The money would come out of the 2011 surplus. A second part of the resolution concerned another 2012 budget revision to allocate $115,727 to pay the expenses of engineer- ing consultant firm, CH2MHill Canada Ltd., for costs related to Phase 2 of the munici- pal-rural waterworks project. A long discussion followed about the CH2MHill fee and the waterworks project. It The Nation | Slow driving beats speeding when drunk but it is still no defence when the police write the ticket. Construction crews are working on repav- ing the road section now after installation of 30 pieces of a new underground storm sewer drain below the highway OC Transpo had scheduled two new double-decker buses for express routes to and from the east end during the partial closure of the highway. The second part had $40,000 allocated in the 2012 budget revi- sion to pay expenses for CH2MHill Canada Ltd. Public transit scheduling, including out- of-town connections is now almost back to normal. Meanwhile Mayor Watson has asked the city manager for an immediate inspection of all municipal storm sewers and drains located along critical municipal roads that are similar to the one that col- lapsed beneath the highway and is blamed for the sinkhole situation. Regarding the sinkhole itself, the mayor wants an independent investigator’s report within 90 days confirming the actual cause of the sinkhole, whether or not it is a result of the underground storm culvert collaps- ing. The report must also determine what, if anything, city officials and staff could have done that might have prevented the situa- tion. Mayor Watson noted the report will also help city staff determine if current inspec- tion procedures for municipal infrastruc- ture are adequate or need changing. All these reports are in addition to the planned overview of the municipal as- set management strategy planned for the Sept. 19 meeting of council’s finance and economic development committee. Advice and information on commuter route planning while sinkhole repair work continues remains available at www.otta- wa.ca, at www.octranspo.com, or through the city’s Twitter page (@ottawacity).

Centraide vise 350 000 dollars

MARTIN BRUNETTE martin.brunette@eap.on.ca

Council will review the report, which will include an evaluation of the design, cost and sched- ule for completing the OLRT, and decide whether or to accept the recommendation. Ottawa area farmers receive drought tax relief offer

Ottawa | There is help for farmers in the Cumberlandward andother rural portions of the National Capital region sucked dry in the past summer drought. Ottawa city council gave the green light to a property tax relief proposal dealing with farmlands in the rural wards. The plan calls for an amendment to the municipal farm grant program to allow an extension on property tax due dates. “Last month,” stated Mayor Jim Watson in a news release, “I asked staff to explore all options to provide support and extend a helping hand to farmers who are experi- encing economic hardship as a result of the severe summer drought.” Under the amended program any farmer who is registered for 2012 will have an ex- tension on the final 2012 property tax pay-

ment from Dec. 6 of this year to April 25 next year. The interim 2013 property tax due date is also extended to April 25, 2013. Also 2012 participants in the farm grant program will receive a grant to cover any penalties and fees that would be normal for the period from the original property tax due date of Dec. 6, 2012 to the revised due date in April 2013. The farm grant program is a property tax mitigation process that allows eligible farm- ers to defer final property tax bill payments to December instead of the usual due date in June. The program provides grants to eligible participants to cover the due date penalty fees. The extension of the December due date to April of next year is a simple revision of the existing program process.
