Hawkesbury OPP warn about the Unlucky 7 Cons list

The CRA does not call or email taxpayers demanding payment on any outstanding tax debts and does not have the authority to send police to make an arrest. The “family emergency/grandparent scam”, is another scam. It mainly targets seniors, trying to convince them that a grandchild is in trouble and needs either bail money or a loan for travel expenses, a medical emergency, or some other reason. The “Mystery Shopper” scam is simple. The con artist claims to represent a “mystery shopping” outlet that does price compari- sons for its business clients. The victim is asked to help evaluate the customer ser- vice of a local MoneyGram or other kind of storefront cheque-cashing outlet in return for a “finder’s fee” payment. A “cheque” is sent to the victim involving a large sum of
money.The cheque is taken to aMoneyGram or other such outlet, cashed, and the bulk of the funds, minus the “finder’s fee” for the victim, then forwarded to another “mystery shopper” who is in actual fact the con artist. The cheque-cashing outlet later discovers the cheque is a fake and the victim is forced to repay the money lost. Other scams include the “Microsoft Anti- Virus”, “Internet Service”, and the “Internet Phishing” scam.These scams depend on the victim not being too knowledgeable about Internet sales services and systems. Such scams may lead to identity theft. Last of the “Unlucky 7” is the “fake charity donation” scam, which is becoming more common as con artists rely on sympathy for people and groups in trouble as a result of natural disasters and civil unrest or other causes. Businesses are also becoming amore common target to support alleged commu-
nity aid projects. These may be legitimate but the con artists may be using them as a cover for their scams. Anyone who suspects they are the target of a fraud routine should refuse to provide any information or provide any payments requested. They should report the incident to police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or www.anti- fraudcentre.ca. Residents and business owners who want to be better informed about the most common fraud routines, how to recognize them, what to do when approached, and how to avoid losing either their money or their personal identity can get The Little Black Book of Scams from the federal go- vernment’s competition bureau website at www.competitionbureau.gc.ca, and look under “Publications”.

The Hawkesbury OPP has had a few busy weeks, early in the year, dealing with com- plaints about con artists trying to scam their way into the bank accounts of area residents with the Unlucky 7Most Popular fraud routines. Police have received a number of calls about phony telemarketers and also people pretending to represent the Canada Revenue Agency.Therefore, police want tomake resi- dents aware of the Unlucky 7 most popular cons showing up again in Prescott County and surrounding areas. The “phony tax agent/Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)” scam is one such scam, whereby the con artist claims that the reci- pient is either overdue with a tax payment

Entente conclue entre Ivaco et ses syndiqués

Une entente sur un contrat de travail, d’une durée de trois ans, a été approuvée par une grandemajorité des employés du secteur de la fonderie et du laminoir d’Ivaco Rol- ling Mills, à L’Orignal. Cette nouvelle entente signifie de meil- leures couvertures en ce qui touche les soins de la vue, l’assurance-vie ainsi que l’assurance-invalidité de longue durée. La nouvelle entente offrira aussi une meil- leure protection contre la sous-traitance. Concernant les salaires, les employés de production et de métier pourront profiter Cette entente sur cette convention collective est une reconnaissance du travail acharné et des contributions quotidiennes des membres envers le succès de l’opération... d’une augmentation de salaire significative. Les employés de production verront leurs salaires augmenter de 1,50 $ à 3 $ de plus de l’heure. Quant aux employés demétiers, ils recevront une augmentation de 3,82 $ à 7,11 $ de l’heure. « Cette entente sur cette convention col- lective est une reconnaissance du travail acharné et des contributions quotidiennes des membres envers le succès de l’opération, a déclaré Marty Warren, directeur provin- cial du syndicat des Métallos. Ce nouveau contrat couvre les employés syndiqués des Métal- los, locaux 7940 et 8784, qui représentent environ 370 employés. Les membres des Métallos, local 9740, qui travaillent dans des bureaux et occupent des positions tech- niques et administratives, négocieront leur convention collective plus tard cette année, pour remplacer leur contrat qui se termine en novembre 2017. Le conseil municipal a donc dû abroger la résolution permettant à Canada Carbon de poursuivre ses démarches. La prochaine étape pour Grenville-sur-la-Rouge sera de désigner les zones ne pouvant pas accueillir de projets miniers. Le 13 décembre dernier, le conseil de ville avait approuvé une résolution permet- tant à Carbon Canada de poursuivre ses démarches auprès de la Commission de protection du territoire agricole du Québec (CPTAQ). C’était une première étape pour l’entreprise de Vancouver afin de poursuivre son projet minier, déjà fortement contesté. Carbon Canada devait démontrer à la CP- TAQ qu’unemine de graphite, ainsi qu’une carrière demarbre, seraient exploitées sans impact environnemental sur l’agriculture. Une journée après avoir adopté la réso- lution, des modifications ont été apportées à la Loi sur les mines, qui permettent aux municipalités régionales de comté (MRC) de délimiter, dans leur plan d’aménagement et de développement, des territoires qui ne sont pas compatibles avec des activités minières. À cet effet, une grande réserve de cerfs de Virginie se trouve tout près des terrains que la mine souhaite développer. Le conseil municipal a donc dû abroger la résolution permettant à Canada Carbon de poursuivre ses démarches. La prochaine étape pour Grenville-sur-la-Rouge sera de désigner les zones ne pouvant pas accueillir de projets miniers. Selon le maire Saywell, la décision qui a été prise en décembre dernier ne contreve- nait à aucun règlement existant. Par contre, cette modification à la Loi sur les mines a fait en sorte que lamunicipalité se retrouve dans un flou juridique selon ce dernier. Mais selonThomas Arnold, président du comité des citoyens, un regroupement qui s’oppose à un projet de mine à ciel ouvert, la résolu- tion du 13 décembre contrevenait déjà à des règlements existants. Une réunion spéciale du conseil munici- pal aura lieu ce soir, le 22 février, pour sou- lever la question des territoires inadéquats pour un projet minier. Une consultation publique aura également lieu ce soir au Centre communautaire de Grenville, suite à la réunion du conseil. Le 8 février dernier, la MRC d’Argenteuil a décidé, à l’unanimité, qu’elle se pronon- cerait sur le projet minier lorsque les études seraient conclues. Le conseil municipal de Grenville-sur-la- Rouge est revenu sur sa décision la semaine dernière et a abrogé une résolution, adop- tée le 13 décembre dernier, permettant à Canada Carbon de poursuivre des dé- marches pour l’établissement d’unemine à ciel ouvert.

during his earlier years with the agency in various other posts. “I can still remember the first time that I met Dennis,” Perrault said, adding that he mistook O’Grady for a student worker then, not realizing the other was SNC’s youthful general manager. Perrault noted that one of O’Grady’s great strengths over the years as a general manager is his ability to make sure that all members of the SNC board are aware and up-to-date on what SNC staff are working on and the projects and programs that the agency is involved in or trying to set up. He also observed O’Grady has demonstrated great respect and openness in dealing with the municipal members of the SNC region on the concerns of their communities. “Thank you verymuch from the whole of the watershed,” Perrault said. “He (O’Grady) cares so much for the watershed.” A formal celebration event for O’Grady’s official retirement day is planned for later in May at the SNC office in Finch. UCDSB health and safety report Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) received some good news at their Feb. 8 general meeting. The annual Oc- cupational Health and Safety Report for the 2015-2016 operations period shows the UCDSB continues to have a lower total of incidents or accidents resulting in lost work time, for the third year in a row, compared to other Ontario school districts of its size. Most incidents reported dur- ing the 2015-2016 term involved slips, trips or falls. The UCDSB will continue to promote the use of Yak Trax, a type of slip-on traction cover for boots and shoes for outdoor use, for its staff when necessary, and also continue with its workplace safety inspection program to identify potential hazards of any type.
