L’ouverture de la rampe avait initialement été prévue pour le 15 octobre prochain, chose qui ne pourra pas se réaliser, selon Brandy Duhaime, coordonnatrice régionale des communications au bureau du ministère du Transport de l’Ontario. Des problèmes de température ont causé le retard. La reconstruction d’une dizaine de kilomètres de l’autoroute, en direction ouest entre la sortie du chemin Barb et celle de la route 34, devrait être complétée d’ici la fin de novembre, selon Mme Duhaime. – Francis Racine CONSTRUCTION DE LA RUE CAMERON Le personnel des travaux publics de Hawkesbury s’attend à ce que le projet de reconstruction de la rue Cameron soit complété d’ici la fin novembre. Un rapport de mise à jour présenté au conseil municipal indique que de nouvelles conduites d’aque- duc et d’égout sont maintenant en place à partir de l’intersection de la rue Main jusqu’à l’extrémité sud du 284, rue Cameron. Malgré la présence inattendue d’un grand nombre de roches, les responsables s’attendent à ce que le projet de 2,75 millions de dollars ne dépasse pas le budget prévu. – Gregg Chamberlain
Les équipes de Cornwall Gravel lissent et remplissent les endroits rugueux de la nouvelle chaussée posée le long du tronçon de la route 34 près des intersections de la rue High et de la rue Main à Vankleek Hill. La réfection de la route 34 qui traverse le centre du village est maintenant terminée, y compris l’amélioration de toutes les conduites d’aqueduc et d’égout en aval et la création de nouveaux trottoirs. Hoffman, juste par précaution. » La plupart des gens pourraient aban- donner après deux inondations en l’espace de trois ans. M. Hoffman a une réponse toute prête lorsqu’on lui demande pourquoi il s’est donné tant de peine et dépensé autant d’argent pour construire son mur contre les inondations, au lieu de vendre sa maison. Sa famille vit dans la région de L’Orignal depuis plus de trois décennies, et son épouse et lui habitent la rue Montpetit depuis plus de 20 ans. « Je suis né et j’ai grandi sur (le bord de) l’eau, a-t-il expliqué en souriant. Je veux rester. »
Gerald Hoffman ne laissera pas la rivière des Outaouais le forcer à quitter sa maison. « J’ai été inondé deux fois en trois ans, alors je dois faire quelque chose », a expli- qué M. Hoffman, lors d’une pause samedi après-midi, des travaux de rénovation inté- rieure dans sa maison de la rue Montpetit à L’Orignal. Ce jour-là, la tâche était facile et agréable : repeindre les étagères de la cuisine. Plus tard, dans son horaire de fin de semaine, il fera du nettoyage autour du dernier ajout à sa cour arrière, une grande barrière d’inon- dation en béton. Plus tôt cette année, comme plusieurs autres propriétaires le long de l’extrémité de la rue Montpetit, M. Hoffman a vu la montée des eaux de la rivière des Outaouais inonder sa cour arrière, puis le sous-sol de sa maison. Le retraité de 72 ans avait subi l’inondation de sa maison au printemps de 2017. Cette année, il avait travaillé seul pour construire une digue de sacs de sable, tout autour de l’entrée arrière du sous-sol de sa maison. Mais cela n’a pas été suffisant. Les eaux sont montées encore plus haut que la digue de sacs de sable et ont inondé son sous-sol. M. Hoffman avait appris de son expérience antérieure en matière d’inon- dation. Il disposait de trois pompes et de boyaux portatifs prêts à aspirer l’eau et à l’envoyer à l’avant pour l’évacuer dans la rue. Plus d’assurance inondation L’inondation de 2017 a causé pour environ 130 000 $ en dommages à sa maison. Son assurance couvrait le cout des réparations à l’époque. Maintenant, sa compagnie d’assurance ne couvre plus les dommages causés par les inondations en vertu de sa police. « Ils m’ont payé à l’époque, a-t-il ajouté, et ils m’ont dit que c’était fini. »» Il a estimé que l’inondation du printemps dernier a peut-être causé deux fois moins de dommages que l’inondation de 2017. « Cette année, j’ai sauvé les meubles du sous-sol, a-t-il confié. Ça fait une différence. » Il espère être admissible au programme d’aide du gouvernement provincial dans le cadre du Fonds d’aide aux victimes des inondations, mais il n’en dépend pas. M.
Hoffman sait qu’il n’a pas les moyens de continuer à couvrir les couts de sa maison et de ses biens si la rivière des Outaouais continue de sortir de son lit année après année. Il a donc décidé de construire un mur. Au cours de la première semaine d’oc- tobre, les entrepreneurs ont stationné un camion de ciment à l’extérieur de la maison de M. Hoffman et ont versé du ciment dans un coffrage de bois installé dans une tran- chée profonde, devant les fondations de la maison. Il y a maintenant un mur de béton de 110 pieds de long, de sept pieds de haut et de huit pouces d’épaisseur, avec des barres d’armature, qui s’étend d’une extrémité à l’autre de la maison de M. How much should it cost taxpayers for local mayors to sit on the counties council? Russell Township Mayor Pierre Leroux has what he thinks is an easy and non-political method to calculate how much United Coun- ties of Prescott-Russell council members should get paid. “I would like to know what’s the impact if we go to a per resident rate for determining counties council salaries,” Leroux said during the UCPR council’s October 9 committee of the whole session. Leroux calculated that right now the an- nual stipend for each mayor on UCPR council breaks down to 25 cents per resident in the Prescott-Russell region, based on the most recent federal census figures. The Hawkesbury and District General Hospital (HGH) recently launched its Care program for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and elder abuse. The program is designed to address the medical, emotional and social needs of victims in a safe and confidential environment and is available at the Emergency Department. A team of health care professionals specialized in trauma cases will support victims in a non-judgmental approach. In addition to emergency medical care, victims can receive prevention treatment for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Staff members will also be prepared to handle crisis, collect forensic evidence, provide information on rights of victims, and refer them to other community resources to ensure their safety. — archives

Kids from Vankleek Hill got quite the experience on October 9, during the Vankleek Hill Fire Department open house event. Held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the event was organized in order to highlight the importance of safety as well as to mark Fire Prevention Week. Kids were invited to check out the many fire trucks assembled for the event and were fed barbecued hot dogs. “It’s an annual event,” said Vankleek Hill fire chief Michel Martin. “It usually attracts 250 to 300 people. This year’s theme is Plan and Practice you Escape.” Amongst young visitors was two-year-old Mathias Styranka, accompanied by his aunt Sandra Robinson. kept on experimenting until 1975 when she experienced what she calls “my Japanese period” when geishas, shoguns, flower carts, and Mount Fujiyama flowed from her brush on satin sheets. Over the years Iriarte has continued enjoy- ing her experiments in styles and subjects, mediums and materials. She is comfortable painting children’s storybook characters and TV favourites for special party gift artworks or making a dream garden landscape bloom. She prefers working in large panels though now she is trying her hand at smaller works, including miniatures. Most of her work, as seen on display in her Arbor Gallery exhibition, incorporates images, styles, and themes from her South American heritage. One piece, in particular, “Why? (Amazon burning)” is her lament and protest about the fires devastating the Amazon rain forest.
“My Venezuelan Amazon is burning,” Iriarte said, pointing at the image of the girl in the painting which represents the Amazon. “She is holding her pets, all the animals of the forest, asking ‘Why? Why are you burning my home?’” Iriarte has a new project in mind that allows her once more to experiment with art. Heartbeats will feature a series of pieces portraying various types of music and musi- cians from around the world. She expects to have it ready for show in September 2020. «Why ? Art lets Rita Iriarte say what is in her heart in a language anyone can understand. “They say that an image is more than a thousand words,” Iriarte said during an interview October at the Arbor Gallery in Vankleek Hill. “I have been doing it (art) for 56 years now, and I think I’m finally getting good at it.” Iriarte smiles and laughs at her modest comment. Now living in Chute-à-Blondeau, Iriarte has been exhibiting her bright and colourful works for 25 years. Ma raison d’être , on display at the Arbor Gallery until November 3, is her 123 rd exhibition. Originally from Venezuala, Iriarte explains how she fell in love with painting in 1963 while taking lessons in watercolour and
