Market ismore than vegetables
At the Vankleek Hill Market, for many old friends like Andy Perrault and Brian Henderson, the market is more than a place to buy fresh vegetables. “It’s a gathering place for dear friends in the area,” said Perrault. Story on page 5.

FromNovember 10 to 17, Hawkesbury OPP responded to 199 occurrences, including six break and enter, four incidents of assault and four theft reports. There were no im- paired driving related incidents reported during this time. From the 199 occurrences, 21 of them resulted in charges.
Break and Enter
On November 12, o#cers responded to an alarm at Dalmen Windows and Doors in Saint-Isidore shortly before 10:30 p.m. Constables Leslie Hahn and Jason Cholette investigated the matter and it was discovered that someone had broken into the busi- ness via a broken window. Trucks in the yard were damaged and there was an attempt to steal the trucks which contained windows, doors and related items. Nothing was reported missing from the property. Two weeks prior, a truck containing windows and doors had been stolen from the same location. The truck was later found burnt in Ottawa. The estimated value of good stolen was $135,000. The matter is under investi- gation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hawkesbury OPP at 613-632-2729 or 1-888-310-1122. Just before 3 p.m. on November 10, Constable Mario Bourgeois observed a white 2006 Pontiac Pursuit traveling at 160 km per hour in a posted 100-km per hour zone. The driver, 76-year-old Nina Gann Belayev of Montreal, was charged with racing a mo- tor vehicle. She was also charged under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with operating a motor vehicle without insurance. The vehicle was seized and impoun- ded for seven days. Belayev’s drivers’ licence was also seized and suspended for seven days. The driver is scheduled to appear at the L’Orignal Court on December 4, at 9 a.m. Stunt Driving Charges

BMA sponsors the Santa Parade and Trash and Treasure Day. We also provide welcome packages to new residents that include VKH dollars, brochures and a few other things.” Mark Dacosta and Kate Stevens own Jam- bel, which o!ers Jamaican and Belgium food specialities. “We sell hybrid pumpkins that are very meaty and great baked with butter or for making soup.” Jambel was o!ering Jamaican patties for the tasting event. “They are delicious,” said 12-year-old Jazmine Johnson. “We have to get some of these.” Jambel also sells fresh vegetables, prepared soups, roti, and their most popu- lar item, jerk sauce. “People have fun here,” said Dacosta. “They come in and they are smiling. It is part of their social outings.” “The market is open whenever the school is open. The school o!ers us their janitorial services,” said McClintock. “In the summer we are outside. VANKLEEK HILL | The Vankleek Hill (VKH) Farmers Market held the annual The Farm- er and The Chef tasting event last Satur- day. Several vendors and customers were very happy with the results. “All of our famers are very good chefs,” smiled Laurie McClintock, manager of the market. “Al- most all of our producers are organic. It is not a requirement, but it is a bonus.” “The treasurer Gail Kroenwald founded the market 18 years ago,” said McClintock. “A few of the vendors have been here a long time. The food is really good and really fresh.” “People do not know we are open all year round,” said Mark Greenwald, a member of the board of directors for the market. “We are only closed for Christmas and New Year’s.”The market has 8 board members to make sure everything runs smoothly and people know what is going on. “We have a website that people can check out and see what is going on,” said Greenwald. “Every week, we update the site and make a list of what vendors are supposed to be at the market that Saturday.” “The market is a good way to have a fun day and let people taste the things that are made here,” said McClintock. “We normally have about 15 vendors with more around Christmas time. Everything is made here by the vendors.” The market is more than just shopping, for some Jennifer Dewar makes breakfast at the market every other weekend.“I used to own a restaurant in Dalkeith,” said Dewar. “I love coming here.

Mom-to-Mom sale a success

Cumberland. “I found some sweet shoes for my nephew and a bunch of t-shirts for $5. I really like the idea of having moms selling stu" for a reasonable price to other moms. People should do that more often, since we are all on a tight budget this time of the year!” The sale was also an opportunity to help the community and the less fortunate. To enter, visitors had to make a food donation or pay $0.50, which would help the local food bank. “It’s a place of exchange for families who are looking for clothes and toys or a special gift for Christmas,” said Judith Sauvé-Roy. “All the pro!ts from the entry fee will be given to the Vankleek Hill food bank. I was surprised how fast people answered the invitation and how the businesses were wil- ling to come. It’s great and I’m thinking of doing another one downstairs when there’s no ice. We could have a lot more to o"er and accommodate more people.” “It was like a #ea market for moms with some goodies on the side, like scented can- dles,” said Jenny Delson, of Kanata. It’s good for the community spirit and I got some ideas for Christmas.”

VANKLEEK HILL | The Mom-to-Mom sale and Christmas fair was a hit on Facebook last week and a good crowd gathered at the Vankleek Hill Community Centre to !nd hidden gems for the kids and Christ- mas gifts. “It’s just an idea that I got and I put it on Facebook and Hawkesbury Classi!ed and the response was tremendous,” said sale or- ganizer Judith Sauvé-Roy. “I simply invited the moms who wanted to sell things like clothing and toys to come here and share it with everybody. In the end, I had to re- fuse !ve people since I didn’t have enough tables and 16 local businesses also joined the event.” A whole lot of toys, used and new, clo- thing for kids, crafts, arts, jewelry and beau- ty products, the reception hall was packed with goodwill and good !nds. “I was watching the hockey tournament downstairs with my kid when someone told me about the sale”, said Christine Lowe, of

Pleased to see new mayor As I woke up on this Plantagenet morn- ing, I was pleased to !nd out that Mayor Lalonde has been replaced. For the most part, many felt that we were in for another four years. I didn’t believe it. Over his last two terms I saw a mayor whose lack of con- sideration for the population will leave a mark for years to come. a small town. When most cities !nd ways to capitalize on this simple activity, we created a situation where people try to sell their wares when most people are out of town. People moving in, moving out, selling baby cloths and even dying were left with the option to go to another town to sell these simple surpluses of living. Perhaps Lalonde should have listened to the complaints and realized that life does not wait for three-day weekends.
!scal responsibility, reduced spending, pension reform as well as a serious plan to drop property taxes. We also need a mayor with a mandate to improve our community in these areas and clean up the mess of the previous administration without cowering to the county. Is Dicaire the man? I don’t know but one thing is for certain, he must be held to a higher standard than his pre- decessor.
surrounding his conduct is proving a con- tinuous liability. Now armed with guns, handcu"s and a wrong attitude, it is only a question of time when another stupid inci- dent will happen with dire consequences and we will again pick up the tab adding to the litigation already in progress. Not listen- ing and not !xing this mistake has certainly cost Lalonde hundreds of votes and prob- ably cost him the election. His indi"erence on this issue cost us several thousands of dollars and left us with a running tab. But the real question is how we wish to see our community in the future. We need
His indi"erence in handling and inform- ing the population on the asphalt plant for one, his relationship with the county, his in- di"erence on the Royal Bank, among many other things, were all reasons enough to lose the election. But the one that stuck in the craw with many citizens with such bit- terness is his forming and arming our by- law inspectors with body armor, handcu"s, pepper spray and guns. Changing the yard sales to three estab- lished long weekends a year was also a con- troversial by-law. This essentially took away one of the most pleasant social activities for
But there was a plan. This permitted his beloved by-law o#cers to be unleashed and empowered. They bullied their way around town and at the dump, with little re- straint, trespassing, looking into windows, barking at people for insigni!cant things. Just a week ago, by-law o#cer Guindon (charged and convicted of shooting a dog), still proclaims that he has the right to go on any property at any time, claiming pow- ers greater that even the police. New deal with entrepreneur centre The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) have approved a new core funding agreement between the counties and the provincial government for the Prescott and Russell Entrepreneurship Centre (PREC). The new agreement is for a three-year period rather than the annual agreement which has been the standard. The core agreement has the UCPR contracting with the Ministry of Research and Innovation for $267,075 spread out over a three-year period, which the counties will transfer to the Prescott- Russell Community Development Centre (PRCDC), which then delivers the various programs through PREC which will aid local businesses.
