The Nation Municipality’s council has hired a new firm for the construction of the Limoges future sports complex. After canceling the contract with Saint Joseph Developments, at a cost of $250,000 in legal fees, the choice eventually fell to the Ottawa firm COLE+Associates. The construction project costs are estimated at more than $5.2 million, half a million more than the previous contract. MPP for Orléans Marie-France Lalonde presented the Sunshine Protection Act in Queen’s Park last week, calling for the end of Daylight Saving in Ontario by 2020. This would put an end to twice yearly time changes, pushing sunshine later in the day in Ontario. This would mean that the province would move clocks forward as expected in March 2020 and then skip the fall back time change in November, permanently leaving Ontario on daylight time. —archives

People in Prescott-Russell get to have their say about what kind of regional public transit service they want. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) and a consultant group, Axion, have set up an online survey, available in both French BOE&OHMJTI BU www.surveymonkey.com/r/ 135SBOTQP&/ to gather opinions from area residents about their needs for a regional public transit service. Access to the survey is available until May 10, and all data collected will help with route planning and scheduling. &BSMJFSUIJTZFBS UIFQSPWJODJBMHPWFSONFOU confirmed $1.5 million in support funding for the next four years towards the development and operation costs of an intermunicipal transit program for Prescott-Russell. Part of the plan includes linking PR Transpo with all local public transit services. The Easter Bunny hopped his way to Russell on April 13. The sight of the world-famous animal was witnessed by several children and their parents, during the Russell Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast. “We had over 150 people so far,” explained incoming President of the club, George Rogers. “It’s more than last year, when we had 100 participants.” The man was at the helm of the welcoming table and greeting several families. “The event is steadily growing,” he remarked. The funds raised by the breakfast are used to support mostly local not-for-profit organizations as well as the deaf and blind. Many children were even offered chocolates by the Easter Bunny. Amongst them was a young Carrie Warren. “It’s our first time being here, the food was great,” said Kim Warren, the little girl’s mother. “Carrie is definitely star struck from meeting the Easter Bunny.” As of press time, the total amount of funds amassed was unavailable.

Le Centre récréatif d’Embrun aura un nouveau nom afin d’honorer la mémoire et l’héritage d’un homme local dont la vie a enrichi la communauté. Le conseil municipal a approuvé à l’una- nimité la demande d’un groupe de citoyens de la région de renommer l’installation de la SVF#MBJTFOMIPOOFVSEF$BNJMMF1JDIÊ6OF délégation, qui comprenait des membres de la famille Piché, a présenté la demande au conseil au début du mois d’avril. On a demandé à l’administration de pré- parer un rapport sur la politique municipale de dénomination des bâtiments publics et sur le processus standard de renommage d’un bâtiment existant. de dire non à une demande qui aiderait la communauté et ferait de la municipalité un endroit où il fait bon vivre. L’administration du canton préparera maintenant un budget et un plan pour la cérémonie officielle de changement de nom du centre récréatif d’Embrun, qui aura lieu plus tard dans l’année.

Voici trois façons d’encourager la protection des animaux sauvages : 1. Réduisez votre empreinte écologique : réfléchissez aux impacts que peut avoir votre style de vie et préférez les solutions vertes. 2. Faites du bénévolat : informez-vous sur les espèces en voie de disparition dans votre région et voyez s’il existe des programmes pour leur venir en aide. 3. Sensibilisez les autres : au travail, à l’école ou sur les réseaux sociaux, par exemple, pensez à sensibiliser les gens que vous connaissez afin qu’ils entreprennent à leur tour des actions et contribuent à protéger la faune. Le 22 avril, Jour de la Terre, est l’occasion idéale de se conscientiser à l’environnement. Le thème choisi cette année pour cet évènement est « Protégeons nos espèces ». Pour en savoir davantage sur les baisses des populations animales au Canada et pour découvrir différentes manières de protéger la faune et la flore, lisez ce qui suit. CHIFFRES ALARMANTS Le Canada compte de nombreuses espèces emblématiques, comme le caribou, l’ours polaire ou le narval. Malheureusement, plusieurs espèces sont en déclin. La Fédération canadienne de la faune (FCF) estime que plus de 600 espèces de plantes et d’animaux risquent l’extinction. Le Rapport Planète vivante Canada de 2017, réalisé par le Fonds mondial pour la nature (WWF), a notamment révélé que la moitié des espèces de vertébrés avaient subi un déclin d’en moyenne 83 % depuis 1970. CAUSES VARIÉES Le déclin de la faune mondiale correspond à la croissance exponentielle de la population humaine et des industries. Au Canada, les causes de l’extinction des espèces sont multiples : la croissance des villes, le réchauffement climatique, la pollution, la surpêche, etc. Cela dit, quelques études ont permis de calculer l’impact des interventions gouvernementales dans la protection de la faune. Ainsi, si le nombre d’espèces en danger est énorme, certains facteurs de risque ont diminué et quelques espèces ont pu prendre de l’expansion et s’éloigner du seuil d’extinction.
