Un incendie a ravagé, mardi après-midi, un immeuble de trois logements sur la rue Saint-Joseph, à Casselman. Les pompiers du Village de Casselman ont été appelés vers 12 h 20. À leur arri- vée sur les lieux, les flammes avaient pris d’assaut le troisième étage de l’immeuble. « Quand on est arrivé, c’était vraiment intense, mais ça a été contrôlé assez rapi- dement », a déclaré Alain Ménard, chef des pompiers de Casselman. Les pompiers de la caserne de Saint-Albert ont été appelés en renfort. Les résidents de l’immeuble, qui étaient à l’intérieur au moment où l’incendie a commencé, sont tous sortis sains et saufs de l’édifice, avant l’arrivée des services d’urgence. Les voisins de l’immeuble ont également dû évacuer leur logement. « Quand on a vu la boucane, on est sorti. Et quand on est sorti, comme il y avait beaucoup de fumée, on en a respiré beaucoup. On a dû se faire examiner par les ambulanciers », a affirmé Brigitte Beaudry, résidente de l’édifice voisin. Cette dernière a tenu à souligner le travail exemplaire des pompiers. « Le feu était vraiment gros et ils (les pompiers) n’ont pas lâché. » Une enquête est en cours pour détermi- ner la cause de l’incendie.

DON BOUDRIA’S PARK Groundbreaking for the new the Don Boudria Community Park in the new Avalon Encore subdivision takes place next year. Cumberland Ward Councillor Stephen Blais lobbied to have the $1.8 million neighbourhood park project named in honour of former MP Boudria, who began his political career in 1976 as deputy-reeve for Cumber- land Township. When finished, the community park will feature several amenities, including a Little League ball field, a dog park, play structures and more. – Gregg Chamberlain MUNICIPAL DRAIN MAINTENANCE APPROVED Russell Township council approved a recommendation from Infrastructure Director Jonathan Bourgon, for maintenance work on the Marshall Séguin Municipal Drain. A bylaw is required for this as the drain is shared between Russell Township and the City of Ottawa, with the township’s share of the maintenance cost at about 41.5 per cent, or $29,008. Ottawa is responsible for the remainder of the $70,000 total cost for the work. Both the City and the Township recover the money later from property owners with land served by the municipal drain. – Gregg Chamberlain
La Municipalité de La Nation s’est dotée d’un nouveau système de com- munication qui permettra désormais à ses résidents d’être avisés, dans les meilleurs délais, de tout se qui se passe dans la municipalité, que ce soit de façon générale ou de nature urgente. C’est l’annonce qu’a faite la municipalité le 23 avril dernier, lors d’une conférence de presse à laquelle assistaient les conseil- lers, des employés de la municipalité et le constable Luc Duval de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario. Avec ce système de communication, la municipalité sera en mesure d’envoyer des avis directement aux résidents qui s’abonnent au service gratuit. Les abonnés recevront automatiquement les avis reliés aux urgences pour être informés clairement de la situation. Ils peuvent choisir la façon dont ils veulent recevoir l’avis : par appel téléphonique, par SMS, par courriel ou encore en combinant ces trois façons. « Nous sommes fiers d’offrir ce nouveau service aux résidents de La Nation. À la suite de la dernière tempête de verglas, l’impor- tance d’avoir la capacité de communiquer directement et rapidement les avis impor- tants aux résidents, comme l’ouverture des refuges, est devenue claire », a indiqué le maire de la municipalité François St-Amour. « Et on peut en même temps éliminer les fausses rumeurs qui circulent, a ajouté le

Conformément à l'article 12 de la Loi de 1997 sur les redevances d'aménagement, tel qu'amendé, le Conseil du Village de Casselman tiendra une séance publique le mercredi 30 mai 2018 afin de présenter et d'obtenir les commentaires du public sur le règlement des frais de redevances proposés, les services de traitement des eaux usées et l’étude de fond sous-jacente. De plus, la réunion inclura une présentation des frais de raccordement modifiés du Village pour les services d'eau et d'eaux usées, ainsi que des frais de raccordement des eaux usées spécifiques à la zone de drainage 14 définie dans le quadrant nord-ouest du Village. &/#3&'r#3*&'4 OPP GUN AMNESTY AT MID-CAMPAIGN The OPP have safely secured dozens of weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, midway through a month- long Gun Amnesty campaign. As of April 16, 2018, there had been 218 gun amnesty calls in Prescott-Russell, 42 of which were received through online reporting on the OPP website. Since the launch of the gun amnesty, 267 items were recovere. These included restricted, prohibited, replica, and vintage weapons. Just over 5,200 pieces of ammunition were surrendered during this period. The gun amnesty will be in effect until Monday, April 30, 2018. – Michel Lamy

Le groupe souhaiterait toutefois voir la municipalité faire l’acquisition d’un banc. Également, le groupe demande que la muni- cipalité construise 15 bases de ciment sur lesquelles les bancs pourront être installés. La valeur totale de ces bases de ciment est estimée à 5000 $. L’enseigne, quant à elle, servirait à des fins communautaires. « On a un beau centre communautaire, et souvent, les gens ne sont pas au courant des évènements », a partagé .NF$BZFS%FTMBVSJFST&MMFTFSBJUJOTUBMMÊF au cœur du village, devant la garderie. Le groupe espère que le commanditaire principal de cette enseigne sera la Municipa- MJUÊEF-B/BUJPO1PVSDFGBJSF DFUUFEFSOJÍSF devra débourser un montant de 25 000 $. Le Groupe communautaire de Saint- Albert souhaite revitaliser l’image de son village. Pour y arriver, il souhaite ob- tenir une contribution de la Municipalité de La Nation. Les représentantes du groupe, Louise Cayer-Deslauriers et Andrée-Michelle Des- lauriers, ont présenté, lundi dernier, leurs projets au conseil municipal lors de la réunion. Le groupe veut installer 30 pots de fleurs à travers le village ainsi que 12 à 15 bancs de parc. Le groupe aimerait également doter le village d’une grande enseigne qui servirait à annoncer ce qui se passe dans le village. Il souhaite aussi procéder à l’installation de MVNJÍSFTEF/PÌMEBOTMFWJMMBHF Quant aux bancs de parc et les pou- belles, le groupe estime qu’ils sont plus que nécessaire. « On a deux résidences pour personnes âgées et on veut que ces aînés puissent se promener dans notre village. C’est aussi pour améliorer la beauté de notre petit village », a indiqué Mme Cayer-Deslauriers.

La province de l’Ontario a rendu hommage à six bénévoles de Casselman le 17 avril dernier. Pendant plusieurs années, ceux-ci ont tous consacré temps et énergie pour le bien-être de leur village. Ce faisant, ils ont remporté la Distinction de l’Ontario pour services bénévoles, qu’ils ont reçue à Cornwall. On reconnait, dans l’ordre habituel, les six bénévoles en question. Il s’agit de Claire Laflèche, Gilles Desnoyers, Jovette Richer, Madeleine Drouin, Guy Parent ainsi que Robert Deguire. C’est le conseiller municipal Daniel Lafleur, avec l’aide d’employés du Village de Casselman, qui a soumis les candidatures de ces personnes. M. Lafleur a tenu à féliciter une fois de plus ces bénévoles exceptionnels. Il souhaite aussi féliciter tous les bénévoles engagés à Casselman, « et on parle ici de centaines à remercier », a-t-il tenu à souligner. —photo fournie

For the fifth year in a row, Soins d’hygiène dentaire RDH in Embrun offered free dental care to people in the community in need, as part of the Gift From The Heart event. For the past ten years, many dental hygienists across Canada have been participating. The Embrun Clinic has helped a dozen people in the community - adults, children and seniors - by providing free medical care worth about $ 1700. Their local sponsors, Giant Tiger and Jean-Coutu, also attended the event and gave out donations, including toothbrushes, to clients. Other recipient causes over the years include Juvenile Diabetes, Foundation Fighting Blindness, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, Huntington Society of Canada, among others. “[A challenge] always coming up with new creative ideas,” said McFaul. We’re going Hollywood, so ‘Russellwood’, to put our own little cap on it, to make it unique and special for the ladies that come out to support it.”The organizing committee of the event is made up of seven women, along with numerous other volunteers who work on other specific outreach tasks and all the volunteers, many of them men, who come out to work during the event. Russell Ladies Night is back, for its 15 th year, to celebrate women while raising money for an important cause. Parkinson Canada has been selected as the cause of choice for the 15 th edition of Russell Ladies Night, an annual event held on the first Friday in May at the Russell Arena. The evening consists of a silent and live auction, dinner, live music, amongst other entertainment. Every year, 100 per cent of the money raised from both the silent and live auctions is donated to the recipient cause. The money raised this year will go towards research for Parkinson Canada. “We do this out of being a true volunteer,” said Judy McFaul, Co-Chair of the Russell Ladies Night organizing committee. “What we get back out of it is that maybe we are going to make a difference, in the long run, by helping out lesser known charities. The education and awareness part of it is important as well, for all of us.” Along with a recipient cause, every Russell Ladies night has a theme. “We will be doing it Hollywood style, so we will be celebrating all the events we have had over the last 14 years,” said McFaul. “We will have a Wall of Fame, similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, celebrating

BIG SUCCESS FOR RAPA’S ELLA’S LOUNGE

But the public will especially remember the extraordinary talent of some 20 musi- cians, who made up a rock choir, a pit band and an on-stage band, the dance crew led by choreographer Julia Gutzig, the five main actors, along with the work done by about two dozen crew members. Ella’s Lounge, a Rock Opera was so suc- cessful that the four performances sched- uled for April 18 to 21 all sold out. RAPA even added a performance for the morning of April 21. Kennedy served as the director, while Rama was the musical director and Sandra McNeill was the producer. At the end of the first presentation, Russell Township Councillor Cindy Saucier presented RAPA, on behalf of Russell Township, a Certificate of Congratulations and recognition for all the work done for Ella’s Lounge. Touching, funny and captivating, the Russell Association for the Performing Arts’ (RAPA) first original production, entitled Ella’s Lounge, a Rock Opera , has lived up to the expectations of the public during performances from April 18 to 21. There was talent on stage at Russell High School to present this original piece, co-created by local actor and musician Dave Rama, and local actor, director and teacher Kevin Kennedy. The play revolved around a father and a son who had the chance to reconnect by dialing a musical number to pay tribute to their late wife and mother, Ella. The writers were able to strike a balance with this touching production, incorporating a perfect dose of humor. The public will re- member, among other things, a scene where we find the on-stage band in the middle of

The pharmacists are up front to greet customers rather than having them walk through aisles of groceries , gift items or cosmetics.“Our vision was to make a new point of health care in Casselman to provide easy, accessible, timely care and being joined by a team of young medical professionals,” says owner/ pharmacist Michel Abdelmalak, supported in his comments by staff pharmacist Marian. In October 2017, the walk-in clinic opened. Dr. Elias El Salibi was the first physician to join the clinic and to start providing the deserved patient care in this underserved area. In January 2018, the Clinic announced that Dr. Power has joined the clinic, which is a great addition to the team.
