Le plus haut taux de diplomation pour le CSDCEO

Les étudiants du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) ont obtenu le plus haut taux de diplomation des comtés de Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott et Russell. En effet, selon un communiqué du CSDCEO, 93,4 % des élèves du conseil auraient obtenu leur diplôme. C’est la deuxième année consécutive que le conseil obtient un tel honneur. L’obtention du Diplôme d’études secondaires de l’Ontario (DÉSO) viendra couronner, pour la majorité des diplômés, 14 années d’études au sein des écoles catholiques de langue française. Ils auront tous acquis les notions nécessaires les menant vers un bilinguisme de haut niveau. « Année après année, je suis fier de constater la réussite de nos finissants.

Comme énoncé dans notre mission, nous visons la réussite de tous les élèves, a fait valoir François Turpin, directeur de l’éducation et secrétaire. Drainage projects proposed Clarence-Rockland city council has contracts coming up for two drainage improvement projects in the municipality. The committee of the whole has recommended approval of a contract worth $200,810, not including HST, with Normand Excavation Inc. for the street drainage improvement project for sections of Marquette, Vaudreuil, and Lasalle streets. The contract bid is less than the $275,000 allocated for the project during the 2015 and then the 2016 municipal budget plans.The committee also recommended approving a contract with Amco Construction and Excavation Ltd. for the Champlain Road storm sewer replacement project. A homeowner in Bourget has a “Mother Nature” vehicle accident insurance report to file. The wind storm that roared over the Clarence-Rockland area Monday evening ripped the limb of a birch tree in the front yard of the Durivage residence and dumped it on top a car parked nearby in the driveway. The limb left behind a dent in the car roof after its removal but other than that caused no other harm. All that’s left now, other than filing an insurance claim, is to finish the job the wind began and clear away the debris. —photo Gregg Chamberlain

Soirée inoubliable – Unforgettable

Mme Diane Berniquez ainsi que sa fille Cynthia L. Berniquez de Rockland ont toutes les deux obtenu leur diplôme dans le cadre de la soirée de la remise des diplômes de la Cité Collégiale qui s’est tenue le 8 juin dernier. Diane a reçu un certificat en Stérilisation d’instruments médicaux à l’âge de 48 ans et sa fille Cynthia, agée de 20 ans en a reçu un en Techniques de Réadaptation et de Justice Pénale. Diane a décidé de retourner à l’école après un arrêt de 32 années. Bien connue dans la région, elle a déjà travaillé à la Maison de Xin, Chez Dunn’s et a assuré le déneigement de la neige à l’église. Son tout dernier emploi fut commis au magasin Bulk Barn. Sincères félicitations à ces deux personnes dont le dynamisme mérite d’être souligné. « Wow quelle belle opportunité de pouvoir célébrer cet accomplissement entre mère et fille! Highways minister confirms money for County Road 17

In 2008, both the provincial and fede- ral governments declared they would each provide $40 million for rebuilding the County Road 17/Highway 174 link between Rockland and Orléans to four-lane status. Today’s announcement fromDel Duca pro- mises $40million in provincial funding just for revamping the County Road 17 portion of the route. Ward 1 councillor Jean-Marc Lalonde, who lobbied the province for years on the highway improvement issue when he was Glengarry-Prescott-Russell’s Liberal MPP, noted that Del Duca’s announcement re- presents a doubling of the provincial govern- ment’s previous commitment to upgrading the County Road 17 section of the highway connection between Rockland and Orléans- Ottawa. His sole concern now is that similar funding be available for the Highway 174 portion, which belongs to the City of Ottawa, to avoid traffic congestion problems at the Canaan Road intersection where the two halves of the highway connector meet. BothDel Duca and Desjardins noted that discussion continues with the City of Ottawa about expansion of the Highway 174 section up to the TrimRoad intersection in Orléans. “I’m sure other people are going to get on board,” said Desjardins. “We can’t have four lanes stop at Canaan Road. As long as I’m in office, I’ll keep asking. But right now the federal and provincial governments both seem to want to cooperate. We’ll just have to see what details come out.”

Plans for four-laning County Road 17 through Rockland are still on the table and now the provincial government has confirmed funding support for the project. Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca rolled into Rockland June 16 to an- nounce $40million for upgrading the nine- kilometre stretch of county road between the Landry and Canaan Road intersections east and west of town. “We are here as a committed funding partner,” said Del Duca, during an afternoon news conference in response to questions about whether the federal government will also provide matching funds. “I anticipate there will be other funding partners at the table.” Del Duca confirmed the $40 million is part of the 2016 provincial budget plan that includes a $2.1 billion infrastructure impro- vement program. The minister expressed hope that construction on widening the nine-kilometre section of County Road 17 could begin as early as autumn 2019, depen- ding on how fast the design and construction tendering processes went. «This is exactly the time we have to strike to get it right,” said Del Duca, adding that all three levels of government are in agreement on the need to deal with critical infrastruc- ture improvements. “These investments will help grow our province.”

30 ans de développement dans la région

La développement communautaire de Prescott-Russell (SDCPR) a célébré ses 30 ans le 16 juin dernier, à Chute-à-Blondeau, avec un 5 à 7 sans prétention qui a laissé la parole aux acteurs économiques de la région. Le directeur général John Candie a accueilli les convives avec un petit jeu- questionnaire sur l’année 1986, où tout a commencé pour l’organisme, qui a pour mission d’animer le développement économique local dans la région. Des règnes de Brian Mulroney et Ronald Reagan aux actions de Don Boudria, en passant par une bonne blague d’uncle Buck, la soirée a été lancée avec le sourire. « Trente ans ainsi que des chiffres assez imposants, dont 25 millions $ d’investissements dans les petites et moyennes entreprises, plus de 3500 emplois créés et maintenus et un effet levier de plus de 60 millions $, a déclaré John Candie. La SDCPR a réussi à passer à travers deux récessions (1990 et 2009), une crise du verglas en 1998, des crises agricoles, des fermetures d’industries et des pertes massives d’emplois. Police seek two suspects in car theft case

Russell County OPP are asking for help from the public in identifying two men who are suspects in a case involving thefts fromseveral vehicles in the Rockland area. Police report the thefts took place May 17 evening and involve a number of motor vehicles in the Town of Rockland. Both are described as whitemen, between 20 and 30 years old. One stands about five-foot-ten, has a medium build, is unshaven and has short dyed blond hair. Hemay be wearing an orange fluorescent construction-type jacket. The other suspect is about five-foot-eight, with a slimbuild, and is unshavenwith short dark hair. Anyone with information on the identity of either or both of these suspects are asked to phone the OPP, toll-free, at either 1-888-310-1122 or at the Crime Stoppers confidential tips number at 1-800-222-8477.

Clarence-Rockland childcare fees under review

The suggested two-per-cent fee increase would boost the daycare’s annual revenue by about $261,000. Boucher observed that it could also result in a potential $78,000 operating surplus if there are no surprise expenses. Boucher also noted that some kind of fee increasemay be necessary to avoid a repeat of last year’s budget planning situation for the municipal daycare. He noted that there is almost no room for trimming of expenses. Staff salaries and benefits make up about 88 per cent of the daycare operating costs with materials and administrative costs accoun- ting for seven per cent and five per cent each. “We cannot reduce the operations bud- get without reducing services offered to the children,” he said, adding that themunicipal daycare must follow provincial operation guidelines. Council approved receipt of the report information and will wait for administration to follow up in August with further recom- mendations.

Clarence-Rockland parents using the municipal daycare may see a small inc- rease in their service fees come Septem- ber. How small an increase and whether or not it happens are part of a discussion now going on between council and city administration. “We’ll bring back three possible op- tions,” chief administrator Helen Collier told council during its June 20 committee of the whole session following a presen- tation from Community Services Director Pierre Boucher on the municipal daycare’s financial operations. Last year, council had to approve a one- time-only reserve fund allocation of $126,000 to the municipal daycare operation as part of the 2016 budget plan. That was to avoid a potential operating deficit situation for the daycare due to provincial government support funding cutbacks. La troisième édition du barbecue collecte de fonds pour CHEO et pour la Banque alimentaire de Rockland a eu lieu aumagasin de chasse Pronature, le samedi 4 juin dernier. Une centaine de personnes ont assisté à l’évènement, y compris les enfants qui ont bien profité de la structure gonflable tout au long de la journée. Un montant de 1350 $ a été amassé pour CHEO, ainsi que trois grands sacs de denrées non-périssables qui seront remis à la Banque alimentaire de Rockland. « Cet évènement est né, il y a trois ans, en tant que fête de fin de tournoi, mais s’est rapidement transformé. Ce sont les chasseurs qui redonnent à la communauté » a expliqué Deana Lafleur, copropriétaire de Pronature. Près de 140 personnes se sont inscrites à la première édition du Tournoi des Chevaliers de Colomb de Rockland, qui se déroulait le 11 juin dernier au Terrain de golf Outaouais à Rockland. Grâce à leur participation et aux contributions d’une quarantaine de commerçants, la somme de 7122, 3 $ a été remise à Valoris. Le gouvernement ontarien a célébré les contributions de plus de 11 000 bénévoles au cours de 54 cérémonies de distinctions, organisées à travers la province entre les mois de mars et de juin. Les distinctions reconnaissent des personnes qui, partout en Ontario, donnent de leur temps à des organismes comme la Croix-Rouge canadienne et les Guides du Canada, et participent à des projets communautaires bénévoles, par exemple l’organisation de foires scientifiques, la plantation d’arbres, des activités aidant les personnes âgées à rester actives ou encore l’accueil des nouveaux arrivants.
