Grant has announced a new partnership with the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC), in a bid to support the acceleration of the decarbonisation of residential heating. Pat Barry, CEO at IGBC said decarbonising our homes is critical to reach carbon neutrality. “As it currently stands, the residential sector accounts for about one quarter of the energy used in Ireland,” he explained. “Grant is the first heating company to join our organisation as a partner member and we are looking forward to working with them to support the decarbonisation of our built environment.” The Government Climate Action plan requires Ireland to install 600,000 heat pumps by 2030. Gordon James has completed 40 years at the firm – a specialist division of Haldane Fisher – while Cormac Cranney and Ricky Kelly have both reached their milestone 25 years. Ricky’s career path has led him

through many roles as he progressed within the department in many branches, including the Isle of Man and setting up the plumbing department in Larne, before moving to Ladas Drive in East Belfast, where he has run the department for the last eight years. He said: “When I started with the company, we had only four branches

- we have seen steady growth in the branch network to the 17 branches we have today.” Speaking of his time at Haldane Fisher, Cormac said: “The evolving of Plumbmaster has really put Haldane Fisher plumbing and heating out there. Fuels for Ireland, along with OFTEC and UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association (UKIFDA), has launched The Alliance for Zero Carbon Heating (TAZCH). TAZCH brings together the entire liquid heating fuels supply chain with manufacturers of boilers and those who service them, to highlight the critical role which advanced, sustainable, synthetic and biofuels can play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from heating in Ireland. It comes as research by consultancy firm

AECOM claims new liquid heating fuels could dramatically reduce emissions from domestic home heating. Its report - A Review of the Irish Residential Heating Sector – said the use of bioliquid blends in existing kerosene-based home heating systems is a viable way to transition away from complete reliance on kerosene oil. The analysis found a 50% bioliquid/kerosene blend would be optimal for the transition, in terms of attaining significant emission reductions while

remaining affordable for households. Further, the report concluded that, of the bioliquid-based options for heating, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) would deliver the greatest reduction in carbon emissions, at 86% per household (currently using kerosene) over a 10-year period. DECARBONISING HEAT CONSULTATION SET TO ARRIVE LATER THIS YEAR... Government urged to avoid ‘one size fits all approach’ as poverty levels rise

N orthern Ireland is set to face a surge in the number of households in extreme poverty, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR). The NIESR predicts that all regions in the UK will see extreme poverty rise by more than 10% in the coming year. According to the BBC, poverty levels in Northern Ireland are estimated to rise by a staggering 67% in the year ahead, bringing “the total number of destitute households to about 25,000”. When you consider statistics like this, it is even more important that the Government considers a realistic approach when the Decarbonising Heat Consultation arrives

later this year. Living in a cold home can be both

physically and mentally harmful. No one should have to decide between eating or heating, but that is the reality that many are now having to choose between. We would urge the Government to consider that these are choices currently being faced, as the Decarbonising Heat Consultation approaches. 2022 will be a decisive year that will outline how people will heat their homes going forward in efforts to reach net zero targets by 2050. Both the Republic of Ireland and England have actioned plans for decarbonising this sector already. Northern Ireland has the benefit of being in a position that allows us to review and reflect on these approaches. In ROI, the Government is offering a grant of up to 50 per cent off a deep retrofit, however the average cost of these works is €56,000, which leaves a large bill for the homeowner to finance, and we don’t see how the savings offered will cover the remaining payments. Similarly, England has offered a £5,000 grant towards an air-source heat pump, however the total bill (including installation costs and any extra insulation works) is expected to be between £15,000 and £20,000. At a time when households are feeling the pressures of rising costs, it would be unrealistic for Stormont to expect a similar approach to incentivise households to decarbonise. Heat pumps and retrofitting will be the right choice for many living in a new,

thermally efficient, or recently built house, but for those facing financial difficulties and living in an older, colder home, there must be options considered that won’t leave them behind on the road to net zero. Heating oil is currently used in over 500,000 homes in Northern Ireland. A recent analysis by the AECOM engineering company showed that biofuels in home heating could achieve similar emission reductions to retrofitting, quickly and at a much lower cost. The current biofuel being promoted as the replacement for kerosene is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) that offers an immediate c.88% reduction in carbon emissions. Our message to Stormont would be to examine every option available, and to keep low carbon options and no regret pathways on the new Assembly’s agenda when considering the heating consultation later this year. A one size fits all approach must be avoided at all costs.

A ward-winning manufacturer Warmflow has helped to significantly boost the energy efficiency of a historic rural house, with the retrofitting of a more eco-friendly and cheaper heating system. The Warmflow Zeno air source heat pump was selected as the ideal solution to replace an existing oil boiler at the Co Armagh property – which dates back to Georgian times. The new pump provides heat for a space of around 2,000 sq ft. Installer Brian Graham, of Plumbrite, recommended this heat pump as it is one of the most efficient appliances in its class. Brian said: “The customer wanted the heat pump installed without a cylinder, so it only generates heat and not hot water. I selected the AS02 model of the Zeno heat pump to meet the homeowner’s needs. “The existing oil boiler, which was around 10 years old, was located close to an outside wall. This made it reasonably handy to fit the new heat pump on the exterior wall, and we used the existing flue hole to fit the pipes, so we didn’t need to carry out too much additional work.”

T he next few years will bring many changes to the plumbing and heating industry, with legislation, the ban of traditional fossil fuel boilers, and the push for more renewable heating sources in homes. These changes are likely to herald the start of a period where homeowners either want, or need, to have lower carbon solutions for their heating, so this is a demand that installers need to be prepared for, says Ken Kinkead, Regional Director at PTS Ireland. REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS IN HOMES Introducing more renewable heating sources into homes is a key element of lowering our combined carbon footprints. One popular alternative to boilers are air source heat pumps (ASHPs). Some 20,000 units are installed every year, and

that number growing year-on-year. Unlike conventional oil, LPG, or gas boilers, ASHPs offer low carbon and energy efficient heating without relying on combustion to generate heat. Instead, they capture heat from the outside and move it inside the home to provide heating and domestic hot water. By using electricity to run the unit, the heat pump does not burn any fossil fuel and therefore emits no carbon dioxide. SOURCE TEMPERATURES Indoor heating systems that use low water temperature, such as underfloor heating (UFH), allow the heat pump to use less electricity and still heat a home comfortably. As such, ASHPs and UFH systems complement each other perfectly. You can still use radiators with ASHPs, but they must have a larger surface area to be compatible.
