Mardi, après la diffusion par Radio-Ca- nada des détails de ces deux poursuites, Calypso a répondu pour chacune d’elles. D’abord, concernant la demande de Ka- therine Noah, une résidente d’Ottawa de 20 ans qui réclame 1,75 million$ pour avoir été blessée il y a deux ans après avoir été éjectée d’une glissade, Calypso répond: «Pour ce qui est de la requête Noah, nos renseignements indiquent qu’il s’agit d’une chute accidentelle qui aurait eu lieu à la fin de la glissade et aurait causé des égra- tignures au dos. Les dommages demandés sont totalement disproportionnés.» Concernant l’autre poursuite, celle-là de 225 000$, déposée en mai dernier par une résidente de North Kawartha pour des blessures subies au visage et à la tête dans la piscine à vagues en 2010, l’entreprise affirme ce qui suit : «Il est allégué que cet incident s’est produit il y a quatre ans, au- delà du délai de prescription de deux ans. Durant ses quatre années d’opérations, de nombreux enfants et adultes ont fréquenté notre piscine à vagues en toute sécurité.» Trois semaines d’audience sont prévues en septembre pour débattre de ces alléga- tions. That has police worried about what the final year-end to- tal might be for 2014. The OPP’s provincial traffic statistics for the year show that the number of speed-re- lated fatal accidents in the province for the past six months is double compared to the same period last year. Speed has bumped impaired driving and distracted driving out of the running for top spot on the accident factor list. “Last year speed was a factor in more than 11,000 collisions we investigated, so there is no question that speed threatens the safety of all road users,” stated Deputy Commis- sioner Brad Blair. During the past six-month period from January to June, fatal accidents on OPP-pa- trolled roads claimed 113 lives. Speed was the primary factor for 33 of those deaths, distracted driving for 24, and alcohol for the remaining dozen. Last year the OPP across the province filed almost 300,000 speeding charges, with close to 3000 of them involving speeds in excess of 50 kilometres per hour along posted routes. Police urge both speeding drivers to slow down and also that other more responsible drivers report when they see someone breaking the speed limit.

Communauté aux traditions bien éta- blies, Vankleek Hill a reçu, pour une 18e an- née, son défilé de chevaux et d’attelages au cœur du village. Les groupes se sont ensuite rejoints sur le terrain d’exposition, pour la délicieuse dégustation de shortcake aux fraises, accompagné d’une généreuse por- tion de crème glacée. Les bonnes odeurs et les rires se mêlaient aux douceurs de l’été. Près d’une soixantaine de stations et plus d’une centaine de personnes composaient le défilé, dont certains cavaliers et montures du Québec. Certains visiteurs sont eux aussi venus d’assez loin, quelques-uns de Saint- Sauveur, notamment, pour apprécier cette activité annuelle qui contribue au charme du petit village.
Le shortcake aux fraises et les chevaux, un mariage parfait à Vankleek Hill. Addison Larocque dévore sa part des yeux.
Certains ont pris grand soin d’agencer leur tenue à l’époque de leur carriole.
Les attelages étaient aussi nombreux que variés.

The president of le Conseil communautaire du Collège Alfred (CCCA) emphasized that his group is working hard with officials from both La Cité collégiale and Boréal Collège on plans to keep Alfred College open and operating as a post-secondary institution focused on agricultural science and research and ser- ving the needs of its student body, both “francophones and Francophiles”. Earlier this year the University of Guelph, Alfred College’s parent institution, an- nounced plans to close down both its Alfred and Kemptville campuses as part of budge- tary operation cutbacks. Concern and pro- tests from community leaders in Prescott- Russell and other parts of Eastern Ontario have brought the provincial government stop the spread of those already here. Over the course of the summer, the Inva- sive Species Hit Squad, comprised of about 25 summer students, will monitor more than 200 local lakes, waterways and forests, looking for zebra mussels, spiny water flea, round goby, giant hogweed, garlic mustard, and other invaders. They will also contribute to a variety of efforts to control the spread of these invaders. Funding is being provi- ded by the federal government’s Canada Summer Jobs program. Appel à la mobilisation pour les femmes d’Alfred

Il y avait le maire du canton d’Alfred- Plantagenet, Jean-Yves Lalonde, Judith Pari- sien (du Phénix), Monique Lalonde (UCFO), Ann Gauthier-Jones (Centre de service à l’emploi de Prescott et Russell), Rachel Car- dinal et Émilie Bertrand (Bizness portal), et Manon Bédard (Clinique juridique popu- laire de Prescott). Mme Vancaemelbeke a dressé un bilan des statistiques sur les femmes franco- phones versus les femmes en général en Ontario. Dans les statistiques qu’elle a abordées, on y découvrait notamment que plus de femmes francophones de l’Onta- rio (20,5%) ont un revenu sous le seuil de pauvreté comparativement à 11,6% chez les femmes de l’Ontario (en général). Son analyse révèle aussi que les salaires des rési- dents d’Alfred sont nettement plus bas que la moyenne de la région de l’Est ontarien. Elle a comparé ces statistiques avec celles qu’elle a compilées avec des données sur les 1350 résidents du canton d’Alfred. Elle a fait ressortir que la plupart des or- ganismes qui desservent la région d’Alfred sont basés à Hawkesbury, ce qui fait en sorte que l’aide est plus difficile à obte- nir pour les résidents d’Alfred. «Les jeunes quittent la région pour aller étudier et trou-

Celle que plusieurs connaissent comme étant la présidente du Club Toastmaster est notamment venue partager, avec des acteurs socio-économiques de la région, les résultats de l’enquête qu’elle mène actuellement pour le compte de l’Union culturelle des Francos-Ontariennes (UCFO). Son étude, financée par une subvention de 15 000$ venant de Condition féminine Canada, porte sur la situation socio-écono- mique des femmes d’Alfred. Ses résultats: les femmes de la communauté ont beau- coup de difficulté à joindre les deux bouts et sont isolées. Plusieurs acteurs de la communauté d’Al- fred et des organismes qui desservent la

Finalement, c’est sur une discussion avec les intervenants que la séance s’est ter- minée. L’accès à internet haute-vitesse, le manque de places en service de garderie et l’absence de transport en commun pour permettre aux résidents d’Alfred de tra- vailler à l’extérieur, ont été évoqués. «Mon but était de réunir des acteurs de la com- munauté pour les aider à mettre en place
des solutions pour améliorer le sort des femmes d’Alfred. Le but est que les interve- nants présents deviennent des partenaires pour mettre en marche une solution et que cette solution «vole de ses propres ailes», éventuellement», a confié Marianne Van- caemelbeke. Elle a également spécifié qu’à partir des trois pistes évoquées par les in- tervenants (transport, garderie et transport en commun), elle ferait des recherches et convoquerait une autre réunion pour faire cheminer le projet.
Plus de 500 personnes au déjeuner des pompiers
L’odeur des saucisses et du bacon a donné faim à de nombreux citoyens, qui se sont déplacés en grand nombre le 5 juillet à Chute-à-Blondeau, pour le déjeuner des pompiers de Hawkesbury Est, dans le cadre du Festival de la rivière des Outaouais. «C’est la troisième année et nous avons eu une centaine de personnes de plus que l’année dernière, a précisé la directrice générale du Canton de Hawkesbury Est, Linda Rozon.
Nous avons servi 463 déjeuners payants et 50 enfants, qui ont mangé gratuitement. Vraiment une belle journée et un succès.» Plusieurs personnes attablées ont fait remarquer que les assiettes étaient généreusement garnies et que le choix de fruits frais et de croissants au chocolat pour le dessert était une touche délicieuse. Le ventre bien rempli, les enfants ont également eu la chance de s’amuser dans les jeux gonflables, avant de reprendre la route pour le tournoi de pêche ou simplement pour admirer les bateaux haute performance défiler sur la rivière. Les cyclistes du Tour Charles-Bruneau ont eu droit à tout un accueil à Grenville, jeudi dernier. Les jeunes du camp de jour de la localité ont agité clochettes et pompons à l’arrivée de la jeune héroïne, Arianne Côté, qui a subi une greffe de la moelle osseuse et qui continue courageusement son combat contre la leucémie myéloblastique aiguë. La porte-parole pour le circuit de Gatineau, Luce Dufault, était du nombre et s’est dit inspirée par la force de la jeune fille qui n’a jamais douté de sa guérison. Le Tour Charles-Bruneau a dépassé son objectif de 2,75 millions $ pour l’ensemble du Québec, et les sommes serviront à la recherche en cancérologie pédiatrique.
