Ils avaient organisé une journée de bat- tage. La journée avait été si populaire que les organisateurs avaient décidé de répé- ter l’expérience l’année suivante, a rappelé Francine Lauzon, qui fait partie du comité
organisateur de l’activité qui a fêté son 18e anniversaire dimanche. Rolland, 93 ans, et Lucien, 88 ans, vivent toujours sur la ferme familiale où ils ont grandi, en travaillant avec de l’équipement qui étaient exposé lors de l’événement au Centre d’action. «Cela était une bonne machine», a lancé Lucien Brisebois, faisant allusion à une presse à foin fabriquée en 1929. Avec l’aide d’un voisin, Justin Lavigne, les frères amènent leurs machines chaque année à l’exposition. Les frères conduisent encore aujourd’hui
des automobiles classiques. Lucien a une Plymouth Fury 3 1966, qui aurait franchi 1,6 million de miles. Rolland pour sa part conduit une Plymouth Volare 1976. Com- bien de miles? «Elle a fait le tour au moins deux fois», lance-t-il. L’exposition des an- tiques est parmi les événements les plus populaires de la région. «C’est grâce aux bénévoles que c’est un succès», a souligné Mme Lauzon. Encore cette année, environ 700 visiteurs ont été attirés par des collec- tions de tracteurs, de voitures, d’outils, d’en- gins et des travaux d’artisanat.

Police issue burglar alert
A warning has been issued by the Stor- mont-Dundas-Glengarry Ontario Provin- cial Police (OPP) detachment following a rash of burglaries in the district. On June 8, at 8:39 a.m., SD&G OPP offi- cers responded to a report of a break-in at a property on Main Street South, Alexandria. The home owners had observed a man leaving the residence upon their return from an outing. Cash and jewellery were taken. The suspect is described as male, 5’8”, husky build, wearing glasses and blue jacket. Between June 2 and 6, a residence on McCormick Road, North Glengarry was
forcibly entered. A water cooler, alarm clock and a train set were taken. On June 6 or 7, a home on Little Third Road in North Glen- garry Township was burglarized. The detachment urges homeowners to be proactive with the safety and security of their property with the following tips: keep landscaping in a condition that provides adequate visibility of the property and en- sure proper functioning lights; if away for extended periods of time, assign someone to look after the property; keep all locks and/or alarms updated and in proper work- ing order.

Les consultants André Goulet, de la firme Horizon Multi-res- sources, et David Sherwood, de Brunet-She- rwood, ont passé une dizaine d’heures avec la communauté «pour saisir les aspirations et les préoccupations des citoyens de Gren- ville-sur-Ia-Rouge à l’égard de ce secteur de la municipalité», selon le bulletin municipal. «Certains y voient un potentiel de déve- loppement durable pour créer des emplois, entre autres, en agriculture et en tourisme. Tous sont unanimes que le développement doit permettre de maintenir le cadre de vie
exceptionnel déjà existant. Des chemins de qualité sont exigés par tous, mais on recon- nait que des bons chemins vont augmenter l’achalandage des visiteurs.» La municipalité a décidé dernièrement de payer 12 180$ à Brunet Sherwood et 18 625$ à Horizon pour leurs services. La municipalité a déjà reçu une subvention de 10 000$ du gouvernement provincial. Le maire John Saywell a mentionné que la municipalité continue à solliciter l’appui d’autres sources. Les consultations sont prévues égale- ment pour l’automne. «De l’avis des consul-
tants, c’est un projet innovateur parce que c’est la communauté qui est interpellée en premier pour définir les grandes lignes de son avenir», selon la municipalité.

Des castors créent des problèmes sur la Rouge Un barrage de castors est à l’origine d’un affaissement sur un tronçon du chemin de la Rivière Rouge vendredi dernier. Quand le barrage a cédé, l’eau a détruit une partie du chemin. La municipalité de Grenville-sur-la-Rouge a engagé des ingénieurs afin de préparer des plans et devis pour les réparations et la stabilisa- tion des berges. Un budget de 12 000$ a été alloué pour les plans. Tentative de meurtre à Grenville Un homme a été blessé lors d’une fusil- lade vendredi soir à un bar de danseuses de Grenville. Par ailleurs, la victime ne veut pas aider la Sûreté du Québec dans l’enquête. L’homme a subi une blessure mineure après avoir été frappé par une balle quand lui et deux autres personnes étaient à l’extérieur du bar Le Cabaret sur la rue Principale. «Nous n’avons pas de plaignant», a relaté un porte-parole de la SQ, le sergent Gino Paré, expliquant que la victime refuse de collaborer avec la police. La Ville est à la recherche d’un nouveau trésorier à la suite de la démission de Chantal McLean-Leroux, qui était titu- laire du poste depuis juin 2013. Elle quit- tera officiellement ses fonctions le 23 juin afin de travailler à l’Hôpital Général de Hawkesbury. Elle avait commencé sa longue carrière en administration muni- cipale à la Ville de Hawkesbury avant d’assumer des fonctions ailleurs. Mme McLean-Leroux occupait le poste de tré- sorière pour la Cité de Clarence-Rockland avant son retour à la Ville de Hawkesbury. La municipalité a fixé au 19 juin la date limite pour recevoir des applications. «Il s’agit d’un environnement de travail exigeant», peut-on lire dans l’annonce. Le chef comptable Francine Tessier était nommé trésorière par intérim lundi soir.

FREDERICTON | The trophy case at Beau’s All Natural, the Vankleek Hill-based brewery, keeps getting crowded. Last week, the business received eight more awards, bringing to 66 the number of honours it has received since opening July 1, 2006. Beau’s won a gold medal for Lug Tread Lagered Ale and two bronze medals at the 12th annual Canadian Brewing Awards in Fredericton. This is the fourth time Lug Tread has won gold in the Kolsch category at the CBAs, and brings to 12 the total number of CBAs awarded to Beau’s since 2010. Beau’s was also honoured in Toronto at the 2014 LCBO “Elsies” awards, where it re- ceived a medal for its environmental com-
mitment and was named LCBO Small-Com- pany Supplier of the Year. These awards come on the heels of the recent announcement of the 2014 Applied Arts Magazine Awards for excellence in pac- kaging design. Beau’s was once again a win- ner in the Wine-Beer-Spirits category, for three different projects: the Lug Tread 12- pack, the past year’s Wild Oats Series beers, and the 2014 LCBO Feature Series. “It’s a great feeling to have our beer win- ning national awards, while at the same time being recognized for our outstanding marketing and business practices,” says bre- wery co-founder Steve Beauchesne. “You get a real sense that everyone at the bre- wery is giving their all, and you get inspired to keep that momentum going.”

Il est impossible de plaire à tout le monde tout le temps. Ce fait n’a jamais été plus évi- dent qu’au cours de la dernière campagne électorale dans Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. Cette circonscription est l’une des plus distinctes dans la province, avec son mélange des enjeux et préoccupations. Notre circonscription est un mélange des cultures et des langues, des secteurs urbains et ruraux, des grands centres et des petits hameaux, avec des préoccupations et enjeux différents. C’est facile de constater à quel point c’est impossible d’en arriver à un consen- sus lorsqu’il s’agit de déterminer le dossier primordial dans les trois comtés. Avec sept candidats dans cette campagne, les électeurs étaient présentés avec des idées et des principes qui couvrent l’échiquier politique. On avait les bleus, les rouges, les verts, les oranges et les libertariens, et un candidat indépendant. Un débat à Alexandria a fourni un aperçu partiel des dossiers qui préoccupent des gens dans notre coin. Par exemple, la liste des sujets abordés comprenait l’électricité, les emplois, les cultivateurs, les taxes, les pensions, les panneaux solaires, la dette provin- ciale, la crédibilité, les services pour les personnes handicapées et les personnes âgées, la santé, l’éducation, l’aide pour les entrepreneurs, le tourisme, les jeunes, les racines, les arbres, le bilinguisme, la pauvreté, le rôle du gouvernement, les droits des contri- buables, l’assurance automobile et les syndicats. On peut ajouter à cette liste les dossiers spécifiques aux groupes qui ont des inté- rêts particuliers. Par exemple, les municipalités revendiquent un changement dans la façon dont la province finance des programmes. Les Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell veulent que le gouvernement reprenne la responsabilité de la route 17, autrefois sous la juridiction de la province et maintenant un fardeau énorme pour les contribuables locaux. Également, le programme de rabais de l’impôt foncier sur les terres agricoles représente une perte annuelle de 8 millions $ pour les comtés. Et il ne faut pas oublier l’avenir du Campus d’Alfred de l’Université de Guelph. Voilà un bref sommaire de quelques questions qui préoccupent les gens et doivent se retrouver sur l’ordre du jour de notre gouvernement. Compte tenu du fait que l’Ontario est une grande province avec un grand nombre de problèmes et de priorités différents, il est facile de voir pourquoi il est difficile de plaire à tout le monde tout le temps. Par ailleurs, la tragédie a donné un nouvel élan à une campagne pour les installations d’extincteurs automatiques à eau, obligatoires dans les maisons pour les personnes âgées dans la province. Le gouvernement de l’Ontario a accéléré les démarches afin de rendre les gicleurs obligatoires dans les maisons de retraite et de foyers de soins de longue durée. Les foyers dans Prescott et Russell disent que la loi pourrait signifier une catastrophe financière pour de nombreux établissements qui ne peuvent payer l’instal- lation de nouveaux systèmes d’extinction d’incendie. Les foyers privés ont cinq ans pour se conformer tandis que les maisons du gouvernement ont 12 ans pour faire l’installa- tion. Deux poids, deux mesures. C’est bien évident que cette situation doit être réglée tout de suite. Lorsque la sécurité est en jeu, le temps n’est pas un luxe.

The cost of a system can run from $4,000 to $12,500. Most of the trouble stems from the cheaper models, the committee said, noting that better prices could be nego- tiated if home owners got together and hired one contractor to do the installation. At the same time, the finance commit- tee has considered a planning committee recommendation that a fund be set up to help people who could not afford to com- ply with the environmental regulations. The proposal is being studied by municipal administrator Jean-François Bertrand.
CALUMET | An English-language infor- mation session on septic systems will be held in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge as the municipality continues to try to resolve problems associated with inadequate sewage installations. About 60 people attended a recent in- formation meeting the municipal planning committee organized to discuss the issue. A meeting for Anglophones will be held once documents in English become avail- able. The municipality has the authority to intervene in order to ensure septic systems conform with the law. L’école Le Sommet candidate pour le BI

Une mention spéciale sera aussi inscrite sur le diplôme, résultant du cheminement des élèves inscrit au programme. Le programme visera également à faire des élèves, des citoyens éco responsables en développant leur esprit d’analyse au point de vue mondial. «La matière ensei- gnée sera la même que dans le cursus éducatif de l’école, mais sera abordée de façon plus globale avec des aspects qui touchent l’international», a indiqué la coordonnatrice du programme de BI
à l’école L’Héritage de Cornwall, Laurie Crawford. Selon elle, le programme vise à développer la curiosité et la débrouillar- dise chez les jeunes. L’apprentissage de trois langues (anglais, français et espa- gnol) fait aussi partie du programme qui s’articulera sur trois niveaux: un projet commun (8e année); un projet personnel (10e année) et la rédaction d’un mémoire de 4000 mots (11e et 12e année). Pour Mme Crawford, ce programme per- mettra aux élèves qui y adhèrent d’être acceptés dans les institutions scolaires de 136 pays. «Le programme répond à des critères très rigoureux et standardisés qui sont acceptés dans plusieurs pays. Ainsi, les élèves pourront intégrer des universi-
tés en obtenant des crédits pour certains cours qu’ils auront suivis au Sommet», nous a-t-elle dit. Si tout se déroule comme prévu, le Som- met pourrait bien recevoir rapidement son accréditation officielle au cours de l’année. Trois visites seront faites au Sommet par ceux qui autorisent le pro- gramme BI en milieu scolaire - dont une à la fin septembre et l’autre (qui durera deux jours) à la mi-octobre 2014. «D’ici là, nos professeurs seront formés pour com- mencer à donner des cours aux étudiants en septembre», a conclu Mme Saucier. It is part and parcel of MNR’s 50 Million Trees program, which aims to have that many new trees planted throughout Ontario by 2025 in an effort to increase the province’s forest cover, reduced by logging and urban development, and counter the buildup of greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide. Trees and plants take in carbon dioxide as part of their life cycle and produce oxygen. MNR’s goal is to reduce Ontario’s green- house gas overload by 6.6 megatonnes by 2050. The aim of the CCAM trial, as part of the overall 50 Million Trees Project, is to test how well particular tree species like oak deal with or adapt to climate change. The

MNR has four oak tree plantations grow- ing in other southern and eastern Ontario communities as part of its own research on climate change and control in Ontario. When the ministry approached SNC about partnering on a fifth such plantation in the South Nation River watershed, Josée Brizard, SNC forest resources technician, described it as a tailor-made idea for the re- gional conservation agency. “In our day-to-day activities and tasks, we’re always dealing with climate change,” Brizard said. “Our younger staff will be able to see the benefits and the impacts of this,

Les 101 convives ont été fort impressionnés par la taille des brochettes d’agneau, de dinde et de bœuf, parmi lesquelles ils choisissaient à leur gré les pièces leur faisant envie, et ce, jusqu’à satiété.
