Recycling This Holiday Season BY CHASE KAMMERER

You can gift the corrugated packaging industry back this holiday season by recycling any corrugated cardboard box- es you receive because nearly all old corrugated containers (OCC) are used to make new paper products. But what about other gift packaging that's not so obvious? See below some common gift packaging and whether you can include it in your recycling bin this year. Toy Packaging: Yes and No. Toy packaging is usually a mix of transparent thin plastics and paperboard. You'll need to separate the paper from the plastic - the paper is recyclable, but the plastic is not. Wrapping Paper: Yes and No. Most recycling companies accept wrapping paper (both regular and glossy) or have special programs for collection and drop-off. Still, you'll have to check with your municipality or recycling center. Visit Earth911.com to search recycling options in your area if your recycling collector does not accept wrapping paper. Wrapping paper that is metallic, has glitter, plastic, or vel-

The Corrugated cardboard boxes and other fiber-based packaging are recyclable, but the same is not true for all packaging you might come across this holiday season.

Whether you live in an urban or a rural area, you have options for where your waste ends up when you no longer have any use for it. Re- cycling and waste centers see a lot more waste this time of year. Even

vety flocking on it is not recyclable. Try reusing wrapping paper that isn't recyclable, or think about using reusable gift bags next year. Ribbons and Bows: No. Ribbons and bows are not recyclable. Ribbons, like plastic bags, get stuck in conveyors or clog gaps meant to separate waste and can cause entire recycling lines to shut down. Make sure to reuse those ribbons and bows instead. Need real-time recycling information for your community? The Recycling Partnership has launched a beta version of a chatbot fea- turing real-time answers for what's recyclable in your community. If you are searching for even more recycling options for your holiday waste, check out Ter- racycle's website for companies offering recy- cling solutions for those hard-to-recycle items. ISM: Manufacturing Growth To Continue Into 2023 Economic improvement in the U.S will contin- ue in 2023, say the nation's purchasing and supply management executives in the De- cember 2022 Semiannual Economic Fore- cast. Revenues are expected to increase in 15 of 18 manufacturing industries and 14 of 18 services-sector industries. "Manufacturing's purchasing and supply executives ex- pect to see overall growth in 2023. They are pessimistic about overall business prospects for the first half of 2023 but project growth returning in the second half. According to the ISM Report On Business, manufacturing grew for 29 consecutive months from June 2020 through October 2022, but dipped into contraction in November after de- clining in five out of the previous six months. Respondents expect raw materials pricing pressure to increase in 2023, but still see H1 2023 profit margins improving over H2 2022. Wages and employment will continue to grow. Man- ufacturers also predict growth in both exports and imports in 2023," says Fiore. In the manufacturing sector, respondents report operat- ing at 88.4 percent of normal capacity, up 0.8 percentage point from the 87.2 percent reported in May 2022. Pur- chasing and supply executives predict that capital expen- ditures will increase year over year by 2.6 percent in 2023, compared to the 12-percent increase reported for 2022 compared to 2021. Manufacturers expect employment in the sector to grow by 3.9 percent in 2023 relative to December 2022 levels, while labor and benefit costs are expected to increase an average of 5.8 percent. Respon- dents also expect the U.S. dollar to strengthen against the currencies of seven major trading partners in 2023. The panel predicts that prices paid for raw materials will increase 2.5 percent during the first five months of the year, with an overall increase of two percent for 2023.

6-percent increase in 2022). The manufacturing employ- ment base is expected to grow by 3.9 percent and the services employment base is expected to increase by one percent in 2023. Compared to the first half (H1), growth in the second half (H2) of the year is projected to rebound. These projections are part of the forecast issued by the Business Survey Committees of ISM. The forecast was re- leased by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M, Chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, and by Antho- ny S. Nieves, CPSM, C.P.M., A.P.P, CFPM, Chair of the ISM Services Business Survey Committee. Expectations for 2023 are positive, as 45 percent of re- spondents expect revenues to be greater in 2023 than in 2022. The panel of supply executives expects a 5.5-per- cent net increase in overall revenues for 2023, compared to a 9.3-percent increase reported for 2022. Fifteen of the 18 manufacturing industries expect rev- enue improvement in 2023, listed in order of largest to smallest projected increase: Plastics & Rubber Products; Transportation Equipment; Apparel, Leather & Allied Prod- ucts; Fabricated Metal Products; Primary Metals; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Printing & Related Support Activities; Furniture & Related Products; Machinery; Chem- ical Products; Computer & Electronic Products; Miscella- neous Manufacturing; Paper Products; Electrical Equip- ment, Appliances & Components; and Textile Mills.

FBA 2022 Year In Review: Boxes Are Still The Most Extraordinary Thing In The World BY DENNIS COLLEY Thank you to Fibre Box Association (FBA) members, industry suppliers and the thousands of workers who helped manufacture more than 40 bil- lion boxes in 2022. It’s become very apparent that the real hero of the supply chain is the corrugat- ed box – as it protects, ships, brands and provides a sustainable solution. At a time when countries, municipalities, and companies are banning some forms of packaging, the corrugated box is heralded as the poster child of recycling. Our industry has worked hard to establish systems and best practic- es generating a 90+% recycling rate. Boxes are the most extraordinary, ordinary thing in the world. The slowdown in the U.S. economy has certainly impacted the de- mand for boxes. Third quarter year-to-date stats show corrugated indus- try shipments are 2.9 percent lower than 2021 YTD, on an aver- age week basis. Just a reminder, these num- bers come after two record-setting years, 2020 and 2021, for box shipments. On a positive note, the Na- tional Retail Federa- tion forecasts Novem- ber and December holiday retail sales will grow between 6-8 percent over 2021 to between $942.6 billion and $960.4 billion. The lack of qualified plant floor labor continues to be one of the top priorities for our industry. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legisla- tion has now been approved in Maine, Oregon, California and Colorado. It is anticipated that up to 12 states will follow with approved legislation in 2023. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently evaluating the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in products and packaging to determine if they present a danger to humans and the environment. Supply chain issues with the availability of starch and other additives continue to plague our converting plants, while equipment de- liveries are stalled waiting on electronic components. Looking ahead to 2023, FBA will be focusing on several key areas: • Redesigned FBA website • More easily accessible data on any device • Continuation of the Corrugated Industry Promotion Program (CIPP) • Completion of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using 2020 data • Customer meetings with leading retailers and brand owners I am excited about 2023 and the opportunities it brings to the corru- gated packaging industry. Thank you for your continued support. I wish everyone happy holidays. Dennis Colley is President/CEO of the Fibre Box Association. • Re-establishment of the Human Resources committee • Completion of the pallet overhang research project Dennis Colley

They just started in the industry or they are 10 years into it, there’s no judgement and everyone’s willing to help each other out.” Now in a leading position as an elected EL delegate, Frisch helps select speakers within the industry to present in the C-Suite series, a quarterly virtual webinar. Whether focused on operations or sales or accounting, they share their stories and best leadership advice. The most recent C-Suite speaker was Jim Akers of Akers Packaging Ser- vices Group, along with his son, Andrew Akers, an Emerg-

ing Leader graduate, whose presentation was finding the best fit customers for your operation. “Everyone that they’ve had on has been remarkable,” Pyle said. “They have learned so much from these C Suite programs.” The annual Emerging Leaders Workshop in Fort Worth, Texas, was a three-day event that featured box plant tours and lead- ership trainings.

Frisch also helps develop the content for the spring meeting and offers a friendly face to new members. “I’m the Emerging Leaders go-to person with any questions or advice, and then I have a team as well. I have a junior delegate, John McQueary with CTS Systems and a freshman delegate, Jordan Dawson with Harris Packag- ing, who help me with the virtual and in-per- son events. Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Before moving directly into her sales role at PCA, she was in GIFT program, rotating through different depart- ments including design, customer service and production to develop a more well-rounded view of the company’s capabilities as well as the corrugated industry. Coming Together As Leaders While YP members represent competing companies, the program allows them to meet as individuals focused on personal development and becoming better leaders. “That’s the beauty in all of this, coming together to cre- ate those spaces where you’re able to build on your skill- sets and grow as an individual, which is the driving force behind programs and events we develop,” Sharesky said. Frisch said the EL program is a great introduction to AICC where they meet face-to-face with hundreds of its members and dozens in the EL program who each care about the other’s success. “It’s really just open engage- ment all the time,” Frisch said. Learning Is Reciprocal Many in the EL program are or were in the process of becoming presidents of their own companies or taking over the reins of a family business like Frisch. As they move up within their business, the program gives them a level of support and experiences that leads to them get- ting into those higher fields, said Taryn Pyle, Director of Education & Leadership at AICC. Those in the EL group engage with the more seasoned members of the industry, which opens the doors to the va- riety of jobs and positions in the industry. They learn more about the various roles in customer service, sales, and oth- er areas of responsibility. AICC’s Virginia Humphrey helped create the EL pro- gram and was followed by Scott Ellis, who facilitated the program before Pyle assumed the position last year. Mark Mathes, former owner of Vanguard Packaging and for- mer chairman of AICC was someone who pushed for the program that was envisioned to foster and embrace new ideas. TAPPI's Young Professional program was launched in 2014 and continues to grow each year. “Mark knew we needed young people in the business, as well as the association to continue to bring these really good new ideas and ways of looking at life,” Pyle said. “It wasn’t for a bunch of kids; it was for young people within our industry who had something to say. They could learn from us, but we could also learn from them, and I think that’s carried through year after year and, in my opinion, it just keeps getting stronger since they launched.” Visit aiccbox.org to learn more ELs. CORRUGATED REPLACEMENTS, INC. www.corrugatedparts.com

Mark Twain said there is no such thing as an original idea. He said we can turn old ideas into new, curious combina- tions, but he reckoned they are "the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages." Milkmen first showed up in Britain in 1860, arriving on horseback to deliver milk tins to people’s doorsteps. Newspaper and magazine presses sought to broaden their readerships and fund large printing runs through an- nual subscriptions in the late eighteenth century. Fast forward more than 200 years and direct-to-con- sumer retailers are now wielding the subscription box with a twist as their strategic prize-fighter in the battle for suc- cess. Now businesses from Netflix to Hello Fresh use the model, providing products and services on an ongoing ba- sis, to build brand loyalty and focus on customer retention. It just shows that we needn't worry about the novelty of ideas. And that innovation does not need to be new or original. It just needs to be valuable. Rekindling Popularity At one time, opening an online store and offering deliv- ery was a way for retailers to stand out. But now, the digital marketplace is crowded, and shoppers expect much more. To make a mark, your company must stay on top of e-com- merce trends and consumers' expectations. For many companies the COVID-19 pandemic set off a period of head-spinning change. They realized they could move faster than they ever thought possible. They went digital in a matter of days, not years. They offered new ser- vices almost overnight. Recent estimates suggest that E-commerce will register more than $6.5 trillion in sales by 2023, representing 22 percent of global retail sales. To capitalize on this, E-com- merce business owners will benefit from rethinking their channel strategies and focusing on building their brands. The subscription mailbox phenomenon – monthly mys- tery shipments of curated products – is not going away any time soon. To move the needle in online shopping, you'll need to know what trends impact consumers' behaviors and how you can leverage them. Consumers value the ease, convenience, and additional extras they can access A continuous stream of packaging innovations is just not viable. Still, you can ensure you do not fall behind the curve in consumer expectations. Ease of opening has long been a packaging concern for many shoppers. Any dis- cerning pack specifier or brand will know that packaging should never be a frustrating barrier to a product. Even when opening a special occasion gift or an exciting online subscription box, the initial buzz can quickly turn to exas- peration with a seemingly impenetrable pack.
