Once considered a pursuit for only the most intrepid of travellers, touring and adventure travel has evolved into a dynamic industry catering to a diverse array of travellers, seeking immersive and culturally rich experiences.
4
As we look back on the evolution of touring and peer into its future, it's evident that it has undergone significant transformations driven by the want for immersive experiences, tailor-made travel and diversity. In its earliest form, touring was reserved exclusively for explorers and pioneers. Renowned for their bravery and guided by a thirst for discovery, travellers set out on unprecedented journeys, venturing into unchartered lands, scaling unknown peaks and enduring the harshest conditions. From exploring the Amazonian rainforests to voyaging through the polar regions, touring throughout the nineteenth century pushed boundaries, requiring a high level of resilience and confidence. Venturing into the mid-twentieth century, the rise of commercial aviation and modernised infrastructure changed the landscape of touring holidays, shifting from remote exploration to widespread tourism. Distant destinations such as India, Africa and Southeast Asia become accessible through new air routes for a growing number of travellers, resulting in an influx of leisure travel moving away from imperial journeys, and switching focus to relaxation, scenery and further exploration. Arguably known as a ‘golden era’ for travel photography and film, the mid-twentieth century also provided a vast array of aspirational content in the form of
From thrilling adventures taking on the mighty Mount Everest, to up close and personal wildlife encounters on a South African safari, these destinations acted as a powerful source of inspiration. They sparked enthusiasm among families to connect with the great outdoors, whether through road trips, hiking adventures, or family holidays in scenic locations. As we look to present day, touring holidays have transformed from structured booked trips to highly personalised global adventures, with a strong focus on accessibility and diversity. No longer is adventure restricted to the rugged explorer but a broad travel category with options for all ages, abilities and interests. From leisurely strolls along gorgeous European rivers routes to adrenaline-fuelled skydiving in far-flung destinations, there’s activities to suit every type of traveller. We’ve also experienced a shift of travellers moving away from typical tourist destinations and instead journeying to destinations where they are able to fully immerse themselves within the local culture. From indulging in authentic food and drink to experiencing rural homestays in quaint villages, our expertly crafted touring itineraries ensure you’ll return home with memories to last a lifetime and a deeper understanding of the world around you. Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, exciting touring trends are shaping the way travellers choose to explore the world.
Culturally immersive experiences continue to grow in popularity along with personalisation, with travellers seeking tailor-made journeys designed around their individual interests, passions and life stages. With the touring landscape becoming increasingly diverse, we can’t wait to see what the future holds!
