SIMARD SNUBBED OR NOT? UCPR SAYS NO!

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Officials for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell deny any intent to snub MPP Amanda Simard at a recent provin- cial conference for rural municipalities. The annual Rural Ontario Municipalities Association (ROMA) conference in Toronto over the January 27 weekend saw meetings between counties delegations and provin- cial officials over issues ranging from the ambulance dispatch and debt problem with the City of Ottawa to government funding allocations to the Ontario Trillium Founda- tion. But Simard, now an independent MPP TJODFIFSEFQBSUVSFMBTU/PWFNCFSGSPN the Progressive Conservative caucus, was not invited to take part in those meetings. “There was not a lot of interest in hav- ing her come,” said Mayor Robert Kirby, current warden for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), during a Monday phone interview. i8FXFSFEFBMJOHXJUIB government that she doesn’t belong to, that she decided to leave. There was not a lot of willingness to have her present.” Simard left the PC caucus to sit as an independent, a decision prompted by the Doug Ford government’s cancellation of funding for a French-language university project, the first in Ontario, and closing down the official position of the French-language commissioner. —archives

As tradition has it, the final provincial budget plan is announced soon after the federal budget is revealed, since some of the Ontario budget calculations depend on federal fund- ing aid to the provinces. “I want to see what the priorities are,” said Simard. “It has to be common sense.” She emphasized that the first real budget GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

are the only way to get anything done for your constituents as an MPP,” she stated. “They’re suggesting that this government only allocates resources and sets priorities based on who’s in their caucus, and that opposition MPPs are ineffective, which is completely inaccurate. Case in point : we had a great representative in Jean-Marc Lalonde, who arguably did more from the opposition benches than perhaps many government MPPs.” Simard emphasized that her role and value as MPP for the GPR has not changed with her becoming an independent. “My relationships with ministers hasn’t changed, and most have been fostered over the last two years, as many of us were candidates together,” she stated. “From my experience, ministers continue to conduct themselves with integrity, not with extreme partisanship.” for the new provincial government should start reversing the past trend of cutting back on provincial aid to municipalities in areas like infrastructure and social service programs. “If anything, we should be helping them and not cutting their funding,” Simard said. “They (local governments) are the closest to the people.” She noted that a plan to help with natural gas service extensions “would be huge for us”, as both an alternative winter heating choice for homeowners and farmers in rural areas, and also as a help with local economic development promotions. Simard also wants attention in the budget for health and social service needs, especially for seniors. “Because we have an aging population,” she said, adding that rural regions like hers do not have the same kind of wide access to health and social programs as larger urban centres. i8IBU*NHPJOHUPCFXBUDIJOHJOUIJT budget,” Simard said, “is also a stop with the cutting everywhere in places where we shouldn’t be cutting (back).”

LE CERCLE GASCON II SÈME LA JOIE CHEZ LES AÎNÉS

THE MULTIFACETED NEW MISS TEEN PRESCOTT-RUSSELL 2019

ALEXIA MARSILLO alexia.marsillo@eap.on.ca

On top of being a hard-working athlete, a self-taught artist and an enthused com- munity volunteer, 14-year-old Kaleigh Allard now has one more item to add to her resume: Miss Teen Prescott-Russell 2019. The young girl from Hawkesbury was re- cently crowned Miss Teen Prescott-Russell, on her way to representing the region at the Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant in May. “I’m very lucky to have found her here in Hawkesbury,” said Lynn Gauvreau, Direc- tor of T-Era Models Canada and Kaleigh’s pageant coach. “Kaleigh really complimented everything that I was looking for and she understands my vision of being Miss Teen Prescott-Russell and how you become an ambassador and a voice for teens.” There is no doubt that Kaleigh has what it takes to be a role model for younger girls in the community. She strikes a balance between a teen- ager interested in fashion and beauty, but also in sports. She plays basketball for the Hawkesbury Selects and participates in school sports at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute. Kaleigh is also an artist – she is most interested in drawing portraits, a school that she says she taught herself. She also spends some of her free time volunteering at the Vankleek Hill Sports Club. “There are so many activities here that we can help encourage,” said Kaleigh. “I want to promote tourism in Prescott-Russell.” Diagnosed with Type I Diabetes about three years ago, Kaleigh has become more responsible than most other 14-year-olds and has had to overcome the struggles of needing to adapt her way of life. She plans on working closely with her coach to embrace her role as an ambassador representative of the region, hopefully inspiring other young girls to pursue their dreams. Kaleigh and her coach also intend to organize fundraisers and meet and greets, to both help Kaleigh raise money for the Miss Ontario East Pageant and to introduce the Miss Teen Prescott-Russell to the community, especially the youth. Anyone interested can contact Lynn Gauvreau at info@teramodels.

—photo fournie

If you’ve made it past the holidays and were able to keep the proposal a surprise, your next “special” day comes on Valentine’s Day. What better way to show someone howmuch you care than by asking them to spend the rest of their lives with you? Valentine’s Day is romantic on its own, but a proposal on Valentine’s Day makes it the best day ever. Here are some creative ways to ask your Valentine to be yours forever. 6 Romantic Ways to Propose on Valentine’s Day 1. Make it Musical 2. Keep it Cozy February isn’t the most fun time of year to be outside. Head back to a simpler time of life and treat her to a cozy soup lunch inside. Find chicken noodle soup with alphabet letters and spell “Marry Me” in her bowl. She’ll be so excited, she’ll forget all about lunch! 3. Chill Out While February is usually cold, it can be a really 5. Be A Kid Again One of the best parts of Valentine’s Day at school was finding your valentine “mailbox” stuffed full of notes and candy from your classmates. Ask her friends and family to send you valentine notes from all over the country and stuff them in a box for her to open on Valentine’s Day. She’ll feel so loved, she won’t even see what’s coming: the last note, from you, with a ring. 6. Be Sweet

We’ve seen the popularity of flashmob proposals rise, and you can get in on the action. Choose a song that means something to her, or to you both, and lip-sync along with the music as you and her friends, family, coworkers, and even an innocent bystander or two chime in to make the most romantic production ever. Get on one knee at the end, and she’ll be dying to say yes. Bonus tip: If a big production isn’t your thing, hire a singing telegram service to show up at her work or home with a song and flowers, while you get on one knee behind her to surprise her after the tune with a ring!

beautiful time of year if some snow has just fallen. Head outside for an unassuming walk in the park, and have your question spelled out in the powdery snow for her to find. 4. The Bait and Switch Who doesn’t love candy? Buy a box of chocolates, remove one from the tray and replace it with the ring. She may be a little miffed that all she got was candy, at least until she opens the box for the real surprise! Joyeuse Saint-Valentin Happy St-Valentine’s Day À tous nos résidents et employés. to our residents and staff.

If your yearly tradition includes going out for a nice dinner on Valentine’s Day, have the pastry chef prepare a special treat just for her. Have a cake made with “Will YouMarry Me?” written in frosting, or have the waiter present a special dessert “menu” with all of her favorites, the last of them being “spending your life with me.”

Be my Valentine

Whether you’ve only been on a couple of dates or you’ve spent every day together for the last two months, Valentine’s Day can be uncomfortable when you’ve just started dating someone. However, it doesn’t have to be an awkward event. As long as the two of you talk to each other about your expectations, Valentine’s Day can be a hassle-free affair. BROACHTHE TOPIC It’s never too early to learn to communicate with your new partner. If you see a future with this person, you should talk to themabout your expectations and hopes for Valentine’s Day. Bringing up the topic can be as simple as asking, “how do you feel about Valentine’s Day?” FIGURE IT OUT TOGETHER The two of you should decide howyou’d like to celebratemark the occasion. Nomatterwhat you decide, don’t go overboard. If you choose to buy each other presents, decide on a budget and stick to it. If you don’t want to exchange gifts but still want to do something, cook dinner together and have a quiet evening in. Navigating thewaters of your first Valentine’sDay together canmake or break you as a couple. If it goeswell, you could be starting a tradition that will last for years to come. How to navigate Valentine’s Day when you’ve just started dating

Four things to avoid cooking on Valentine’s Day

Have you offered to make somebody you love a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner but aren’t the best cook? While there are countless recipes out there for people who aren’t adept in the kitchen, here are four meals you’ll definitely want to avoid serving. 1. Anything too spicy: some people love spicy foods like curries, chilies and anything covered with hot sauce, but for the uninitiated, these foods can cause major stomach issues that could put an early end to your romantic evening. 2. Anything that requires a bib: lots of people love to crack into a lobster or crab, but eating these shellfish can be in- credibly messy. If you’re going to go the seafood route, serve themeat without the shells.

3. Anything too heavy: you might be tempted to serve a robust dish you knowyour sweetiewill love like steak and potatoes. However, eating a heavymeal is more likely to put your love interest to sleep than it is to put him or her in the mood for romance. 4. Anything too complicated: while you might love the idea of making a cheese soufflé or French macaroons, the truth is that these dishes are extremely finicky, even for an experienced chef. It’s best to leave these recipes for a night when there’s less at stake. You don’t need to be fancy to impress your date. The important part is spending some time together, even if itmeans orde- ring a pizza after you’ve burned the chicken.

Bonne Saint-Valentin! Happy Valentine’s Day!

during a later interview. “But competing in my hometown, oh man! Just seeing the people cheering for me.” Black himself held up Myre’s arm in the victory call, declaring that the Hawkesbury hero had won the match fair and square. But then, Black proved treacherous with an after-the-match blow to Mathis, knocking him down before the Québec wrestler escaped to the dressing room area. Myre recovered and posed for the chee- ring crowd before leaving the ring himself and heading for the dressing area, making way for the final match of the night, a kickboxing exhibition fight between GNW’s own Devon “Hannibal” Nicholson and Eric “The Black Dragon” Chibuluzo of Toronto. Three rounds of kicks and punches later, Hannibal was declared the winner.

“Feels good,” Nicholson said during a later interview. “I think I needed another two rounds in the match to finish him off. I would like a rematch. If I had another two rounds, I could get a knockout.” On other cards that night, GNW women’s champion Lady Yasmine lost her belt to challenger Jessica Black; GNW Canadian champ The Green Phantom defended his title against Isaiah Bronson; Max Testosterone beat the Bruiser in a no-disqualification street match despite the Bruiser getting some unofficial tag-team help from his friend, Pretty Boy Davis; GNW World Television champion Nathan Banner kept his title on a technicality against Jeremy Prophet; and Harley Davidson of Sturgis, South Dakota, beat Hardcore McD of Smiths Falls, Ontario, in a non-title bout.

It looked bad for Mathis Myre at the start but the young Hawkesbury wrest- ler triumphed in the end in front of a cheering hometown crowd. Saturday night, over the February 2 weekend, snow was blowing outside of École secondaire publique Le Sommet in Hawkesbury. Inside, in the gymnasium, Mathis Myre faced Xavier Black from Lachine, Québec, in the penultimate match on the card for the evening’s GNW (Great North Wrestling) Satur- day Wrestling Spectacular, and managed to pin his opponent to the mat during the final seconds before the bell. “I’m pretty sore,” said Myre, smiling,
