From the Chair Jeremy Johnson KSM
In the earliest days of the Canterbury Settlement, Maria Somes used her land entitlement to endow scholarships for the fledgling Christ’s College. That single act of generosity 175 years ago did more than help College survive its infancy. It established one of our strongest traditions: philanthropic support of the College by its community.
For generations since, our community has answered the call to give. Donors have endowed prizes – such as the Ormsby Medal and Maling Memorial Prize – and created scholarships that continue to recognise and support our boys.
Others have given to the fabric of our heritage campus. The Memorial Dining Hall – a tribute to the remarkably high number of Old Boys and staff who died in World War I – was only made possible due to donations. Likewise, the extension to our Chapel in the 1950s – also a memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. Since the 1970s, the Tothill Science Block, the Old Boys’ Theatre, and, most recently, Upper West were made possible by the generosity of those who believed in what College could be. Perhaps the most enduring legacy of that generosity is our scholarship programme. Largely endowed by Maria Somes’ original gift, it has ensured – for generations – that any boy talented enough to attend Christ’s College can attend, regardless of his family’s financial circumstances. Philanthropy will be just as vital to our future. Across Australasia, the United Kingdom, and North America, the independent schools that thrive are those whose communities invest in them. Donations enable cutting-edge facilities to be built, innovative programmes to be developed, and more students to attend on scholarships. At College, we have the aspiration to expand our scholarship programme further through additional endowments, so that even more boys can benefit from the education we offer. We also aspire to enhance the fabric of our school. College will only continue to flourish as a small, independent, Anglican school for boys, boarding and day – with the traditions of aspiration and excellence that have defined us for 175 years – if our community continues its proud history of giving. This is College’s first Philanthropy Report since 2015, and it serves three purposes: to acknowledge the generosity of our donors and the difference their support has made to our boys; to demonstrate the tangible impact that giving to College can have; and to articulate how philanthropic support advances our mission. To those who have contributed – thank you. In these pages you will see the impact of your generosity. And to those in our community who have considered giving but not yet taken the step, I invite you to read this report and see what your support could make possible. Every gift, at every level, helps shape the future of College and the lives of our boys. Bene tradita bene servanda .

Christ’s College Canterbury
From the Headmaster Joe Eccleton For 175 years, Christ’s College has stood as a testament to the generosity, vision, and faith of its community. From our earliest days, philanthropy has not simply supported College, it has sustained and shaped it. We exist today because of the commitment of Old Boys, current and past parents, staff, and friends who have believed deeply in the transformative power of a Christ’s College education and have chosen to invest in its future. Philanthropy is woven into the fabric of our history. Each generation has benefitted from the foresight and generosity of those who have gone before, and, in turn, has been called to contribute so that those who follow may benefit. It is through this spirit of giving that we continue to honour our heritage while building for the future. Support for College takes many forms. For some, it is participation in our Annual Appeals, which strengthens the day-to-day experience of our boys; for others, it is involvement in major capital campaigns, such as support for Upper West, our new state-of-the-art gymnasium; for others, it may take the form of private donations and bequests. Last year’s Annual Giving Day, dedicated to scholarships, was a particularly powerful expression of our community’s shared values. Through the generosity of donors, we are able to provide life-changing opportunities for boys who, due to financial circumstances, would not otherwise have access to a Christ’s College education. These scholarships do more than open doors for individual students; they enrich the entire College community and affirm our commitment to opportunity. We are profoundly grateful for the generosity of all who support College. Your commitment ensures that Christ’s College continues to flourish, faithful to its foundations and confident in its future.

Development Shelley Keach Senior Development Manager Running the development programme at Christ’s College continues to be a great privilege, and this past year has been both varied and rewarding. I am delighted that we are able to present this Philanthropy Report, which showcases the breadth and impact of giving across the College community. Many of the opportunities and initiatives we now enjoy would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors and sponsors. From ambitious building projects and the establishment of the College Museum, to supporting our sporting programmes and helping fund our annual drama productions, philanthropy continues to shape and strengthen the life of the College. I am deeply grateful to all of our supporters for their generosity, partnership, and belief in Christ’s College. I look forward to continuing these relationships together into the future.
Philanthropy in action
Andrew and Nicky Harrison are exemplary philanthropists whose generosity has made a
profound difference within the College community. Over the past seven years, they have funded basketball scholarships for eight boys who would otherwise not have had the opportunity to attend Christ’s College. Beyond financial support, Andrew and Nicky have extended extraordinary care and generosity, often welcoming these students into their home, and providing a warm and supportive environment during their time at College. Their impact has been life-changing. Several of these boys have gone on to attend college in the United States on basketball scholarships, reflecting both their talent and the opportunities made possible through this support.
Andrew also played a key role in establishing the current basketball programme at College, following the interest of Andrew and Nicky’s sons, Tom and Will. Since then, the programme has gone from strength to strength and continues to thrive.

Annual Appeal 2025 Each year, our Christ’s College community comes together with a shared purpose – to ensure that opportunity is defined by potential, not circumstance. In recent years, together we have resurfaced our much- loved Upper playing field, built a new museum, and, in 2025, raised more than $400,000 for scholarships. Those funds are transforming lives, and we see that impact firsthand. Our 2025 Head Prefect, Ihaka Cate, was a scholarship recipient. Growing up in Linwood, he once described arriving at College as “entering a castle – a place I never imagined I would be”. He embraced every opportunity – academically, culturally, and in leadership – ultimately serving as Head Prefect and becoming a role model for younger boys walking a similar path. He was not alone. Harrison Laing, our 2025 Head of Boarding, also benefitted from a Headmaster’s Scholarship during his time at College. Harrison was an inspiring leader to the younger boys, and often went above and beyond in his role, supporting the new boarders and ensuring that he was available when they needed to talk to someone. Scholarships change trajectories – not just for individual boys, but for families and future generations. As our Board Chair, Jeremy Johnson, reflects: “Supporting scholarships continues one of College’s original purposes: that any boy talented enough should have the opportunity to attend.” Our goal is simple – to ensure many more boys like Ihaka and Harrison have that same opportunity in the years ahead. To those who supported the 2025 Annual Appeal, thank you. Your generosity has given a young boy who may never have imagined himself here the lifelong gift of an outstanding education.
Potential begins with you. Help us build a boy’s future.

Christ’s College Canterbury
Ali Grigg Prize Old Boy Ali Grigg is a generous philanthropist and supporter of Christ’s College, and one of the early drivers of Xero, the global accounting software company. A lifelong believer in the power of education, Ali has supported – and contributed to – the development of the Christ’s College Diploma, year after year. The Ali Grigg Prize is awarded to the student who has achieved a Gold level of Academic Engagement and demonstrated a strong commitment to the ethos of Ngā Mihi Mātauranga in the Christ’s College Diploma. The recipient may not necessarily be the top academic student, but must have shown a growth mindset towards learning and a genuine commitment to achieving his personal best. For the first time, the 2025 prize has been awarded to two students, Alex Johnstone and Louis Sharr. Through the Christ’s College Diploma, students are encouraged to extend their learning beyond the classroom and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Students undertake service initiatives, environmental projects, cultural learning, and leadership opportunities that help develop a strong sense of global citizenship and responsibility. Alex Johnstone experienced this impact firsthand through his Diploma journey, which included extensive community service, tutoring younger students, environmental work, and volunteering with community organisations. Reflecting on the programme and the inspiration behind it, he shared: “The prize has had a positive impact not only in the College community, but in our local communities and further abroad too.” Louis Sharr also highlighted the opportunities created through Ali’s generosity. Through the Diploma, Louis contributed to environmental restoration projects, supported cultural initiatives, and engaged in leadership opportunities, both locally and internationally. As Louis reflected in his thanks to Ali: “Your award has opened up many opportunities and pathways for me.” Through Ali’s continued support of the Christ’s College Diploma and the Ali Grigg Diploma Prize, students are inspired to pursue meaningful service, leadership, and learning that extends far beyond the school gates.

Because of you Over the past five years, Christ’s College has benefitted enormously from the philanthropic generosity of our community. Our largest fundraising effort during this time was the campaign to build Upper West, our sports centre. It was truly a labour of love. The original vision was to construct the facility on the former Christchurch Girls’ High School site. However, through extensive engagement with the community, the project evolved into the beautiful facility we see today, built on our campus. It provides our boys with state-of-the-art sporting facilities and a home for the Physical Education Department. After Upper West opened, we returned to the community to seek support to restore our much-loved playing field, Upper – or, as some of our more senior Old Boys fondly call it, ‘the Hallowed Ground’. Then, in 2023, our appeal focused on building and opening the College Museum – a glorious space filled with the history of the school and stories about the boys who have attended. None of these projects would have been possible without the generosity and commitment of our College community. Thank you.

The power of sponsorship Shelley Keach Senior Development Manager Each year, sponsorship from our community empowers our boys to perform at their best and pursue their goals, ensuring they gain the most from their involvement in co-curricular programmes. In 2025, 47 sponsors supported College’s junior and senior drama performances, along with both winter and summer sports programmes.
Rugby and rowing remain our flagship sports and continue to attract significant sponsorship. Year on year, we receive incredible support from our lead rugby sponsor, Archibalds, including a sponsored vehicle for the Director of Sport. The generosity does not stop there, with the basketball and drama programmes also benefitting. PAK’nSAVE once again showed exceptional generosity by supporting the rowing programme – gifting and landscaping a boat shed at Twizel, one of three donated, alongside Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and the University of Otago. The College shed provides secure, year-round storage for our boats and plays a vital role in supporting the rowing programme. Additional investment in state-of- the-art technology and resources from PAK’nSAVE has also been instrumental in strengthening the programme and helping position College among the top echelon of competitive rowing schools. I must also acknowledge the important relationship with Avon City Ford, which annually provides our rowing programme with two Ford trucks to utilise for trips to and from Twizel throughout the season. In 2025, sponsors provided significant support to tennis, cricket, rowing, basketball, football, rugby, hockey, and clay target shooting – enabling a number of outstanding sporting achievements – as well as the drama programme. Christ’s College continues to expand the public profile of our sponsors as valued business partners. Sponsors are invited to participate in College’s Business Banter speaker series, attend a range of College social functions, and share their brands through our growing social media platforms. Sponsorships create meaningful connections within our community while delivering tangible benefits for our boys and strengthening the relationships that support our programmes.
We are deeply grateful for this outstanding level of support.

Christ’s College Canterbury
A legacy that lasts Laura Forbes Future Gifts Manager One of the special parts of my role at Christ’s College is seeing how strong the connection to this school remains long after boys leave at the end of Year 13.
For many Old Boys and families, College is much more than a school. It is where friendships began, confidence grew, and important life lessons were learnt. For many, that connection becomes even more meaningful over time. I often speak with members of our community who feel deeply grateful for what College gave them. That gratitude sometimes leads to a simple question – how can I give something back? For some, the answer is a gift in their Will. After taking care of your loved ones first, a bequest allows you to support College in a way you have always wanted. It celebrates your relationship with the school and helps ensure it remains strong for future generations. Bequests make a real difference. They help the Board and leadership team plan with confidence and ensure boys in the years ahead benefit from the same opportunities that meant so much to those who came before them. Michael Ormsby, an Old Boy from Hawke’s Bay, has chosen to leave a generous gift to Christ’s College through his estate. His bequest will support the future of the school and ensure the continuation of the Ormsby Memorial Medal, awarded each year to the Head Prefect. The medal honours his grandfather, Charles Montague Ormsby – known as Monty – who attended College from 1888 to 1896. Monty was remembered as both a capable student and someone who looked out for others. Michael shared that his grandfather was “always trying to protect the little guys”. When Monty died at just 31 in a farm accident, Old Boys from South Canterbury donated £50 in his honour so his legacy could continue at the school. That story has always stayed with Michael. “I am compelled to leave a bequest on behalf of my grandfather,” he wrote. “That is why I am making this bequest – to honour his deeds.” The Ormsby family connection to Christ’s College now spans four generations, and through Michael’s bequest that connection will continue well into the future. If you have ever thought about leaving a bequest to College, I would be very happy to have a confidential conversation with you. There is no obligation — just an opportunity to talk through what might feel right for you.
Your connection to Christ’s College does not end when you leave the school gates. A legacy gift is one way it can continue.

Transformative gifts Shelley Keach Senior Development Manager I sat down with three generous members of the Christ’s College community to talk about why they choose to give. Each story was different, but a common thread quickly emerged – a belief in the transformative power of opportunity and the role generosity plays in creating it.
Christ’s College has always been shaped by generosity. Long before today’s boys walked through the gates, individuals who believed deeply in the value of education chose to invest in its future. Their foresight ensured the school could grow, evolve, and remain accessible to talented young men who might otherwise never have had the chance to attend. The impact of that generosity continues to ripple through our College community today. For Old Boy and current Christ’s College Chair Jeremy Johnson, philanthropy was not an abstract idea – it was the reason he was able to come to College. “My time at College was transformative – opening up a whole world of interest and opportunities that I eagerly grabbed,” he says. “I was mindful at the time – and remain very mindful – that without the Somes Scholarship I was given then, I would not have been able to attend.” Receiving that scholarship shaped his view of giving.

Christ’s College Canterbury
Fees may sustain the school, but philanthropy
builds its future. – Oliver Hickman, Old Boy
travelled from Malaysia to study at the University of Canterbury in the 1950s on a scholarship – an opportunity that helped shape his future. “None of that would have happened without the scholarship,” they say. At Christ’s College, they see that same potential unfolding through the boys who receive scholarships today. “We have seen firsthand the results – the opportunities taken, the service given, and the love for the staff, the school, and the beautiful aroha that exists in the school grounds and beyond.” For Old Boy Oliver Hickman, giving is also about recognising the privilege of the education he has received and helping ensure others benefit in the same way. “I consider it a great privilege to have attended College, and that opportunity was only possible because of those who chose to give back,” he says. His hope is that philanthropy will continue to strengthen College for generations to come. “Fees may sustain the school,” he says, “but philanthropy builds its future.” It is a sentiment Jeremy shares. “The history, culture, and campus are irreplaceable,” he says. “However, it will only flourish when College’s community stands behind it. If we want to preserve our special school, we need to support it.” The future of Christ’s College will always depend on people who recognise the difference their generosity can make. Every gift – whether for scholarships, facilities or the wider life of the school – adds to a legacy built over generations. It helps ensure that boys who have the ability and determination to thrive at College have the opportunity to do so.
Today, his philanthropy focuses largely on scholarships, continuing one of the founding purposes of the school – ensuring that talented boys can attend, regardless of financial circumstances. “College exists to educate boys to be young men of virtuous character and to achieve their potential in life,” Jeremy says. “When I give to College, I give to help it achieve those outcomes.” That belief in the transformative power of education resonates strongly with past College parents Wendy and Andrew Oh. When reflecting on their own approach to giving, they were struck by the origin of the word philanthropy itself. “Historically, philanthropy stems from the Ancient Greek, philanthropia, meaning ‘love of humankind’,” they say. “This is precisely what philanthropy means to us.” Their family has experienced firsthand the life-changing power of educational opportunity.
