Snowmobilers face charges

newsroom@eap.on.ca

H AWKESBURY

Several snowmobilers were charged during an Ontario Provincial Police blitz on

trails in East Hawkesbury, Champlain and Alfred-Plantagenet and Hawkesbury.

While 13 were ticketed for speeding, two were charged with failing to have trail

passes, three with failing to have insurance and three with plate offences.

Impaired sledding charge

Responding to a complaint about a “suspicious person” riding a snowmobile on

Concession 1 in Treadwell at approximately 3 a.m. February 24, officers intercepted the

machine. Mario Lalonde, 40, of Concession 1 in Treadwell was arrested and charged

with failing to provide a breath sample. The snowmobile was towed and the accused

is facing the same consequences as if he had been driving a car intoxicated.

With the anticipated arrival of warmer temperatures over the next month, the Ontario

Provincial Police is reminding snowmobile enthusiasts to plan their routes carefully.

East Hawkesbury trims expenses

Richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca

S T -E UGÈNE

East Hawkesbury council members continue to be the most frugal in the region,

trimming their expenses and pay by about $75 last year.

In 2010, members received $44,991 in salaries and expense reimbursements. Last

year, the total was $44,915.

Mayor Robert Kirby received $10,215, including his $8,340 salary, $1,200 for

attending special meetings and $675 for other costs.

Deputy Mayor Richard Sauvé and Councillors Linda Séguin, Gabriel Dussault and

Luc Lalonde were each paid $8,675. These sums included $6,675 in salaries, $500 for

special meetings and $1,500 for convention expenses.

On behalf of everyone here at the coin show, we would like to express how excited we are to be in Hawkesbury. During our tour of Southern Ontario, we have seen an abundance of unique items coming into our shows. H AWKESBURY

“We definitely want to give back to our

hometown which has supported us over

the years and has celebratedwith us at this

exciting time. There are so many

worthwhile causes in Hawkesbury - the

food bank, the hospital - and we look

forward to sharing our good fortune.”

So said JoAnn Champagne last week as

she and her husband, Gaetan, received the

$50 million the Hawkesbury couple had

won in the December 30 Lotto Max lottery.

The Champagnes, who have two adult

children, have already made plans for their

windfall. They have purchased a new car,

put a down-payment on a new house and

invested in their son’s business, a

downtown restaurant. They also plan to

share the wealth with their community.

The prize claim was subject to Ontario

Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s Insider

Wins process as the Champagnes had each

been employed as lottery retailers within

the past year. Long-time Hawkesbury

residents, Gaetan, 51, and JoAnn, 49, have

been playing the lottery for many years, but

this was their first major win. “We found

out we won the jackpot while on our way to

celebrate the New Year. Right away, we

knew that we would be subject to a review

as part of OLG’s insider policy because we

used to own a store,” said Gaetan.

“We knew the rules and we followed
