Pierre Leroux is now the official Liberal candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell for the June provincial election. Leroux was acclaimed, April 13, as suc- cessor to retiring Liberal MPP Grant Crack, during a riding association meeting in St. Isidore. Traditional superstition has Friday the 13 as an unlucky day but Leroux saw it as a good omen for him and a bad one for his election competition. “It’s starting off well,” he said during a brief media scrum with local reporters following his confirmation, which included welcoming speeches from veteran senior Liberals like former GPR MP and federal cabinet minister Don Boudria, and Jean-Marc Lalonde, a longtime MPP for the riding under several premiers. Leroux named two key concerns he will

The other concern is the problem with the City of Ottawa “borrowing” Prescott-Russell ambulance service units to deal with its growing number of emergency calls, rather than expanding its own ambulance service. The situation often leaves Prescott-Russell without available ambulance units for its own emergency calls. “That’s something that affects us all,” said Leroux. “The first priority of a municipal (government) is to be able to protect your own residents.” “He won’t need on-the-job training,” said Boudria, during his congratulatory speech on Leroux’s confirmation. “He’s already trained to do the job. That’s why we need him as our MPP. He ‘gets it’. He knows what it involves to bring in big things for his area. He will do the same for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell as he did for Russell Township.” During his own acceptance speech, Leroux listed aid for infrastructure, expansion of natural gas service, improved Internet access, and local government autonomy among the needs and concerns for residents of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. He noted that the riding has a strong tradition of success with a teamwork approach when lobbying the provincial government on issues. “Together, we can do better,” he said, “and that’s the approach I want to bring at Queen’s Park. Our greatest strength in GPR is its people.”

Staff at the United Counties of Prescott-Russell are trying to get the regional fire dispatch project wrapped up before the start of summer. District fire chiefs are reviewing details of the proposed Request for Proposals (RFP) that the UCPR will issue this month, for a contract to set up a new regional fire dispatch system to serve seven of the eight municipalities within Prescott-Russell. Clarence-Rockland is part of the Ottawa municipal fire dispatch system and will not be included in the UCPR’s new regional setup. UCPR chief administrator Stéphane Parisien told counties council, during the March 14 committee of the whole session, that staff expect to have an RFP recom- mendation for counties council by mid-May. He noted that there is no allocation in

Drivers must stop when they see someone crossing the road at a marked pedestrian crosswalk. Comme partout ailleurs au pays, la Cité de Clarence-Rockland a rendu hommage, le jeudi 12 avril, aux Broncos de Humboldt de la Saskatchewan, qui sont morts dans un accident d’autobus le vendredi 6 avril. L’accident a fait 16 morts et plusieurs blessés. Clarence-Rockland – du personnel de la Ville aux élèves et enseignants des écoles et autres résidents de la communauté - a honoré les Broncos en portant des chandails de hockey ou un chandail vert. Les élèves de l’École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Trinité, ci-dessus, sont parmi les personnes qui ont porté leurs chandails de hockey en y ajoutant le logo des Broncos de Humboldt sur leur cœur. —photo Alexia Marsillo
LA PROGRAMMATION DU FESTIVAL WESTERN DE WENDOVER ANNONCÉE !
Quelque 300 personnes ont récemment rempli le Centre communautaire Lucien- Delorme, à Wendover, pour lui donner une allure country le temps d’une soirée. Cette soirée country, organisée annuellement par le comité du Festival western Optimiste de Wendover, a permis au comité de lancer sa programmation pour la 34e édition du Festival western de Wendover, qui aura lieu du 10 au 15 juillet. Cette année, en plus des activités qui ont lieu chaque année, telles que la parade ou la foire artisanale, les festivaliers auront l’occasion d’assister à un tour guidé de l’Ancienne Prison de L’Orignal et un spectacle d’humour sera présenté par Les 4 saisons de l’humour. Une visite de l’usine de traitement des eaux de Wendover est aussi prévue. Plusieurs chanteurs locaux prendront la scène d’assaut : Marc-André Lemieux, Frédéric Delorme, Andrew Charlebois, Roger Hamelin, Groupe SOP ainsi qu’Yvan Petit. Il y aura aussi des spectacles à ne pas manquer, On reconnaît, sur cette photo, les membres du comité du Festival western Optimiste de Wendover, organisateurs du festival. UN PREMIER ROMAN À L’ÂGE DE 17 ANS

l’histoire d’un adolescent passionné de soccer qui demeure dans une ville fictive du Québec. Cette ville a été ravagée par une catastrophe naturelle; une tornade. Ses habitants, dont cet adolescent, doivent donc apprendre à se remettre d’une telle catastrophe naturelle. Pour cette histoire, Lila A. Ndinsil a été inspirée par le feu de forêt qui a eu lieu à Fort McMurray en 2016. « Je me demandais comment les gens vivaient ce traumatisme, comment ils pouvaient retourner dans leur ville à la suite d’une telle catastrophe. Alors j’ai décidé d’écrire un roman à propos de ça. Mais au lieu d’un feu de forêt, c’est une tornade. Je voulais vraiment montrer comment chaque personne se remettait d’une telle catastrophe. » Ce roman a permis à Lila N. Ndinsil d’être parmi les auteurs présents au Salon du livre de l’Outaouais, qui a eu lieu le mois dernier. « Cette année, de pouvoir vivre le Salon du livre en tant qu’auteur a été une expérience très bénéfique pour moi », a-t-elle ajouté. Lila A. Ndinsil est présentement en 12 e année. Elle fréquente une école d’Ottawa et elle prévoit étudier à l’université en lettres françaises et éducation. Lorsque notre vœu porte malheur est le premier roman qu’elle a publié, mais certainement pas le dernier. « Il y en a d’autres en cours. Je travaille déjà sur trois autres romans. Pourquoi trois ? Dès que j’ai l’inspiration, il faut que j’écrive parce que je n’ai pas envie d’oublier mon idée » a-t-elle confié.
À l’âge de 17 ans, Lila A. Ndinsil, une ré- sidente de Rockland passionnée d’écri- ture, a publié son premier roman intitulé Lorsque notre vœu porte malheur. La jeune auteure crée des histoires depuis qu’elle sait écrire. « Je me souviens que dès que j’ai su comment écrire, j’ai écris ma première histoire, et après ça, j’ai continué, et j’ai continué… », a-t-elle partagé. Mais s’attendait-elle à voir l’un de ses textes être publié à cet âge ? Pas du tout ! « Je

savais que je voulais être publié un jour, mais je ne pensais pas que ça arriverait aussi rapidement. » En fait, c’est avec surprise que Lila A. Ndinsil a appris l’an dernier que son œuvre serait publié. C’est arrivé de façon ‘acci- dentelle’. Un jour, elle a reçu une invitation pour un cinq-à-sept littéraire, tenu par la Société des écrivains, la maison d’édition sous laquelle elle a été publiée. « C’était un évènement où on avait la chance de rencontrer des auteurs, des éditeurs et de poser des questions. Et on avait, par la même occasion, la chance de soumettre un manuscrit. Vu que j’étais en
train de travailler sur celui-ci, j’ai décidé de le soumettre. Mais ce n’était pas dans le but que ce soit publié. C’était plutôt dans le but d’obtenir des rétroactions. Alors je l’ai soumis et deux mois plus tard, ils m’ont répondu en disant qu’ils voulaient le publier ! », a raconté fébrilement l’auteure. Cet accomplissement donne à la jeune auteure un sentiment de fierté. « Tout au long du processus, je n’arrivais pas à le croire, mais là, de l’avoir concrètement, comme ça, dans mes mains, c’est un sentiment tout à fait différent, celui de savoir que j’ai accompli quelque chose comme ça ! » Ce roman d’environ 215 pages raconte

What comes to mind when you hear the word “camping”? A blissful tenting experience in the middle of nowhere? 1. Utilisez des sacs en tissu réutilisables plutôt que des sacs en plastique lorsque vous fai- tes des courses; 2. Bannissez les bouteilles d’eau en plastique (optez pour une bouteille réutilisable); 3. Dites adieu aux pailles en plastique — au restaurant, précisez au serveur que vous n’en voulez pas; 4. Apportez vos propres contenants lorsque vous allez chercher des plats à emporter au restaurant; 5. Évitez les produits suremballés (notam- ment en choisissant des aliments en vrac et à la découpe) et les portions individuelles; 6. Privilégiez autant que possible les emballa- ges de carton (optez pour du détergent à lessive en poudre, par exemple); 7. Préparez des lunchs exempts de plastique (utilisez des ustensiles en métal, des plats en verre réutilisables plutôt que des sacs je- tables de type Ziploc, etc.).

L’UNESCO estime d’ailleurs que ceux-ci causent chaque année la mort de plus d’un million d’oiseaux marins et de plus de 100 000 mammifères marins. En outre, selon l’ONU Environnement, si nous ne prenons pas les moyens nécessaires pour réduire la pollution des cours d’eau par le plastique, en 2050, les océans contiendront plus de matières plastiques que de poissons… En ce 22 avril, Jour de la Terre, l’organisme Tous les jours vous invite, comme chaque année, à célébrer la planète par l’action. Voici donc quelques gestes tout simples que vous pouvez poser pour réduire vos déchets plastiques à la source — et ainsi protéger l’environnement : 7 ACTIONS SIMPLES POUR RÉDUIRE LA POLLUTION PAR LE PLASTIQUE
