THE STORY OF THE ROYAL PORTFOLIO
Our Story
T he extraordinary destinations in our portfolio can be explored on their own or woven into a journey that unfolds like a story – one that moves from the creative pulse and culinary artistry of Cape Town to the ancient vineyards of the Cape Winelands, the wild beauty of Hermanus’ shores, and deep into the untouched wilderness of the Greater Kruger bushveld. A JOURNEY TO REMEMBER A stay with The Royal Portfolio is an immersion in the soul of South Africa - a celebration of its breathtaking landscapes, world- class cuisine, and untamed wildlife. At the core of everything we do is a purpose beyond hospitality. While our guests inspire us to craft moments of wonder, it is our deeper commitment – to people, conservation, and community – that truly defines us. Through The Royal Portfolio Foundation, we strive to leave a legacy that enriches not just our guests, but the very fabric of the places we call home.
The Royal Portfolio, South Africa’s foremost family-owned luxury hotel collection, was born from the passion of Liz and Phil Biden. With hearts devoted to hospitality, they have taken immense pride in unveiling the wonders of this land – where untamed wilderness meets timeless elegance, and rich cultural traditions weave stories into every moment of your journey.

THE STORY OF THE BIDENS
Creating The Royal Portfolio has been a labour of love - a journey woven with dedication, devotion, and the dream of sharing extraordinary places with extraordinary people.” “
A FAMILY LEGACY BEGINS The Royal Portfolio’s story began in 1999 when Liz and Phil Biden transformed their beloved family holiday home into Royal Malewane , set deep in South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park. “We were lucky to have a beautiful retreat in the African bush,” Phil recalls. “It was a place of unforgettable moments - sunsets, laughter, time together. Liz wanted to share that magic. But once we started, we couldn’t stop. Liz had a gift for hospitality, and soon, we wanted to create even more extraordinary South African experiences for our guests, our friends, and our growing family.” FROM A DREAM TO A PORTFOLIO That passion led to the opening of Birkenhead House in Hermanus, offering barefoot luxury on the edge of the ocean. Next came La Residence in Franschhoek, nestled among vineyards and mountains, a haven of opulence and tranquility. The Silo Hotel was a game changer, redefining urban cool through art and architecture at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. Liz’s flair for design and instinct for creating inviting spaces became the signature for every property. Her attention to detail and heartfelt hospitality remain the hallmarks of The Royal Portfolio - a collection of unique experiences that capture the very best of South Africa.

THE STORY OF THE BIDENS
THE NEXT CHAPTER It was the natural course of events for Liz and Phil’s son, Matthew, to take over the reins as CEO in 2022, after his 10-year tenure as Managing Director of The Royal Portfolio. Matthew continues to oversee the growth of the brand and investment both in Africa and beyond. He guides the brand in a new direction, while remaining true to the soulful ethos and strong family values that define each property. “Matthew is uniquely positioned to take the company forward with his years of experience and deep understanding of the brand,” says Phil. “His insights into the changing needs of today’s traveller, and his down-to-earth leadership style, mean that the future of The Royal Portfolio is in good hands.”
The Perfect Stay is more than luxury and service - it’s about being part of something greater, guided by nature and enriching our happiness beyond the experience itself.” “

ART, AND MORE Opened in September 2017, Zeitz MOCAA is Africa’s largest museum of contemporary art. The museum’s galleries showcase both temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection. Complementing its exhibition spaces, the museum features the BMW Centre for Art Education and the Atelier, a creative hub for emerging Cape Town artists. Under the guidance of The Silo’s Art Concierge, Michael Jacobs, guests can enjoy a private tour of Zeitz MOCAA. His expertise brings the museum to life while offering insights into The Silo’s own significant collection of African art.
T he Silo Hotel is situated above Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) — a steel and glass testament to the passionate inventiveness of the continent. This extraordinary space was designed by architect Thomas Heatherwick during the reimagining of the historic grain silo complex, an intersection of two worlds — past and present. A NEW HEIGHT OF LUXURY A living art gallery, The Silo showcases contemporary works by artists from Africa and the diaspora, with a private collection of over 300 pieces of African art. From the public areas to the luxury rooms — even the underground car park leads to an art gallery. The Granary Café and intimate Willaston Bar echo this visual appreciation, while the suites, all individually designed, offer both comfort and creativity, softly bathed in natural light through pillowed windows that frame both sky and ocean.
As the sun sets, The Silo truly comes into its own. The rooftop has become Cape Town’s most sought-after evening destination, where sundowners are a celebrated ritual. From this elevated imaginarium, guests watch as the sun slips beyond the horizon and harbour lights compete with stars to illuminate the night sky. THE PERFECT LOCATION A mirror to the vibrant energy of Cape Town, The Silo is a true original, an inspired fusion of all that the city represents. The guest experience is focused on the art, food and culture, inviting visitors to explore this city that is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Our concierge team will guide you through Cape Town and its surroundings, from art galleries and studios to beaches, nature reserves, wine estates and cultural attractions. Each experience is crafted by those who celebrate the inside story of one of the world’s best-loved cities.

A HOME FOR CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART
A BEACON FOR CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART Africa’s stories are bold and complex, beautiful and insightful, challenging and serene - and the walls of The Silo capture these narratives through visual journeys that are immersive and profound. At The Vault, the hotel’s dedicated exhibition space, works by regional artists bring these stories to life. Zimbabwean artist Wilfrid Timire’s “Grain of the Past, Seeds of the Future” paid tribute to Harare’s street life using recycled sackcloth. More recently, Gabrielle Kruger’s “Blurred Lines” demonstrated an innovative painting technique where materials are reused and given a new beginning on canvas. The Vault has included a variety of very talented contemporary artists in their programme, such as Zander Blom, Jody Paulsen and Kate Gottgens – all artists that I admire and look up to. The industrial and below-ground space is intimate and inviting.” “ GABRIELLE KRUGER, CAPE TOWN-BASED ARTIST
UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL NARRATIVES The Royal Portfolio has always valued art and local creativity, as is evident at all of our properties but due to its location above the Zeitz MOCAA, The Silo Hotel presented a unique opportunity to surround travellers in the world of contemporary African art, making it part of the guest experience. At The Silo, there is an invitation to explore African creativity around every corner – in public spaces and in the elegant suites - the carefully curated collection features diverse artists across mediums and messages that challenge and inspire. The reception area features Frances Goodman’s striking “Blue Velvet” and “Hooded Lady I, II & III” series, whilst Jody Paulsen’s colourful works “Must be the Rain” and “So Exotic” share the walls with Mohau Modisakeng’s thoughtful “Ditaola” collection. A compelling mixed media piece by Kudzanai Chiurai gives anyone who walks by a reason to stop and contemplate, Athi Patra Ruga’s vibrant piece adds a strong sense of place, and among these works, Cyrus Kabiru’s “C-Stunner” series captivates with its elaborate handcrafted eyewear and striking self-portrait photographs. At Granary Café and Willaston Bar, visitors will discover notable works by artists including Pierre Carl Vermeulen, Georgina Gratrix, and Kudzinai Chiurai. The guest library also displays Pieter Hugo’s “Hyena and Other Men” photographic series. Heading to the rooftop area, one of Wilfred Timire’s works “The Game Players” takes pride of place where guests can enjoy the beautiful harbour views and lose themselves in the energy of the continent’s creativity.

EXPERT GUIDANCE Wayve and her team regularly create new tasting experiences for guests, from vertical vintage comparisons to food and wine pairing adventures. Central to the wine philosophy at La Residence is the development of up-and-coming talent. The estate actively trains aspiring sommeliers and wine experts at La Residence and across The Royal Portfolio properties. This commitment to education ensures fresh perspectives in the wine programme while contributing to the growth of South Africa’s wine industry.
W ayve Kolevsohn, Group Beverage Manager and Sommelier for The Royal Portfolio says, “Warm, sunny days and cool nights result in wines with a distinctive balance of crisp acidity and generous flavours.” FROM VINEYARD TO GLASS The La Residence winemaking journey began in 2010 with the production of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. In 2015, we created our first flagship wine, the 2015 Owner’s Reserve , made from a single barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon from the vines on the farm. With just 560 bottles and 250 magnums produced, it showcases the exceptional qualities of the distinctive terroir of the Franschhoek Valley. A year later, the 2016 Nicole Alexandra made its debut - a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah, a voluptuous red blend with a juicy dark fruit character.
Our premium La Residence Rosé draws inspiration from Provence while remaining faithful to our unique Franschhoek climate and terroir. The 2024 La Residence Rosemary Jane Rosé represents the winemakers’ continuing labour of love, produced with care and patience from hand-picked Syrah grapes. Created in partnership with the award-winning winemakers from Radford Dale, our collection is meticulously crafted to capture the essence of its origins. Guests delight in experiencing these exceptional wines that reflect a sense of place. “Since our first vintage in 2010, the wines of La Residence have evolved so much. Our vines were planted in 2007 and are 18 years old now. They’re producing grapes of fantastic quality and concentration,” says Wayve. “We have some exciting plans for the next few years to plant new varietals and increase our offering.”

AT ONE WITH THE OCEAN
The ocean holds a mirror to our humanity. In its story we find both our wildness and our responsibility. To protect marine life is to honour ourselves.”
“
SHARING THE PLIGHT OF OUR OCEANS In Hermanus, conservation thrives as both community commitment and visitor experience, creating meaningful connections between people and marine life, and at Birkenhead House we ensure our guests have access to encounters that create lasting awareness - inspiring them to share the message of marine conservation after witnessing the ocean’s magnificent wildlife firsthand.
THE HEARTBEAT OF CONSERVATION Connecting with nature is effortless in Hermanus – the ocean forms both the backdrop and centrepiece of every experience. While the arrival of whales during the winter months is always a highlight, the town remains a passionate marine conservation destination throughout the year. The Cape Whale Coast offers opportunities to not only witness marine life but also to participate in experiences that build deeper understanding and appreciation of the incredible biodiversity of this unique marine ecosystem. MARITIME MOMENTS TO REMEMBER As part of the town’s evolving conservation story, there’s much excitement about the South African Whale Centre (SAWC), which is destined to become a global hub for innovative marine conservation and education. This state-of-the-art facility will replace the current
Whale House Museum, integrating scientific research, immersive experiences and cutting-edge technology to inspire and educate.
For those seeking first-hand experiences, boat-based whale watching provides a chance to observe southern right whales in their element. Purpose-built catamarans operated by experienced crews navigate the waters of Walker Bay, meaning that visitors can witness these gentle giants at close proximity. Additional sightings of playful Cape fur seals, dolphins and African penguins are an added bonus. The region’s unique shark population has also become central to conservation efforts. The South African Shark Conservancy , a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to protecting sharks, conducts research on behaviour and ecology from its laboratory in Hermanus. This research seeks to better understand sharks’ crucial role in marine ecosystems. Visitors can participate in weekday tours.

ROYAL MALEWANE | Greater Kruger National Park
SHADES OF AN AFRICAN SUNSET Bold pink hues elevate the traditional “under canvas” experience, offering a light-hearted contrast with the rich greens and earthy browns of the bushveld. Drawing from this enticing interplay, each of the six suites features floor-to-ceiling windows, a private heated plunge pool, and decks that bridge outdoor and indoor living spaces. The fusion of different elements flows throughout each suite, where Persian rugs and artisanal furnishings blend with brass and stained glass alongside contemporary comforts. Each space opens through hand- crafted Indian doors, where flowing canvas drapes heighten the sense of romance. From stripes and patterns to jewel-toned Asian influences, the interiors are accented by Moroccan vessels, French antiques, and artworks that speak of Africa. The design of each detail creates a multi-sensory experience that highlights the wilderness setting while following a daring creative direction that redefines what it means to go on safari.
Masiya’s Camp shapes a new safari narrative, challenging staid tented camp traditions while taking cues from nature’s immense creativity and unapologetic expression of freedom.” “

IN HONOUR OF A LEGEND
Wilson Masiya’s wise presence and courageous life paved the way for an entire generation of Guides and Trackers at Royal Malewane.” “
SCAN TO WATCH
After working as a Tracker in Kruger National Park for the National Parks Board (now SANParks) in the 1990s, Wilson joined the team at Thornybush Game Lodge and soon gained a reputation as one of the best in the Greater Kruger. His strength of spirit and intimate knowledge of the bush made him a natural choice to join the Royal Portfolio team when the Biden family opened Royal Malewane in 1999. A WILDERNESS BROTHERHOOD Nature has a way of creating connections, and when Juan Pinto, 18, went to Royal Malewane fresh out of school to become a Ranger, he had the good fortune to start working with Wilson Masiya. This brought together two men from different backgrounds whose kinship would span nearly two decades.
incredible knowledge. They soon realised they shared the same quest for understanding and the ability to ‘feel’ the bush. It’s like an artist or musician; it’s a talent to understand the wild. They both possessed that talent, and they found each other.” PASSING IT ON Those who spent time with Wilson were invariably moved by his reverence for the wilderness and his astonishing ability to interpret the landscape and wildlife - a talent that only grew more profound with the passing years. After Wilson Masiya sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2015, The Royal Portfolio team sought to honour his memory in a special way. Masiya’s Camp stands as a tribute to his significant impact and enduring legacy - our gesture of love and respect for his remarkable contribution and a life well lived.
