Protestors target Papanack Zoo... again

When the video was posted online, the OADL bumped up the schedule for a planned August protest to Saturday, with protestors gathered outside of the zoo, along to roadside, urging tourists to boycott the wsite. “We thought it was perfect timing to keep spreading the word,” said Michele Thorn, one of the protest organizers. Official confirmation of the video footage is not available yet as Papanack Zoo man- agement have not responded yet to media requests for comment.Thorn and other pro- testors dismiss the need for any comment or confirmation from the zoo about the video contents. “We saw the conditions ourselves from the roadside,” Thorn stated. “I know what I see, that’s proof tome. Hearing frompeople wasn’t enough.” The OADL and Animal Justice both want the zoo closed down. Papanack Zoo has come under fire in the past for the care and control of its exotic animal population. The Ontario SPCA stated that its staff are “aware of these animal cruelty allegations and are investigating.” Last year a lion that escaped from his enclosure at the zoo was shot and killed. Several years before one of the zoo’s white tigers dug its way to freedom after heavy rains had softened the ground at the foot of the wire enclosure of its cage. The tiger was found resting in the middle of County Road 19 not far from the zoo, recaptured
A video posted to the Internet froman ani- mal rights group pushed ahead plans for another protest gathering at the Papanack Zoo in Wendover. The Ottawa Animal Defense League (OADL) organizes regular protests outside of the zoo, which also functions as an ex- otic animals breeding station. The group advanced their latest planned protest to the August 12 weekend after Animal Justice, another animal rights group, posted a video on YouTube which it claims shows evidence of abuse towards some of the animals kept at Papanack Zoo. “We think it’s important for people to know the truth about what happens in zoos,” said Camille Labchuk, a lawyer and the ex- ecutive director for Animal Justice (AJ). Labchuk told media that the video was taken over a two-month period and the group alleges that a former employee of the zoo shot the footage. Labchuk stated that Papanack Zoo is confirmed as the location for the undercover video because of footage showing the facility’s owners and parts of its interior. The group claims the footage shows zoo workers allegedly using violence to con- trol sheep, separating a cougar cub from its mother, forcing raccoons to bare their teeth for a photo shoot, and discussion among staff about hitting a lion.

the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, is cur- rently in the first reading stage, in which the government will take proposed amendments into consideration this week. The bill will then go back for second and third readings in the House of Commons, after more proposed amendments by the committee. This bill is one of the few to go out to the public after the first reading – the usual process calls for public feedback only after twhe second reading in the House. Local business owners and employers from Rockland expressed their dismay of the government having taken their time to draft and revise this bill, yet only giving businesses less than a year to implement it. Almost all government representatives have made it clear that it is inevitable that some businesses will not survive this hike, but the argument made by many business owners is that they would have more of a fighting chance given amore reasonable time frame. Although Crack stated he would push for a compromise of increasing the minimum wage slowly to $15 over a three-year period, he is doubtful the government will budge. “More peoplemaking a larger salary equals moremoney to invest in the economy,” said Crack. “We cannot leave people behind any- more.” According to theMPP, the bill is expected to pass through its second and third readings in the House within the next month, leaving the bill to be voted on by the end of October or beginning of November. The Clarence-Rockland Chamber of Commerce organized a meeting on Tues- day, August 15, for local entrepreneurs and business owners to meet with Grant Crack, MPP of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, in order to bring forth their concerns and questions regarding the provincial govern- ment’s plan to increase theminimumwage to $15 by January 2018. Over 20 local business owners and appre- hensive residents showed up to voice their concerns. Most agree that the increase to $15 is not necessarily the problem, but it is instead the speed at which the government is moving forward with it. Minimum wage has been a hot topic throughout the province since Premier KathleemWynne proposed the increase at the end of May of this year, leaving its mark as the largest increase to theminimumwage in the province’s history. The proposal was announced as part of a plan to create better jobs, fairer workplaces and to give more than a quarter of employees in Ontario a pay raise. However, local business owners are fearful that the hike is too high, too fast and will leave themfinancially incapable of surviving the transition. “We are getting a lot of feedback, a lot of support for the bill but also concern from small businesses about impacts to their bot- tom line,” said Crack. Nouveau stratagème Les voleurs d’automobiles dans la région du grand Ottawa utilisent un nouveau stratagème pour attraper certaines de leurs victimes. La police d’Ottawa rapporte un incident récent où une femme s’était garée à une succursale d’une banque. Pendant qu’elle était à l’intérieur, elle a remarqué qu’un homme l’épiait. L’homme est alors monté dans une Dodge Caravan rouge. Après avoir terminé ses activités, la dame est repartie. Elle remarqua d’abord la Caravan rouge passant devant elle et une Toyota Matrix rouge se positionnant juste derrière elle. Elle a réussi à sortir du piège en faisant un virage en U. Comme elle s’éloignait, le capteur du tableau de bord du véhicule l’a avertie d’une faible pression dans un pneu. Une inspection ultérieure a révélé que le pneu avait été entaillé. La police avertit les autres automobilistes d’être attentifs à toute activité similaire – Gregg Chamberlain M. Foster, comme le démontre la photo, est un homme âgé, de cinq pieds neuf pouces et pesant entre 200 et 225 livres. Lorsqu’il a été vu pour la dernière fois, il portait une casquette rouge avec un logo Massey Fer- guson, un débardeur et des shorts rouges avec des rayures orange sur les deux côtés. Il avait des chaussettes noires aux pieds, mais pas de chaussures. Le rapport de la Police provinciale in- dique que M. Foster souffre de la maladie d’Alzheimer et peut ne pas répondre aux l’ouest sur le chemin de comté 2, à environ deux kilomètres à l’ouest de Curran.

Centraide Prescott-Russell et la Croix- Rouge canadienne feront équipe pour déterminer les besoins non identifiés à la suite des inondations printanières de 2017. Ils proposent de créer un comité de représentants des municipalités de Prescott-Russell touchées par les inon- dations, afin d’identifier leurs besoins à moyen et à long terme. L’objectif principal du comité est d’en- tamer une conversation pour identifier les besoins et venir en aide aux individus touchés par les inondations. Plusieurs résidents de Prescott-Russell ont été af- fectés par les inondations demai dernier. Plusieurs bénévoles ont donné de leur temps et les membres de ces commu- nautés, ainsi que plusieurs organismes, se sont mobilisés rapidement pour venir en
aide aux sinistrés. D’ailleurs, l’expérience démontre qu’à la suite d’un sinistre, les individus touchés peuvent ressentir du stress, de l’incertitude et des difficultés à composer avec le sentiment de perte qu’ils ont vécu. Ces besoins sont plus difficiles à déceler et semanifestent géné- ralement à moyen et à long terme. La Croix-Rouge canadienne a déjà ap- porté de l’aide immédiate dans les jours suivant les inondations et poursuit encore son analyse des besoins pour apporter un deuxième appui aux sinistrés admissibles. Centraide Prescott-Russell a aussi récolté des fonds pour les sinistrés des commu- nautés touchées de Prescott-Russell. La première rencontre de ce parte- nariat a pour but d’échanger de l’infor- mation.

membre bénévole au sein du comité des Parcs et Loisirs de Rockland pendant 12 ans, pour faire l’étude de l’amélioration et de la promotion des parcs. MmeMaisonneuve est aussi engagée au sein du Corps demajorettes de Rockland et est responsable des activités, en coopération avec l’école Sainte-Trinité. Présentement, elle se concentre sur son travail avec le Centre d’aide de Rockland, notamment la friperie où elle trie, classe et vend les vête- ments usagés. Mme Maisonneuve était en nomination pour la Médaille du souverain pour les bé- névoles à la Chancellerie des distinctions honorifiques, en novembre 2016, où elle était décrite comme une personne « simple, intègre, dévouée, responsable et joviale » - le bénévolat pour elle est une source de joie de vivre. Sur la Médaille du souverain figurent deux cœurs entrelacés pour illustrer la géné- rosité et la compassion ainsi que les mêmes cinq bandes dorées qui sont sur l’emblème du Prix du gouverneur général.

Elle lui a été présen- tée par le maire de Clarence-Rockland, Guy Desjardins, au cours de la dernière réunion régulière du conseil municipal, le lundi 7 août. Lily Maisonneuve porte beaucoup de différents chapeaux dans le domaine com- munautaire – elle a consacré de nombreuses heures au cours des quatre dernières décen- nies, et continue toujours, à faire du béné- volat pour la paroisse Très-Sainte-Trinité, le comité des Parcs et Loisirs de Rockland, le Corps des majorettes ainsi que pour le Centre d’aide de Rockland. Coiffeuse de profession, Mme Maisonneuve remplit ses temps libres avec la philanthropie et l’amé- lioration de sa communauté, simplement pour apporter de la joie aux autres. Depuis 1973, Mme Maisonneuve fait du bénévolat pour la paroisse Très-Sainte-Tri- nité en participant à la messe du samedi soir, en préparant les feuilles de chants et en aidant avec l’organisation des services funéraires. Elle a servi comme ministre de communion et acolyte et ensuite comme sacristine. Elle s’est aussi inscrite comme

Francine Poirier, la présidente du comité de loisirs de Bourget, a pris le temps de re- mercier chacun des partenaires. « Le comité du Splash Pad a accumulé plusieurs heures de bénévolat pour arriver à ça aujourd’hui, et la communauté s’est véritablement démar- quée dans la collecte de fonds pour le Splash Pad », a-t-elle fait valoir. Plusieurs activités pour les jeunes avaient été organisées pour l’occasion, y compris une course d’obstacles organisée par Bastien Physio, un kiosque de maquillage pour le visage, des ateliers de yoga organisés par la Maison de la Famille et Groupe Action. Une structure gonflable avait également été installée par les pompiers, qui ont été présents toute la journée. La chanteuse Jojo était aussi présente pour livrer quelques prestations et danser avec les petits. L’aménagement des jeux d’eau a eu lieu l’automne dernier. Les champlures ont été
ouvertes enmai. La conseillère de Bourget, Diane Choinière, a fortement encouragé la réalisation de ce projet. « C’est sûr qu’il y a des étapes à suivre et un processus à suivre, mais avec ce projet, tout lemonde a pensé ‘long terme’ », a-t-elle expliqué. La prochaine étape pour complé- ter le projet du Splash Pad est de construire
un gazebo, un projet de 50 000 $, dans le Parc de Bourget pour avoir de l’ombre et aussi prévoir des salles de vestiaire. La construc- tion du gazebo commencera cet automne, et devrait être prête pour le printemps pro- chain. « C’est vraiment encourageant », a ajouté Mme Choinière.
Dame Nature a collaboré avec la commu- nauté de Bourget, le mercredi 16 août, lors de l’inauguration des jeux d’eau dans le Parc de Bourget. De nombreuses per- sonnes et organisations de la communauté étaient présentes lors de cette journée vi- sant à souligner la conclusion de ce projet réalisé grâce à la collaboration de plusieurs partenaires. La communauté, en partenariat avec le Club Optimiste, le Comité de loisirs, le Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie et le Partage travaillait sur ce projet depuis 2015 – un projet qui a demandé beaucoup d’heures de bénévolat de la part de nom- breuses personnes de la communauté, sans compter tout le temps accordé à la collecte des fonds nécessaires.

Young, ambitious and far away from home

Charles Lu, a 12-year-old from Qingdao, China, came all the way to Rockland in order to better himself at a sport he loves somuch he cannot imagine himself doing much else. Only having started playing hockey less than a year ago – 10months to be exact – Lu is determined to take it all the way to the NHL and to be one of the very few hockey players coming out of China. “The only hockey I’ve ever seen is field hockey, not on ice,” said Lu. “But then when I came to Canada, I saw ice hockey and it looked really cool so I searched it on web- sites.” Last year, at 11 years old, Lu travelled to Canada for the first time as part of a student exchange programwith his school. He spent the better part of six months living with a family in Vancouver in hopes of improving his English – which is very refined, for the record. As for Lu’s feelings about Vancouver and his experience living there, he did not seem too impressed. “It just like rains every- day.” However, he is very pleased about how much the experience helped him improve his speech and his English accent. Before visiting Canada, Lu had already been to the United States, as he has rela- tives in Boston, and this is where he initially learned how to play ice hockey. “Actually, at first, I didn’t want to start playing hockey, because I wanted to focus on my grades andmy school,” said Lu. Lu spent almost six months in Boston with his mother, practic- ing ice hockey with his cousin, the same age as him and already an AAA player, and his uncle, a hockey coach by profession. “Before the NHL, my first goal is to be an AAA player and to be better than my cousin,” said Lu. This competitive spirit will go a long way for Lu throughout his hockey endeavour, and has kept him determined during his time at the Canadian International Hockey

Academy’s summer camp in Rockland. In- stead of shying away from the competition, he dives right into it, knowing that the only way to get better is to play with more so-
phisticated players. Lu spent two weeks at CIHA’s summer camp this August – one week practicing with the Forward camp and the second week with the AAA players. Almost all the other hockey players at the camp have been playing hockey for at least a couple of years, most of them for up to eight or nine years – placing Lu as the underdog of his group. Ice hockey is evidently not a very popular sport in China – Qingdao only has three hockey clubs and it is the largest city in the Province of Shandong with a population of over 9 million people. “When they pass the puck, I might not get it sometimes because of their level of speed and accuracy,” said Lu. “The difference of levels is my biggest challenge, but when you play with others that are stronger, you learn really fast.” The young player’s thirst for knowledge and self-improvement extends well beyond his 12 years of age and is not solely limited to the sport – Lu already plans on taking French courses with his school back home, as part of his plan to return to Rockland next
winter to continue his hockey training at the Academy’s camp. “I made a lot of friends in camp and in the dorms,” said Lu. “They don’t call me Charles, they all just call me ‘Chinese’ – it’s my nickname.” Lu’s independence is uncanny for a 12-year-old, yet he is still a boy at heart: excited to return home to China to see his parents after his two weeks alone in Rock- land. He is also intrigued by the idea of show- ing off some of his new skills to his friends in Qingdao. While talking about his future goals, Lu is reminiscent of a particular event that did not mean much to him when it happened two years ago, but that now holds particular significance to him – in June 2015, the first ever Chinese-born hockey player was drafted into the NHL. “Everyone in China celebrated for him,” said Lu. “My dream is to be an NHL player. It won’t be a hobby forever, it’s my goal, it’s the only thing I really want to be.”

The Bourget branch of the Clarence- Rockland Public Library hosted an event for families on Thursday, August 16, to discover the library and learn about its programs and services. There was also a used book sale, a hotdog stand, an arts and crafts table and a bouncy castle.The event capped off with a movie under the stars. Nouvelles directrices à l’école St-Paul et à L’Escale
Deux écoles du CSDCEO, soit L’École élé- mentaire catholique de Plantagenet et l’École secondaire catholique L’Escale de Rockland, auront de nouvelles directrices. L’École élémentaire catholique de Plan- tagenet accueille une nouvelle directrice, Maryse Legault. Mme Legault œuvre dans le domaine de l’éducation depuis 22 ans, tant en enseignement au niveau élémentaire qu’agente de l’éducation pour le ministère de l’Éducation de l’Ontario (MÉO) et pour l’Office de la qualité et de la responsabilité en éducation (OQRE). Mme Legault détient aussi deux baccalauréats en plus d’unemaî- trise en enseignement et en apprentissage. Chantal-Christine Gratton a été nommée nouvelle directrice de L’Escale. Avant d’accé- der à ce poste, Mme Gratton a été directrice de l’École secondaire catholique de Cassel- man et par la suite, de l’École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury. Elle a 17 ans d’expérience à la direction et à la direction adjointe des écoles du CSDCEO. Mme Gratton est originaire de la région et elle espère innover, transmettre ses qualités de leadership et offrir de nouvelles possi- bilités à la communauté estudiantine de L’Escale. « Ces personnes dévouées sont des lea- ders dans leur communauté respective et sont des modèles de construction identitaire francophone catholique », a déclaré François Turpin, directeur de l’éducation et secrétaire, par communiqué de presse. La rentrée scolaire pour les élèves des écoles catholiques françaises du CSDCEO est le mardi 29 août 2017. RUSC U16 girls heading to finals

The U16 girls’ teamof the RocklandUnited Soccer Club (RUSC) are on their way to the finals of the East Region Soccer League (ERSL) Shield after a 2-1 victory over Ottawa City on Sunday, August 20, at the L’Escale field in Rockland. The U16 RUSC boys’ team also had a semi-final game on Sunday, August 20, but with a less satisfying outcome. The team failed to advance to the finals after a 5-4 loss to St. Anthony Surad, in what was a consistent back-and-forth battle. The boys came close with a late penalty kick save by RUSC’s ZacharyWhittaker, but

The teamwill either play against Carleton Place United or Ottawa Futsal Elite. This same girls’ team won the Shield last year when they were playing in the U15 division.
