Champlain Township council approved the new speed limit restriction during its May 14 session. – Gregg Chamberlain PARKS AND TRAILS RE-OPEN FOR SEASON Nearly all of the South Nation Conserva- tion’s (SNC) parks, trails, docks and boat launches have been re-opened. SNC’s network of 14 day-use Conservation Areas across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario are accessible free of charge, and provide public access to the Conservation Authority’s 12,000 acres of community land. These well-maintained properties offer endless, close-to-home recreational opportunities in natural areas. Jessup’s Falls Conservation Area in Plantagenet and Robert Graham Conservation Area in Glen Stewart will remain temporarily closed. – Francis Racine

Un incendie a ravagé l’entreprise Kal Tire à Hawkesbury, au cours de la soirée, le jeudi 16 mai. L’incendie s’est déclaré vers 17 h, chez le détaillant Kal Tire, à l’intersection des routes 17 et 34 à Hawkesbury. L’épaisse fumée noire qui s’échappait du sinistre pouvait être aperçue à des dizaines de kilomètres à la ronde. Les pompiers des stations 1 et 2 du can- ton de Champlain ont d’abord été appelés sur la scène du sinistre. A major fire took place at Kal Tire in Hawkesbury last night, May 16. The fire broke out at approximately 5 p.m. at Kal Tire, at the intersection of Highways 17 and 34. The fire was under control at around 8:30 p.m. A total of 55 firefighters from Champlain, Hawkesbury, East Hawkesbury, The Nation and Alfred- Plantagenet were at work on the scene. Du 6 mai au 7 juin, le département du Service de l’Environnement de la Ville de Hawkesbury procédera au rinçage unidirectionnel du réseau d›aqueduc. Cette opération sera effectuée du lundi au vendredi, entre 7 h et 15 h 30. Le rinçage unidirectionnel vise à déloger les dépôts dans les conduites et afin de préserver une eau de haute qualité. Pour ce faire, l›eau doit être forcée dans une seule direction et, par la suite, être évacuée par les bornes-fontaines. Au cours de cette opération, il peut y avoir une baisse temporaire de pression et/ou une coloration rougeâtre de l›eau. Avant tout usage, il est recommandé de vérifier si elle est colorée. Si l’eau est colorée, il est important d’ouvrir les robinets d›eau froide jusqu›à ce que l›eau retrouve sa couleur habituelle. Cependant, la décoloration de l’eau ne pose aucun danger à la santé. Les béné- fices sont vraiment pour les salariés et non pour les élus. » A la suite de la réunion du 13 mai, le conseil municipal a chargé l’administration municipale de compiler des études compa- ratives provenant d’autres municipalités de
la région. « Ils veulent que nous enquêtions pour connaitre les salaires des maires, ce qui est juste et pour voir les profits, a déclaré Daniel Gatien, directeur général de la Ville. Un tableau contenant des compa- raisons avec d’autres municipalités sera fourni. » Bien que M. Gatien ne pense pas que cette information soit prête pour la pro- chaine réunion du conseil, qui aura lieu le 27 mai prochain, Mme Assaly veut au moins qu’un règlement municipal soit adopté pour reconnaitre ce qui « ne va pas avec la règlementation en ce moment. » La mairesse a aussi expliqué qu’elle a fait ses propres recherches sur les salaires EFTNBJSFTÆUSBWFSTMFQBZT&MMFEFNBOEF aux membres du conseil de faire la même chose pour les salaires des conseillers. « On va commencer avec la rémunération du maire et par la suite on va entreprendre la question des rémunérations des conseil- lers, a-t-elle indiqué. Beaucoup de choses, comme les bénéfices et le plan de pension, c’est totalement ridicule et ça coute de l’argent à la Ville. Il faut qu’on adopte un règlement qui est équitable envers les élus et envers la Ville de Hawkesbury. » Lors de la dernière réunion du conseil, une augmentation de salaire de 53 % a été proposée pour la mairesse. Le conseil n’a pas encore pris de décision. Le salaire annuel de Mme Assaly est actuellement de 36 329 $ et l’augmentation proposée fixerait son salaire à 55 583 $. &MMFBSBQQFMÊBVDPOTFJMRVFMMFOBQBT eu d’adjointe administrative depuis son entrée en fonction, contrairement à ses prédécesseurs. « C’est plus avantageux pour la Ville, parce qu’il y a un poste qui est complètement aboli, ce qui représente une économie de près de 50 000 $, et je fais le travail des deux postes. » Mme Assaly a également souligné son niveau de scolarité, citant son baccalauréat en droit et sa maîtrise en éducation – un fait qui n’a pas été bien accepté par certains. « J’ai dit, tout simplement, que mon édu- cation est un atout à mon travail, a clarifié la mairesse. Ce n’est pas un prérequis. » Cette question sera portée à l’attention du conseil lors des prochaines réunions. &/#3&'r#3*&'4 CHAMPLAIN TOWNSHIP PARKS Champlain Township parks and recreation staff have some spring cleanup work not related to this year’s flood. Le Centre de Créativité de Vankleek Hill présente l’exposition annuelle des artistes de l’atelier Nathalie Frenière, les 25 et 26 mai, de 13 h à 16 h. Les œuvres de quelque 35 artistes y seront exposées. Au cours du vernissage, Didier Chasteau interprétera des airs au piano. Mme Frenière enseigne la peinture depuis 10 ans et est une artiste peintre connue dans la région. Elle expose à l’international et au régional depuis 2006. Depuis quatre ans, elle reçoit ses élèves dans son atelier situé à Vankleek Hill et chaque année, elle organise une exposition pour célébrer les fruits des créations de ses étudiants avec la communauté.
