NV Matriarch Jacqueline Vilardi Dies At 87 In New Jersey Jacqueline M. Vilardi, 87, passed away on Friday, Febru- ary 19, 2021, in New Jersey. She was predeceased by her husband Theodore “Ted” Vilardi, founder and publisher of NV Publications, in 2013. More recently, in 2018 she was predeceased by her son, Thomas “Tom” Vilardi, President and Publisher of NV Publications, and Board Converting News . Born in Hoboken, NJ, on April 6, 1933, to John Blangey and Marie Mancini, Jacqueline attended Union Hill High School in Union City, NJ, and worked for Otis Elevator. Sur- viving her are daughters, Barbara Vilardi; Victoria Donato and husband, Jerry; and Jeneane Vilardi, Tom’s wife. Jeneane recalled how much her mother-in-law loved living in Avon-by-the Sea, NJ, when Ted moved the NV

Jacqueline and Ted Vilardi

Publications offices there. She also enjoyed their time at their home in Jupiter, Florida, during the frigid northeast winters. They were true snowbirds.

“My mother-in-law was a force to be reckoned with,” remembered Jeneane. “She was never at a loss for words and had a sly sense of humor. I will remember the good times, laugh quietly about the hyster- ical ones and silently revere the sad ones. I find peace knowing she was greeted by her two favorite men...and Frank Sinatra wasn’t one of them.” NV Publications’ current President and Publisher, Robyn Smith, who assumed Tom Vilardi’s role upon his passing, said, “I had the pleasure of working with Ted and Tom starting in 2004 after having been a com- petitor of NV for 17 years. My first official duties with NV were coordinating the trade show booth and ordering refreshments for SuperCorrExpo in Atlanta. Tom hired me with Ted’s blessings, but Jacqui wasn’t too sure since I’d been on the other side of the fence for so long. I think I eventually passed muster. To no one’s surprise, she was a woman fiercely devoted to her men.” “My fondest remembrance of Jacqui was of her welcoming me at a family dinner as the newest member of the NV team,” said Len Prazych, Editor in Chief of Board Con- verting News . “I was immediately struck by her ability to make me feel at home and part of the family. She had the grace, dignity and love befitting the matriarch of the generous Vilardi family. She was a beautiful woman and I will always remember her.” Also surviving Jacqueline are six grand- children -- Daniel, Jaclyn, Alyssa, Jason, Thomas Jr. and Tyler -- and five great grand- children: Daniel Jr., Gia, Joseph Jr., Trey, and Bryce.

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

Web is in contact to less flute tips compared to bar systems. • High precision glue application • Less moisture applied to web —No wear of shoes and springs —No adjustment of shoes or paper gap —Uniform glue application over entire working width for all flutes by use of pneumatic cylinders instead of springs — Less contamination by paper dust and glue remains —No jam of board because of web breaks caused by splice joints going through 630-784-0800 Benefits —Rollers secure exact defined first point of contact of liner and single-faced board - No double kiss —Frame design avoids unintended lifting of roller shoe (compared to spring or air loaded systems) - No double kiss —Pressure can be increased or released for special grades or products 490 Tower Blvd., Carol Stream, IL Contact Chicago Electric to GET IT RIGHT 630-784-0800 info@chicagoelectric.com chicagoelectric.com Solution The ProPress system ensures an optimum heat transfer to the board. It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Paper And Plastics Exports To China Drop Again In 2020

Box Shipments ( U.S. Corrugated Product Shipments) Industry Shipments In Billions of Square Feet Month December 2020

According to a report on resource-recycling.com , re- covered paper shipments from the U.S. to China slowed immensely in 2020, newly released figures show. Mean- while, scrap plastic exports decreased during the year, but shipments to certain countries grew sharply. The U.S. Census Bureau recently released trade data for December 2020, allowing for a full-year analysis of recovered commodity exports. Recovered fiber exports totaled 15.9 million short tons in 2020, down from 18.3 million short tons the prior year. That’s the lowest volume exported since 2003. It’s also down 27 percent from 2016, before China and other countries announced significant import restrictions on recovered commodities. China bought the bulk of U.S. recovered fiber in 2020, importing 4.8 million short tons; however, that’s an 18 percent decrease from the 5.9 million short tons China brought in during the previous year. December 2020 represented by far the lowest total for monthly recovered fiber shipments to China on record, and November was the second-lowest. Monthly shipments to China hit a peak in December 2007, when they totaled 1.9 million short tons. The December 2020 volume is just two percent of that peak. The Chinese government reduced its import permit approvals as 2020 progressed.

PPC Spring Conference Offers Members A Virtual Taste Of Denver If not for the pandemic, members of the Paperboard Pack- aging Council (PPC) would be traveling to Denver this March for the association’s 2021 Spring Outlook & Strat- egies Conference. While the event will be held virtually, March 24-26, the folding carton industry executives in at- tendance will be treated to a virtual tour of Denver, featur- ing the city’s vibrant art scene, alongside excellent speak- ers and virtual networking. Paying special attention to topic areas that will most affect paperboard packaging today and tomorrow, the meeting program will highlight trends and news in sustain- ability, economy, industry, and leadership. To address sustainability, PPC will welcome David Feber and Daniel Nordigaarden of McKinsey & Company to discuss emerging global themes and opportunities in sustainability. Later, the American Forest & Paper Associa- tion’s Brian Hawkinson will introduce a new recycling de- sign guide for paper-based packaging. Offering perspec- tives on the industry and the economy at large, attendees will also hear keynotes from Arsen Kitch, CEO of Clearwa- ter Paper, and celebrated economist Alan Beaulieu. “Knowledge is power,” said Ben Markens, PPC presi- dent. “Through our Spring Conference, we want to arm folding carton industry executives with information to ef-

fectively navigate market challenges while being the best leaders they can be.” The leadership portion of the meeting program will center around trust. PPC will welcome to the virtual stage David Horsager, best-selling author of The Trust Edge, The Daily Edge, and the upcoming Trusted Leader. Horsag- er specializes in helping leaders and organizations drive business results through trust. The meeting will also feature a virtual exhibit hall, allow- ing boxmakers to learn about the latest technologies and products from industry suppliers. Attendees can connect in real-time or schedule appointments for later once inside a virtual booth. Additionally, the virtual platform allows PPC to offer en- terprise pricing so folding carton companies can send any number of employees for one fixed rate. Like Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, highlighted in the meeting’s marketing imagery, the virtual conference will serve as a stage for professional growth, inspiration, and personal connection. Visit paperbox.org/spring to learn more. Register early to receive your Denver-inspired care package, while sup- plies last. PPC’s mantra to “grow, promote, and protect” recogniz- es both the opportunities and challenges that exist today while maintaining an eye on the horizon. PPC has never been more integral to the health and wellbeing of North America’s paperboard packaging manufacturers.

Alpha Packaging Delivers Customized Solutions With Help From Baysek Machines Alpha Packaging, Inc. was founded in 1987 and is the largest indepen- dent corrugated plant in Arkansas, according to President Mike Stec. The 150,000-sq-ft facility in Greenwood sits on 14 ½ acres and converts about 23 million-sq-ft of board per month. The company has grown consider- ably since its founding. It was started in a design room and relocated to a 20,000-sq-ft building in 1988 and then a 30,000-sq-ft facility in 1989. It was moved to its current facility in 1992 and has expanded several times, adding warehouses in Missouri, Louisiana, Fort Smith and Springdale, AR.

The manufacturing floor is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, capable of creating virtually any style container, including triplewall, and plastic corrugated. There is even a foam plant within the box plant, which pairs well with in-house kitting. There is also custom made equipment for special projects. Stec describes Alpha Packaging as “service intensive,” providing cus- tomers with vendor management inventory requirements and design op- portunities. Over the years, investments in machinery, staffing and design capabil- ities have ensured high customer retention and satisfaction. One of the newer purchases is a C-170 fully automatic rotary anvil flatbed diecutter from Baysek Machines. The diecutter can cut, strip, count and stack up to 60,000 pieces per hour or 1800 sheets per hour. Stec says he contacted Baysek in 2018 and knew the machine would fit perfectly into his operations as labor became more difficult to find. “We were looking for ways to reduce the number of hand touches required in stripping, stacking of interior diecut packaging and even preparing pizza boxes to cycle through the shrink tunnel.” The C-170 produces nick-free, multiple-out diecuts with one operator. It is ideal for partitions, bakery and pizza circles, and food and pharmaceuti- cal boxes. It can handle sheet sizes from 20- x 20-inch up to 55- x 67-inch and flute thicknesses from F- to B/C-doublewall. While the machine does not run as fast as Alpha Packaging’s other rotary diecutters in the plant, he says, “It can run a larger multiple out because you don’t have to worry about stacker issues. The Baysek is a classic sheet plant piece of equipment that gives your plant capabilities which competition does not have.” The C-170 rotary anvil flatbed diecutter from Baysek Machines is providing la- bor saving efficiencies for diecut corrugated packaging and even foam.

when the success occurs in the face of tremendous ad- versity. Once again places SCT in an elite company in the supply of product of the highest integrity and safety”, said Brian Hunt, COO. Green Bay Packaging Invests In Eighth Chalmers DST With the startup of Green Bay Packaging’s new paper ma- chine just weeks away, the Kalamazoo, Michigan, division purchased a Chalmers DST to enhance its testing lab and compliment its design capabilities. This will make eight Chalmers DST for the group as they make light-weighting and right-weighting a priority. The Chalmers DST measures the structural quality of combined board produced at the corrugator and measures the damage (crush) that occurs during the converting pro- cess. This quality can be compared to what should be ob- tained on undamaged board and a Performance Indicator calculated. The DST provides feedback in twelve seconds so real time on machine adjustments can be implemented. Based on the calculated Performance Indicator, the DST can give a good idea of what the likely stacking per- formance will be and also the effects of cyclical humidity creep. It provides an accurate indication of how a box will perform in a real world environment. Visit www.korutest.com for more information.

Alpha is also using the C-170 to diecut foam. “I believe we were Baysek’s first customer to use the machine to die- cut foam products. We put a diverter line in to handle the trimmings of plastic corrugated, foam and other products,” he says. Stec characterizes the experience with Baysek as “very professional, with an efficient installation process, basic training and personal service after the sale.” Tim Engle, Baysek National Sales Manager, adds, “Mike and his team were very professional and fun to work with during the sales and installation process. We look forward to continuing to support Alpha Packaging with excellent after sales care.” Southern Champion Tray Receives BRC Accreditation Chattanooga, Tennessee based Southern Champion Tray, recently confirmed that they have received the BRC Global Standards certification for packaging and packaging mate- rials. period to ensure compliance and instead compliance is mandatory immediately. COVID-19 Prevention Plans OSHA guidance strongly recommends the develop- ment and implementation of a written COVID-19 pre- vention plan, or the addition of a COVID-19 – epidemic/ pandemic section to existing injury and illness prevention programs (IIPP). Implementation of the following actions are advised with respect to your company’s written plan: • Communicate the company COVID-19 prevention poli- cies and procedures to employees. • Perform a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HAC- CP) to identify, evaluate and correct COVID-19 hazards. • Provide physical distancing of at least six feet. • Mandate the use of face coverings. • To reduce transmission risk, practice hazard prevention and control using OSHA Hierarchy of Controls: First -

COVID-19 within two weeks. The EO also instructed the agency to consider establishing a COVID-19 emergency temporary standard (ETS) by March 15. OSHA issued stronger workplace guidance on Janu- ary 29. “Protecting Workers: Guidance on Mitigating and Preventing the Spread of COVID-19 in the Workplace” provides updated guidance and recommendations. The guidance is not a standard or regulation, but that may still come in the form of an ETS. Below is some information on ETS and COVID-19 prevention plans that could be helpful for box manufacturers. Emergency Temporary Standard - ETS Under certain limited conditions, OSHA is authorized to set emergency temporary standards that take effect im- mediately and are in effect until superseded by a perma- nent standard. Unlike regular rulemaking, there is no time

engineering solutions (including elimina- tion or substitution), followed by safe work practices, administrative controls, and fi- nally, PPE. • Document and implement procedures to investigate and respond to COVID-19 cases in the workplace. If any employees contract COVID-19, ensure that any cases that are determined not reportable are thoroughly documented. • Provide employees with COVID-19 train- ing that is customized per company pol- icies and considers their work situations. • Exclude COVID-19 cases and exposed employees from the workplace until they are no longer an infection risk. • Establish recordkeeping of COVID-19 cases and reporting of serious illnesses and multiple cases as locality dictates, such as Cal/OSHA and the local health department. Sample COVID-19 Prevention Plans The sites below are some sample COVID-19 prevention plans that you can cus- tomize for your company or plants. While these are good resources, we encourage you to craft your plan specifically to your plant/company. • Cal/OSHA model prevention plan • San Bernardino County COVID-19 Busi- ness Operation Plan Template • Michigan Department of Labor & Eco- nomic Opportunity (MIOSHA) COVID-19 Preparedness & Response Plan for Lower and Medium Exposure Risk Employers Mary Drain is the Director of Technical Ser- vices at Fibre Box Association (FBA). SUN Automation Group Introduces Helios AI/Machine Learning Platform Glen Arm, Maryland based SUN Automation Group last week announced the launch of Helios, the new AI and Ma- chine Learning platform tailored specifically to the corru- gated converting industry. The platform is OEM-agnostic and engineered to provide corrugated manufacturers ac- cess to robust, actionable insights into the performance of their machines -- enabling minimized downtime, optimized maintenance schedules, and maximized profit. Helios is a product of SUN Automation Group. “IIoT makes every bit of data actionable,” says Helios Director of Technology Matthew C. Miller. “So many cor- rugated plants rely on human intuition and experience to drive their decisions. With Helios, anomalies that are im- perceptible to the most well-trained operators can be de- tected in real time and acted upon. The machine learning capabilities will mean that the platform only gets smarter the more data and user reactions that it is able to process.” The new platform is designed to minimize downtime, maximize profitability, and decrease the opportunity cost associated with only taking machines offline for preventa- tive maintenance (as opposed to for major malfunctions). These high-level benefits manifest themselves in specific cost and resource-optimizing operational benefits and ac- tionable insights.

Some of the most beneficial insights are preventative/ proactive parts ordering, knowledge about the exact time and cost of parts replacements, the ability for operators to pinpoint the source of slowdowns and other issues, and operator-efficiency training to help machine operators learn and adapt to best practices.

“We understand that data is only as powerful as the actionable insights it can provide,” says Chris Kyger, Presi- dent, SUN Automation Group. “That’s why we are so excit- ed to bring Helios to the corrugated industry. This incred- ible technology will help box plants increase productivity and efficiency while reducing costs and downtime.” Helios provides three key benefits: remote monitoring, predictive maintenance and anomaly detection. SUN Introduces Helios (CONT’D FROM PAGE 22)

Remote monitoring provides deep insights into current and historical machine operation and performance that can be seen and accessed in real time from any device. Predictive maintenance optimizes machine maintenance intervals using artificial intelligence that adapts based on the machine operation and usage. Anomaly detection no-

tifies users about abnormal machine states that allow op- erators to react to a potential issue before the failure oc- curs. More robust predictive analytics will be phased into the platform over time. Corrugated manufacturers will have access to a free Helios demo, allowing them to experience the platform. The site also provides a ROI calculator that can showcase the benefits that Helios can offer to operations of all sizes.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

SUPPLIER REPORTS 2021 (PART 5)

AES Souderton, Pennsylvania: Jeff Dieterich reports, “2020 proved how essential the box industry is to the health and safety of our country, keeping us fed, clothed, and healthy while shelter- ing at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The huge uptick in de- mand for boxes and cartons during this time has led to an increased need for high-quality scrap handling equipment and systems capable of managing the demand, as well as the associated mainte- nance and support services. “If the year taught us anything, it was the importance of instilling adaptability and resilience in an organization’s culture and business strategy. Innovative is not just a word that describes our brand’s personality; it’s a value that ev- eryone at AES embodies, and we quickly found new ways to adapt our business to changing times. We solve scrap conveyance problems every day for our customers, and with a lot of planning, pivoting, and new safety protocols, we haven’t missed a beat in delivering exceptional system installations and field service. “Of course, we could not have done this without our Jeff Dietrich

fantastic team members, who rose to the occasion and continue to perform their work under sometimes challeng- ing conditions. In fact, we’ve doubled down on our com- mitment to customer service, finding inventive ways to meet customer needs wherever and whenever they arise. “This customer-centric approach gave us the opportu- nity to roll out AES VTech, a new solution for offering more convenient scrap system services. Like telemedicine for your scrap system, AES VTech is a virtual technical assis- tance program that leverages remote technology to eval- uate, diagnose, and service scrap system performance problems for greater business continuity. The program has proved to be an effective method of conducting scrap system analyses and virtual site visits when in-plant work is restricted. “2021 is off and running, as box companies move for- ward with their expansion plans and new initiatives. Or- ders for the AES AirShark™ rotary material separator were up by 50 percent in 2020—a trend we expect will contin- ue this year. Dust control issues will remain important for box companies to manage, not only to maintain OSHA and NFPA compliance but to support the safety and productiv- ity of their operations.
