Bob Perrier of Vankleek Hill and Lynn Walter from Ottawa take Chewy, a friendly Labrador/Rottweiler cross, with them as they participate in the Fox Run at Voyageur Provincial Park in Chute-à-Blondeau on September 15. This year’s Fox Run for the East Hawkesbury, Champlain Township, and Hawkesbury region saw 48 participants and raised $1690 to assist cancer research.

Results show 13,142 students enrolled in CDSBEO schools since the new term began. CDSBEO enrollment for the previous term was 12,612, and for the 2017-2018 terms it was 12,556. For Prescott-Russell CDSBEO schools, student numbers are 713 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School and 445 at Mother Teresa Catholic School in Russell, 388 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School and 212 at Pope John Paul II Catholic School in Hammond, 305 at St. Patrick Catholic School in Rockland and 259 at St. Jude Catholic School in Vankleek Hill. – Gregg Chamberlain CHAMPLAIN TOWNSHIP TRAFFIC With a few exceptions, the amount of traffic has increased on roads throughout Champlain Township this year compared to previous years. The big exceptions are Domaine Chartrand, the section of Sandy Hill Road between Highway 34 and the Ste-Anne Road intersection, Ritchance Road near the Village of Alfred, and John Street. Public Works Director James McMahon told council some of the drops in traffic may be a result of summer vacation plans for some residents. He noted the traffic statistics help with future road paving plans. – Gregg Chamberlain ROAD NUMBERING REVIEW The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) may look at a review of its county road numbering setup, to help improve emergency services dispatch. The emergency services advisory committee will recommend that council consider approving such a review, after it received a report from the emergency services department on the number of county roads that cross municipal boundaries. In almost all cases the num- bering system for residential addresses then changed, which sometimes causes confusion for dispatch when sending fire, police, or paramedics to some calls. – Gregg Chamberlain UCDSB TALLIES NUMBERS Administration at the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is still working on an official enrolment tally for the 2019-2020 school term. The final figures should be ready by the end of October, in time to make the end-of-year submission deadline for the Ministry of Education’s provincial enrolment records. The UCDSB had 26,614 students in total among all its schools for the 2018-2019 term and district officials expect a similar number for the new term once the enrolment counts are done. – Gregg Chamberlain

Le Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario (BSEO) avertit les résidents qu’une substance extrêmement dangereuse appelée l’héroïne mauve ou purp circule dans la ville de Cornwall. Selon les rapports reçus, une substance bleue circule aussi. Ces substances peuvent être sous la forme de poudre ou d’une substance plus mastic ou plus dense comme de la roche. Le BSEO ne détient pas encore la confirmation d’un laboratoire par rapport aux composés de cette substance. La fin de semaine de la mi-septembre n’a pas été bonne pour Hawkesbury dans la Central Canada Hockey League alors que les Hawks ont perdu leurs trois parties sur la route. La première a été une défaite de 4-2 contre les Canadians de Carleton Place, vendredi dernier. Les deux équipes étaient presque à égalité dans leurs tirs au but et les Canadians ont eu un peu plus de chance d’enfoncer la rondelle dans le filet. Les Canadians ont dominé le tableau d’affichage en première période et Mark Cooper a marqué le premier but de la soi- rée avec l’aide de Ryland Mosley et David Gagnon. Gatineau returned the favour on Sunday, beating Saint-Isidore 8-5. The September 21 season opener has Gatineau hosting Saint-Isidore for an early rematch with the Cougars getting another chance at Saint- Isidore on Sunday night. The Clarence Creek Castors snuffed the West Carleton Inferno 5-2 in exhibition play, Saturday night, over the mid-September weekend. The South Grenville Rangers beat the Castors the following Sunday afternoon at the Clarence Creek Arena. The Castors face the Vankleek Hill Cou- gars for their opening game of the season on September 21. They return home Sunday afternoon to host the Bytown Royals.
The exhibition games are done and now it is time to get serious in the National Capital Junior Hockey League. All three of Prescott-Russell’s clubs in the NCJHL have had their shakedown sessions for returning veterans and rookie player additions to the roster.
