Leading home heating solutions company Grant has been selected as a finalist in the sustainability category of The Irish Times Innovation Awards 2021. The prestigious awards aim to recognise and promote the best service, product, or operational innovations throughout the island. Category winners will receive a €10,000 communications package and a one-year premium digital subscription to The Irish Times. The overall winner - selected from the category winners - will also receive a unique and high-profile communications and advertising package worth €100,000. Operating at the forefront of the heating industry for over 40 years, with its cutting edge sustainable and innovative product development, Grant is a trusted brand for homeowners throughout the country and has been nominated for its highly efficient hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel compatible Vortex condensing boiler range. Looking to the future and supporting the Climate Action Plan for over 50% reduction in emissions by 2030, Grant demonstrated its commitment to innovation and sustainability by embarking on an R&D project, representing an investment of over €250,000, to help existing rural and hard to GRANTSHORTLISTED FOR INNOVATION AWARD

heat homes reduce carbon emissions and help prevent homeowners from incurring the high cost and subsequent disruption to daily life of deep retrofitting. Founder Stephen Grant said: “We are delighted to be recognised for our innovation. Our breakthrough in the research and development of HVO- ready condensing boilers means that we have largely transformed to a renewable heating company with our portfolio, including ranges of biofuel ready condensing boilers, condensing pellet boilers, solar thermal panels, underfloor heating, hot water cylinders, aluminium radiators, and air to water air source heat pumps. “As a company, we remain committed to helping homeowners throughout Ireland

reduce their carbon footprint and future- proof their homes.” Stephen continued: “The HVO biofuel compatible Grant Vortex range of condensing boilers has the ability to help decarbonise over 1 million liquid fuelled homes in Ireland, in particular those off grid with poor thermal efficiency. Utilising HVO for heating will also help Ireland to significantly decarbonise existing residential homes, at a cost of approximately €500 per existing oil boiler installation when matching and changing to a new biofuel burner and substantially less if the boiler is already biofuel ready.” Grant will be competing against two other finalists in their category. FANTASTICYEARFORNAVIEN’SBLUEFLAME OILBOILERS

Navien is celebrating the sales performance of its LCB700 blue flame oil boilers in 2021, which saw the company achieve outstanding results and continue to lead the way in blue flame technology. Navien only manufactures oil boilers employing blue flame burner technology, ensuring its range maintains the highest standards of energy efficiency and performance, especially when compared to inefficient yellow flame alternatives. Renowned by installers and end-users alike, Navien already produces and sells over 200,000 oil boilers per year globally. Its blue flame units have established themselves among industry professionals for boasting efficiencies up to 104%, as well as ultra-low NOx emissions of only 57mg/ kWh – making the LCB700 the only domestic oil boiler capable of achieving an ErP A+ energy rating. Commenting on the natural evolution of oil boilers, Jason Davies, National Business Manager at

Navien, said: “We’re obviously delighted with the performance of our LCB700 blue flame oil boilers in 2021. It’s testament to their high levels of quality and efficiency that oil installers are embracing these products nationwide. “However, we’re not going to rest on our laurels, especially as the industry looks towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. That’s why we’ve developed our LCB700 blue flame range to be HVO-ready, which puts us in a great position as the UK moves towards decarbonising heating systems.” Available as either a regular, system or combi boiler, in both internal and external models, the highly efficient LCB700 blue flame is also lightweight (with lift weights from only 67kg), easy to handle and optimised for simple, fast and cost-

effective installation. www.navienuk.com

GRUNDFOS SCALA2 IS THE IDEAL CHOICE FOR A RANGE OF DOMESTIC APPLICATIONS… Great under pressure

W hen there is a need for a has the ideal answer with its SCALA2. Since they launched in 2017, these WRAS approved, fully integrated, variable speed, water booster pumps have been increasingly popular. The main reason for this is because they provide the perfect water pressure for up to eight water outlets – even with multiple taps and showers are running simultaneously. These clever little units combine the pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive and non- compact, whole house water pressure booster, Grundfos

return valve in one neat package, with integrated intelligent pump control. This means that the SCALA2 will automatically adjust its performance to meet both inlet pressure and water consumption demands. Additionally, the SCALA2 features a built- in sensor, which constantly measures the discharge pressure. If the pressure drops below the desired level, the SCALA2 immediately boosts its operation to compensate for the loss of pressure, resulting in the delivery of perfect water pressure. All this makes the SCALA2 the perfect choice for a range of domestic applications, as well as boosting from roof tanks, break tanks and ground tanks, including rainwater tanks. It can also be used with a break tank to boost pressure into a combi boiler or unvented cylinder system. The SCALA2s suction lift performance enables the break tank to be located up to 8m below the pump location - this includes boosting from wells. They also offer great value for money and with a noise level of 47 dB(A) in typical use, the SCALA2

Key features & benefits • Perfect water pressure: Intelligent pump control adjusts operation to ensure perfect water pressure at all times. • Low noise: With a noise level of 47 dB(A) in typical use, SCALA2 is one of the quietest boosters in its class. • Easy selection: One variant for all domestic applications. • Easy installation: Compact, all-in-one solution for perfect installation in no time. • Easy to operate: User-friendly control panel for easy set-up. • Water-cooled, permanent magnet motor. • Dry running protection.

CONEX BÄNNINGER LAUNCHES >B< PRESS FITTINGS IN IRISH SIZES... Press-fit is ‘coming home’

C onex Bänninger, a global leader in plumbing fittings manufacture, is “bringing press-fit home” to Ireland with the launch of its newly developed >B< Press range in original Irish sizes for copper pipe. The flame-free system is faster, safer and easier to use than traditional brazing and provides a secure and lasting leak-free joint, due to its three-point press. The cleverly designed press tool means that to change the jaw head for different sized fittings, plumbers and heating engineers need only place different inserts into a single

mother jaw, instead of replacing the complete jaw, saving even more time. The mother jaw and inserts come in a tidy compact transportable box, which is light and easy to carry, making it an ideal solution when on-site. >B< Press Irish can be used on hard or half hard copper pipe, conforming to ISEN 1057, and is ideally suited for hot and cold water services, heating systems, chilled water and oil-free compressed air applications.

system in markets around the globe. Garrett White, Managing Director of Hevac, said: “For us, Conex Bänninger is the perfect fit. They are renowned for producing high quality, innovative fittings, from being the first to introduce solder ring fittings to the market in the 1980s, to the more recent introduction of >B< MaxiPro press fit for air conditioning and refrigeration applications, and now Irish >B< Press. “The very clever design of the tooling, coupled with quality European manufacturing and a professional installation training and certification process, sets Conex Bänninger >B< Press apart. “>B< Press Irish is a very welcome addition to the Conex Bänninger suite of press solutions. With >B< Press in metric sizes, >B< Press

Inox, and >B< MaxiPro fittings and approved pipe already available and in stock, we are now a true one stop shop for press systems, covering the full heating, plumbing and refrigeration market.” As a purely mechanical joint, >B< Press Irish avoids any fire risk and requires no hot works permit or the carrying of heavy gas bottles and other hazardous materials. The fittings have the benefit of a three-point press, with one press either side of the bead and a third compressing the O-ring. In tests, press fittings are around three times faster to install than those that require brazing. WRAS approved, they also have a leak-before-press feature designed to leak at low pressures to highlight any joints that have not been pressed.

with Ireland’s plumbers and heating engineers in mind.

“Some are already familiar with our >B< Press in metric sizes, and it was only natural that we developed a complementary range in original Irish sizes so they can enjoy the extra productivity and benefits that press fittings bring. “It is particularly pleasing to be bringing press-fit home to Ireland, as it is the birthplace of the then revolutionary concept of using an O-ring seal in a crimp-type copper plumbing fitting, and its further development is a proud part of Conex Bänninger’s heritage.” Press-fit technology has grown exponentially in popularity and is now the preferred copper jointing

Fuels for Ireland, along with OFTEC and UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association (UKIFDA), has launched The Alliance for Zero Carbon Heating (TAZCH). TAZCH brings together the entire liquid heating fuels supply chain with manufacturers of boilers and those who service them, to highlight the critical role which advanced, sustainable, synthetic and biofuels can play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from heating in Ireland. It comes as research by consultancy firm

AECOM claims new liquid heating fuels could dramatically reduce emissions from domestic home heating. Its report - A Review of the Irish Residential Heating Sector – said the use of bioliquid blends in existing kerosene-based home heating systems is a viable way to transition away from complete reliance on kerosene oil. The analysis found a 50% bioliquid/kerosene blend would be optimal for the transition, in terms of attaining significant emission reductions while

remaining affordable for households. Further, the report concluded that, of the bioliquid-based options for heating, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) would deliver the greatest reduction in carbon emissions, at 86% per household (currently using kerosene) over a 10-year period. OFTEC IRELAND NEWS

Update:

DAVID BLEVINGS, OFTEC IRELAND MANAGER, SAYS STORMONT MUST EXAMINE ALL POSSIBLE OPTIONS ON THE ROAD TO NET ZERO…

DECARBONISING HEAT CONSULTATION SET TO ARRIVE LATER THIS YEAR... Government urged to avoid ‘one size fits all approach’ as poverty levels rise

N orthern Ireland is set to face a surge in the number of households in extreme poverty, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR). The NIESR predicts that all regions in the UK will see extreme poverty rise by more than 10% in the coming year. According to the BBC, poverty levels in Northern Ireland are estimated to rise by a staggering 67% in the year ahead, bringing “the total number of destitute households to about 25,000”. When you consider statistics like this, it is even more important that the Government considers a realistic approach when the Decarbonising Heat Consultation arrives

later this year. Living in a cold home can be both

physically and mentally harmful. No one should have to decide between eating or heating, but that is the reality that many are now having to choose between. We would urge the Government to consider that these are choices currently being faced, as the Decarbonising Heat Consultation approaches. 2022 will be a decisive year that will outline how people will heat their homes going forward in efforts to reach net zero targets by 2050. Both the Republic of Ireland and England have actioned plans for decarbonising this sector already. Northern Ireland has the benefit of being in a position that allows us to review and reflect on these approaches. In ROI, the Government is offering a grant of up to 50 per cent off a deep retrofit, however the average cost of these works is €56,000, which leaves a large bill for the homeowner to finance, and we don’t see how the savings offered will cover the remaining payments. Similarly, England has offered a £5,000 grant towards an air-source heat pump, however the total bill (including installation costs and any extra insulation works) is expected to be between £15,000 and £20,000. At a time when households are feeling the pressures of rising costs, it would be unrealistic for Stormont to expect a similar approach to incentivise households to decarbonise. Heat pumps and retrofitting will be the right choice for many living in a new,

David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager

thermally efficient, or recently built house, but for those facing financial difficulties and living in an older, colder home, there must be options considered that won’t leave them behind on the road to net zero. Heating oil is currently used in over 500,000 homes in Northern Ireland. A recent analysis by the AECOM engineering company showed that biofuels in home heating could achieve similar emission reductions to retrofitting, quickly and at a much lower cost. The current biofuel being promoted as the replacement for kerosene is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) that offers an immediate c.88% reduction in carbon emissions. Our message to Stormont would be to examine every option available, and to keep low carbon options and no regret pathways on the new Assembly’s agenda when considering the heating consultation later this year. A one size fits all approach must be avoided at all costs.

HEAT PUMPS CAN PLAY TO HELP REDUCE EMISSIONS, ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND LOWERING COSTS… Heat pumps are our lowcarbon future

D ecarbonisation is high on the agenda for current housing developments to lower carbon emissions from homes, with the average eco-home capable of cutting energy bills by 30%. Now is the time to act and start changing the way we heat and cool our homes. Air source heat pumps currently on the market are very reliable, are quiet in operation and highly energy efficient when compared to oil-fired boilers or electric heaters and can be play a large part in lowering carbon emissions. Further efficiencies can be achieved when linked to smart controllers to produce significant savings for heating and domestic hot water (DHW) provision. Manufacturers are currently increasing their offering of sustainable energy solutions designed for residential applications. An example is the Panasonic Aquarea air-to-water heat pump range, which has one of the widest ranges on the market, with options to suit most sizes of property and output requirements. These heat pumps, together with smart remote control such as the Smart Cloud and Service Cloud, monitoring, fault diagnosis and fault rectification technology provide

According to independent tests, the Panasonic Aquarea J Generation R32 Mini Monobloc range and 16kW Bi-Bloc T-Cap Super Quiet air-to water heat pumps have been confirmed to have impressively low levels of noise when in operation, with

independent tests confirming market leading noise levels of 60dB(A)1 whilst operating at full load. Marina Village Greystones in Ireland features 358 architecturally designed A-rated homes. All homes were installed with the Panasonic Monobloc Aquarea air-to-water heat pump because of their outstanding A++ energy efficiency rating. This project is more than just environmentally friendly, it’s consistently saving residents up to 50% on their fuel bills, 20% more than the average eco- friendly home is predicted to do. SMART CONTROLS Smart solutions, such as the Panasonic Smart Cloud and Service Cloud, can now remotely monitor the suction and discharge pressure of a unit to help reduce system down time, thus ensuring that they have a heating, cooling and hot water system that suits their individual daily needs. The Panasonic Smart Cloud and Panasonic Service Cloud have been introduced to the industry to enable direct communication between heat pump units and controllers. This integration allows building owners and

portfolio managers to view all their heating and cooling units anytime and from anywhere via a single interface and via mobile devices such as tablet, mobile or laptop, plus delivers actionable real time insights to help reduce energy consumption and drive savings. Using this smart technology, users can access a detailed breakdown of the system’s energy consumption from 60 minutes to seven days, and schedule the settings to ensure a constant and comfortable temperature throughout. This can help end users compare space utilisation and adjust the system so that energy is not wasted. It is crucial for installers to draw attention to this added value that a smart control system can offer these incredible benefits from the IoT revolution. In conclusion, by switching to air to water heat pumps to provide heating to our homes such as the Panasonic Aquarea J Generation with R32 refrigerants, housing emissions can be lowered significantly, plus residents can save up to 50% on their fuel bills. Air-to-water heat pumps are the future for the housing sector and an essential step in challenging the climate change problem.

SUSTAINABLE HEAT PUMP PAIRS WITH UNDERFLOOR HEATING TO DELIVER SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY… WarmflowZenogreat fit for Georgian-era home

The ZenoRange

The Zeno range of heat pumps are available in three outputs from 6kW to 17kW, and all are designed to work off standard single-phase domestic electricity. Key features include: • Low noise, high efficiency Mitsubishi/ Panasonic Rotary Compressors • User-friendly touchscreen interface • Fully integrated, variable speed, high efficiency pump • Electronic controlled expansion valves • High Flow heat exchangers with large surface area • Flow temperatures of up to 55 ºC means the unit can heat radiators, and your domestic hot water tank similar to a common household fridge, taking the warmth from the air outside - even when it’s freezing - and increasing the temperature to provide heating and hot water for your home. To find out more about Warmflow’s sustainable Zeno range, or if you have plans that need sized, please contact:

A ward-winning manufacturer Warmflow has helped to significantly boost the energy efficiency of a historic rural house, with the retrofitting of a more eco-friendly and cheaper heating system. The Warmflow Zeno air source heat pump was selected as the ideal solution to replace an existing oil boiler at the Co Armagh property – which dates back to Georgian times. The new pump provides heat for a space of around 2,000 sq ft. Installer Brian Graham, of Plumbrite, recommended this heat pump as it is one of the most efficient appliances in its class. Brian said: “The customer wanted the heat pump installed without a cylinder, so it only generates heat and not hot water. I selected the AS02 model of the Zeno heat pump to meet the homeowner’s needs. “The existing oil boiler, which was around 10 years old, was located close to an outside wall. This made it reasonably handy to fit the new heat pump on the exterior wall, and we used the existing flue hole to fit the pipes, so we didn’t need to carry out too much additional work.”

Michael McGirr, Technical Sales Manager at Warmflow, said air source heat pumps are becoming an increasingly popular choice for homeowners. “They can be easily integrated into heating systems, offer excellent energy savings and can help reduce the end user’s carbon footprint,” he added. “In this case, the homeowner wanted a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating solution for her home, and she has expressed her delight at the results. She also commented that the controller was extremely easy to use, with very little training needed. “Underfloor heating had already been installed in the property, and heat pumps and underfloor heating systems pair together very well. This is because the underfloor heating requires lower flow temperatures of 35 degrees, meaning the heat pump in turn uses less electricity.” Warmflow’s range of uniquely designed air source heat pumps harness natural heat energy from the air by blowing it through a highly finned evaporator coil. The Zeno heat pump uses technology

Tailor-made renewable heating solutions HEAT PUMP SPECIALIST BASSETTS WELCOMES RISING DEMAND FOR GREEN ALTERNATIVES...

B assetts has risen to meet the growing demand for heat pumps in Northern Ireland, offering a one-to-one service designing bespoke solutions for home- owners. The award-winning plumbers’ merchant specialises in providing renewable heating solutions, combining market-leading products with expert advice to help end- users find the ideal system to meet their individual needs. With its team of specialists designing tailor- made heat pump systems for numerous self-build clients each week, it is clear to see that more people than ever are turning to green alternatives to gas and oil. With the recent publication of the NI Executive’s Path to Net Zero Energy action plan, a greater push towards a diverse range of renewable energy sources such as heat pumps seems inevitable. However, Chris McCready, Manager at Bassetts Heating Innovation Centre, attributes the growing demand for heat pumps to the soaring fuel prices. “The record high level of gas prices in Northern Ireland has been a bigger driver of demand for renewable heating than anything the government has done to push people towards that technology,” he said. Chris explained that most of the heat pump solutions currently being designed by Bassetts are for new builds, as the cost of retrofitting a heat pump into an existing house can often be prohibitive. “Many people who are interested in changing to heat pump technology don’t realise that to retrofit one into their home can be a more expensive project, depending on how much work needs to be carried out to meet the criteria,” he added. “It really is more a new-build scenario in most cases, as to retrofit you need to look at the quality of your double glazing and doors, pump the external cavity, block any open fireplaces, get loft insulation, change

PTS PROVIDES ADVICE TO HELP BRING INSTALLERS UP TO SPEED WITH RENEWABLE HEATING SOLUTIONS…

Air source heat pumps – the low carbon lowdown

Grant Aerona³ heat pump.

T he next few years will bring many changes to the plumbing and heating industry, with legislation, the ban of traditional fossil fuel boilers, and the push for more renewable heating sources in homes. These changes are likely to herald the start of a period where homeowners either want, or need, to have lower carbon solutions for their heating, so this is a demand that installers need to be prepared for, says Ken Kinkead, Regional Director at PTS Ireland. REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS IN HOMES Introducing more renewable heating sources into homes is a key element of lowering our combined carbon footprints. One popular alternative to boilers are air source heat pumps (ASHPs). Some 20,000 units are installed every year, and

that number growing year-on-year. Unlike conventional oil, LPG, or gas boilers, ASHPs offer low carbon and energy efficient heating without relying on combustion to generate heat. Instead, they capture heat from the outside and move it inside the home to provide heating and domestic hot water. By using electricity to run the unit, the heat pump does not burn any fossil fuel and therefore emits no carbon dioxide. SOURCE TEMPERATURES Indoor heating systems that use low water temperature, such as underfloor heating (UFH), allow the heat pump to use less electricity and still heat a home comfortably. As such, ASHPs and UFH systems complement each other perfectly. You can still use radiators with ASHPs, but they must have a larger surface area to be compatible.

ProWarm- UFH systemsmade for heatingpros

As well as stocking all the leading ranges of heat pumps, PTS also supplies the UK’s largest selling brand of UFH, ProWarm. ProWarm water systems are available in single or multi-rooms, giving the efficient heating control throughout the home. The range of electric UFH systems pair well with heat pumps, area well suited for various floor coverings, and are extremely quick and easy to install. ProWarm has an experienced technical support team waiting to take calls from customers, and its design teams consist of experts who can provide quotes using customers’ own plans or drawings. All systems come with a lifetime warranty, next day delivery and a 48-hours design service. Ask for a quote at your local PTS branch.

COST SAVINGS

The upfront costs of an ASHP makes traditional boilers much more affordable. However, in the long run, heat pumps combined with other energy efficient solutions such as solar PV, could provide customers with a significant opportunity to reduce their heating bills. NEXT STEPS PTS recommends that any installers interested in working with ASHPs should contact the manufacturers, as many of them offer free awareness and training courses.
