and beliefs, until the climax where loyalty is tested and truths are realised. The audience is given what they have been desiring for the last 30 minutes: a satisfying ending to the classic ‘will they, won’t they’ trope. However, Waleed Akhtar refuses to let the audience live in a fairytale, resulting in a profound exploration of identity and humanity. ‘What would you stop at to help the people you love most?’ This quote from Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie perfectly illustrates the heart of these works. However, falling in love in a country that would prefer to prohibit it, forces these characters to go to extreme lengths. The discussions of nationality and identity echoes the challenges that the characters in Home Fire face in regards to their identity and specifically their British nationality. However, perhaps the most poignant connection lies in the idea of multiple Britians within Britain. How you are perceived and your history determines which Britain you live in and unless you distance yourself from your identity and pander to the ‘White Gaze’ that Britain will remain hostile: an enemy rather than a friend.”

THAMES YOUNG MARINERS
The annual Year 7 visits to the Thames Young Mariners Outward Bounds centre took place over four days in September. Each visit consisted of two form groups with the aim of the day being for the students to get to know each other a bit better, try something new and have some fun. At the morning rendezvous, the crisp September air told us that the seasons were on the turn from summer to autumn but thankfully, we struck lucky with the sunshine and it was a pleasant stroll from the meeting point at the Teddington Lock footbridge to the Thames Young Mariner Centre in Ham. Once there, our students embarked on three activities: kayaking on the beautiful lake, building and then riding rafts (with varying degrees of success), and working as a team to solve a series of physical challenges. I was impressed by the enthusiasm shown by all of our students as they threw themselves into the activities, and sometimes into the lake, with gusto! We were delighted to receive extremely positive feedback about our students from the Thames Young Mariners staff at the end of each visit and the days provided a chance for the students to do something out of the ordinary and more importantly, an opportunity to build new friendships with their classmates. E.G.X VIDEOGAME CONFERENCE In order to enhance our students’ understanding of one of the key components of the A Level Media Studies examination, our Y12 Media students were fortunate to attend the EGX gaming conference at the Excel centre. Students are expected to have detailed knowledge concerning the working practices of the videogame industry and this was an exciting opportunity to spend time talking with professionals, hearing talks from industry experts, as well as the gamers themselves. They had the chance to interact with world renowned game creators and experience first-hand what makes successful game design, as well as gaining an essential source of advice on starting a career in the games industry. And naturally they could play a vast array of video games from retro cabinet games right up to the next generation multi - player and multi-sensory games.

KEW GARDENS GCSE ART TRIP Our Y10 GCSE Art students visited the Palm Houses and Shirley Sherwood Gallery at Kew Gardens to collect valuable information for their first piece of coursework. The sun shone brightly over our students as they attended this fantastic opportunity. They produced some incredible sketches whilst at Kew Gardens, which has resulted in some fantastic coursework for their portfolios.

The school held a Macmillan coffee morning on 28 September and it was our first whole school House event of the year. Staff and students from all years came and contributed by baking all sorts of sweet treats for the rest of the school to buy! Each house had their own decorated area of the Hall with tables piled high with cakes and cookies. All the different sections stood out, not only were the tables and house captains wearing house colours, but many bakers had decorated their cakes and cookies in either yellow, red, green or purple to match the houses.

During the day, the entire hall was filled with so many delicious baked goods and at the end of the school day, the entire stage was filled with Tupperware that students had brought them in with! Everyone had so much fun whether they were buying a cake or helping out with the set-up. Everyone did such an amazing job to raise over £1000 pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support; the house captains selling the cakes, the staff who helped with the set-up and tidy up at the end, but most importantly all the fabulous student bakers who created so many irresistible and beautiful cakes. The House Captains are all looking forward to running more successful events like the coffee morning over the rest of the school year!

Our recent Scholastic book fair was a huge success giving our students an opportunity to browse and buy. There were over 200 titles for them to choose from and with prices starting from only £2.99 there were books for everyone. The students were excited to see most of Sue Wallman’s books there, especially her most recent title ‘ Such A Good Liar ’. Sue is the Librarian at Teddington School and her thrillers are among the most popular books in the school library. ‘ Your Turn To Die ’ was voted one of our favourites last year. Students bought over £750 of books raising over £390 in rewards allowing us to purchase free books for our school library ensuring that our students have access to the most up to date and popular reads. Mia in 9PBE said: “I really liked the book fair. It had a great selection of books. I would love it if they did this at school again.”

On Thursday 20 October, we saw the school bathed in a sea of pink as our Y7 students ‘wore it pink’ in a special Pink Mufti Day, ahead of national Wear it Pink Day taking place on Friday 21 October. We were so delighted with how many students and staff members got involved. So far we have raised £289. Our fundraiser is still open for donations, if you want to donate please do so through our charity fundraiser page.

PRE-LOVED UNIFORM SALE Thank you to everyone who supported our Pre-loved Uniform Sale that took place on 24 September. The turnout was amazing, and because of all your support we raised a whopping £800! A huge thank you to the great bunch of parents who stood out in the cold, selling and sorting uniform - Sam, Katie, Victoria & Rachel – and special thanks to Lacey in Year 9. Our next uniform sale is set to take place on 3 December.
NIGHT
The Annual Y7 Bingo Night was once again PHENOMENAL! The Bingo was amazing, the pizzas were superb, and the craic was mighty! We really hope that everyone who came along had a super evening and hope they will support other PTA events through the year. We raised almost £2,000 thanks to the hard work and commitment of other parents. Special thanks to Sarah Proctor-Lane (and her family) for the best Bingo-calling & Bingo jackets ever. Thank you to Victoria and Matt who coordinated the 144 pizzas from Pizza Firenze including recycling the boxes! Thank you to all the volunteers on the night who made it happen (and apologies if I miss any): Meg, Paul, Will, Mark, Catherine, Catherine, Emma & Fiona. Thank you also to our Headteacher Ms Tongue, Assistant Head Mrs Dhir and our Assistant Head & PTA Link, Ms Lane, for all her ongoing help & support behind the scenes, especially in promoting the event.
