Residents and Beachwood Community Services Patrons,

Council President Alec Isaacson

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. I get it, and soon, we will have our own dedicated outdoor courts later this year. Pickleball is fun, accessible, social, and a desirable amenity for our residents, one that we look forward to providing. In the meantime, the Community Services Department has something special to offer regarding pickleball for children. If you’re an enthusiast and/or you would like to see your children introduced to this growing sport and gain some new skills, you can sign them up for pickleball classes this coming spring/summer. The gym at Hilltop will serve as a temporary facility. We are offering: • After School Pickleball • Summer Pickleball Camp Also, we will have some open pickleball play for all ages at the tennis courts this summer. I’d like to call your attention to some other special opportunities. Our Fitness Park features a few class opportunities this summer (page 21), but it’s always open for independent use daily, from dawn until dusk, in City Park East. We have a few new special events worth your consideration too: • Fire Station Open House May 7, 12-3 PM, Public Safety Center, 3777 Richmond Rd. Food trucks, demonstrations, facility tour, vendors, trucks, kids challenge • Barkwood Brunch June 25, 11 AM-1 PM, Beachwood Truck Park, 24619 Chagrin Blvd. Drink specials, games and socializing with other Barkwood members • Disco Night July 13, 8-10 PM, BFAC Swim under the lights, plus music, games, activities, dessert trucks I hope you will take advantage of the many chances for fun, fitness and fulfillment found within these pages!

residents and businesses in Beachwood to change their exterior lights to blue to show support for law enforcement. Stop by Beachwood City Hall beginning May 1 to pick up your blue light bulb (supplies are limited) to place in your porch light for the week. Can’t change your bulb? Wrap your tree with a blue ribbon, place a blue spot light in your yard or wrap blue cellophane around your light. The Thin Blue Line and flag meanings: The blue line represents the men and women of law enforcement who stand in the gap between the lawless and the innocent. The black background represents the men and woman who have died defending that line.

Morning STEAMers Instructor: Classroom Antics

Minecraft Coding Instructor: Classroom Antics

This year we are introducing a camp that will teach our younger STEAMers how to do interactive robotic programming and artistic coding with fun STEAM brain breaks. Our littlest campers will start their day using the fun VEX 123 robots. They will learn how to give the robot instructions that it will follow exactly. Through the week they will have numerous challenges to get their robot to and through. Mission accomplished will be followed by laughter and cheers! We will break up the time with Six Bricks activities - fun and creative brain breaks. After our (hopefully outdoor) play break, our STEAMers will enjoy coding and art using Scratch Jr, completing one or more activities each day. This camp will be appropriate for beginning readers that have completed kindergarten, first or second grade. Register at ClassroomAntics.com. Ages: 6-8 years | Session Length: 1 Week Location: Beachwood Middle School

Don’t just play Minecraft, create your own worlds with coding! If your child loves Minecraft and wants to learn how to design and program new ideas into their worlds, then join us in this awesome camp! Kids become the ruler of their own world by learning to control mobs and creatures and learning to change, customize and edit their tools and weapons. Kids learn how to code with a block-based visual programming language inside MinecraftEdu, using if-then and while-do statements, variables and loops. With these STEM tools, they automate processes inside Minecraft rather than just play Minecraft. Redstone is used to create circuits, switches and to control objects. Register at ClassroomAntics.com.
