Some banks have even modified a few of their automatic banking machines to allow bitcoin owners to draw on their bitcoin accounts, receiving the equivalent amount in local currency. Police now have reports of a «Bitcoin scam» where people receive anonymous emails warning that malware has captured their password. The email does include the «kidnapped password» that most victims of the scam recognize as an old password they no longer use. The sender of the email then claims to have an alleged video of the victim using the password to visit pornographic sites. The con artist threatens to release the video to the victim’s own list of email contacts if a specific amount of bitcoin currency is not
Cryptocurrency may some day become the future of money and police are warning about a new futuristic scam involving bitcoins. The Ottawa Police Service issued an advisory for the region after getting several complaints about a new email scam that targets anyone who buys, sells and trades in bitcoins. Bitcoins are a form of virtual money, now used as a growing method of currency exchange between some people through their computers. Bitcoins are recognized as legitimate currency in the global banking system, with an exchange rate to other

Now that the deadline has passed for municipal candidates to present themselves, some candidates have already been elected by acclamation, while others have gained some new competition. Mario Zanth and Carl Grimard have both been reelected by acclamation in the 3PDLMBOE BSFB GPS8BSE BOE8BSE respectively. This will be a second consecutive man- date for both councillors. Also returning to the municipal council table is André J. Lalonde, who also ran unopposed. Lalonde XJMMSFQSFTFOU8BSEPGUIFNVOJDJQBMJUZ which covers the Clarence Creek area. The Clarence-Rockland municipal council has also gained a newcomer. Christian 4JNBSEXBTFMFDUFECZBDDMBNBUJPOGPS8BSE 6 of the municipality, which covers the Saint- Pascal-Baylon area. This seat is presently occupied by his wife, Councillor Krysta Simard, who made the decision to take a step back from politics. This will be Christian Simard’s first actual direct experience in dealing with municipal politics. Mayor Guy Desjardins will be seeking another term in the upcoming elections in October, but not without opposition. Donald Veilleux has thrown his hat into the ring for the mayor position.

Suspects call residents advising that if they do not pay owed money they can be arrested. This summer a Limoges area woman was contacted by a “CRA officer” advising there were four allegations and that she would be brought to court. The complainant then received a call from what she believed to be the OPP’s local number. Suspects posed as a police officer demanding her SIN number. The OPP confirms that they would not make such calls and advises residents to not give out personal information. 150 AVERTISSEURS DE FUMÉE À C-R Le Service des incendies de Clarence-Rockland a reçu 150 avertisseurs de fumée et de monoxyde de carbone combinés dans le cadre du projet Zéro : une campagne d’information du public qui fournit plus de 6600 détecteurs aux résidents de 30 municipalités de l’Ontario. More than half a dozen small-scale “green energy” projects may not be going ahead as planned in Alfred- Plantagenet Township because of a mass cancellation of alternate energy contracts by the new Progressive Conservative government. The lights went out for 758 renewable energy projects in Ontario when Greg Rick- GPSE UIFOFX.JOJTUFSPG&OFSHZ /PSUIFSO Development and Mines, announced July 13 that the Progressive Conservative govern- ment was cancelling their contracts. The decision follows up on an election campaign promise of Doug Ford, Ontario’s new premier, to reduce Hydro rates by 12 per cent through a variety of cost-cutting measures. All of the projects listed in the mass- cancellation of contracts had not yet reached their “project development milestones” according to the government news release. Both Rickford and Ford have claimed the can- celled contracts represent $790 million in combined savings for all Ontario ratepayers on their electricity costs. Rickford also stated that the government will introduce legislation to protect ratepayers from the costs of any legal fallout from the contract cancellations. Plusieurs poissons apprécient les bouillons provoqués par les évacuateurs du barrage. Il se trouve donc toujours des pêcheurs téméraires qui font fi des avertis- sements. Ils mettent ainsi leur vie en péril, d’autant que les opérations de secours s’avèrent plus difficiles à ces endroits. Certains plaisanciers curieux ont aussi tendance à s’approcher de la centrale lorsque les turbines sont arrêtées et que l’eau est calme. Toutefois, il est important de savoir que ces turbines peuvent se remettre en marche à tout moment. L’estacade se présente donc comme un outil supplémen- taire de prévention. Hydro-Québec abaissera temporaire- ment le niveau d’eau de la rivière des Outaouais en amont de la centrale de Carillon. Du 7 au 24 août, des travailleurs et des plongeurs s’affaireront à l’installation d’une estacade permanente en aval du barrage. Cet ouvrage de protection a pour but de signaler la présence d’une zone à risque pour les plaisanciers et les pêcheurs. Pour assurer la sécurité des travailleurs lors des travaux, le niveau de la rivière des Outaouais sera temporairement abaissé entre les municipalités de Saint-André-d’Ar- genteuil et Gatineau. Cet abaissement qui aura lieu sur semaine seulement pourrait varier entre 10 et 25 centimètres. Hydro- Québec rassure les plaisanciers en affirmant que le niveau d’eau permettra la navigation en tout temps sur la rivière.

Hydro-Québec will temporarily lower the water level of the Ottawa River upstream of the Carillon generating station. From August 7 to August 24, workers and divers are working on the permanent installation downstream of the dam. This protection work aims to indicate the presence of a risk zone for boaters and fishermen. To ensure the safety of workers during construction, the level of the Ottawa River will be temporarily lowered between the municipalities of Saint-André- d’Argenteuil and Gatineau. The lowering, takinhg place Monday to Friday, could vary between 10 and 25 centimeters. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS DONATE TO HELP CENTRE
The Knights of Columbus (St. Edith Stein) collected over 600 pounds of non-perishable food items during a food drive they held on behalf of the Rockland Help Centre, on July 15. In addition, the Knights of Columbus made a contribution of $500 to assist the Centre in purchasing necessary grocery items during the summer months, when inventory levels are low. BOURGET HOSPITAL WORKER WINS $100,000 LOTTERY
Hilary Gore from Bourget won $100,000 with the Encore July 4 Lotto 6/49 draw. She matched the last six of seven Encore numbers in their exact order to win the prize. Gore, a 53-year-old Ottawa Hospital surgery coordinator was at work when she decided to check her ticket at the lottery terminal. “I saw all zeros and was a bit confused,” she said. “I asked the clerk to check my ticket again, and the machine said ‘Big winner!’” Gore made her way to the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up her winning
cheque. “I only buy lottery tickets once or twice a year,” she said. She admitted be- ing in shock and immediately called her husband with the news. They plan on doing some renovations, paying off some bills and putting some money towards an upcoming family wedding. “I am very, very happy,” said Gore. Encore can be played in conjunction with most online lottery games for an extra dollar and there is an Encore draw every day. Gore’s winning ticket was purchased at the Friends of Ot- tawa Hospital Terminal on Smyth Road in Ottawa.— EAP newsroom

850 APPELS POUR LES SVPR EN 2017-2018
L’assemblée générale annuelle des Services aux victimes Prescott-Russell (SVPR) s’est tenue le mercredi 20 juin. Linda Smith, directrice générale et Rachel Lamoureux, présidente du conseil d’administration, ont présenté leur rapport annuel. En 2017-18, les SVPR ont répondu à 850 appels. De ces demandes, 388 étaient reliées à des circonstances tragiques et 210 à de la violence conjugale. Cet organisme à but non lucratif travaille en partenariat avec les services d’urgences et services communautaires afin de fournir de l’aide pratique aux victimes. Les SVPR sont disponibles 24/7. Employées et bénévoles reçoivent régulièrement des cours de formation. Dernièrement, les SVPR avaient organisé une conférence avec Novas-CALACS sur la traite des femmes. —photo Michel Lamy
The second edition of the Clarence-Rockland Country Jamboree Festival took place from July 18 to 22 at the Clarence Creek Arena. The Country Jamboree returned this year for its second year, being led once again by Eric Michael Hawks, the organizer and president of Jamboree Country and a country artist himself. The festival kicked off with the Campers’ Jam, where festival-goers were able to request songs to the band. LE CUBEUR LOCAL ANTOINE CANTIN BAT UN RECORD MONDIAL
Antoine Cantin pendant la huitième compétition annuelle de résolution de Cube Rubik dans la région de la Capitale Nationale, qui a ieu à Rockland cette été. Il a gagné l’évènement principal, soit le 3x3x3. Le jeune homme de Rockland a résolu ce cube en 5,10 secondes, alors que la moyenne générale était de 7,24 secondes. Il est aussi arrivé premier, deuxième et troisième dans neuf autres catégories. —photo fournie
Le cubeur local de Rockland, Antoine Cantin, a battu un record mondial pour la résolution du cube Rubik avec les yeux bandés. Ce record a été réalisé le samedi 21 juillet, lors des championnats européens à Madrid, en Espagne. Le record d’Antoine Cantin est pour la moyenne des trois résolutions requises lors d’une ronde. Celle-ci est de 21,18 secondes – ces temps de résolutions étant de 21,61, 22,08 et 19,84 secondes. Pour chaque résolution, le chronométrage a commencé aussitôt qu’il voit le cube. Il pouvait l’examiner aussi longtemps qu’il vou- lait, mais le temps découlait. Lorsque prêt, il devait mettre son bandeau pour couvrir ses yeux et il commençait la résolution. Le temps retenu est donc le temps de mémorisation et le temps de résolution combiné. Ce record mondial est le cinquième d’Antoine. En 2014, à Toronto, il a battu un record pour une résolution à une main de 8,75 secondes, une résolution du cube skewb avec une moyenne de 4,54 secondes à Philadelphie et une résolution à une main avec une moyenne de 12,56 secondes, encore à Toronto. En 2015, il a battu le record pour une résolution à une main avec une moyenne de 10,87 secondes. Antoine a fait ses études élémentaires à l’école Sainte Félicité de Clarence Creek, et a fréquenté l’école secondaire L’Escale de Rockland. BOARD SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTION COMPLIANCE AUDIT COMMITTEE
In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (MEA), the Upper Canada District School Board will appoint an Election Compliance Audit Committee to consider compliance audit applications with regard to trustee candidates’ financial statements filed under Section 81 of the (MEA) for the 2018 election. The purpose of the Election Compliance Audit Committee is to: • Review compliance audit applications, if any, made by electors and decide whether they should be granted or rejected; • Appoint an auditor, if the application is granted; • Receive the auditor’s report; • Consider the auditor’s report and decide if legal proceedings should be commenced; and • Give directions accordingly and recover the costs of conducting the compliance audit from the appli- cant if no apparent contraventions are found. Committee members should possess a knowledge of the campaign finance rules of the (MEA) so they can make independent decisions on the merits of the applications. As the committee will operate as a quasi- judicial committee, prior experience on a committee, task force or tribunal would also be an asset. Applications will not be accepted from: • Employees or officers of the Upper Canada District School Board; • Trustees of the Upper Canada District School Board; • Candidates in the election for which the Committee is established or family members or employees of same, or any person connected to a candidate through any employment, contractual, business or partner- ship relationship; or • Any person who is or intends to volunteer or seek employment to assist any candidate in the election for which the Committee is established, including auditing or preparing trustee candidate financial statements. Reporting to the general administration, the Chief Building Official is responsible for overseeing the building permits and applications process and performing inspections under the provisions of the Building Code and under Municipal By-laws and all other related legislation.
