Beau temps sur le Festival western de Wendover

C’était la 31 e édition du Festival western de Wendover, organisé par le ClubOptimiste
de Wendover, qui s’est tenu en grandes pompes du 14 au 19 juillet.
Le chef Denis Paquette, de Desjardins Catering, de Sarsfield, a disposé sur la table plus de 150 côtes levées qui ont accompagné les 60 morceaux de poulets préparés pour la soirée du 16 juillet.
Et, quand on parle festival western, on parle bien sûr du festival du poulet et de la côte levée qui a eu lieu le 16 juillet en soi- rée. La Foire artisanale, très courue dans la région, a vu plusieurs festivaliers débarquer, pendant trois jours entiers, pour voir les différentes œuvres faites par des artisans de la région. La température aidant, jeunes et moins jeunes s’en sont donné à cœur joie pendant ces quelques jours de fête.

Brève - Brief Salmonella outbreak warning The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHA) and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have issued a recall notice on several brands of frozen breaded chicken products because of a series of salmonella cases in Ontario, Québec, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland-Labrador. Both agencies state that the risk still remains low of a full-scale outbreak but advise consumers to be careful when handling any frozen or raw breaded chicken or other meat products. The two agencies have recorded 47 cases reported since July 2 of people suffering from salmonella poisoning with the majority of cases in Ontario. There are a dozen cases in Québec, and two each in the maritime provinces. Investigation has determined the people became sick sometime between Feb. 7 and May 23. A variety of suspected frozen raw breaded chicken products available for sale during that period are now under a recall notice. The complete list is available at the CFIA website at http://www.inspection.gc.ca. Symptoms of sal- monella poisoning include fever, chills, diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache, nausea, and/or vomiting. The symptoms last for four to seven days. People in good health may not become sick enough to require hospital treatment.
Les Subway Brunet, propriétaires de restaurants Subway dans Prescott-Russell, Orléans et Ottawa, ont organisé leur tournoi de golf, le 10 juillet dernier, au Club de Golf Nation, à Curran. La Société de développement communautaire de Prescott-Russell (SDCPR) honorera la mémoire de l’un de ses bâtisseurs, le 21 août prochain, avec la tenue de l’Omnium Daniel Gigault, au Club de golf Nation. Ancien directeur de l’organisme, Daniel Gigault a été à la barre de la SDCPR de 1986 à 2007, date où il a pris sa retraite. M. Gigault est décédé en juin 2014 à l’âge de 70 ans et le tournoi de golf de cette année permettra de faire avancer sa vision partenariale dans la région en regroupant les acteurs importants des milieux économiques, communautaires et sociaux sur unmême parcours. A homeowner in Alfred-Plantagenet Township is missing his lawn tractor and two chainsaws. The thief took them from the back yard of a Conces- sion 9 residence while the homeowner was get- ting gasoline. The theft occurred mid-afternoon July, some time before 3:30 p.m. The homeowner was out back cutting down trees when he stop- ped work to go get gasoline. When he returned he found both the lawn tractor and two chainsaws gone. The lawn tractor is a Yardworks brand, 17.5hp rig with a 46-inch blade. The chainsaws are both Stihl brand, a 16-inch blade with Model Number MS290, and a 14-inch with Model 200T. Anyone with information on the theft can call Const. Du succès pour le camp de pêche de la CNS

Treize jeunes âgés de 10 à 15 ans ont parti- cipé au camp de jour de pêche de la Conser- vation de la Nation Sud (CNS), organisé à Casselman. Cette 7 e édition, qui s’est dérou- lée du 8 au 10 juillet, s’est avérée être un succès, selon les organisateurs. Une augmentation de la participation a été constatée par Holly Nyenkamp, l’étu- diante à qui le projet a été confié cette année. « C’est la plus grosse année. C’est vraiment un succès. On a eu 13 jeunes alors que les autres années ça n’a pas dépassé 10. » Organisé dans le cadre de la Semaine de pêche en famille, du 4 au 12 juillet, le camp de jour de pêche de la CNS est pour les enfants de 10 à 15 ans et s’étend sur une période de trois jours. L’activité est gratuite et l’équipement de pêche est fourni. Les parents y déposent leurs enfants vers 9 h et reviennent les chercher à 15 h. Des invités sont présents chaque jour pour donner des trucs aux enfants, leur par- ler de la pêche à lamouche, des règlements et des techniques. Par exemple, lors de la première jour- née du camp, Jacques Levert, employé de la CNS et pêcheur semi-professionnel dans ses temps libres, était présent. Il a montré aux jeunes plusieurs techniques de base telles qu’accrocher leur hameçon et leur ver à la ligne, faire des nœuds, lancer la ligne ainsi que les règlements de sécurité à retenir lors d’une partie de pêche. Le côté éducatif du camp se fait aussi selon les principes véhiculés par la CNS, soit la protection et le respect de la nature. Les jeunes ont ainsi pu découvrir les différentes sortes de poissons qui peuplent la Rivière Nation et comment les relâcher avec les bonnes techniques. Enmettant sur pied ce camp, la CNS veut initier les enfants à la pêche sportive, tout en leur donnant les bases nécessaires qui leur permettront de continuer à pratiquer ce sport. Il y a des autres programmes récréatives en futur pour les jeunes de la région cour- teoisie de CNS. Les avis seront au site web www.nation.on.ca. Les jeunes étaient patients après avoir lancé leur ligne à l’eau, même si parfois la hâte d’attraper un poisson se faisait sentir chez certains d’entre eux. La bonne chance aux jeunes pêcheurs et pêcheuses.

Aujourd’hui, l’UCFO continue d’être un partenaire important. En effet, en plus de participer activement au comité de développement économique du campus d’Alfred, LGUWKUƒGTFŦCPPQPEGTSWG l’UCFO a obtenu un engagement UKIPKƒECVKHFG Dairy Farmers of Ontario pour assurer le maintien du troupeau de vaches laitières du campus d’Alfred. C’est à travers la collaboration et la solidarité que nous réunirons les conditions nécessaires pour la création d’un nouveau campus tournée vers l’avenir qui répondra aux besoins de ses étudiants et de notre communauté. Summer fresh strawberries
Lise Gauthier displays baskets and baskets of fresh, ripe strawberries gathered from the fields at Ferme Claire et Robert of St- Pascal-Baylon. Those strawberries, and other fresh fruits and vegetables, drew several second looks and a lot of interest frombrowsers at the vendors alley section of the annual Wendover Western Festival over the mid-July weekend. As summer gets into full swing, residents of EasternOntario and other parts of the pro- vince are urged to take precautions against the risk of either Lyme disease or West Nile virus. When out in the woods, wear long- sleeved clothing, closed-toe footwear with socks pulled over pant legs, and a hat or cap to reduce the chance of ticks, which may carry Lyme disease, from crawling onto the skin. Do a body check after coming in from outside and be careful to remove any ticks found, following up with a full shower or bath. Check pets for ticks also if they were outside. For mosquito prevention, wear long-sleeved clothing when outside, make sure all door and window screens are in good condition, and empty standing water out of bird baths or outdoor flower pots on a regu- lar basis. Keep lawns and shrubs trimmed. When outside, always put on insect repellant to discourage mosquitoes or ticks. Watch out for ticks and mosquitoes Summer blood donors The summer season is in full swing but at least 90 people from around the Clarence-Rockland area found time to spend an hour at the July 10 Canadian Blood Services donor clinic held at the RiverRock Inn to offer a unit of blood to help save lives.
